Children of the '90s were a different breed, thriving on all that was scary and traumatizing, from late-night series like Tales from the Crypt to horror books like Goosebumps.
What we survived back then, we now relinquish to new generations thirty years later. Some may say we're twisted parents because we pass our torment on to our children.
But trauma builds character, and Lawd knows today's kids need plenty of that. A small dose of fear and caution never hurt anyone. They can be useful life skills that can keep you out of trouble.
Or survive a horror flick like Goosebumps, which has moved into its second season as a series.
Goosebumps Season 1 aired in 2023, and now, we R. L. Stine fans get to enjoy Season 2, too.

Rob Lieber, the writer of the latest Karate Kid movie that is currently in production, has signed with UTA for representation in all areas.
The writer was previously at Verve. That agency, however, underwent an internal battle amongst partners that went public, leading to the ouster of one of the founding partners. Several literary clients were caught in the brouhaha’s wake, with UTA picking several of them up in the last month or so. The agency previously signed comics author and screenwriter Brian K. Vaughan and Masters of the Air co-creator Jon Orloff.
Lieber made a name for himself in the studio family space, with producer credits in Sony’s hit live-action/CG hybrid Peter Rabbit as well as Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, both released in 2018, and Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, which starred Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner.

March 2024 is a month of movie empires, as "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" lands in theaters just one week ahead of "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." With early box office numbers in, the latest "Ghostbusters" sequel is looking like more of a North Sea Empire than a Roman Empire, with a $16 million opening day and a projected opening weekend total of around $42 million, according to The Wrap. 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" grossed $16.6 million on its opening day and rounded out the weekend with $44 million, so the two movies are performing almost identically.
With a $75 million production budget and a worldwide box office total of $204.3 million, "Afterlife" was considered a modest success, especially given the extenuating circumstances of movie theaters still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire" was given a bigger price tag of $100 million to accommodate a larger ensemble cast, a return to New York City, and substantial visual effects,...

R L Stine’s Goosebumps has been renewed for a second series at Disney+, with a change in format to an anthology show.
R L Stine’s Goosebumps is one of the bestselling book series in history. It is no surprise that it has had myriad screen adaptations over the years.
Perhaps the most fondly remembered is the 1990s television series, which had memorable opening titles in which the shadow of the G in Goosebumps made it’s way through an eerie town while the unsettling theme tune played over it.
Many of the original novels were adapted, and it marked a high point for television horror aimed at young adults, as it was broadcast around the same time as Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, a horror anthology aimed at older teenagers. Several of Stine’s works have made it to the screen, from a trilogy of Fear Street...

American Born Chinese actor Ben Wang needs to start practicing his crane kicks because he’s the star of Sony’s new Karate Kid. Wang’s casting comes after a global search for the right actor. Wang beat thousands of competitors for the role, with 10,000 entries reported in 24 hours. The anticipated film finds Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprising their roles from previous chapters of the Karate Kid franchise.
To say Wang’s audition was impressive would be an understatement. Not only did he display a profound understanding of the character, but he’s also fluent in Mandarin and trained in multiple martial arts forms. His arsenal of skills includes karate, wing chun/kung fu, gumdo, Kempo, and taekwondo training.
Details about the plot remain a mystery, though we hear Sony will move the story to the East Coast and focus on a teen from China who finds identity and strength in martial arts.

One of the most celebrated cinematic interpretations of Stephen King is the two-film adaptation of his seminal horror novel "It." Directed by Andy Muschietti, with the movies released in 2017 and 2019, "It" follows the twisted coming-of-age of a group of childhood friends in Derry, Maine. While the seven kids are harassed by neighborhood bully Henry Bowers (Nicholas Hamilton) and his gang of teenage ne'er-do-wells, a different kind of evil festers under Derry. Primarily appearing in the form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Bill Skarsgård), this otherworldly monster instills fear in its young victims before consuming them entirely.
Though the creature has haunted the region since ancient times, the first chapter takes place in the summer of 1989. That's when Pennywise surfaces to claim new victims around Derry while setting its sights on the main characters. Finding strength and solace in numbers, these friends refer to themselves share a bond under the banner...

From the moment The Haunted Mask hit TV screens one chilly October afternoon in 1995, Goosebumps fans the world over knew that a movie was only a matter of time.
Those were the days of Goosebumps bedding sets, green and purple wrist watches bathed in cobwebs and time spent begging parents for the $8.95 (plus $2 shipping and handling) so that one might join the hallowed, card-carrying ranks of the Official Goosebumps Fan Club. Bookmobiles everywhere overflowed with copies of Night of the Living Dummy II and The Barking Ghost and the silver screen was ripe for the kind of wicked playfulness and fiendish glee that only R.L. Stine could deliver.
But adolescent aficionados of the spooky and the strange never saw their dream of a 90s big screen Goosebumps adventure realized. Monster kids grew into horror loving adults before Slappy and his gang of sinister monstrosities escaped the pages of R.L.

Among fans of all things spooky, Spooky Season -- the extended holiday period leading up to Halloween -- is generally recognized as beginning on July 5, since Halloween is the next major commercial holiday after Independence Day. Disney seems to have embraced this idea with the release of "Haunted Mansion," a family-friendly spookfest based on the Disney parks attraction, directed by Justin Simien ("Bad Hair") and starring Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Unfortunately for the ghosts and ghouls of "Haunted Mansion," the movie had two things working against it: a bloated $150 million budget, and a release date slotted for the weekend after Barbenheimer, the surprise team-up of Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" that has blown the box office away. Earlier this week, projections for "Haunted Mansion" pointed to a $30 million opening weekend, but after the movie grossed just $9.9 million on Friday including Thursday previews,...

‘American Horror Story’ fails to punch above its weight with a deep, raw idea that’s unfortunately stuck in a shallow episode and grave.
“For a minute. For a thousand years. Forever.”
Horror is full of fascinating figures who make enthralling arguments for why the dead are more valuable than the living and the persecution that frequently follows this philosophy. Titles like Re-Animator, Deadgirl, The Autopsy of Jane Done, and so many others uniquely examine life, death, and the blurred lines in between the two. American Horror Stories’ “Necro” attempts to also bring grief and romance into the equation with this failed experiment that falls short in some seriously tone deaf ways, but still manages to scratch the surface of some compelling ideas.

Disney+ has picked up Goosebumps, a live-action series based on R.L. Stine’s bestselling books. The new version, which has been in development since April 2020, hails from Scholastic Entertainment, the media division of Scholastic, Neal H. Moritz, producer of the Goosebumps and Goosebumps 2 films, and Sony Pictures TV. The news, which had been previously announced, was part of Disney Branded Television’s TCA presentation Monday.
Written by Nick Stoller and Rob Letterman, Goosebumps combines teen comedy with horror, action-adventure, mystery and psychological thrill. The series follows a group of five high schoolers who unleash supernatural forces upon their town and must all work together — thanks to and in spite of their friendships, rivalries and pasts with each other — in order to save it, learning much about their own parents’ teenage secrets in the process.
Stoller and Letterman executive produce with Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Conor Welch, Iole Lucchese and Caitlin Friedman.

What would spooky season be without the Sanderson Sisters? Thanks to Freeform, we’ll never have to find out.
The cable network’s annual 31 Nights of Halloween lineup features 14 showings of Hocus Pocus, the beloved 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy — and while that may seem like a lot, keep in mind that Freeform aired the Walt Disney flick a whopping 30 (!) times in 2019. (Of course, you can watch Hocus Pocus as many times as you’d like with a subscription to Disney+, but who are we to suggest a commercial-free viewing experience?)

Monday Update, writethru after Sunday 12:26Pm post: The international box office continues to provide welcome surprises during the pandemic era. Where movie theaters are open and people feel safe, they turn up for new or enduringly exciting product that’s on offer.

Nickelodeon is getting dark.
The kids network released the first teaser for its upcoming revival of the classic ’90s series “Are You Afraid of the Dark,” and the new version looks a fright more more sinister than the original. The teaser, which you can watch above, shows a new batch of kids gathered around a campfire, submitting fresh scary stories for the approval of the Midnight Society.
The trailer features ominous music and more soundbites of screaming than we ever expected to hear on the channel that brought us “Spongebob,” “Zoey 101,” and almost every other beloved kids show. Then it asks the time-worn question anew: “Are you afraid of the dark?”
