The federal government’s crypto crackdown is hitting Hollywood again — this time targeting a starry animated Web3 series featuring the voices of Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Chris Rock, Jane Fonda, Seth MacFarlane and more.
The Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday charged the creators of the Nft cartoon series Stoner Cats for an unregistered offering of NFTs. Kunis and Kutcher not only lent their voices to the cast but also went on a media tour to tout the project.
Stoner Cats 2 LLC agreed to pay a $1 million civil penalty and use it to establish a fund to return money to the buyers of the NFTs, the SEC said in a statement. It did not admit or deny any wrongdoing.
Stoner Cats launched in 2021 as an animated series funded by selling NFTs to buyers. The series is about the wacky adventures of cats who learn to talk after inhaling medical marijuana.

The first night of the 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards is taking place on Saturday, Sept. 3, and we’ll see where the Primetime ceremony could be heading based on the first wave of winners.
With an evening that features categories for animated program, reality host, documentaries and short form, we could get a strong sense of where some of the support lies for the main ceremony on Monday, Sept. 12.
There are significant history-making moments that can take place.
Barack Obama could become the second U.S. president to win an Emmy for outstanding narrator for Netflix’s “Our Great National Parks.” Dwight Eisenhower won in 1956, while still in office when he picked up the Governors Award “for his use and encouragement of television.”
If Obama wins, he’ll be halfway to Egot status after netting two Grammys for best spoken word album for “Dreams from My Father” (2006) and “The Audacity of...

Shia Labeouf hasn’t had the best of times in the last few months, and is now reportedly blacklisted in Hollywood due to extensive assault and other abuse allegations that come after multiple problems in recent years. Despite making a recent comeback with Honey Boy and The Peanut Butter Falcon, and being in the running for an McU role, Labeouf’s career now seems to be at a standstill. Still, if you want to hear him as a surfing penguin, his largely forgotten 2007 movie Surf’s Up is currently dominating Netflix.
According to FlixPatrol, Surf’s Up has broken into the Top 10 most-watched films list in the US and is now just behind Hummingbird and Catch Me If You Can in terms of subscriber popularity, sitting at #10. The 2007 CGI comedy features Labeouf and actors such as Jeff Bridges and Zooey Deschanel in a spoof of surf documentaries, with Shia playing Cody Maverick,...

Toy Story 2 is one of the best sequels ever made. That is a miracle given all the obstacles that almost derailed it.
It’s the eve of Toy Story 2’s 20th anniversary, which makes it a fantastic moment to look at how we almost didn’t get this amazing sequel. If Toy Story 2 had failed, there’s a good chance Pixar, as a newly public company, would have gone down with it—and we certainly wouldn’t have gotten the two more recent and beloved additions to the series. But as frightening as a world without Pixar films might be, Toy Story 2’s incredible box office and critical success was no guarantee. The production was fraught with difficulties, from which Pixar learned some valuable lessons—and a great movie managed to come out on the other side.
Here are just some of the disasters the movie avoided.

A guitar-playing Tibetan mastiff must prove himself in this shonky, haphazard animation that clearly couldn’t afford to get Jack Black involved
This makeweight, narratively haphazard digimation synthesises Kung Fu Panda and School of Rock, without going to the expense of hiring Jack Black. Guitar-toting Tibetan mastiff Bodi’s protection of a mountain sheep community proceeds via riffs and lifts: a furry Zootropolis-like menagerie, a robot knock-off of Wall-e and a Poundland reduction of the Sing songbook. (A few seconds of Foo Fighters and – unexpectedly – Radiohead is all we get.)
Going solo with shaky material, ex-Pixar man Ash Brannon (Toy Story 2) composes the odd amusing sight gag, but homogenises his notionally eastern backdrop terribly: compared with the artistry of last year’s Kubo and the Two Strings, Rock Dog is like the hastily assembled toy in a Happy Meal.

Blending the coming-of-age formula with a musical journey makes for a fitting collaboration. During those formative years, when we as teenagers attempt to discover exactly who we are and how we fit into this world, our own quest is often enriched, and illustrated by a soundtrack, as our change in mentality and outlook is matched by our musical choices, constantly discovering new sounds, bands and artists that change our own perception of the world we inhabit. Then there’s the social element, epitomised in Almost Famous – in how this art-form brings us together with other likeminded individuals – and this is what lays down the foundations for Ash Brannon’s animation Rock Dog to thrive off, steeped in relatable themes. Only difference is, our protagonist is a dog.

Rock Dog is not one of those crossover hits that parents can enjoy just as much as their kids. Far from it. Uninvolving, unfunny and visually inferior to its peers, Rock Dog is a straight-to-dvd production at best. How it managed to sneak its way onto the big-screen, we may never know. Luke Wilson provides the voice of Bodi, a Mastiff introduced on Snow Mountain in Tibet. His job is guarding the wool-spinning sheep there from a nasty pack of wolves led by Linnux (Lewis Black). To avoid distractions, Mastiff leader (and Bodi’s dad) Khampa (J.K. Simmons) forbids all music from the mountain. But when a radio is dropped by a passing airplane, Bodi decides he wants to be a rock ‘n’ roll star. Defying his father’s wishes, he heads to the Zootopia-like big city, and finds the reclusive cat rock legend Angus Scattergood (Eddie Izzard), who needs a new song fast.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Presidents' Day weekend was an interesting one at the box office, and as with most holiday weekends, it was particularly difficult to figure out how things might fare, other than The Lego Batman Movie, which remained at #1 with almost $45 million over the four-day weekend. Fifty Shades Darker followed with $21.3 million, about a 50% drop. Last week, I thought that the Ice Cub comedy Fist Fight would beat The Great Wall, although it seemed like it could be a close race. Nope. Matt Damon’s action epic came in third place with $21.6 million, which is a couple million more than my original prediction, but The Fist Fight fell short of my prediction by almost $10 million, grossing $14.5 million in its first four days.

But when Khampa’s son Bodi (Wilson) discovers a radio dropped by a passing airplane, it takes just a few guitar licks for his fate to be sealed: Bodi wants to be a rock ‘n’ roll star.

"If you could feel what I'm feeling, it's the answer to the question of my life." Lionsgate has unveiled a new Us trailer for the animated movie Rock Dog, originally produced in China. This musical is about a dog who realizes it's his destiny to become a rock star. Luke Wilson voices Bodi, a Tibetan Mastiff who discovers it's his dream to become a musician when a radio falls out of the sky. The voice cast includes Eddie Izzard, J.K. Simmons, Lewis Black, Kenan Thompson, Mae Whitman, Jorge Garcia, Matt Dillon and Sam Elliott as "Fleetwood Yak". This looks fun, and it has some wacky moments, but from what I've heard it's not that great. It looks a bit cheesy and the songs don't seem catchy, but you never know. Give it a spin. Here's the new official Us trailer (+ poster) for Ash Brannon's Rock Dog, direct from YouTube:...

"You're not going to be a musician, Bodi, you're going to be a guard! Get used to it." Lionsgate has released a trailer for an animated movie called Rock Dog, which seemingly came out of nowhere. When asked about their inclination for kidnapping comedies, Joel Coen recently told Variety, “I’m not sure why. They are all very different. We should probably give that a rest.” He and Ethan Coen are responsible for three of the finest kidnapping comedies ever made, and are perhaps adding a fourth to their résumé this weekend.
The addition of comedy into a crime story is hardly a new prospect, but the kidnapping comedy is a wonderfully specific little nook in this often darkly funny cinematic world. The Coens practically own this genre — if you can call it a genre –having covered and re-covered it in such uniquely different ways.
Their fourth kidnapping comedy (although I doubt they would refer to any of these films as such), Hail, Caesar!, follows a Hollywood studio fixer (Josh Brolin) whose work life begins to unravel after the kidnapping of one of his biggest stars,...

As much fun as Turtles Day (as I now affectionately call the Thursday of New York Comic Con) was, it’s most definitely not the only awesome thing about Nycc. There’s always so much awesome stuffed into those four days that it’s hard to sum it up.
This year, to assist me in my round-up, I thought I’d finally try out a New Method of Doing Things, given that my awesome friend Cleolinda Jones finds it so useful, and that she’s been using it to successfully round-up all of the online things we mention during our Made of Fail podcast (which is still going, by the way! Our latest episode was Dragon Con: The Wrath of Con. Lisssstennn!)
So even though I’m still going to hit the highlights below, I’m also going to direct you afterwards to my brand new, shiny first effort at using Storify (woo!

It was rumored just last week that Pixar had removed director Bob Peterson from The Good Dinosaur, which would have been his first solo-directing gig after serving as co-director on Up. Today the Los Angeles Times confirms the news, quoting the studio's president, Ed Catmull: "All directors get really deep in their films... Sometimes you just need a different perspective to get the idea out. Sometimes directors ... are so deeply embedded in their ideas it actually takes someone else to finish it up. I would go so far as to argue that a lot of live-action films would be better off with that same process." This is the fourth time in eight movies as I mentioned with my last post the changes to recent Pixar films Brave and Cars 2 as well as John Lasseter taking over direction from Ash Brannon on Toy Story 2 and the removal of...

In recent history we've seen John Lasseter step in and take away directorial reigns from Brad Lewis on Cars 2 and then Brenda Chapman was ousted from the director's chair on Brave and replaced by Mark Andrews with Steve Purcell given a co-director credit. Many would argue these are two of Pixar's worst films and in my opinion Brave is their worst film. Well, it seems there are some issues in the house of Pixar yet again. A couple weeks back Disney held their D23 Expo and featured new concept art and information for their upcoming film The Good Dinosaur, which was to be directed by Bob Petersen who was given a co-director credit alongside Pete Docter on Up. However, Petersen wasn't on hand to present the footage that was shown, instead a newly announced co-director, Peter Sohn, and producer Denise Ream handled those duties. The Good Dinosaur was originally...

Disney have just announced that Jennifer Lee will be co-directing their 53′d animation feature movie, Frozen alongside previously announced director Chris Buck. The movie features the voices from Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, “Frozen” and tell us that Frozen will be the ‘coolest comedy-adventure ever to hit the big screen’.
Jennifer Lee has writing credits which include the recently released (if you’re in the Us) / upcoming release (if you’re here in the UK) Wreck-It Ralph and has obviously impressed the Mouse House as she’s been given the promotion to co-director. Questions have to be asked though. I wonder is why a second director needed to be brought onto the project. Could Frozen be melting in hot water? I guess time will tell as it’s due out in the UK 20th December 2013.
More info below in the official press release.

Exclusive: ABC has put in development Between Park & Lex, a dramedy written by Maria Maggenti (Monte Carlo) and produced by ABC Studios and Ryan Reynolds and Allan Loeb’s DarkFire TV. As the title suggests, the hourlong dramedy is set in New York City. It centers on a mother and daughter who team up as amateur sleuths. Highlighting the complex dynamic and humor of a mother/daughter relationship, they balance their day jobs and regular lives with solving crimes on the side. Maggenti, Reynolds and Loeb executive produce with DarkFire’s two other principals, Jonathon Komack Martin and Steven Pearl. The project falls outside of Dark TV’s first-look deal at 20th Century Fox TV. Under that deal, the CAA-repped company recently set up two comedy projects at Fox: a live-action half-hour from writers Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay and an animated show from writers Mark Torgove & Paul Kaplan and Ash Brannon.

Ryan Reynolds and Allan Loeb’s company DarkFire has set two comedy projects at Fox, a live-action half-hour from writers Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay (Clash Of The Titans) and an animated show from writers Mark Torgove & Paul Kaplan (NBC’s Outsourced) and Ash Brannon (Surf’s Up). Both shows are produced by 20th Century Fox TV. This marks an early start for DarkFire’s second development season. Reynolds and Loeb launched the company last May, blending their production banners with partners Jonathon Komack Martin and Steven Pearl, respectively. DarkFire has been based at 20th Century Fox TV with a two-year overall deal. In its first development cycle last year, DarkFire sold two high-profile projects for Fox, live-action comedy Guidance, which received a put pilot commitment with Tyler Labine attached to star, and animated comedy And Then There Was Gordon, which is still in the works with a presentation order.

In a story on Kristen Bell joining the cast of Jennifer Getzinger's cinematic adaptation of Neil Labute's play "Some Girls," The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively revealed that the actress-formerly-known-as-Veronica Mars will "provide the speaking and singing voice" as the lead in Disney's upcoming feature "Frozen," which means she will play the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale character the Snow Queen (first published way back in 1845). Additionally, the trade states that Warner Bros. and Weed Road (Akiva Goldsman's WB-based production shingle) have picked up the forthcoming graphic novel "Bolivar" for Irish animator Kealan O'Rourke to write and direct.
Tucked away in the "Some Girls"/"Frozen" story is the tidbit that Chris Buck, a legendary animator who worked on everything from Brad Bird's "Family Dog" episode of "Amazing Stories" to "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" to "Little Mermaid," before co-directing Disney's lush 1999 animated feature "Tarzan" (with Kevin Lima), will direct.

Toy Story 2 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack Walt Disney Entertainment 1999 & 2009/Rated G/Running Time 92 Mins List Price: $49.99 – Available November 1, 2011 Being that Pixar Studios has the luxury of animation, they can take apart a film project a rebuild it several times during the production process. Toy Story 2 almost went straight to video, but John Lasseter had the foresight to see the potential of this sequel to his colossal hit – the first film in the Pixar canon – taking the reins and rethinking the project. It's a good thing too, because the film not only went on to great success, but is considered to be one of the best sequels ever made. In the first film, cowboy Woody (Tom Hanks) and space-cop Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) fight for their owner Andy's attention until Woody saves Buzz from their sadistic neighbor, Sid. Let's start with silence. 2009's Up, like most Pixar movies, takes place in a landscape that's recognizably part of the real world (a South American plateau), yet not really (a carefully unnamed plateau, one "Paradise Falls" of the imagination). The air is silent and dry, charged with the menace of potential swooping predators. Cranky old Carl Frederickson (voiced by Ed Asner) is here, having attempted to follow all his life in the footsteps of explorer Charles F. Muntz (Christopher Plummer), whose exploits have inspired him his whole life to follow in the prematurely disappeared, presumed dead pioneer's path.
It turns out Muntz is something of a false prophet, hiding out in the landscape trying to capture one last giant rare bird. Carl and his young helpmate Russell eventually defeat Muntz, whose reactionary views are ruining the landscape, which is—basically— an allegory for every Pixar movie thus far (except for Finding Nemo,...

Sony Pictures Animation has something of a history with A) picking up former Pixar bods (Surf’s Up's Ash Brannon) and finding success with CG movies based on children’s stories (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs). And its latest acquisition ticks both boxes, as Doug Sweetland has signed on to make his first full-length film with Familiars. The book, written by Adam Jay Epstein and Andrew Jacobson, finds three young magical apprentices who are spirited away by an evil queen. Their only hope for rescue lies with their companion animal familiars – a cat, a blue jay and a tree frog. While we’re still puzzling over the tree frog as a familiar (we’re guessing a toad was too gross or cliché for today’s whippersnappers), the story sounds like a blend of Harry Potter and The Incredible Journey, which Epstein and Jacobson are now turning into a script.

For quite some time Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson have been great friends, but haven't managed to make a movie together, until now. However, they won't exactly be appearing on-screen together as EW's Hollywood Insider says they will voice two animated turkeys, Reggie and Brock, who find a time machine and travel back to the first Thanksgiving to take themselves off the menu. The film is aptly titled Turkeys and will also feature Luke Wilson's vocal talents as well. I have high hopes for this one as it comes from director Ash Brannon who was responsible for two of my favorite animated films Surf's Up and Toy Story 2. Peter Farrelly (one half of the Farrelly Brothers duo) is executive producing and was extremely excited about it. Here's an animated film for the vegetarians out there, something to put on the shelf next to "Chicken Run": it's called "Turkeys," and it's about two gobblers who discover a time machine, travel back to pre-Colonial times and stop their kind from being made synonymous with Thanksgiving dinner. I'm not sure what else they suggest to take their place on the menu, but I'm guessing it won't be another kind of meat, which would make this like an adaptation of a Chik-fil-a commercial.
Variety reports that the turkey duo will be voiced by Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson, which implies that these birds will be lovable loser-types: slackers, surfers or even stoners. "Turkeys" will be a family film though, despite the fact that it's being executive produced Peter Farrelly, so don't expect explicit drug jokes or anything too raunchy.
