Wicked Little Letters (2023)
Disappointed
The film falls between comedy and drama and fails at both. Some funny bits too far apart along with some dramatic moments, again far apart. Many excellent performances are unable to rescue this script which doesn't know what it wants to be.
Similarly, was the complete stupidity and overt mysogyny by most of the male characters intended to be funny or historical comment?
Checking online and there's a lot of historical accuracy. I think they should have tried to make it more accurate as story held up on its own. The set design was also excellent.
Along with many stereotyped supporting characters there was blind colour casting creating a historical contradiction. Yet these characters, for obvious reason, were left alone when it came to stereotyping.
Shooting Dogs (2005)
the awfulness of man and our lovely UN
The film brings home the self created impotence of the international community. Dogs are shot by soldiers to prevent them eating the bodies of people they have to stand by and watch being slaughtered. The true facts (although the characters are fictional) of the situation are as awful as they are bizarre. Portraying this on screen along with the humanity in the face of death was done superbly and in a very direct human way.
The illustration of how situations such as this gather and how people, once considered friends, can be so corrupted is achieved with a deft hand.
