Anyone in the service/hospitality industry would appreciate the employee/employer dynamics
Ed-Shullivan10 July 2019
After watching the first five (5) episodes of Grand Hotel Mrs. Shullivan and I believe there are a sufficient number of plots, sub-plots, family and industry dynamics to keep this series going strong for quite a few seasons. Although the pilot episode leaves the audience with the impression that this may just be another stupid soap opera mystery, my advice would be to hang in there and watch a few more episodes to see so many of the actors/actresses characters and friendships evolve into many intriguing story lines.
Demián Bichir and Roselyn Sanchez nail it as Mr. and Mrs.Mendoza, the owners and hands-on operators of the Miami, Florida, Grand Hotel. As this is each of their second marriages they live in their hotel along with their mixed family of three (3) adult daughters and one (1) son.
The series has quickly evolved into a character driven series and less of a mystery. Mrs. Shullivan and I are glad we hung in there, just like many employees in the service and hotel industry have to to survive.
I'm rating the series a 7 out of 10 and I am optimistic my rating will improve just as the series is getting stronger with each episode. A season 2 is almost a sure thing!

Nice-looking cast

First the positive: the cast is beautiful. The story is as you'd expect- fun summer fare. Time will tell how frothy the story will get. So far, so good.
Now, the bad: the acting by some of the younger actors is just plain bad...or over the top. It's difficult to watch at times.
Final decision: I'll give it a few more episodes to see where it goes.

Warning: Spoilers
The Grand Riviera Hotel is one of the last family-owned hotel on Miami Beach run by Santiago Mendoza (Demián Bichir). During a hurricane, line chef Sky Garibaldi disappears under suspicious circumstance. Santiago announces the sale of the hotel turning it into condos. Gigi is his second wife. Alicia and Javi are his children from his first wife. Carolina and Yoli are his step-daughters. Helen Parker is the long-time hotel manager. The maid Ingrid is pretending to be pregnant with Javi's baby when in fact, it's the sleazy hotel concierge Mateo. New waiter Danny is secretly the brother of the missing Sky investigating her disappearance. He befriends Helen's son Jason.
This has sexy, sexy people. It's got a compelling enough mystery. There is a good family soap opera. I know it's only a summer replacement network show but it's good. It's not breaking any new grounds but it deserves more than 13 episodes. The only big problem is the reveal of Sky's disappearance. After all the red herrings, it's a rather flat reveal. It also gets too messy with Jason. It's like the show knew it was in trouble and started throwing more and more twists to gin up the excitement in the later episodes. Quite frankly, it should stay with the Katey Sagal character until a cliff-hanger ending. The plot twists sped up too much towards the end. Nevertheless, it's too bad that it couldn't find a bigger audience.

Started off a little typical and cliched, but...

Started off a little typical and cliched, but things are getting pretty interesting episode 5 and on.
Good directing, writing is getting better, great casting and performances and certainly a realistic look into this industry.
Enjoyable and the drama is getting better. 8/10 from me.
EDIT: 8/26/19 Oh man this last episode! I have to say the writers really upped the ante these last bunch of episodes! They successfully managed to add so much great drama and tension per episode, I am officially hooked! Katey Sagal was a great addition to the series. I've upped my rating to a 9/10! Mad props to the writers, can't wait to see what else they come up with!

Not what I expected or wanted

I was hoping this show would be a modern glitzy update of Love Boat or the 1980's Hotel. I would like to see fabulous guest stars each week and sub plots about those fabulous guests, all resolved within the hour and then onto the next week with a new story. Instead this is a night time soap opera with pretty people and focused on the workers at the hotel and, more specifically, the butts and chests of those workers. Still, I must keep watching to find out the answer to the mystery about the girl.
Bad soap opera

RENEW! RENEW! RENEW!

I wasn't expecting much from this show, hence why I didn't watch it as soon as it came out. But I'm so glad I finally watched it. Absolutely amazing show. Full of drama, twists and turns. This is edge of your seat stuff. If it's not renewed for season 2, I'm gonna make a fuss.
Don't do it please

Hotel Grand needs to have a second season.
deborah_harries7 September 2019
I am intrigued by this story line. Amazing acting. Please continue this show. All the tv shows now are about cops, army, marines, crime. This is an excellent family show. It's different and I can't wait for the next episode. Please continue on. Maybe the day and time should be earlier.
Please don't cancel

Edit: Damn, after seeing S01E12 I have to update this to 9 stars. Very captivating storytelling at a good pace with astonishing reveals.
My wife first convinced me to watch it with her. I was hesitant at first, but I really like Roselyn Sanchez so I gave it a shot. The sheer beauty of some of the female cast members glued my eyes further to the screen. But the story got me really hooked. The good ol who did it theme. But that quickly evolved into a more character driven show, which I really like. I normally wouldn't like a show like this, but this one got me

Not Going to Last

It sounds like the source material, Gran Hotel, is better. If I knew Spanish I'd probably give that try. This show is too "soap opera-ish" and cliche for my taste. It doesn't feel like a show that will be around past one season.
entertaining

I waited to give this a chance and glad I did. It keeps many storylines going at the same time all revolved around the main one of Sky. I do hope they resolve the storyline in case it gets canceled.
The actors are mainly unknown, but they do a really good job.
I wish they would have kept more of the Finn storyline.
