- Local snowboarding legend Beck McKaye returns home from the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics with a gold medal, only to be later found dead.
- The McKayes know that Varland's ad campaign using Beck's image is not going away, so Ethan decides to take some action to combat his feelings toward Adrien. Jen, who doesn't totally agree with Ethan's course of action, is nonetheless eased somewhat by a visit from an old friend, Adam Lawson. However, that feeling of ease may be short lived. One forgotten person who has been negatively affected by Beck's death and Varland's ad campaign is AJ, only one person who can see that affect and can and does offer some sympathy. With Feeney's help, Quinn discovers who the recipient of the $50,000 blackmail money was. Quinn does question Ryan's action in deleting any of that direct information from Beck's computer. But in finding out the whole story, Quinn may get himself into some trouble. And Ryan and Nicole's relationship hits a bump with the return of VIP guest Melina Sarris, who Ryan has had a sexual relationship with in the past on her visits and who gets whatever she wants.
- Ethan being preoccupied with a work issue - someone seemingly trying to buy out all their distributors - leaves Jen feeling increasingly isolated. She turns to Adam, unaware that he may not turn off the reporter side of himself, especially as he is asking questions of others which may lead to a sensational story about Beck. Quinn, conversely, doesn't want to talk to Adam at all, especially with the increasing knowledge he has of some unsavory aspects to Beck's life. Carrie has offered AJ a place to crash temporarily as he seems to be grasping at straws to make ends meet while he sleeps in his car. Quinn tries to be all right with Carrie's decision, while Carrie struggles with her growing attraction to AJ. The misunderstanding about his current relationship with Melina Sarris was just the first issue making Nicole feel uncomfortable with her relationship with Ryan. She begins to see his job as the resort's "cleaner", she getting caught up in the lies he tells guests for their comfort, with which she struggles, especially as it relates to Ryan as a human being in her personal life.
- Quinn suspects his uncle knows more than he's saying about Beck's involvement in the blackmail scheme.
- Jen's full disclosure about her evening with Adam and not doing anything with him because she understands how her past indiscretion has made Ethan feel leads to Ethan feeling even guiltier about cheating with Lisa, which he does not mention in return to Jen. Ethan eventually takes what he hopes is decisive action about the matter, although an action he still does not feel good about. Carrie is having problems getting the $500 back from AJ, which places their friendship on the line. As such, Carrie seeks out Quinn, who struggles with his continued feelings for her while he begins a new relationship with Isabelle. Ryan is increasingly concerned about Nicole spending time with Adrien, even if it is still in the guise of "work". In that time, Nicole sees yet another facet of Adrien's excessive life. And Ryan contemplates pulling an expensive fast one for his own benefit.
- Jen and Ethan are drifting farther apart, which is not helped by some news from Adam. While Jen turns to Adam, Lisa is there for Ethan. Beck's ghost counsels Quinn about moving on with his life in pursuing the opposite sex. Excluding Carrie who seems to be hanging out more and more with AJ, the options include Kristina Brody, who was always after Beck and may only want Quinn because he is Beck's "silver medalist", and Isabelle, a waitress at a coffee shop he has been frequenting. What Quinn decides to do is based partly on his belief that Beck committed suicide. With his own executive assistant away, Adrien asks Nicole to accompany him on a several day business trip to West Virginia, a move which Ryan believes is solely for Adrien to get closer to her. However, several people take advantage of both Adrien and Nicole's absence. AJ continues to have problems, the biggest being that he owes several thousand dollars to his drug dealers, who are a little less accommodating now that he has been cut off by Adrien. Carrie has to decide whether to trust AJ in this matter of money. And Shelby, who has been cut off by Adrien while he is away, has to figure out a way to continue to lead the life to which she is accustomed in light of her belief that Adrien knew about her and Beck's affair.
- Adrien tests Nicole's ability to keep some demanding clients happy. Jen and Ryan learn that the Tavern property is being rezoned to force them out. Ryan begins looking into Shelby's whereabouts. In a vulnerable moment Carrie admits to Quinn that she has feelings for him. Quinn tries to remain unaffected and stay committed to his relationship with Isabelle. AJ encounters a setback with his new business.
- Ethan and Jen seriously consider Adrien's latest offer for their property, unaware that he may need them more than they need him. Because of what she learns about Adrien's past love life, Nicole takes a trip to Bellingham to deal with someone from her own past. After being knocked unconscious at the coroner's office, Ryan awakens in the office to find that the coroner has been murdered, unaware that Feeney saw him leave the office. After Quinn confronts him because of Feeney, Ryan has to decide what to do not only about the coroner's murder and being at the crime scene when it happened, but also about the coroner telling him that Beck's toxicology screen, in reality, showed high levels of drugs in his system at the time of death, which is contrary to the coroner's official report. With Quinn preoccupied with Ryan and Nicole away, Carrie is feeling alone in dealing with her pregnancy, about which only Quinn knows so far. And AJ saves a junkie named Kate from Dante. In spending time with Kate, AJ may get a more realistic picture about how far his life has descended.
- After Carrie confesses she has feelings for him Quinn struggle with his feelings for both Isabelle and Carrie. Sensing his uncertainty, Isabelle ends things with him. Meanwhile AJ gets deeper into trouble, Adrien continues to pursue Nicole and Ryan continues to dig into Adrien's affairs.
- The life of the McKaye family takes two extreme turns first when Beck wins an Olympic gold medal in snowboarding at the Torino games, and second, approximately two weeks later, when he is found dead at the bottom of a hill back home at Whistler, his death seemingly from an unfortunate fall. At the time, Ethan, who was managing his career, was evaluating which of the many sponsorship options Beck should take. The sponsorship option from Varland Gear Ethan wanted nothing to do with as he blames the Varlands for many of his life issues. Ethan still holds a grudge against anyone named Varland, despite Beck being friends with Adrien's son, AJ. Little did Ethan know that Beck was trying to make his own deals on the advice and help of his Uncle Ryan, who was using Beck to further his own career in impressing VIP clients at the Varland Resort, such as visiting Steve Newman. Beck was also letting his gold medal go to his head in many ways including living a fast life and cheating on Carrie, who caught him in the act with another woman. Quinn felt torn in his love for his brother but also in his long held crush on Carrie himself. But a discovery by Quinn in Beck's closet may change everything. Meanwhile, Nicole is having problems making ends meet, a fact she is hiding from Carrie. Nicole will discover within herself how far she will go to pay the bills.
- Quinn attempts to learn more about his brother's life by befriending A.J.
- Ethan firing Lisa to cover up their indiscretion backfires on him when Jen rehires her due to a short term staff shortage. Ethan has to decide how to handle the situation for his, Jen and Lisa's benefit. With his newfound bliss with Jen, Ethan has allowed Jen to offer their home to AJ as a place to stay for as long as he needs, which quietly irks Quinn. A move by AJ while the McKayes are away only solidifies Quinn's feelings. Initially a team of two with regular partner Feeney, Quinn assembles a team of four - adding Isabelle then Carrie - for Murphy's annual unofficial scavenger hunt. Quinn gets to see Isabelle in a different light, while Carrie finally comes to the realization that she has feelings for Quinn in seeing him together with Isabelle. Following their night together, Ryan and Nicole have different views of their personal relationship. Nicole's perspective is affected partly by Adrien involving her more and more into exciting aspects of his business life, which she does not recognize as his effort to get her into his personal life. And Adrien asks Ryan to have some difficult discussions in Adrien's land acquisition, namely with Ryan's old boss Justin Talbert who got Ryan his professional start in life in Whistler, and with Ethan.
- As Quinn and Ryan delve deeper into Beck's past, they discover a shocking secret.
- The shooting incident at the assistant coroner's house leads to the police releasing Ryan and reopening the case into Beck's death, including a move which may be painful for Ethan and Jen. Ryan's release still does not deal with what Adrien sees as Ryan's betrayal against him. Nicole learns about Carrie's pregnancy, which gives Carrie another shoulder on which to lean as she contemplates what to do about the baby. Nicole also confronts Adrien about what she found out in Bellingham. AJ is pursued by a couple of thugs, which leads to him being in a prison of a different kind. As he goes through his withdrawal, AJ has time to think about how to make what he believes the world right again. Shelby believes she has some leverage in dealing with Adrien concerning their divorce. All of these issues combined lead to the revelation of how Beck died, as well as the incorrect belief by some involved about how he died. But the revelation does not come without tragic consequences.
- It's the start of the next winter tourist season in Whistler. A dedication ceremony for a new training facility named after Beck is taking place. Urged by his mother, Quinn, who has been away at school solely to escape all the bad things that have happened in Whistler, decides at the last minute to return for the ceremony. However, it is just as much to reconnect with Carrie, recently moved out with a roommate named Leah, to see if there is still romantic feelings between the two of them, despite all those issues. Quinn's return may be marred by Travis Hollier, the arrogant and condescending hotshot snowboarder who is seen as Beck's heir apparent, and by what Carrie may have to say about their relationship. Ryan, who has been working as a back-country adventure guide since being fired by Adrien, has laid low also to escape from his previous life. He reemerges for the ceremony. His reunion with Nicole may be strained if only because she has decided not only to remain working for Varland, but to take Ryan's former position as head of guest relations. Ryan may not be as happy as he tries to appear to family and friends. With both Ryan and Quinn gone and Ethan's accidental death, Jen has taken in a boarder named Derek, a Whistler police officer. In his spare time, Derek has been helping her with last minute arrangements to reopen the new, improved tavern, to coincide with Beck's dedication ceremony. Derek's time with Jen may be compromised with news he learns about Ethan. And with Shelby charged with Beck's death, Adrien's role in the cover-up and AJ's suicide over the matter, the Varland name has taken a beating publicly. As such, Adrien is facing difficulties getting any financing to battle Melina's hostile takeover bid. He may have to resort to accepting the one offer he didn't know was coming and the one which has some personal strings attached. With AJ dead, he also has Carrie on his mind, after the news from Nicole that she is his daughter.
- Quinn, Griff, Carrie and Leah have a road trip planned to Mount Baker in Washington State for a halfpipe competition. Things are already tense at the beginning of their trip because of an article where the reporter was able to pit Quinn and Griff against each other, and because of Carrie being on edge due to the whole Adrien situation, he who seems to be trying to buy his way into her life. So each subsequent issue that arises on their trip brings out the frustration all are feeling. Their friendships may not be able to survive making it back to Whistler. Nicole receives news that she has been chosen among all the Varland Resort staff for the lucrative assignment to visit an up and coming winery to secure a wine tasting symposium for the resort. On her arrival, she finds that her getting the assignment had more to do with her personal life than her professional life. Marshall Lancaster, the number two man in all of Varland Worldwide, on short notice, is coming to Whistler. Jada is certain it is to give her her notice, in light of Adrien's move to open a casino. Ryan does whatever he can to protect both Jada and his jobs. And Peter, who will be in Whistler until the environmental assessment judgment is made for the casino site, asks Jen for a favor with regard to the work. Peter has an interesting way of making Jen feel more comfortable with the job than is her initial apprehension.
- Jen is the target of backlash against her being the face against the casino, that backlash even from some of her oldest friends. While Peter is concerned, it's Derek who comes to the rescue, part of it his professional duty, but a larger part his continued feelings for her. He demonstrates those feelings in an unusual and unexpected way. Quinn and Leah are moving at different speeds in their relationship, the one who feels neglected falling into the arms of another for a sense of comfort. Although stating outwardly that she can handle it, Carrie is still uncomfortable with most in the Village believing that she and Adrien are in a romantic relationship. She too is angry about the negative press against him, and not feeling like she could or should come to his defense which would only fuel the fire of the rumors. Adrien shows where his business priority lies, which is not the bottom line. And Nicole lets Ryan know that she is willing to restart their personal relationship if and when he may be at an available stage. Ryan's feelings toward Nicole and Jada may be tipped in one direction when he learns of an action by one of them.
- Carrie takes sides in her friendships with Leah and Quinn when she finds out that Leah slept with Travis, regardless of the reason. Her taking a stance may jeopardize her friendship with the one on whose side she's not, and in turn her relationship with Griff. Ryan decides to tell Adrien about what he knows regarding Jada and his father Jonus' working business relationship. Ryan takes steps, which include asking for a few favors from old and not so much friends anymore, to ensure he comes out the other side in tact. Adrien uses the information to speak to his father directly about the casino deal. He will find out just how far Jada has infiltrated the company and in part the reason why. Peter remains concerned for Jen regarding the threats against her from unknown persons. Jen still appreciates Derek's help in the matter, unaware that he is the one who slashed her tires all in an effort to be her knight in shining armor. Nicole may give Derek a better perspective on his infatuation.
- With the nationals only a few days away to take place in Whistler, Quinn and Griff receive the news that, based on the returning team members, there will only be one open spot for a new men's half pipe team member. Quinn hits a setback in the road to the national team, he needing to make a tough choice based on that setback. Some news from Carrie about her burgeoning video career helps Quinn decide what to do. Both Adrien and Jonus makes some business decisions based on Jonus' terminal illness. But that illness in part leads to yet another revelation concerning Carrie's parentage. Nicole has to decide if she will accept a returning Elias' offer to move to New York with him. After an incident, Ryan feels the need to admit to Jada his past gambling addiction, and the current problem he faces in light of it. That problem could quickly disappear with a couple of strategic actions. And as Peter's business in Whistler wraps up earlier than expected, he and Jen have to decide if there is future for them this time around.
- Quinn makes the decision to stay in Whistler to try out for the Village snowboard team, both to find his place in the world and to continue his relationship with Carrie following their night together. Beyond Jen's initial opposition in her want for Quinn to be the first McKaye to finish school, Quinn has a few obstacles in achieving all these goals. First, he, who has not competed in years, has placed much pressure on himself in following both his father and brother's footsteps, the McKaye name which will not automatically give him one of the spots. And second, he learns the hard way that Carrie has been dating Griff, who has no idea either of Quinn and Carrie's night together, or Quinn's interest in Carrie at all. Jen and Derek are fighting their urges in their unspoken attraction to each other, they fighting that attraction largely because of their living situation. But Jen also believes it is too soon after Ethan's death, and she doesn't, in her own words, want to be a "Mrs. Robinson" to much younger Derek. Ryan knows that he is floundering in his life, and believes Nicole is the answer to his life problems. Something else may come along which may be an answer of sorts. He has to decide if it is a path into which he wants to return. And Adrien feels he has no choice but to accept his father's financial offer, which Jada is negotiating on Varland Sr.'s behalf. Adrien quickly learns that there are many strings attached to that offer.
- Quinn and rest of the freshman members of the Village snowboarding team are enduring the one week hazing ritual, kindly referred to as "hell week". But Travis seems to be taking special aim at Quinn for personal reasons. Quinn has to decide when best to fight his battles with Travis while still maintaining the bond of the team. Jen and Derek have to figure out how best to deal with their sexual liaison now that Quinn is living at home. Jen does not yet want Quinn to know, he who may not be ready for anyone seeming to replace Ethan, even if Jen and Derek's relationship is nowhere close to that stage of Derek becoming a permanent member of the family. Now that Ryan has accepted Jada's job offer and has taken over Adrien's office in the process, Ryan has a first assignment of thwarting Adrien's bid to get the necessary financing from visiting Chinese VIP, Zhao Leung. And Carrie and Leah are facing financial problems after their deadbeat former roommate fleeced them of their rent money, and left them with massive bills in the process. Carrie wants to portray an outward image to Nicole that everything is all right - even if it isn't - all in an effort for Nicole not to act as her savior.
- The annual skiers versus snowboarders floor hockey game is upcoming. Because of things going on between Griff and Carrie, and Quinn still hoping that he and Carrie will get back together, Griff eventually finds out that Carrie slept with Quinn upon his arrival back in Whistler. The three will find out if they can resolve their romantic triangle while still maintaining, if not friendship, at least harmony in time for Griff and Quinn to work as a team against the skiers. Now that Quinn knows, the next hurdle for Jen seemingly to overcome in her relationship with Derek is letting the rest of the world know, especially those that have only known her and Ethan as a couple. And Ryan is dismayed to learn that a woman he knows named Alexis Grace has checked into the resort as a VIP guest. Because of his and Alexis' history, which was more than just intimate, Ryan has to find out if her motive for being in Whistler is as she says. At the same time, Ryan realizes that Alexis being in Whistler may provide an answer to his problem with Celia and their upcoming repayment meeting.
- Now that Carrie has chosen Griff over Quinn, Leah encourages Quinn to get back into the dating scene solely to get over his sexless slump. The time is ripe now that the "snowboard bunnies" are hanging around the gym as the snowboarders train. Leah can't help but provide greater advice than getting his feet wet again. Jen can see that Ryan has some money problems, and provides a helping hand in the hopes that he will not turn to gambling as he has done in the past. Ryan may not want to admit to himself how much of a problem he has. Despite promising Nicole that he would stay away from Carrie, Adrien can't help but think about how best to get close to her, especially now that AJ is gone. He decides to use Griff as that entry point. Jada has placed Nicole in charge of a prestigious art exhibit at the resort. Despite all the high caliber talent participating, Nicole believes that having a local artist, most specifically one named Elias Noth, would bring a certain flavor currently missing. Courting Elias is a little more difficult than Nicole imagines, not delivering Noth which would place a black mark in Jada's mind about Nicole. And based on his workplace evaluation following the incident surrounding Ethan's death, Derek contemplates telling Jen that it was a bullet from his gun that killed her husband.
- The Coach's upcoming wedding, which is being held at the tavern, makes the perfect setting for people to think about relationships. Even though they both stated that it was a one time only thing, Leah, the queen of meaningless sex, contemplates telling Quinn that she wants their one sexual encounter thus far to be more than that. Jen's relationship with Derek hits another possible bump in the road with the short term arrival back in town of Peter Varland, Adrien's polar opposite brother, who was once the love of Jen's life and for who she was going to leave Ethan, that is until Peter left town without a word. Nicole is attracted to Elias despite his unsavory past, while he is hot and cold with her. She may be unprepared for the reason behind the cold. Elias, in turn, may be unprepared for her response. Meanwhile, Ryan finds out that Adrien has Varland Gear, which was a relatively small part of this overall portfolio of businesses, back up and running. On Jada's orders, Ryan tries to find out if Adrien has some grander plan in this move.
- Jen and Derek decide to go for a romantic getaway, but Jen can't help but still think about Peter. Meanwhile, it's close to a year that Beck died, and Quinn has his brother on his mind, still feeling like he is living in Beck's shadow in almost every perspective: in his mother's eyes, with Carrie, and with snowboarding. Partly because of Beck, Travis challenges both Quinn and Griff to a run down the out-of-bounds "The Drop". The trio gets into one Murphy's Law situation after another, which threatens one, two or all three making it out of the back country alive. The situation allows Quinn to reflect further on his life with Beck.
