Rabbit Hole (2023)
better than I thought...
Enjoyed this show, just found out it is NOT renewed? Well that sux. It was the best script and acting from Keifer for a long time. It certainly had the legs to go one more season. We all seem to like conspiracies, and this show was all that. And a lot better than some off it's contemporaneity's. The twists were every Epp, and kept you guessing. Some answers in the last couple of Epps, but would love to see re-booted for some final answers. What is reality/ what is made up? These themes, and is our reality the real one, or are we insane? When do we know what is real? Or some mental illness? I can see a fan made final Epp explaining all this, and if it is done, please let me know.
9-1-1 (2018)
so bad, its good
Ok, Not my normal high end watching stuff. But despite (or because) of the ridiculous script and plot lines, it is very entertaining. I acttualy do know and work with real EMT and emergency service personnel, and very few of the episodes plots lines make any seance, to even an amateur watcher. That said, it does try to cover some of the emotional issues they deal with daily. Life/ work/ family balance, stress, grief and loss, etc. It is by no means completely realistic, in the Epps, but it does cover the range of issues and emotions of people in that field. And entertaining along the way.
I probably won't ever re-watch, but will keep looking at new Epps.
The Old Man (2022)
Just finished S.02
Ok, was not expecting much. But despite my initial thoughts, OK Wow. Well worth the wait, yes there are gaps in the story that even I couldn't figure out, but the brilliant acting, the actual emotional journey, definitely worth watching it all. Seems there will be a Season 3, and I hope that it answers some plot questions. Some parts seem obvious (spoiler, daughter is not dead yet), but the loyalties, and family connections need to be filled out. I do like the way it try's to avoid party politics (all parties are to blame for failed foreign policy), but instead concentrates on the participants, and how it affects them. Like I said, I wasn't expecting much from this show, but it surprised me, and I have enjoyed.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
latest season better..
Ok, Loved the first season, but kind of went down hill in S 2, on wards. Latest S.04, actuality got better, and was fun to watch again. Always been a huge fan of both Steve Martin, and Martin Short, and this show works well for both of them. This new season, worked well for fans, and newbies. I was always wondering when to give up, but {just) kept me going, and glad got to to see the last few epp's. Well done. The whole poke fun at your work place thing I understood and enjoyed, The Human connection plot line surprisingly worked too. Season 4 is a slow burn, but persevere it will be worth it if you made it this far..
Civil War (2024)
3rd time trying to submite this review
I traveled more than 500km's, to see this film with my youngest son. It did not disappoint. It is NOT an action film, or a war film. It is a work of art. People who saw it, based on the preview clips will be disappointed, or not understand the message.
I wanted to see it based on the writer, but was blown away by the cinematography, and sound. A lot of people will miss-understand most of the subtle messages in this film. I was not sure my son would appreciate it, but he got it the way I did. He is in the military, so it was great to see him get the massage, or the fact that it wasn't a direct one.
Visually, amazing. Emotionally painful. Subtle in showing the odd side of humanity, and it's extremes. Worth seeing more than once, and that is rare these days.
Ted Lasso (2020)
haven't smiled so much in a long time.
I am usually weary of instant popular hits. I had resisted seeing this show for a while, but my friends and relatives kept insisting i should try it.
I finally did, without having even seen a preview.
My cheeks are still hurting from smiling so much.
I am only 4 episodes in, but I have laughed, I have cried
and am so looking forward to watching the rest. I have no love of organized sports, but that isn't what this show is about. It just makes you smile. You cant help being sucked into it. It's not a Disneyland fairy tale, but is so optimistic, yet seems real, that you want to believe in the characters & story. I am hooked, and normally a skeptic
I give this a fully thought out 9/10..
Line of Duty: Episode #6.7 (2021)
WHY!!!
One of my absolute favorite shows, how did they wreck this ending so badly? All the build up, to fizzle out without even a whimper. Very unhappy with this episode, I can only hope that they make the next season quickly, and properly, or it will all be tainted by this last terrible one.
Vigil (2021)
Definately fiction, but enjoyable
As an amateur navy buff, there are too many mistakes to mention in regards to the on board submarine sets, & navy protocols & procedures.
However, this is a crime fiction drama, and holds your interest, if you can ignore some of (the very obvious) flaws. The acting is good, despite some poor scripting. The sub plots and back story seems to now hold more interest to me than the main plot. Maybe the ending will surprise?
That said, when was the last time you saw a show, or movie on a submarine?
There could have been much better research done, and more thought put into the sets, and navy procedures and protocols, but at its heart it is a crime drama, not a documentary. I will keep watching, as what else is there to?
Upright (2019)
best new aussie TV in ages.
I was surprised at the overall rating this show scored, till I read all the reviews on IMDB. It seems it scored 9-10/10 for 95% of reviewers, but some decided to give it a 01/10, maybe to deliberately drop its rating? To be honest, I have never seen anything that could deserve a score that low. Even the worst, pulp daytime TV soaps, score more than that, if only for the effort of making them.
I can understand if you were expecting an action thriller, or heist movie, you may be disappointed that it wasn't that, but for what it was, and what it aimed for it was truly brilliant.
To say that a romantic comedy lacked action sequences, and is there for bad, is ridiculous. To the Ray Donovan fans, IT IS NOT that genre of show, get over it.
This is an emotional road journey, that is very Australian in it's telling. Yes there are some cliche's, but anyone who has done a road journey across the country will know that there are really characters like that out there.
The very honest, uncut emotion and feeling this show brings is refreshing, as is the scenery, cinematography and sound track. The characters are flawed, but the journey that take you on, only makes you feel for them despite that. The acting is brilliant, the chemistry between Lucky and Meg is complex, and evoking. This is a show that will make you laugh, make you cry, and at times make you cringe. But is SO WORTH the trip. Best new Australian show in ages. well done.
La vie d'Adèle (2013)
awesome love story
I found this a wonderful, realistic love story. You can remove the sex scenes (if you want), and it still remains a powerful, wonderful love story. The camera work, works, the actress' deliver. The hype about the lesbian sex ( though titillating) doesn't matter, it works as a great coming of age love story that doesn't hide the hard truth about it. I can not believe it isn't nominated for best foreign film. By far the best love story I have seen this decade. Some of the sex scenes seem a bit put on, which is in stark contrast to how real the longing, lustfull scenes are realistic. If this film doesn't take you back to your first real "love" & confusion about it, whether your straight, gay, bi , or whatever; then you don't have a pulse.
Bron/Broen (2011)
excellent! Awesome, complex drama.
To sum up in short: suspense, good acting, real empathy for the story line, great appropriate music, twists that keep you hooked wanting to keep going. The two leads are very different, and equally interesting and complex. The support cast is first rate, and the suspense just keeps building.Best drama/ mystery that I've seen for ages. Well worth it. By epp2 I was pleasantly surprised that it kept the intrigue up. By Epp3 I was thinking of ringing in sick for work to keep watching. If you like your mysteries to keep surprising you, and adding layers, and layers, then this is for you. There aren't the usual "holywood" dumbed down explanations at the end of each epp, instead it makes you keep thinking.I have to say that they have done a first rate job with the music score too.Although even without it, the storyline gives you plenty of emotional reaction. This is one show to set aside free time for, with out distractions. And just enjoy.
