How often do you see a film that doesn’t put a foot wrong? I’m talking about Richard Linklater’s Hit Man here, which is, by far, the most exciting film that I’ve seen in recent times. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that there’s not a single dull second in this dark comedy, which is co-produced and co-written by Glenn Powell, who also aces the title role. Even though it seems like the part is tailor-made for a certain Ryan Gosling, Powell makes it his own and hits it out of the park. What further helps is his stunning chemistry with Adria Arjona, who plays Madison. While the story, which is loosely based on the life of fake hitman Gary Johnson, is not particularly hard to follow, Linklater puts a philosophical spin on it, which only enhances the whole thing. The director’s signature style of deftly written,...

One conversation around “Hit Man,” our movie contender to watch this week, is mostly about how it should have gotten a legitimate theatrical release and not been a streamer play for Netflix, where its impact will likely be lessened. It’s supposed to be a star turn for Glen Powell, and the type of charisma-driven indie-ish romantic comedy/thriller that people say they wish there were more of in theaters.
But what about the movie itself? Well, it’s a darkly funny based-on-a-true-story charmer, with Powell playing a mild-mannered man who has a gig posing as a hitman to entrap people in murder-for-hire plots for the police. But things get complicated when he falls in love with a “client” (Adria Arjona) who hires him to off her abusive husband. Powell is a long-shot contender for Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay (with director Richard Linklater), but even if this ends...

June is often a prime moviegoing month for fans of blockbusters, but none of Hollywood’s typical calendar rules seem to apply in 2024. The strike-induced production delays in 2023 have left many studios with abnormally thin summer movie slates this year, meaning that many cinephiles might find themselves relying on streaming more heavily than usual.
Fortunately, Netflix has a particularly robust slate of additions to its movie library this month. Many eyes in the film world are on “Godzilla Minus One,” the 2023 Japanese blockbuster that has previously been unavailable to stream in the United States; and “Hit Man,” Richard Linklater’s Glen Powell-led comedy that earned strong reviews at last year’s Venice Film Festival and has adorned Los Angeles with viral billboards lampooning the city’s many slip-and-fall lawyers. In addition to those new releases, Netflix has also loaded up on studio hits and indie gems of yesteryear, providing something for everyone this month.

“Hit Man” is the kind of movie that 25 years ago could have made $200 million at the box office on a budget of two percent of that. Now, Richard Linklater and Glen Powell’s romantic thriller-comedy is going straight to Netflix after traditional studios balked at giving it a theatrical release.
In an interview with the BBC, Linklater attributes that change to studios being afraid to take even small risks on adult-oriented dramas.
“You don’t get fired for doing a sequel or an origin story, something that already exists,” the Oscar-nominated “Boyhood” director said. “You don’t get in trouble for what’s obvious and commercial. What changed is that films got greenlit by the marketing department and then it’s become really safe choices.”

A raft of new films, from Challengers to Hit Man, have shown the importance and popularity of desire on screen
The success of Hit Man, Richard Linklater’s new comedy that has garnered glowing reviews heralding Glen Powell’s emergence as a true movie star, largely boils down to one factor: illicit attraction. It’s the kind that powers fantasies and a good portion of human behavior, whether we’d like to admit it or not.
There’s the pull of Powell’s Gary, a nerdy thirtysomething psychology professor in New Orleans, moonlighting as an undercover impersonator of hired killers, trying on different, more confident identities for size. There’s the longstanding, vicarious thrill of watching ethically dubious protagonists flitter through a well-oiled crime caper. And most especially, there’s the heat between Gary, in disguise as a suave hitman, and Adria Arjona’s Madison, a potential client with whom...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker on Wbgr-fm on June 6th, reviewing “Hit Man,” featuring Glen Powell (also co-writer) and directed by Richard Linklater (“School of Rock”). Streaming on Netflix beginning June 7th.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Gary Johnson (Powell) is a professor of philosophy at the University of New Orleans. While helping the police on the side in investigation techniques, he is asked to go undercover as a hit man, mostly to coerce folks into getting busted for trying to hire him. When Madison (Adria Arjona) solicits his services, his attraction to her throws him off the undercover gig, and his subsequent relationship with her complicates matters further. When fellow cop Jasper (Austin Amelio) starts to suspect something, Gary’s cover is about to be compromised.
“Hit Man” is streaming on Netflix beginning June 7th. Featuring Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Retta, Austin Amelio and Evan Holtzman.

Once you lose your wife to Glen Powell, it’s kind of hopeless to even think about winning her back. In Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, Madison’s husband Ray Masters gets murdered to set up the climax of the movie. Even though we don’t get to see the murder taking place, his death is not much of a mystery to solve. Madison admits to Gary that she killed him, and it’s only then she gets to know the true identity of her new lover. What we’re discussing in this article are the circumstances that led to Ray getting killed and the aftermath of it.

Years before Hannah Arendt coined the phrase ‘the banality of evil’, classic crime films depicted the hit man as an abstract symbol of evil, much like Nazis in political movies. This Gun for Hire (1942) and Murder by Contract (1958) featured such characters, becoming iconic representations within film noir. A prime virtue of Richard Linklater’s new film, Hit Man, is that it takes a fascinating approach by featuring no traditional hit man at all. Instead, it’s centered on a character who adopts an array of personas, including that of a hit man. Linklater delves deep into illusions and imaginations around...

“Hit Man” is writer/director Richard Linklater’s most commercial film since “School of Rock.” While the indie icon has enjoyed some mild box office successes in his 30-year-plus career, those have largely been the product of overwhelmingly positive critical reception and the longtail word-of-mouth that accompanies a beloved gem like “Boyhood.”
But that’s not “Hit Man.” Linklater combines the fun of a screwball comedy, the twists and turns of a crime film, and a sexy romance featuring the magnetic charm of Glen Powell in a role that announces him as a full-blown movie star after having carried (along with co-star Sidney Sweeney) the surprise rom-com hit “Anyone But You” this winter, and ahead of anchoring the studio tentpole “Twisters” this summer.

This whole month is dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community (and there’s really no reason not to do that the whole year through), as cities around the world are gearing up for their Pride festivities. This weekend includes events in Los Angeles and Washington, among others, so why not join in on the party?
June may revel in being out and proud, but you can honor the concept of being out without actually going out. Just stay right at home and catch a Pride Month–worthy stream. Call up a documentary about an inspiring trans athlete, a series with a huge cast of characters across a wide spectrum of sexuality, or a string of films about love. What’s not to love about that?

The words “true story” are always a curious thing to see at the beginning of a film. Sometimes the term is applied to sober-eyed dramas that seek to convince you they’re nearly documentaries. Think of your Spotlights and All the President’s Mens. More often than not though, the phrase is used as a marketing gimmick for stories where the word “truth” is an abstraction. Think Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Which is what makes another Texan director’s latest indie effort, the beguiling Hit Man now on Netflix, so amusingly slippery. Richard Linklater and Glen Powell’s comedy is indeed based on a “true story,” as they promise at the start. I feel that understanding human beings is one of the most underrated art forms. Well, suppose I walk into an interview and tell someone that I understand people. They are just going to look at me and throw me out of the window. And I am not even talking about statistics to understand what a group of people like American Presidents do. I am talking about individuals: their actions, their choice of words, their gestures. Well, you can read even this in Travis Bickle’s voice or Patrick Bateman’s, because that’s how most psychopathic hitmen or serial killers define their prey. I feel we all have a “Ron” inside of us, and we all want to be a cooler version of ourselves, yet most of us, including Hit Man‘s Gary Johnson, have better control over that “alter ego.”

Whenever you think about a hitman, there is a very specific image that is created in your mind, and we saw that Gary was the complete opposite of it. He was working for the Da’s office, but he was a very shy and timid guy. If one saw Gary teaching in his philosophy class, they would say that he couldn’t even lift a finger, and that’s why nobody could imagine that he could be convincing as a hitman. Gary’s colleagues, especially Jasper, believed that the man didn’t have it in him, as he didn’t seem ruthless, he didn’t have a confident demeanor, and most of all, he lacked the conviction that was the basic requirement for the job. But what Jasper didn’t know was that Gary was an exceptional actor, and he could blend in the role so well that nobody could...

Hit Man, directed by Richard Linklater, is inspired by an article written by Skip Hollandsworth, in which he documents the fascinating life of an undercover agent named Gary Johnson. The plan of the Houston County District Attorney was quite simple: they couldn’t arrest people just for thinking about committing a crime, so they made sure that they acted on it. While pretending to be a professional hitman Gary met these potential criminals, and more than often, these people told him bluntly what they wanted. The moment a person gave money, it became easy for the prosecution to prove in court that there was actus rea on their part. Though the film is inspired by true events, there were things that were dramatized, and the makers took creative liberties. The character of Madison “Maddy” Masters, who came to Johnson to get rid of her husband, can be said to be...

The glitz and charm of Richard Linklater’s Hit Man might distract you from something about Gary Johnson, Glen Powell’s character with a chameleon-like repertoire of personalities. There’s an odd darkness to this fascinating guy. And that might be the only attribute of the man we get to know in Hit Man that is not quite true of the real Gary Johnson. That’s right. Powell’s character in the film he co-wrote with Linklater is created in the mold of a very real professor-turned-hitman, Gary Johnson. The Gary in Hit Man shuffles personalities like a deck of cards and always knows which one to pick for the client he’s about to trick into conviction. It all works out fine between his life as a professor and an undercover mole for law enforcement until Gary falls in love with one of his clients. In case you want...

Something so loud was a little unexpected from Richard Linklater, the auteur justifiably celebrated for his more serene discourse on some of the most existential questions of life. With Glen Powell donning a never-seen-before personality (or more than one) in Hit Man, Richard Linklater found the perfect vessel for what he was aiming for—an explosive mix of succulent bites of thrill and contemplative monologues that are a refreshing shift from the haughty philosophical discourse crowding indies.

Yes, there’s a real guy and a fake contract killer behind Glen Powell’s professor-turned-mole, Gary Johnson. But Hit Man doesn’t get too hung up on exposition. So just getting to know Powell’s Gary well enough should tell you who he is, who he wants to be, and who he ends up becoming by the end of the film. Gary might be a...

The summer movie kickoff has been a little bumpy, but the staff at IMDb have their sights set on several highly anticipated movies and shows coming out in June.
See IMDb’s June Picks
If you need something light and fun for the weekend, check out Glen Powell and Adria Arjona in ‘Hit Man’ on Netflix. Based on the true story of part-time undercover investigator Gary Johnson, director Richard Linklater's crime comedy finds Powell moonlighting as a fake hit man who starts to fall for a woman who enlists his services.
Those looking for thrills and chills can head to the theater, where Will Smith and Martin Lawrence go undercover in ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die,’ and Dakota Fanning finds herself trapped with a bunch of strangers under spooky circumstances in the directorial debut of M. Night Shyamalan's daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan.
The rest of June will keep many fans busy with new episodes of three Emmy-winning series: Season 4 of “The Boys” (6/13) on Prime Video, Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” (6/16) on Max, and Season 3 of “The Bear” (6/27) on Hulu.
There’s not a ton on the menu for families, but ‘Inside Out 2’ is expected to be one of 2024’s box office bright spots. The Pixar sequel brings back Riley’s original emotions and adds Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety and Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear’) as Ennui.

The femme fatale is a figure that dates back centuries. In Greek mythology there were The Sirens, whose song dragged sailors to the depths of the seas, as well as Clytemnestra — wife, seductress, and ultimately murderer of King Agamemnon. Even Eve can be considered one for luring Adam into eating the forbidden fruit. But it was motion pictures that elevated the archetype to common nomenclature, starting at the form’s inception with characters played by actresses like Greta Garbo and Louise Brooks, then flourishing in the ‘40s and ‘50s with the popularity of pulp crime narratives.
Bombshells like Rita Hayworth and Barbara Stanwyck came to define the femme fatale, with directors like Charles Vidor and Billy Wilder wielding their strength against the hapless men who populate their films. You know the story: Boy meets girl, boy advises girl not to kill her abusive husband, boy meets girl again, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back by killing a corrupt police officer. Get some new ideas, Hollywood!
Richard Linklater’s Hit Man puts a fresh spin on that classic tale. Co-writer and producer Glen Powell also stars as Gary Johnson, a solitary, mild-mannered college psychology professor who moonlights as a fake hit man in sting operations for the New Orleans Police Department. He soon racks up an impressive amount of arrests — before Madison (Adria Arjona) walks through the door, asks him to kill her husband, and turns his world upside down.
In a crucial conversation just before Gary meets Madison, his ex-wife, Alicia (Molly Bernard), notes that she doesn’t think Gary was ever passionate enough in their marriage to kill. “You’re saying it like it’s a bad thing,...

Plot: A mild-mannered psychology professor (Glen Powell) interested in electronics takes a sideline bugging undercover cops in sting operations, specializing in setting up phony hits. When the usual undercover guy is suspended, he’s enlisted to pose as a hitman. He turns out to be a natural at undercover work, with the police using him to entrap people taking out contracts. Things get complicated when he falls for an abused wife (Adria Arjona) wanting to take out her husband.
Review: Richard Linklater’s Hit Man is the movie where Glen Powell finally becomes a legit star. Granted, there was little to no doubt remaining in anyone’s head after his breakout turn in Top Gun: Maverick, but in Hit Man, his charisma is so white hot and old-school in that true movie star way that he should rocket to the top of everyone’s young leading man list. Linklater previously...

Richard Linklater’s new film, Hit Man, showcases a refreshing spin on the archetypal hitman narrative. Instead of following a conventional killer, the story centers on Gary Johnson (played by Glen Powell), a philosophy professor who moonlights as an undercover hitman for the police. This intriguing character blend sets up a narrative rich in psychological complexities and relationship dynamics. Crafting Intricate Characters Adria Arjona, who plays Madison Masters, shared how she connected instantly with Powell on set. She remarked, I’ve had such an incredible time working with Glen; we really clicked from the beginning. It’s a joy to be on set...

As the Internet is now learning, Glen Powell had a tiny role in 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ playing a trader at the Gotham Stock exchange who ends up a victim of Bane’s (Tom Hardy) wrath. What fans of the film might not know is that Hardy actually slammed Powell’s head into the keyboard on the final take.
Speaking with IMDb, Powell recalled how things went sideways. “He’s supposed to give me a little bit of a tap on the back of the head. So, we did it a few times. We all nail it. It was great. And then this last time … he just slammed my head on the keyboard. And I remember just, like, getting kind of dazed.”
But Powell chalked it up to both actors being immersed in their roles. “I think we all just got kind of caught up in it,” he said.
According to Powell, cinematographer Wally Pfister then joked that he forgot to roll camera, prompting director Christopher Nolan to ask, “You think you can do it again just like that?”
Powell’s response? “Absolutely!”
Nolan then let him off the hook, admitting, “We’re kidding. Go see a medic.”
To celebrate the premiere of Netfix’s ‘Hit Man,’ Powell sat down with IMDb to throw the Ultimate Watch Party by choosing snacks and essentials for screening the film at home.

In addition to his Bane encounter, he talked how he and Sydney Sweeney brought realism to their romantic comedy ‘Anyone But You,’ and shared what it’s like collaborating with frequent collaborator director Richard Linklater.

There’s always the risk of misusing 15 tightly mandated minutes on a director’s junket day. One imagines it increases twofold when the subject’s been of interest nearly your entire film-watching life, with whom you’d sooner exchange questions about a 2019 short produced for the Pompidou Centre than, say, what it’s like working with Glen Powell.
It was under these circumstances I had the fortune to interview Richard Linklater, who’s been on a major press jag for Hit Man, his biggest crowdpleaser in several years that arrives on Netflix this Friday, June 7. In a tight frame we managed to cover the strange connections it bears with his other recent premiere, and––an issue about which he clearly feels passionate––why the culture is asking us to remain 13 years old forever.

After years of working hard in Hollywood, Glen Powell has entered his movie star era, culminating with Hit Man, streaming June 7 on Netflix. But some things never change, no matter how big he gets. For one, he still brings his parents everywhere. They visit his sets, troll him at movie premieres, and even cameo in his movies.
It’s a tradition that dates back to Powell’s earliest roles; when he was still a teenager, his mom drove him from their Austin home to Shreveport, Louisiana, to audition for Denzel Washington’s The Great Debaters, and his parents joined him on set as extras when he did his scene for Washington. Neither Glen Sr. nor Cyndy Powell had experience in Hollywood: He’s an executive coach and she’s a former staff member of the Reagan White House. But when their son appeared on set, both could tell he had something special.

Richard Linklater is opening up about the hurdles to producing his latest movie, “Hit Man,” saying that studios initially “really didn’t want to make the film.”
In a new interview with the BBC, the celebrated director of “Dazed and Confused” and the “Before” trilogy said that he and Glen Powell — who stars in the film and co-wrote the script — worked on the film “very independently.”
“Glen and I wrote it speculatively and we didn’t get paid anything, we just tried to get the film made,” he told the BBC. “We really felt we were onto something, we felt we had written a film noir, a crime film that’s also a screwball comedy about a couple that you’re rooting to be together, but I think they wanted it to be just one thing.”

Richard Linklater has lamented the lack of adult stories in Hollywood films. The 63-year-old director has helmed the romantic comedy thriller 'Hit Man' and is frustrated that cinema prioritises plots that are aimed at children and teenagers.Richard told the BBC: "I think what's out of fashion, people say there's no sex in movies anymore, but there isn't 'adult' in movies anymore, as sexuality in movies equals adult."When I was 13 years old and looking at movies, I thought the adult world looked pretty interesting, it looked fun and I thought, 'I can't wait to get there!' But it wasn't just the sex, it was the adult situations they showed."But somewhere along the way Hollywood inverted that. It's like they said, 'We're going to make films where you can stay 13 forever, you stay that little kid with little kid concerns', so I guess it drifted...

“When did our professor get hot?” This is a query posed by one enterprising student in a psychology 101 seminar to another. In that exact moment, they’re watching their part-time instructor, a previously nebbish Glen Powell, begin acting like… well, how you might expect Glen Powell to act if you’ve seen Top Gun: Maverick and Everybody Wants Some!! (although in those flicks he never was so cocksure while explaining the societal virtues in summary execution).

The many nuances of adulthood aren’t on display in movies anymore, “Hit Man” director Richard Linklater told the BBC on Thursday. “Traditional” studios turned the movie, which debuted on Netflix in May, in part because “there isn’t ‘adult’ in movies anymore,” he added.
When he and the movie’s co-director, co-writer, and star Glen Powell got together to discuss the project, Linklater told told him “it’s gonna have sex, it’ll be passionate, it’ll be carnal, the desire that drives everything.”
“Glen’s character starts off very dispassionate, but by the end of the movie he’s a different guy, he’s discovered passion, and the movie has this strong chemistry and sexuality,” Linklater told the outlet. “I think what’s out of fashion, people say there’s no sex in movies anymore, but there isn’t ‘adult’ in movies anymore, as sexuality in movies equals adult.

Adria Arjona’s first appearance in Hit Man is a classic femme fatale entrance: A mysterious woman walks through the door of a café and recruits our hero Gary (Glen Powell) to do a dirty job for her. Of course, in this case, things are a little more complicated. The job is a murder, but the hero isn’t a killer; he’s a psychology professor running undercover sting operations for the New Orleans Police Department. And he’s going to try to convince her to change her mind.
Look a little closer at Arjona’s Madison, however, and you’ll see that there’s more than initially meets the eye. “What we were asking Adria to do is just be a real person,” director Richard Linklater told Netflix. “She isn’t the Black Widow. She’s just really complex like all of us. We meet her at her darkest moment.

Cinetic Media has launched a new unit that will oversee the re-licensing of many of the iconic titles that drove the independent film revolution of the 1980s and the 1990s. The move comes as the distribution landscape in Hollywood is being reshaped. Dubbed Cinetic Library Services, the division will identify innovative ways to reach new audiences and disseminate titles across subscription streamers, transactional VOD, direct-to-consumer and theatrical re-releases. The division will be overseen by Isadora Johnson and Leah Harris, two longtime Cinetic executives.

Netflix doesn’t license out its series and films to others, and now it is pumping the brakes on just how many films its licenses from others.
In the second half of 2023 (July 1-December 31), Netflix had 7,700 acquired films in its library, according to a MoffettNathanson dissection of the streamer’s latest data dump. Sounds like a lot, right? It is, until you consider that the tally is 20 percent lower than what the service had in the first six months of the year.
A quick note: “acquired” in this case refers to content licensed to Netflix, like its current number 1 film on the platform, “Godzilla Minus One” (pictured above), not movies it buys outright (like “Hit Man” from the Venice Film Festival) or produces for itself (like “Maestro”).
Before you accuse Netflix of being anti-movie, the platform also saw a double-digit decline (-10 percent) in its number of acquired series to...

"We never wanted that character to fall into a trope." Netflix has revealed a fun making of featurette for Richard Linklater's beloved Hit Man movie – the incredible new "hitman" comedy set in Texas. It also went on to play at TIFF, NYFF, London and Sundance. From the Oscar-nominated writer / director Richard Linklater, starring the great Glen Powell alongside Adria Arjona, comes Hit Man. Inspired by an unbelievable true story, a "hit man" meets his match with a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities. Co-written by Linklater & Powell and inspired by a true story, it's a cleverly existential comedy about identity. It also stars Austin Amelio, Retta,...
