Frankenhooker (1990)
Not mind but body blowin(g)
No pun intended -let's get right to it. The effects are quite nasty and quite interesting to say the least. This really went all out there - including showing off flesh (breast area in particular and female of course). But this also takes its sweet time - the beginning has a bang (or rather is razor sharp, sorry not sorry), but after that ... there is quite a lot of ... well nothing much happening.
I had heard of this infamous movie and I reckon if you like horror movies, you may have heard about this too. I suppose you have - no sensitivity, you can't be faint of heart ... be easily offended and all that. The main character/woman was interviewed on the disc I have ... and she looks back fondly to the movie and the shoot. Which says a lot ... and really shines through on screen. If you dig it ... you dig it. If it offends you ... well just shut it off.
Seal of Desire (2022)
Approval ... of Desire (?)
No pun intended - no Seal needed either. I feel for the actors a little bit - to a degree or whatever you want to call it. I reckon the minute it starts it may have already lost (you) ... as viewers that is. Because our main character tells us from the off what he thinks of himself ... and he thinks quite highly of his character ... and not much about others.
Well he may disagree, saying he does care and that is why he does what he does ... but if you boil it down, it is not true. Of course, the actors involved in this ... all quite beautiful ... so if you are into that ... and don't care much about story ... or development ... well you can have some of that. And there is a small amount of nudity too - for better or worse. The story goes more to the latter ...
El Amarre (2021)
Be careful what you wish for
I think that is what they should have called the movie (see my summary line), so as always no pun intended. You have to be in love ... with horror movies that is ... to dig that. Although of course maybe if you were madly in love with someone you may understand our main character ... at least to a degree ... because there is no excuse if you think about it.
But as with most horror movies if characters would not act irrationally, we would not have a movie in the end. So just go with the flow and let the really bad decision making commence. Of course the movie is ridiculous ... but it has to be ... some effects are well done, so maybe that will sway viewers ... low budget - make of it what you want. Love lost ... not entirely .... it's magic (or voodoo)
Miénteme (2022)
Nailed it
No pun intended - while you may think I am talking about one thing (well in a way that is not entirely wrong), I am actually talking about something else entirely (and way more than the other ... innuendo style). There is a saying, that if someone has a hammer, everything looks like a nail to them. And that is quite true .. especially for our main female character at first and then her husband after her.
It is a bit refreshing at times (especially the way they portray their marriage and relationship) ... but it also feels a bit too distant and cold for it's own sake. Some things also feel way over the top, so there is that. Still funny, still light hearted ... if you suspend your disbelief of course. Decent acting.
Ni una más (2024)
Perspective
No pun intended here - we do watch and experience things as ourselves ... we are supposed to have empathy. Which distinguishes us from animals ... but there is more that makes us different. Humans can be quite evil and menacing ... in a very planned way.
That all said, the show is really well crafted. It may be or feel a bit long, especially with the first twist of the show (which I think almost can be called a red herring - it does play a role later on, but not to the degree we may think when we first watch it).
Acting is top notch and the show really challenges you. What to believe? Who to believe? What are your values and what do you think happened? Even heroes are not without flaws ... without making mistakes ... some are quite costly ... but you can't blame them (her) ... if there is doubt, you do want to question, especially demeanor wise ... this really depicts greatly what teenage girls and boys go through. More the former than the latter - and it is important to see that.
Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024)
Family edition
It's all in the family - someone took Fast & Furious notes. So no pun intended - if anything the Bad Boys have to apologize. But let's keep it "real" . This is a movie, this is insane, this does not make much sense. It will either be carried by the charm (or lack thereof) from our main characters or it won't.
Martin Lawrence is being annoying - always nagging away ... but is he? Because there is an inciting incident, that kind of changes his demeanor. Will Smith has his own issues of course - and we still are dealing with the backlash from the third movie (and I still feel they missed a great chance - naming the third part 4 life? I mean come ... they could have called it ride or die and held on to the 4 ... 4 here).
Good action sequences, even the ones with the Uwe Boll technique (as some are saying online - they may look weird as behind the scenes looks ... but they do work in the movie - very well edited and all that). The question is are you ready to shut off your brain and enjoy this for what it is ... many things do not make sense otherwise. Like not taking one individual who proved to be quite useful to the ... well last mission/ending of the movie.
Maybe in a different universe, there are better plotlines ... but we do live here ... so let's make do with what we get ... and not overthink it. Good soundtrack, almost makes you forget about the cliches.
One for the Road (2023)
Realty check
As with most if not all addictions, the one(s) that are affected by it, can't see it. So no pun intended here as always. And the movie kind of makes it clear from the start. They even talk and tell our main character what he likely is thinking. It does not register with him - at least not to the degree that it would help him or make him change anything.
Lau is a great actor, he really gives it his all. The story is predictable, but you hang on, because you are mesmerized by the performances - that includes the other players (Tschirner to name just one). Cliches and suspension of disbelief go hand in hand - or should go that is.
One for .. home viewing! Best watched sober ...
Finale (2018)
Final(e) word
No pun intended - you have to dig horror movies to be able to enjoy this. You may have heard of torture porn - I would not say that it stoops that low (or high, depending on your own sets of values of course) ... but it is a slasher movie, it does have girls in the main roles that could be considered Scream Queens ... and it has quite a lot of violence in it.
The effects are quite nice, the acting is decent enough too. Story wise not too many surprises .. the editing is ... well interesting. It may throw some people off, you have to pay attention that is for sure. If that sounds like something you want to give a go ... go ahead. Just be sure to cut this some slack ... and suspend your disbelief.
Blindspot (2015)
Tattoo break
As in Prison Break you say? Don't spoil my no pun intended summary line ... what do you mean I did that myself? Well you are probably right. I may have been spoiled by other shows that have higher stakes and have done what this does ... you could compare it to ... 24 a bit! You may have thought I'd go for Prison Break here, but I don't think there is much to that (apart from the Tattoo idea - which ... I mean you can do one season, but even that is quite a stretch).
The show really tries to up the ante, to get you hooked. There are interesting story choices and I really like the actors. Of course in season 5 the latest ... even they are not able to save this (no pun intended - at least story wise ... this really lost it by that point).
If you disagree and thought this is great from start to finish, I am really happy for you. But the storylines, the weird walking the line between humor and drama, the weak twists ... all in the latter seasons as already said ... but I am not rating the first season or seasons for that matter. This is supposed to give you the whole picture.
It may not hit the spot entirely, but it also isn't as blind as some may think it is ... and with that and a congrats for being able to make 100 episodes I bid you farewell.
Yuk po tuen II: Yuk lui sam ging (1996)
Keeps getting harder
I have not seen the first one, actually my first of those movies was the I think fourth part in the series (in 3D) ... which was mad fun. You can not be sensitive or easily offended of course, but the title should have been an indication of that already. Just saying - but back to my summary line: no pun intended as you can hopefully understand.
And while you should know what to expect (not so much Zen, a lot of Sex though), there are scenes or at least one, that is quite cringe. It is one thing to talk about stuff (that are quite discriminating) and another showing them. For our ruler here, no does not mean no - so you can guess where this is heading. Actually the movie is telling is from the start - and I think does reference the first movie (there was something outrageous in the first one if I am not mistaken and it gets referenced here) ... whatever the case, we are being informed that some men, do not care about rights and view women as objects.
According to imdb, Shu Qi (multiple ways to write her name) had another movie under her belt before this ... but this was her breakthrough ... and she bared it all (sorry, but it was too easy - like her character ... although not really of course). This goes from ridiculous to horrific in an instance. While also delivering some "hot" moments. And while these moments are never explicit, they do seem to use ... items to make it look (and feel?) real. Best example is the oral pleasure scene at (under) the table ... sneaky and fun ... or boring maybe for some. But the woman clearly has something in her mouth - and I am quite certain it is not something that is attached to the male individual - I am trying to put it as mildly as I can ... which is hard, to circle back to my first pun.
This mixes a lot of things - be it movie tropes and genres and the characters and the story itself. Again no clue what the first movie did, but it is not like you have the same characters here. This is a new story. Accept it for what it is - lay back and let it .. well ride you! It's not that hard (well ... come on, you know I had to)
Schwarze Milch (2020)
Going back to where you came from
No pun intended - obviously I do not mean what some are saying and meaning when they use that phrase. In this case, our main character does go back to her "home", to her sister. I had no idea what this was and I was surprised at the German I was hearing at the start, including one major independent actor (also can be called a star) ... but it makes sense since this got a lot of funding from Germany.
An interesting drama - but you have to dig the slow pace. And the quite predictable plot from a certain point forward. There is only so many turns you can take when you go to a specific place (physically and mentally that is) ... it will do great with certain people and others will think this is annoying and boring ... which side will you be on?
Master Gardener (2022)
Taking care of her Garden
Oh boy - I might get myself into trouble with this innuendo. So let's go with my usual no pun intended. Love is in the air - air that is produced in the garden by the flowers ... well you can't blame Sigourneys character for feeling the way she does. On the other hand, good personnel is hard to get (though easy to get hard ... no wait that's actually not really what happens here) ... so you got to be careful how you handle them.
And how you feel about them . Professional behavior would be best. For all parties involved. Very good acting as expected - kind of "normal", which may be surprising for some considering Paul Schrader was at the helm here. But I reckon one can shock, by not shocking ... well not too much, of course there are some twists here too. Master director and screenwriter? Well you'll be the judge of that ... certainly very well done! Even if we can't smell it - and no I do not want a Garden now ...
Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult (2024)
Family issues
No pun intended - I had no idea what this was about. But when I started watching this ... I quite surprised to see one dancer I had seen quite a lot of videos of. And she always seemed so happy and light and as if she had fun. I reckon she was more or less. Who did not have have fun? Well her family that is - her sister with whom she started this journey ... well she had a lot to say.
People who are in a cult, seldomly can see that they are. They need others to be rescued by this. Is this something you can attribute to her and her "savior"? I see some saying she is an adult, she should be able to do what she wants to do ... so I will leave this up to you to decide if you think the family has gone over board ... think about this: if this was your sister, your family ... what would you do? And accordingly act of course ... I reckon that will inform how you feel about this documentary show ... which is very well researched and done ... life is supposed to be tough anyway ... don't let it break you ... unless it is break dancing (sorry I can't stop with my silly attitude)
Um Ano Inesquecível: Verão (2023)
Best summer ever (?)
No pun intended - after starting the movie, I actually checked the title and found out they have done one for almost every season of the year. Seems to be different stories though and different actors, so nothing I have to check out - to get a full picture about this one. And I am quite content on skipping on the other movies.
I have seen worse movies mind you and you might feel this is quite good. Which I would applaud and be really happy for you. I see one user with a 10 rating - but I have to keep it real for the majority. I doubt this will make many top 10 lists .. of the year! Never mind of all time.
Nice story and decent acting overall.
Die Hart: Die Harter (2024)
Short of ...
Sorry I know this may feel like a way too easy pun (even more so when I claim no pun intended) ... but it really works in more ways than calling Kevin Hart small (and he makes fun of his size himself - no one hurt then) ... even Nathalie Emanuelles hair is short for example. She likes it that way - and we like her either way (just me? I doubt it).
The best thing about this is the title. If it wasn't clear enough with the first movie: Die Hard is quite the word pun to riff on. Kudos for that - this may be the best joke -not too difficult to achieve when the rest is plain silly. Kevin Hart still has not learned his lesson - after what he had to go through in the first movie it is quite surprising ... but hey, he needed another action movie vehicle, but did not to make it too apparent .. I reckon. Whatever the case, new faces fill in the holes left from those not returning from the first one ... you either love him with all your .. Hart ... or you don't.
Die Hart (2023)
Funny how?
No pun intended - just the other day I was talking with a friend and we thought "any movie that has a variant, an idea of a famous person/actor in it, is good ... well at least the ones we watched, right?" ... and it was right up to that moment. We were talking about Nic Cage playing Nic Cage (well a version of himself) and certainly John Malkovich ... even JCVD (or Jean Claude van Damme for you) is just amazing.
Well this movie is anything but ... but instead of going low (I would have given this a solid 6 to be honest), I thought ... well this has Nathalie Emmanuel in it ... so I'll go high(er) than that. I hope you can bear with me. And the movie is kind of fun - it may have certain people and call certain people by their rightful name ... and then it has John Travolta ... being someone else than himself. Well character name wise ... he could be as crazy in real life, right? I am just kidding of course ... good performance by him too.
Still way over the top - you have to dig it, to love it. Talking of loving it - where was the Rock? All that name calling, but no dice? Would have been fun - on the other hand, he would have stolen the sunshine from all others involved I reckon ... well there is the sequel so ... maybe there? (no is the answer in case you don't want to check for him there)
Robots (2023)
Once more with a feeling
Or no feelings? Can robots feel anything? Well probably not yet or at this moment of time, so no pun intended. The movie starts off with a riff on President Trump - hey don't hate or love me because of the choice of the movie. It does not say it is him, but it is more than crystal clear.
Not sure why it chose to do so - or if you feel it does have much of an impact on the movie (yes there is the end, but ... this could have been handled differently for sure) ... whatever the case, I can't be mad at the movie that has Ms Woodley starring in it. Well I sort of can I suppose, but not in this case. I am not heartless - well certainly not like some are in this movie - see title for a hint.
That all said, the movie is quite funny and has some interesting ideas ... I reckon there is some social commentary too - if you really look for it and care ... fun and light ... if this floats your boat (over the border)
Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism (2023)
God has left ... the chat or building
Maybe even both - so no pun intended. Of course any movie that has Exorcism in the title has already a problem with most horror fans. I do not really have to say it, but there is only one definitive Exorcism movie. Of course that doesn't mean there can't be others (this is not Highlander after all) ... that are at least good or decent. I have seen a few of them.
I actually like the main actor in this ... and the movie may be able to shock you in the right places with the right tone. The effects are good and the story is well told. Exorcism is something that in real life world .. can really go sideways (or to hell I reckon) ... and not in a good way (if there ever was one) ... so no pun intended ... see you at the gate of hell? Well I'll try to stay out of it ...
Who Invited Them (2022)
Welcome to the neighborhood
No pun intended - the movie is quite predictable. Starting from the title of course - but even within the movie. Let's just say that one of the biggest twists ... well I would be very surprised if you do not see that the moment they talk about it. It's a "who is it?" - well how about this story and you will know for certain.
That all said, the actors do have fun - and while it seems a bit odd that we do cut back and forth to a different character - she seems to have a certain impact in the end ... or does she? Well the movie is "fun", even at times when you may or may not curse at our main characters.
In the end, I am not entirely sure, if the movie tries to be way more clever than it has any right to be ... what is the movie (and the characters) trying to tell us? I really don't know - and I don't fully buy what some people explain online ...
May December (2023)
No time to lose
Seasons don't matter, lost years should. So no pun intended. I had no idea what I was finally able to watch (cinema release in Germany last weekend). But I was not disappointed at all! I kind of could have guessed what the acting power would do for the movie - but the story (which kind of feels like it is based on a true story, if not than certainly has taken notes on similar cases) ... well the story is quite twisted.
If like me you don't know and want to dive in blindly - I can only recommend to do it that way. If you like social drama, if you like commentary on society ... well you are in good hands here. Which cannot entirely be said about some of the main characters.
The movie is subtle - you usually need a villain and a someone good - the lines are blurred. What we do have however are a lot of victims .. a lot of people that are hurt. Julianne Moore (and her character voice) - out of this world. As is the performance by her peer Natalie Portman - emotionally open and vulnerable, but also physically in one scene (that camera angle).
Both have issues mentally speaking - so depending on your own morals and viewpoints, you may favor one over the other ... while they are not able to see their own flaws. Their "fights", their dismissal of the other person is really a slow burn process. You have to be patient - and even knowing what Portman wants (her character) ... it does not make her final intrusion less shocking.
Will the beautiful butterfly be free to fly away? Can it finally get out of its shell/cocoon? With this comparison, with this one small animal (wouldn't call it a pet, that's a different story) ... there is more to it. Again so many symbolic things ... Moore and her drive to hunt ... it is her nature, isn't it? So many things you can deduct, can take apart and connect to each other. The movie is quite clever - maybe too clever for its own good. Too slow for some. But that is ok - as long as you can dig it, that's what counts.
Somewhere Between (2017)
Nowhere to be found
This was an easy one - still I'll go with no pun intended when it comes to my summary headline - as I always do of course. The show has quite the interesting core premise ... it reminds me of other shows, where someone was trying to decipher how to prevent something (or some things) from happening.
Now I have to confess: I am in love with Paula Patton ... as crazy as she "seems" especially in episode 2 - I'd stick with her and would try everything to help her. Add to that JR Bourne, who I knew from other stuff, but is quite front and center here ... also Devon Sawa! Who I came to admire in Final Destination and Idle Hands. A shame he is not the face of more stuff - I do believe he is a good actor to say the least.
So on the acting front you have quite a few winners here. Which helps a lot - because you have quite the ... over the top story and twists. There is almost no time to get some air - you could start question some of the things that happen (or happened in episode 1, that kickstarted everything) ... but you would rob yourself of quite some fun and excitement you could have! Suspend your disbelief ... and just go with the flow.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
Mad without Max
Not entirely true (no pun intended), but you understand what I am trying to do and say here. This plays in the Mad Max universe and world, but tells us the story of Furiosa ... and we do get to see scenes from Mad Max Fury Road during the end credits.
I understand if some people feel we already had a Furiosa movie - with Fury Road. But I think it was more than worth it to have this origin story. Especially with Anya Taylor Joy in the lead ... and Chris Hemsworth being her nemesis. Whom I kind of didn't recognize in the trailers ... the prosthetics team did quite the job on him.
And he goes as over the top as he is allowed to. And then some - Miller who is quite old, does not seem to think about retiring .. I would not be surprised if he does another one ... I actually would love it if he did ... cinematography is just off this planet ... this looks amazing. And while it does not have too many action scenes (in my book), the ones it does have are long and glorious. Imax does help too - the rest of the cast and the story is a bit of secondary. Just go with the flow - quite a bit of violence by the way.
Chris is quite the revelation here too. The first chapter (or is it first two?), feels a bit underwhelming, considering I was expecting way more Furiosa at that point ... but it does make sense with the overall story arc! Really well told and even better showcased ... not for the faint of heart ... but anyone who loves cinema and Science Fiction - well there is no way around this! Another pun? Well Miller was able to make it epic for sure, if you need to ask.
One Day (2024)
Actually multiple days
No pun intended - it is one day over many years/decades. You may have seen the movie (with Anne Hatheway, if not it really is a good movie) or you may have read the book/novel this is based on. Something I haven't done (yet).
So as you can tell, I am not the person to look for comparisons and how does it fair to ... I can't do that. I can tell you however that the show has time to explore and goes a bit deeper than the movie on many subjects. Still I do not think it is way better than the movie. Which to be fair had Anne Hatheway ... I mean it's winning just because of that already (no offense to the main actress in this, she is amazing here too, but anyone would be losing against Anne).
No relationship is perfect, some never really amount to anything. Maybe you chose someone just to be and feel safe ... there is a lot that this unpacks ... and there is a lot of .. well love lost (no pun intended) ... it also does have some steamy/hot scenes ... especially in episode 2. Not much in the nudity department, but I don't think anyone would go into this, with that mindset ... just saying for the few that were unsure.
Well told - and short episodes too. So more than decent, if you are into that kind of drama ...
Emergency (2022)
Qualified
No pun intended - if you are fed up, hearing or in this case watching systemic racism, maybe this movie and its theme is not for you. And I am not accusing you or telling you how to feel. Maybe you are aware of it and just like movies to be an escape and you do not want serious issues in your movies - even more so with some ridiculous twists and turns.
Let's just say that certain things that happen (and how our main character react to them) ... are not the most logical things ... but it is a movie, it is over the top, it is suspension of disbelief. Remember that and you will have a strong finish to something that almost drifts into slapstick at times (the mixture might also be something that does not work for you). As you can see, I thought they did a good job overall. This is flawed mind you ... but the message is there and the friendship and the subtext ... well you can understand and feel the anger that is underneath ... it may not be a red alert emergency ... for you, but for others it is a matter of life and death ...
Bilitis (1977)
Soft to the core
No pun intended - obviously I am talking about the erotic themes of the movie, but you can also tell (quickly) that the movie also does look soft (not sure what filters they used, lighting and all that) ... but it does have quite the dreamy feeling about it - or whatever you would call it.
The intro (credits) already will give you the vibe of the movie. A lot of nudity, coming ... of age story and things of that nature. You cannot be too sensitive about those issues. You can however like what you see I reckon. Some girls looked way too young by the way, fortunately the main characters were played by adult women (way older than I thought they'd be during the shoot of the movie too).
The movie is infamous - and it mostly has to do with the nudity. There are also some scenes that suggest violent acts in bed - you may feel uncomfortable a couple times. Women trying to figure out what they are and how they feel ... being exploited by grown men at times. Is that what you would call cringe nowadays? Just a fair warning for you to know what you will get yourself into ... oh and Emanuelle called ... she wants her chair back (it does seem at that time that chair was quite popular - well it is very similar, might be a different one to be honest)
