Sometimes, dead is better.
If you buy Wayforward’s horror action/puzzle game Lit on Steam right now, you’ll get a 2D game about using light sources to find your way through a series of darkened rooms, with an art style that makes it look like a lost episode of “Danny Phantom.” It’s alright for what it is.
That’s not the original Lit, though. The first Lit is a “dead” game from 2009, which went down with the ship when Nintendo closed the WiiWare shop in 2019, and which was one of the best-kept secrets on the Wii. The currently-available version of Lit is a 2015 “reimagining” for iOS/Android that comes off like a Saturday-morning cartoon version of the 2009 game.
It’s a weird situation for a dead game. Lit has been reincarnated, so to speak, but as an arguably worse version of itself.

Veteran animation producer John Williams (“Shrek”) is partnering with Riverstone Pictures on a slate of animated films to be budgeted in the $15 million to $20 million range, the company announced Wednesday in Cannes. The first two projects have already been greenlit.
The slate will be co-produced by Riverstone co-founder Deepak Nayar’s Kintop Pictures and Williams’ Vanguard Entertainment. The first two projects under the new partnership will be “Goose Chase” and “The Silk Road Rally,” both directed by “Charming” helmer Ross Venokur. Venokur also handled Vanguard’s 2015 title “Get Squirrely.”
Williams produced DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek,” which received the first Oscar awarded for animated film as its own category in 2001. He went on to produce sequel “Shrek 2,” and executive produce later sequels “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After,” as well as co-executive-producing spinoff “Puss in Boots” for DreamWorks.

MaryAnn’s quick take… This rushed sequel is an insult to its progenitor movie. A cheap knockoff that doesn’t understand what made Bad Moms so smart, funny, and feminist-wise. I’m “biast” (pro): love the first movie
I’m “biast” (con): the trailer looked awful
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a sequel throw its progenitor movie under a bus the way that A Bad Moms Christmas does. If I hadn’t just rewatched Bad Moms, I would have been doubting what I remembered as a very positive reaction to it last year as I sat through this barrage of nasty, cruel, antiwoman, even antimom garbage. But no: as I had just reminded myself, Bad Moms truly is a terrifically smart and wise movie — and also a very funny one — about the impossible job that modern...

Summer movie season is a magic time of year when Hollywood traditionally rolls out its most appealing merchandise. It’s true that some summer movie seasons are better than others. This is our ranking of all the summer movie seasons since 1980 from worst to best.
On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). The fact that the film had a meager $8 million budget meant that it was a huge cash cow for the studio and rocketed Spielberg to the the forefront of a new generation of filmmakers for a new era of movie mass-consumption. George Lucas and Spielberg followed up in 1977 with Star Wars, which became a sensational and very profitable hit. It helped to convince production...

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

With a long list of accomplishments from television, movies and the stage, it’s increasingly important for Kristin Chenoweth to stay in top form.

Kristin confesses, “I was pretty late to the party in realizing that you can’t put garbage in your body and expect it to run like a Ferrari. When I hit 40, it really became more about how I feel than how I look. When I’m 60, I want to feel 50. I want to be able to enjoy life.”
Ms. Chenoweth also notes that running is her favorite way to stay active. “It keeps my heart healthy! A lot of people find inspiration through running and I’m definitely among them . . . If I have a concert coming up, I love to put...

You may recall that when we reviewed The Croods in our podcast, we were somewhat lukewarm about it. Looking back, it seems that was largely a result of the hope and expectations it managed to bring in the first 30 minutes, that never seemed to completely come together.
Strictly as a family effort though, this one has a lot going for it, including massive appeal to the actual target audience.
The hit film about a family of cavemen, which rather awesomely gives over the reigns of bravery to daughter Eep (Emma Stone), has as its best feature a complexity that rewards repeated viewings. Anything but a simple, wild romp with bizarre creatures, dangers, and the requisite amount of slapstick, The Croods is a layered conversation about growing up, parenthood, and family in general that is easily superimposed over any family… ever.

Sanders (with Dean DeBlois) directed Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon while DeMicco helmed the animated adventure Space Chimps . In the below interview, the pair talk...

Mark your calendars, The Croods Blu-Ray is set to hit on October 1st, and if you thought there wouldn’t be snazzy marketing promos, you thought wrong. How about a nice plush with your film?
Somewhat less than we were hoping for back when we did our podcast review, The Croods is nevertheless a solid bit of family fare that has a lot going for it from the kid perspective.
It doesn’t look overloaded with bonuses, but at least it has a lot more kid-friendly ideas at work than most of the recent animated films.

Directors Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco Give Dallas, TX Press and Children Sneak Peek of The Croods
DreamWorks and 20th Century Fox chose a unique way to promote their newest animated family film. The studios sent directors Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco out on a tour of several different target markets to host question and answer sessions with reporters and their children about the making of "The Croods." The interactive sessions lasted about 35 minutes and utilized scenes from the film to keep even the youngest attendee interested.
"The Croods" tells the tale of the first family of humans. The group finds themselves forced into a brave new world after their cave home is destroyed. They run into many dangers and exotic creatures in their journeys. Can they re-locate and find their place in this new domain or will they just go extinct?

The Croods is the latest feature from DreamWorks Animation. But what does the future hold for the studio? Mark takes a look...
Arch your left eyebrow, for a moment. Good. Now, tilt your head to the side. I'll leave the smile up to you, but you must either smirk or give a big cheesy grin. You're now on your way to looking a lot like the DreamWorks Face, the expression that used to appear in pretty much every DreamWorks Animation film, usually on a talking animal of some description.
The thing is, in the past, all of DreamWorks' movies were comedies. It's since the studio has branched out into other genres, while retaining their sense of humour, that we've started sitting up and taking notice again.
For a while there, it looked like DreamWorks Animation had turned into the very corporate machine that it set out to lampoon: Disney.

Chicago – The fast, funny and brightly thematic “The Croods” is the latest animated epic to come out of DreamWorks Studios, and a couple of veterans in the cartoon game, Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders, are both the writers and directors of this vivid look into a prehistoric cave family and their evolutionary adventures.
“The Croods” are voiced by Nicolas Cage (Grug), Emma Stone (Eep), Catherine Keener (Ugga), Ryan Reynolds (Guy) and Cloris Leachman (Gran). They live to survive, but mostly hide in their dark cave from the outside elements. It is Eep who wants more out of life, and finds it with the adventurous Guy, who exists to enlighten himself.

An issue I immediately faced with The Croods involved Nicolas Cage as the voice of Grug, the hulking caveman father of the family Crood. Not because Cage is some kind of terrible voice actor (he's not), but because he's a string bean of a human and his voice is so recognizable, to hear it coming out of this character felt wrong and off-putting. I dealt with this for the majority of the film's first third as directors Kirk De Micco and Chris Sanders introduce us not only to the rest of the family, but the Paleolithic world they inhabit. The Croods believe themselves to be the last of the cavemen on Earth, creating a sense of urgency and fear of the unknown. To protect his family from the dangers outside, Grug forces them to pile into their cave at any hint of danger. For his wife (voiced by Catherine Keener...

We suspect our reaction may be out of step with the general consensus of press at our Berlin Film Festival screening of the "The Croods" (where we first saw the film back in February) if the guffaws and applause were anything to go by, but really that had us kind of baffled. The DreamWorks film, from writer/directors Chris Sanders ("How to Train Your Dragon," "Lilo & Stitch") and Kirk Di Micco ("Space Chimps"), features a starry voice cast in Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Cloris Leachman and Clark Duke, and an appropriately high concept: the Croods are a family of cavemen who have to evolve suddenly when faced with cataclysmic natural disasters and the arrival of a young Homo Sapiens with the ability to make fire. But while the premise, with its roots in ancient human history, is quite promising, it doesn't appear to have been fertile...

I’m desperately trying to figure out the backstory of the Croods. Not the movie The Croods, because it’s patently obvious that lush, gorgeous animation plus simplistic story sledgehammered home with embarrassingly on-the-nose dialogue that elucidates impossible-to-refute themes -- “be yourself”; “family is important” -- that will also dub equally easily into Mandarin and Russian and Spanish equals global box office jackpot. Or that at least that was the totality of the thought process behind the flick. And so thereby we solve a small mystery, which had been: What happens when you pair up the writer and director of the dire Space Chimps -- that would be Kirk De Micco -- with Chris Sanders, the writer and director of the glorious How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch? The answer: It all gets dumbed down to the Space Chimps level.

How has Emma Stone blown off steam as her career's skyrocketed over the past few years? By acting crude, of course.
Make that Crood, as in the title of her animated feature, The Croods, a caveman-themed comedy from DreamWorks Animation. The film was co-directed by Chris Sanders (How to Train Your Dragon, Lilo and Stitch) and Kirk De Micco (Space Chimps).
"I'm a cave girl, yeah!" enthuses Stone, tall and skinny in a short, lacy slip dress and black-and-white checkerboard jacket during a recent L.A. interview. "So I got to go nuts, which was great. I like to not reel it in, and when you're a cartoon you can act as crazy as you want. I'd never done a cartoon voice before; it was really fun and exciting."

With Oz The Great and Powerful still running rampant over the box office, three new movies open this weekend, hoping to take advantage of the number of schools on spring break to do better business than other movies released over the past few months. Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone head the voice cast of Dreamworks' latest animated odyssey, following the world's last surviving family of Neanderthals as they venture forth into an untamed and unexplored prehistoric world. Gorgeous visuals, frantic pacing and a consistently funny script help this otherwise generic family adventure tip the balance in its favour.Originally conceived by Aardman Animation as part of their five-picture deal with Dreamworks, The Croods - or Crood Awakening as it was originally titled - was first penned by Monty Python alumnus John Cleese, together with Space Chimps helmer Kirk De Micco. When Aardman and Dreamworks parted company, the latter kept the rights and Lilo & Stitch director Chris Sanders came on board as director, only for him to then put...

With a liberal dose of Looney Tunes' light-hearted humour, a family like The Flinstones as a touch point and a prehistoric world to explore in 3D, The Croods is an animated adventure flick about a clan who is taught by patriarch Grug (Nicolas Cage) to fear everything outside their cave. But luckily, eldest daughter Eep (Emma Stone) does her part as the first rebellious teen, not listening to her dad's stern warning and setting her family off on a wild ride that proves there's a world out there worth seeing.
Directed by Kirk De Micco (Space Chimps) and Chris Sanders (How to Train Your Dragon), the duo has fun with the concept of firsts - imagine a teenage girl who'd never seen shoes before! - and smartly plays on the thorny family dynamics of having Gran (Cloris Leachman), mom Ugga (Catherine Keener), brother Thunk (Clark Duke), wild baby Sandy, Grug...

We’re just a few weeks away from seeing DreamWorks’ The Croods arrive on the big screen, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what the animation house have for us next.
The Croods is the first of two animated blockbusters from them this year – the second is the equally anticipated Turbo – and everything we’ve seen so far suggests it’s going to be a really big hit with audiences in a few weeks’ time.
With its release date fast approaching, the studio have released a great new trailer to give us another look at this prehistoric-set comedy. And since the last trailer we saw was way back in December, a new look at The Croods is definitely more than welcome.
Surviving in a volcanic world is tough enough, but caveman Grug gets a rude awakening when an earthquake forces him to leave behind the only world he knows.

DreamWorks’ The Croods will finally be hitting the big screen later this month, and I can’t wait for it to land.
The prehistoric-set animated movie is the first of two blockbusters the animation house are bringing us this year (the second is Turbo), and we’ve seen plenty to suggest that it’s going to be a lot of fun.
With the film’s release just over two weeks away, the studio have been teasing us with a series of new ‘Prehistoric Fails’ clips. And we’ve got the latest to share with you exclusively – ‘Brawn vs. Brain’ – giving us a look at Nicolas Cage’s Grug voting for strength over intelligence.

Hitting the big screen at the end of next month, DreamWorks’ The Croods is the first big animated blockbuster of the year from one of the major animation houses. Naturally, we’re excited to see it.
Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, and Nicolas Cage lead the brilliant voice cast. And after recently seeing a new clip with Reynolds and Stone, the studio have debuted a new TV spot ahead of The Croods’ theatrical release in just a matter of weeks.

DreamWorks’ The Croods will be hitting theatres in less than a month, and the anticipation for the animated adventure-comedy film has been building nicely. The studio treated us to a great new trailer before Christmas, giving us a look at the prehistoric family.
And with just a few more weeks to go before it lands, they’ve debuted a new clip in which we get to see the characters voiced by Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone go hunting.

The Croods is DreamWorks Animations' latest family-friendly comedy adventure, telling the tale of a family of cavemen forced to up sticks - literally - when an earthquake destroys their home. This exclusive Croods clip isn't about that, however: it's about prehistoric fails.Starring the dopey but loveable Thunk (Clark Duke) and his hapless cavedog, it reveals that even way back in the internet-less land before time there was still plenty of failing going on. We suspect our reaction may be out of step with the general consensus of press at our Berlin Film Festival screening of the "The Croods" today, if the guffaws and applause were anything to go by, but really that had us kind of baffled. But while the premise, with its roots in ancient human history, is quite promising, it doesn't appear to have been fertile enough for Sanders and Dimicco who elect to...

Let’s face it, animated films are a huge deal. To the studios that make them, they are a guaranteed cash cow. Next to Pixar, Dreamworks Animation is right at the top of the heap with hits like Shrek, How To Train Your Dragon, and the Madagascar films. HeyUGuys was invited to New York this week to take a look at what Dreamworks has in store for us in 2013, and I can tell you, it’s pretty cool.
I made my way to the screening location, where we were able to watch roughly half hour of footage from the three films slated for release next year: The Croods, Turbo and Mr. Peabody And Sherman. What I saw was incredible, even though a lot of the footage was still not complete. All of the films will be released in 3-D, and judging from the content, they should be amazing! So let’s get right to it.

The Croods is set to come our way in Spring 2013, and coming from DreamWorks Animation, and with a voice cast as excellent as it has, it’s sure to be one of the best animated films of next year.
We caught the first trailer for the film back in October, and with its release now only a few months away, Apple have debuted the second trailer, giving us another great look at the animated adventure we have coming our way soon.
“Surviving in a volcanic world is tough enough, but caveman Grug gets a rude awakening when an earthquake forces him to leave behind the only world he knows. With his family in tow, he ventures out into the volatile world in search of a new home. The situation becomes even more complicated when Grug’s family–but in particular his eldest daughter–become smitten with a nomad they encounter on their dangerous journey.

DreamWorks Animation is apparently expected to take something like a $50 million bath on the $145 million budgeted Rise of the Guardians, probably not what Fox wanted to see before their new distribution deal with the animation house which begins with The Croods on March 22 and includes Turbo (July 19) and Mr. Peabody & Sherman (November 1) and today we have a new trailer for the first of those releases.
