It’s taken a while for Glen Powell to truly step into the spotlight. After popping up in the likes of Hidden Figures, Set It Up and Everybody Wants Some!! (the last his first collaboration with Richard Linklater), it was 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick that saw him really take flight, giving an unforgettably hissable-yet-heroic performance as Lt Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin. Major turns have come since — box-office-busting romcom Anyone But You and another aviation adventure, Devotion — but it is with Hit Man that Powell announces himself as a movie star and a filmmaking force to be reckoned with.
Inspired by the true story of teacher-turned-pretend-assassin Gary Johnson (as reported by journalist Skip Hollandsworth in a 2001 article for Texas Monthly), Hit Man sees Powell re-team with Linklater, this time on a deeper creative level as co-writer. It takes the real-life nugget of Gary’s unusual side-hustle and expands it into a tale of murder,...

Glen Powell is acing at his fame game of winning hearts over quite spectacularly, considering how he has not only won fans over from all around the globe but even has his co-stars enchanted by his charmingly alluring personality. He can create chemistry with just anyone thanks to his remarkable acting chops, and Adria Arjona’s statement about him stands as proof of the same.

This happened recently at a very special event that honored Powell with a Hall of Famer position, where his Hit Man co-star Arjona was present as well. Not only did the 32-year-old Puerto Rican actress have a ton of praises to heave her co-star and on-screen love interest with, but she even went so far as to claim that this wasn’t his summer, but rather, it was his decade.

Glen Powell remained the king of grassroots publicity at an Austin, Texas, screening of his new Netflix movie, Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man.” The leading man hit the red carpet at the event accompanied by his family, but his mother and father decided to troll their son with signs directed at the press line that read: “Stop trying to make Glen Powell happen” and “It’s never gonna happen.”
It appears Powell’s parents have been paying attention to all the press attention their son has been getting over the last few years. Every time Powell appears in a movie, be it Netflix’s “Set It Up” or Tom Cruise’s blockbuster “Top: Gun Maverick” or Sony’s rom-com “Anyone But You” with Sydney Sweeney, the press can’t help but say he’s got bona fide star power and is the next big thing. A certain actor has been taking over Hollywood as of late, and his name is Glen Powell.
The actor, hailing from Austin, Texas, has a long list of credits to his name, with various appearances on television series over the years. But, he reached movie star status after starring in two of the biggest films of the last two years.
Both Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone but You were bonafide commercial hits, but they are far from the only series and movies of Mr. Powell's you'll want to add to your must-watch list.
Powell's acting career started with a small role in Spy Kids 3-D Game, and a few years later, he went on to star in The Great Debaters alongside Hollywood heavy hitters Forest Whitaker and Denzel Washington, who also directed it.
More roles would follow that, including guest stints on CSI: Miami, Rizzoli & Isles, and NCIS.

Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney brought their charms together in the 2023 rom-com blockbuster, Anyone But You. The project ended up becoming a hot topic thanks to their savvy marketing and the leads’ electrifying chemistry. It is considered a sleeper hit, breaking box-office records, which is uncommon in the genre.

Slice yourself a healthy serving of pie and get ready to go undercover. Richard Linklater’s comedy Hit Man is coming to Netflix, and you can see the brand-new trailer above. “Who is your hit man?” the trailer asks. Time to find out.
Co-written by and starring Glen Powell, Hit Man belongs to a bundle of genres: noir, screwball comedy, thriller. But at heart, Linklater told Netflix, it’s very simple: “Ultimately, it’s a relationship movie.” The sparks between fake hit man Gary Johnson (Powell) and prospective client Madison (Adria Arjona) fly immediately — until layers upon layers of deceit turn their budding romance upside down.
Read on for your top-secret briefing on the story of Hit Man.

The ultra-charming and very handsome actor Glen Powell is having quite a run right now, but my dude is far from an overnight success. His first role was as "Long-fingered Boy" in Robert Rodriguez's "Spy Kids 3" more than 20 years ago, and since then, he's been steadily building his way to stardom. Small roles in "The Great Debaters," "The Dark Knight Rises," and "The Expendables 3" laid the groundwork for his star-making, charisma-filled performance in 2016's "Everybody Wants Some!!" In 2018, he helped resurrect the rom-com with the one-two punch of Netflix films "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" (a delightful and underrated gem) and the more popular "Set It Up" opposite Zoey Deutch, which launched him to Internet Boyfriend status.

Glen Powell is slowly becoming an interesting actor with the choice of films he is participating in. While he has played pivotal parts in acclaimed films like Everybody Wants Some!!, and Hidden Figures in the 2010s, he became a sensation as Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick. He followed the huge success of that film with the rom-com Anyone But You.

Powell’s sizzling chemistry with Sydney Sweeney was the highlight of the film and audiences throned to theatres to watch the film. The film became a huge hit, signaling the renaissance of rom-coms and audiences’ desire to watch them in theaters. However, some audiences are not impressed with Powell and the present style of rom-coms that are coming out.

Before he was stealing hearts in Set it Up and Anyone But You, flying planes in Top Gun: Maverick, and chasing tornadoes in Twisters, Glen Powell played frat boy Chad Radwell in the Ryan Murphy drama Scream Queens. This short-lived series may have fizzled out with little fanfare in its second and final season, but for many (myself included), this is the project that first put Powell and his charming humor on our radar.
Scream Queens is a slasher comedy, set at the fictional Wallace University in season 1 and the C.U.R.E. Institute medical school in season 2, that follows the girls of the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority as they try to stay alive in the midst of a killing spree. The popular girls known as the Chanels are the killer’s primary targets, but the killer isn’t afraid to take the frat boys of the Dickie Dollar Scholars down a peg either.

For countless fans of the romantic comedy, Hugh Grant will always be just a boy standing in front of a girl. But speaking with IndieWire for his single-episode guest appearance as Ed Keplinger in HBO’s “The Regime,” the 63-year-old British actor seemed blissfully out of touch with the genre that launched his stardom.
When asked about Hollywood’s rom-com resurgence, Grant said, “I didn’t know there was one. What should I watch?”
Since the summer that brought us “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” movies about meet-cutes and star-crossed lovers have strengthened their foothold in streaming while taking leaps forward at the box office. IndieWire suggested Grant try anything with Glen Powell, a standout rom-com stud also known for “Top Gun: Maverick” who has been described as this generation’s Grant on occasion.

Everybody has goals. For new resident Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig), hers is to enter the world of Palm Beach high society circa 1969. Gina Rodriguez brings the charm as a sports fanatic dating in Brooklyn in an improvement on streaming romcom fare
Ever since Netflix declared the return of the moribund studio romcom with its “Summer of Love” in 2018, the company has churned out a steady stream of formulaic – or, to quote the burn in many a review, “algorithmic” – at-home fare. The genre didn’t so much reboot as mutate for a new streaming home with a now distinctive style: baseline watchable, sheen-y, disposable. I’ve reviewed probably a dozen of them and can only recall a handful. The few that have stuck – To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Set It Up – have endured in large part because of its stars’ charisma, without which a romcom has little hope. Such was the case with 2019’s Someone Great, a middling movie elevated to memorable by the breezy charm of Gina Rodriguez.

Peacock is ready to get Laid.
The NBCUniversal-backed streamer has handed out a straight-to-series order for Laid, a comedy starring Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and from writers Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna.
Khan (Young Rock, Always Be My Maybe) and McKenna (Son of Zorn) are writing and exec producing the series for Universal Television, where the former’s Fierce Baby is based with an overall deal.
Laid revolves around a woman who finds out that her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go back through her “sex timeline” to confront her past in order to move forward. Peacock says Laid is a “f—ked up rom-com where the answer to ‘Why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?’ is a resounding ‘Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you.’”

“Anyone But You” star Glen Powell says his upcoming film “Twisters” is “definitely not a reboot.”
The upcoming sequel leans more toward an update of the original version with a brand new plot. Powell, who has racked up roles in rom-coms (“Set It Up”) and action films like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Devotion” will lead the Universal movie alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones. Though production on the disaster epic paused due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023, the film remains on track for its 2024 release date.
“We just wrapped it a couple nights ago. It’s definitely not a reboot. We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story,” Powell told Vogue for a profile piece. “There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.

Glen Powell is only 35 years old, but he’s been around the movie business since he was 10, with his first credit coming as a 14-year-old in “Spy Kids 3D: Game Over” as Long-Fingered Boy. That means, even though he’s only been a part of Hollywood’s A-List for the past few years, he has a much longer filmography to his name — and he’s confident in naming his favorite film experience to date. No, it’s not playing Long-Fingered Boy.

When Glen Powell signed on to star in Anyone But You alongside Sydney Sweeney, he was more than ready to fulfill the classic romantic-comedy tropes: a few steamy love scenes, some silly and borderline cheesy dialogue, and, of course, plenty of shirtless beach shots. So imagine his surprise when he also found himself dangling from a broken-down helicopter flying above shark-infested waters while filming in Australia’s Sydney Harbour. “The helicopter had serious mechanical issues, and we had to emergency land in a field nearby. If we crashed, we would’ve been history.

Having just returned from TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), I can say that without a doubt, one of the most liked movies at the fest this year was Richard Linklater’s Hit Man. You can read my review here, but the movie features a terrific breakout performance by star Glen Powell, who plays a mild-mannered professor who moonlights as an undercover agent for the police, where he poses as a fictional hitman. Things get complicated when he falls in love with one of the people he’s supposed to set up – as played by an impossibly sexy Adria Arjona.
Given how popular the movie was, it’s no surprise that Netflix has snapped it up in their second significant acquisition of the festival. Last week, they bought Anna Kendrick’s Woman of the Hour for $11 million, and Hit Man carries a steep $20 million price tag. A theatrical component has been worked in for the movie,...

Sydney Sweeney is in her letting-loose era.
The “Euphoria” and “White Lotus” Emmy nominee told IndieWire that upcoming rom-com “Anyone but You” unlocked a new level of comedy in her career. Honestly, it's kind of hard to believe that it's only been 25 years since the R-rated romantic comedy "There's Something About Mary" ranked among the top five-grossing films of 1998. If you're a millennial or older, that probably feels like an actual lifetime ago. Meanwhile, the vast majority of Gen-Zers weren't even alive to be scandalized by Ben Stiller's "hair gel" in the Farrelly brothers' massively popular raunchfest.
Recent movies like "Blockers," "Good Boys," and "Booksmart" have done a fine job of keeping that film's mix of sweetness and debauchery going. Thankfully, they've also moved away from the misogyny, homophobia, and dubious handling of consent that too often marred otherwise enjoyable older entries in the bawdy comedy tradition. However, compared to the heyday of R-rated rom-coms and comedies in general that came after "Mary" — when the likes of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Wedding Crashers," and "Knocked Up" reigned triumphant at the box...

Collette is playing the prosecutor, while Deutch will play Hoult’s wife.

With the exit of long-tenured film executive Lisa Nishimura on Thursday, Netflix has officially entered its austerity age — whatever that may mean for the streaming powerhouse.
Nishimura’s 15 years at the company have spanned the streaming boom, Oscar wins and multiple restructuring efforts. Noted one industry veteran that has long worked with Nishimura, “It’s a signal that the most thoughtful, taste-driven era is being driven out.”
Under film head Scott Stuber, the film division was long bifurcated according to budgets: tentpoles and indies, with the former sitting around the $30 million to $40 million and way upwards, and the latter sitting below that. Former exec Tendo Nagenda, who joined the streamer from the four-quadrant heavy hitter Disney, oversaw films like the Russo brothers’ The Gray Man and the Extraction films, as well as the Knives Out franchise and The Old Guard. Nishimura’s team oversaw, well, most everything else.

In a surprising move, Netflix has parted ways with two longtime film executives, with Lisa Nishimura and Ian Bricke departing the streaming service.
Nishimura, who served as vp independent film and documentary features, handled an array of projects budgeted at $40 million or below, including the Oscar-nominated doc Crip Camp and the western Power of the Dog, which earned Jane Campion a best director Oscar.
The move comes amid a restructuring, with projects under Scott Stuber’s film division now folding all live-action films under Kira Goldberg, Ori Marmur and Niija Kuykendall. Dan Silver oversees documentary, which previously was partially overseen by Nishimura.
“Lisa Nishimura joined Netflix in the DVD days, and as the company moved into streaming, she built our original documentary and stand-up comedy divisions from the ground up, and established Netflix as a powerhouse in both spaces,” said Stuber in a statement. “Her documentary work includes American Factory,...

“Your Place or Mine” is the story of two best friends named Peter and Debbie who slowly come to realize that they are a perfect match. The film, which debuted on Feb. 10, is a bit of a throwback to the glory days of rom-coms, a period in the 1990s and early aughts when Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey and other spunky stars met cute to the delight of moviegoers. And that’s not just in the casting of Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher, veterans of the genre, in the two central roles, or that “Your Place or Mine” was written and directed by Aline Brosh McKenna, who previously penned “27 Dresses” and “The Devil Wears Prada.”

It’s been well over five years since news first broke that Glen Powell was writing a “Captain Planet” movie for Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions. Powell, who was coming off the success of his Netflix rom-com “Set It Up” at the time, described his take on the environmentalist superhero as “subversive and fun and like dark and irreverent.” Half a decade later, Powell is an even bigger star thanks to “Top Gun: Maverick” and still wants to play Captain Planet.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Powell said his “Captain Planet” movie with DiCaprio’s production company is still alive and is just waiting on Warner Bros. and “where all the superhero stuff kind of lands there.”
“I think those conversations will be happening shortly,” Powell noted. “I know DiCaprio is super passionate about it. I’m super passionate about it. I think it could be great…I want that one to work.

Glen Powell may have superpowers after all: He’s hoping to resurrect scrapped superhero movie “Captain Planet,” with Leonardo DiCaprio set to produce.
The “Top Gun: Maverick” actor said that the long-rumored “Captain Planet” movie may have new life thanks to DiCaprio still being “super passionate” about the project. The adaptation of the 1990s cartoon was first announced in 2016, with Powell set to pen the script alongside Jono Matt (“Weird Waters”). Oscar-winner DiCaprio was producing with Jennifer Davisson Killoran.
While Powell noted that the fate of “Captain Planet” ultimately lies in the hands of Warner Bros. Discovery and “where all the superhero stuff kind of lands there,” he added, “I think those conversations will be happening shortly” about officially greenlighting the film.

Producer of “Something From Tiffany’s” Lauren Neustadter credits costars Kendrick Sampson (“Insecure”) and Zoey Deutch, as well as casting director Ronna Kress, with transforming the story of the film, adapted from Melissa Hill’s book that came out over a decade ago.
“I read it when it was in galley [advanced, not finished format] and it’s a delightful book with an A+ movie premise. I immediately gravitated towards the premise of the book,” Neustadter told TheWrap in a recent interview. “I thought the characters were incredibly charming, but it wasn’t the kind of thing where there was a lot of specificity around the roles and the backgrounds of each of the characters. It was written in a bit of a different moment in time, and so we were imagining the script now, and we were imagining making the movie now. It was just something that I think we wanted to make sure that we were incredibly inclusive.

‘Something from Tiffany’s’ Review: A Warm but Weak-Spirited Rom-Com that Isn’t Worthy of Zoey Deutch
Twenty-eight-year-old actress Zoey Deutch was either born at the wrong time to star in romantic comedies, or at the perfect time to redeem them. If only it were both. If only people were still making rom-coms worthy of the light and lovability that Deutch — who previously flirted with the genre in Netflix’s “Set It Up,” between spikier roles in the likes of “Everybody Wants Some!!” and “Not Okay” — is more capable of bringing to them than just about anyone this side of Meg Ryan.
But they’re not, and nowhere is that more obvious than in like “Something from Tiffany’s,” which gives Deutch a chance to shine at full-wattage during a movie that can hardly muster the energy to power a string of Christmas lights. I guess it’s fitting that her character is more of a Hanukkah kind of girl, because the fire she brings to the role...

Based on the novel of the same name by Grant Ginder, director Clare Scanlon (“Set It Up”) returns to the world of romantic comedies with the charmless, vaguely holiday-set “The People We Hate at the Wedding”. Adapted by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, there is little here to recommend in a film that once upon a time would have been destined for the bargain bin.

No joke: Claire Scanlon knows what’s funny. The seasoned comedy director and editor has helmed episodes of everything from “The Good Place” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” to “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Bless This Mess.” She produced “Last Comic Standing.” She edited “American Masters” episodes about Bob Newhart and Carol Burnett.
And she, in no small part, helped herald the re-emergence of the rom-com thanks to her 2018 smash Netflix film “Set It Up.”
Ever-busy (the director generously Zoomed with IndieWire from the very first day of production on ABC’s new sitcom “Not Dead Yet”), Scanlon is back in the film groove with another streaming feature: Amazon’s ensemble comedy “The People We Hate at the Wedding.” And while she said she was offered “a lot” of rom-coms after the success of “Set It Up,” she’s still working through her feelings on the genre. The term “romantic comedy” these days covers a lot of light entertainments that only notionally meet the genre requirements: They pivot on relationships while just glancing at romance, and are packed with dialogue that’s zappily delivered but not all that funny. “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is one such nonromcom. Sporting a game cast and efficient sitcommy pacing, it looks and sounds the part just enough to keep you diverted — until you notice, as the credits roll to upbeat electropop, that you haven’t laughed once. Starring Kristen Bell, Ben Platt and Allison Janney as the blundering American relatives lowering the tone of a posh English wedding, this straight-to-streaming Amazon release attempts to bring a faintly risqué, expletive-laden millennial sensibility to Nancy Meyers terrain, and never quite finds the sweet spot.

A short, patchy, straight-to-streaming piece of semi-amusing content that tries to fit several different romantic-comedies into a single movie that doesn’t have the bandwidth (or the interest) to mine any of them for major sources of romance or comedy, .
Some of them should be so lucky.
At one point, during what can only be described as the worst bachelorette party ever conceived in movies and/or real life, Kristen Bell is submerged in the River Thames on a crisp fall afternoon while dressed in nothing but an American flag bikini (and that’s before the activity goes wrong). At another, Ben Platt pisses on iconic “No Fear, No Die” star Isaach de Bankolé out of spite, which is not a sentence I ever expected to write.

Weddings are meant to be occasions of joy and unity, celebrations of togetherness and love, where you share in the joy with closest friends and family to create memories that last a lifetime.
But they can sometimes feel like a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner: a frustrating chore you do out of obligation. They can be dull and even infuriating affairs where dysfunctional relationships are the norm, and old grudges, boring conversations, and endless insensitive questions and jokes are the word of the day. And like with Thanksgiving dinner, a wedding always has a group of people that sour the whole thing, becoming the butt of the joke and the stories for weeks after. ‘The People We Hate at the Wedding’ Trailer: Kristen Bell, Ben Platt, and Allison Janney Cause Chaos

“Eloise is our half-sister, which means that we can half-ass the relationship,” Platt says in the trailer, referencing the bride-to-be.
Written by “Bob’s Burgers” sibling scribes Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (“The Great North”) and Wendy Molyneux (“Deadpool 3”), “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is directed by Claire Scanlon, who previously helmed episodes of “The Office” and Netflix rom-com “Set It Up.”
