“Candyman” dominated every platform in its first weekend on premium VOD. Available for $19.99, the Universal horror movie aligned with standard studio strategy to debut on home platforms after its third week of theatrical play. It still ranked #4 in theaters, falling only 26 percent.
Nia DaCosta’s update of the 1993 horror classic displaced the studio’s own “F9” ($19.99), after an expanded edition returned the widely seen sequel to #1 across all charts last week. The worldwide top grossing film of 2021 is now #2 at both Vudu and Google Play, and #3 at iTunes.
The strength of “Candyman” took #1 on Vudu’s full week chart, even though its release covered only three days of Vudu’s listing period. Of the 17 different films on the three VOD charts, 10 are PVOD titles ($19.99 or higher) and fill 23 of the 30 total slots.

This week’s biggest home title doesn’t show on any VOD chart: It’s Marvel’s “Black Widow,” of course, exclusively available on Disney+ for $29.99. About 2 million of the platform’s subscribers paid for it, generating $60 million.
Unlike theater grosses, “Black Widow” PVOD revenues represent a 100 percent return to the studio. Rival studios suggest that the domestic portion ranged between 67-80 percent. On that basis, Disney would have so far earned more from PVOD than in theaters. A single weekend’s performance is not the final word for movies, theaters, or even Disney, but it suggests major implications for all concerned.
Another indication that PVOD remains a lucrative alternative to theaters is the strategy for home availability of “A Quiet Place Part II” which drops Tuesday — as planned, 45 days after its very successful theatrical release — on Paramount+. The VOD charts continue to reflect what may be a cultural trend. Theaters are driven by a very few franchises, while home viewing reflects a broad swath of genres, audiences, and interests — much as the theaters did in the late 20th century.
Theatrical grosses over Independence Day weekend were driven by “F9,” “The Boss Baby: Family Business,” and “The Forever Purge.” Together they grossed $65 million over four days, or 75 percent of the total box office. The revenue generated by streaming is unknown — but charts and tracking services reflect millions of viewers watching Chris Pratt save the world in Amazon’s “The Tomorrow War,” IFC’s comedy-horror adaptation of VR game “Werewolves Within,” and Steven Soderbergh’s small-time ’50s crooks in HBO Max’s “No Sudden Move.” In addition, four different, long-running films are at #1 on different charts.

Exclusive: Luna Blaise (Manifest), Madison Pettis (Five Points), Charlie Gillespie (Julie And The Phantoms), Hart Denton (Riverdale), Greer Grammer (Awkward), Will Peltz (Unfriended), Daniella Perkins (Red Ruby) and Dylan Flashner (Lansky) are among the cast for coming-of-age drama Deltopia, which is currently in production in L.A.
The movie takes place over a period of 24 hours as a group of friends from Southern California finish their last day of high school and travel to Santa Barbara for “Deltopia,” the biggest party of their lives.
The film is loosely based on real events from the actual Deltopia, the annual unsanctioned street party held each spring in Isla Vista, Santa Barbara. In 2014, authorities arrested around 100 party-goers when the large event turned violent after one of the revellers was detained by police.

Composers wear so many hats when composing and depending on what they’re writing for, whether it’s for episodic TV, film, or video games, it can be a juggling act to get the scores and themes just right. These artists painstakingly put care, effort and hours into what music will accompany the visuals on the little or big screen.
Composer Max Aruj is one such musician. Born and raised in Los Angeles, his previous release is Crawl, produced by Sam Raimi, and directed by Alexandre Aja and the video game Assassin’s Creed – Wrath of the Druids. Aruj recently composed the scores for Eytan Rockaway’s Lansky, in theaters, starring Harvey Keitel, and Jonathan Hensleigh’s The Ice Road, on Netflix, starring Liam Neeson, Laurence Fishburne, Amber Midthunder, Benjamin Walker, and Marcus Thomas.
Coincidentally both films were released on the same day, Friday June 25th.

This weekend, the strong $70 million opening for “F9” dominated theatrical box office headlines. Streaming stories lack that clarity; opaque platform reporting makes it impossible for any single title to dominate. However, with fewer films released in theaters — two titles sold 77 percent of this weekend’s tickets — VOD’s diversity may reflect a greater share of the movie business.
This week saw standout performances for “Nobody” (Universal) and “Demon Slayer – Mugen Train” (Funimation) each taking two #1 spots on the four charts we track. Netflix’s $18 million domestic-only deal for Liam Neeson acquisition “The Ice Road” seems to have paid off with a top slot. Totals for Pixar’s “Luca” are unknown, but figure it is strong at Disney+; the studio’s “Cruella” also shows well as a new $29.99 Premium VOD.

With a career spanning six decades and more than 150 credits, Harvey Keitel has made an indelible mark on American cinema and pop culture. Despite material of wildly varying quality, some of it forgettable, Keitel has rarely given a sub-par performance. More often than not, he’s elevated otherwise disposable material. What’s remarkable isn’t Keitel’s longevity (deserved), but the lack of recognition from yearly awards (undeserved), a testament both to Keitel’s understated performance style and awards groups taking Keitel’s perfectly calibrated performances for granted. Look no further for evidence of that proposition than Keitel’s latest, Lansky, a dull, cliche-ridden gangster biopic that suffers badly whenever Keitel is offscreen and his co-leads, Sam Worthington as a down-and-out writer looking for one last, big writing score, and John...

Questlove’s Summer of Soul (Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) will tease the specialty box office this weekend with the brilliantly reviewed Sundance Grand Jury and Audience award-winner in special engagements in two theaters to tee up a wide release on some 600 screens, and Hulu, July 2.
The film from Searchlight Pictures about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, which features never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and others, will strike a chord at the El Capitan Theater in LA and the Magic Johnson AMC Harlem.

“People see the same thing from different perspectives. And that fascinates me,” Harvey Keitel notes in an early scene while playing the title role in “Lansky,” writer-director Eytan Rockaway’s ambitious but uneven biopic about the notorious mobster Meyer Lansky.
It’s tempting to read this snippet of dialogue as Rockaway’s way of acknowledging, right from the start, that his indie drama is yet another interpretation of real-life events previously recounted, with varying degrees of accuracy, in features and TV movies as diverse as “Virginia Hill,” a half-forgotten 1974 TV-movie that marked Joel Schumacher’s debut as writer-director; the 1999 HBO production “Lansky,” starring Richard Dreyfuss and directed by John McNaughton from a script by David Mamet; and Barry Levinson’s “Bugsy” (1991), featuring Ben Kingsley well cast as Meyer Lansky opposite Warren Beatty’s Bugsy Siegel. Truth to tell, however, comparisons to those predecessors don’t always work in Rockaway’s favor.

In his 80 years, Meyer Lansky worked alongside the most notorious gangsters in American history. He spearheaded a worldwide gambling racket and allegedly had quite a few people murdered for getting in the way of his business. Lansky even worked with the U.S. Navy during World War II, protecting the ships in New York Harbor from spies and and sabotage.
No one can deny that Lansky led a fascinating life, even after watching Eytan Rockaway’s tedious biopic “Lansky,” which has more in common with a book report than an actual book. Writer-director Rockaway (“The Abandoned”) hits all the major bullet points in the gangster’s life but ignores almost all the connective tissue that would make this outline of intriguing anecdotes really come alive.
“Lansky” stars Harvey Keitel as the aging mobster, living out his last remaining years in Florida, dying of lung cancer well after the rest of his criminal contemporaries have been buried.

Eytan Rockaway's Lansky is one of those monumental stories that try to cover the whole life of their hero, looking at him from a neutral distance, being somewhere in the middle, so that the viewer can refer to the story himself. It is nostalgia for gangster cinema and ambiguous emotions awakened by the film. This is a story not only about the eponymous character, Meyer Lansky (Harvey Keitel), a mafia boss, one of the legendary American gangsters, founder of the largest organised crime group in the world, the National Crime Syndicate. It is also the story of the crisis of the writer, David Stone (Sam Worthington), who receives from Lansky an offer to write his biography.
David’s creative and family crisis will connect him and Lansky with a bond resembling the relationship between a father and a son. David adopts Lansky as the father figure whom he missed in his life,...

A couple of years ago, we saw Martin Scorsese use cutting-edge CGI techniques to allow for his aging actors to play much younger versions of themselves in the crime drama, “The Irishman.” It’s a neat trick, without a doubt, but in the new crime drama “Lansky,” the film decided to go the old-school way and just cast two great actors for the title role.
