Exclusive: Yes, there have been a number of film distributors — big ones — who’ve cut and run during the pandemic, jettisoning their movies onto PVOD or selling them outright to streamers as domestic exhibition hangs in a fractured state.
And despite how prevalent it has become, from Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s Trolls World Tour to Paramount’s $125M sale of Coming 2 America to Amazon, I’ve heard often and again from studio sources that neither PVOD nor streaming sales make up for the maximum revenues and profits that the theatrical windows downstream revenue model yields. This despite the fact that there have been ample discussions between studios and the big circuits about a dynamic shortened theatrical window/PVOD revenue share model following Universal and AMC’s deal.

Hollywood actress Jessica Alba feels women will not take a step back as the entertainment industry moves towards revival in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic. She says women are going to be in high demand, adding that if anybody is going to stay at home, it will probably be men.
"I actually feel like women are in such high demand that if anybody is going to be staying at home, it will probably be going to be the man," Alba said while talking about how the industry will change after the virus crisis, and the place of women in the new reality.
"There really is a major pull on women -- behind the camera, in executive positions, in positions of power -- because it is proven that your business will thrive and will be better off, if there's diversity. So, if you have too much of one thing or the another,...

Call it the J.J. Effect. Animatronics — along with similar techniques like puppetry, makeup effects and miniatures — is making a comeback.
The work was long responsible for some of the most iconic characters and scenes in cinema history, then shunted aside in the 1990s as CGI became cheaper and delivered ever more realistic results. But J.J. Abrams, a director who’d grown up in the effects heyday of the ’70s and ’80s, followed his love of those arts and the cinematic language of “Star Wars” when he included a wide range of animatronics in 2015’s “The Force Awakens.” Now, Hollywood is rediscovering its love of puppets controlled by motors, gears and cables, whether via the expansion of the “Star Wars” universe or in movies like Netflix’s “Dark Crystal” reboot, “Age of Resistance.”
Film fans of a certain age (which include many of today’s directors) never fell out of love with so-called practical effects.

Actress Jessica Alba says she has a "little bit of a detachment" in the entertainment world.
"I don't, I sort of think of the time I spend with my kids and I think more about, like, my job with my company that I created. And, sort of, you know, that feels more attached to the legacy that I'm trying to build and leave for my children," Alba said when asked if she thinks about the legacy she is leaving for her children while picking roles.

Flipper played a shambolic, hypnotic rendition of their anthem “Sex Bomb” earlier this year on their 40th anniversary tour, and they’ve now made it into a music video.
The clip opens with testimonials from the Melvins’ Dale Crover, Minutemen’s Mike Watt and artist Shepard Fairey, and it features clips from throughout the band’s career. Jesus Lizard singer David Yow, who has been touring as the group’s frontman, bellows the song’s chorus over and over again … “Sex bomb, baby!”

Jimmy Kimmel’s sidekick Guillermo made his presence felt Sunday at Fox’s Emmy Awards, when the ABC late-night show returned with its bizarre interview segment, “Back-to-Back.”
If you’ve never seen this silliness before, it’s kind of like a regular face-to-face interview — just, you know, back-to-back. Hand mirrors help the two converse, though they’re certainly not the only props Guillermo had in his trunk.
First up, the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” security guard shared a giant candy necklace with Jason Bateman, who hasn’t been eating sugars lately. But hey, it’s a party.

Guillermo then gets Alex Borstein to donate her Emmy Award to Flipper, the famous dolphin from his (or her?) self-titled 1960s TV show. Borstein actually does a mean dolphin, as we found out in her revised acceptance speech.

Stars: Elijah Wood, Stephen McHattie, Madeleine Sami, Martin Donovan, Michael Smiley | Written by Toby Harvard | Directed by Ant Timpson
Directed by Ant Timpson in his feature directorial debut, based on his idea and written by Toby Harvard (The Greasy Strangler), Come to Daddy is a New Zealand film project. It stars Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings), someone not unfamiliar with New Zealand film work, as Norval Greenwood, a thirty-something musical artist who travels to a cabin in the middle-of-nowhere and attempts to reconnect with his father.
Stephen McHattie plays Gordon, a wonderfully manic and unpredictable man, played with a real tension that creates discomfort and awkwardness in the scenes between himself and Norval in the early stages of the movie. Norval begins as a cocksure and almost arrogant character with a past shadowed with demons of alcoholism and self-harm, but as the film progresses and the relationship between father and son grows and adapts,...

L7 first came together about 19 hours south of Seattle, in Los Angeles, in 1985. Although they had no claim to the Emerald City’s grunge explosion, they signed to Sub Pop, toured with Nirvana and shocked audiences more efficiently than their Lollapalooza contemporaries. When Rolling Stone ranked the 50 Greatest Grunge Albums earlier this week, L7 notched two LPs on the list: 1990’s metal-punk hybrid Smell the Magic (its “Shove” could serve as a genre blueprint) and its 1992 follow-up, Bricks Are Heavy, which is home to the hit “Pretend We’re Dead...

Brian Trenchard-Smith has, by his own estimation, directed "42 crimes against cinema"... which brings us to his latest filmmaking infraction, Drive Hard starring John Cusack and Thomas Jane.
From Rlj/Image Entertainment, Drive Hard will be available via VOD this week on September 4 and in theaters and on iTunes on October 3.
The action/adventure film was written by Brian along with Chad Law, Evan Law and Brigitte Jean Allen. Here's a synopsis:
With a heist in mind, a mysterious American called Keller (Cusack) arrives in Brisbane needing a getaway driver. Rather than recruit one from the local underworld, he tricks a driving school instructor, Roberts (Jane) into taking the wheel.
Keller chose well, Roberts just happens to be a washed out Formula-One driver. Chased by the cops and the mob, Roberts is forced to use his racing skills to evade pursuit on a Hard Drive that takes the two along the Gold Coast of Australia.

Prolific screenwriter Everett De Roche, who died in Melbourne yesterday, was one of the instigators of the Ozploitation genre movement of the 1970s and 80s.
The Us-born writer, who migrated to Australia with his wife in 1968, was 67. He had battled with cancer for three years. He started as an in-house writer for Crawfords for four years in the 1970s, penning episodes of Homicide, Division 4, Ryan and Matlock Police.
His first feature screenplay was Colin Eggleston.s Long Weekend in 1978. Among his film credits were Richard Franklin.s Patrick (1978), Simon Wincer.s Harlequin (1980), Franklin.s Roadgames (1981), David Hemmings. Race to the Yankee Zephyr (1981), Russell Mulcahy.s Razorback (1984) and Franklin.s Visitors (2003).
In 2008 he and director Jamie Blanks collaborated on a remake of Long Weekend, for which he added two characters, a baby dugong and several scenes. "The basic environmental message works as well today as it did in 1978," he said.

Anglo/Australian filmmaker Brian Trenchard-Smith is developing Sword Point, a drama about an injured Chinese gymnast who takes up fencing in a bid to realise her dream of representing China in sport.

Marine conservationist and film-maker who started out by hunting sharks and ended up defending them
Ron Taylor, who has died aged 78, was a great observer and defender of sharks. He began his career earning a living as a spearfisher, and later filmed some of the most exciting sequences for Steven Spielberg's 1975 film Jaws, but then spent the rest of his life educating people about the animals he regarded as "fascinating marine creatures". "There are over 360 different shark species in the world's oceans," he noted in an interview in 2007, "yet only a few of those are potentially dangerous. Each one has its own characteristics. Sharks have evolved to fulfil a different niche in the marine environment."
Sharks existed before the dinosaurs, and prospered for millions of years, yet during their lifetime Taylor and his wife, Valerie – an equally passionate advocate – saw them come under threat. Many are killed for their teeth,...

In his role as showrunner for HBO's Boardwalk Empire, Terence Winter usually gets a fast response from any agent he calls. This was not the case in 1990, however, when he was 29 and trying to break into television. As a newly minted lawyer, a Brooklyn native transplanted to L.A., and an aspiring sitcom writer, he followed up with agents who'd agreed to read his scripts, but soon gave up in frustration when he realized they couldn't distinguish his carefully crafted spec episodes from the hundreds of other submissions on their desks.
A less determined person might have renounced his ambitions, but Terry Winter sized up the situation and devised a creative solution. After learning that a New York-based law school colleague was bonded as a literary agent, he made the following offer: using his friend's name on the letterhead, Winter would fund the creation of a new literary agency (which...

I remember a couple of years back when "Grindhouse" was just starting its marketing campaign. The very first trailer was basically the fake "Machete" trailer. I thought it looked amazing and was horribly disappointed a few weeks later when I learned that "Machete" was indeed just one of the fake trailers that would play in between the two features ("Death Proof" and "Planet Terror").
But apparently I wasn't the only one. Soon there were calls from the fans to make an actual movie out of "Machete". And now here we are... with a full length feature film opening this week!
Director Robert Rodriguez has pulled together quite an interesting ensemble for the flick, and I thought it would be fun to run down some of the faces you'll see on the screen, where you've seen them before and what you might see them in again soon!
