Short Documentary Review: Myanmar Anatomy (2023) by Prapat Jiwarangsan
Yangon Zoological Garden, Yangon Circle Railway and the Drug Elimination Museum are the focal point of this blend of documentary and essay. Jiwarangsan adds accounts of Myanmar activists and their struggle during the coups as well as their conflicts with the authorities which made it necessary for them to flee the country. Also, the images from the three locations are altered, using various illustrations of animals, their anatomy, their muscles and blood circulation, as well as various color filters. The effect is often remindful of a museum installation, but at the same time, especially in combination with the other elements, enlightening for the viewer, give more context to the scenes. My first concert ever was Sarah McLachlan at Radio City Music Hall in 1995. The Canadian singer-songwriter was on tour in support of her U.S. breakthrough, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, and had enlisted a then-unknown artist, Paula Cole, as the opening act despite protests from tour promoters, who claimed nobody would pay to see two women.
Of course, they were mistaken, and a few years later, McLachlan helped reimagine the touring music festival with the all-female Lilith Fair. She continues her mission to share the spotlight with other female artists on her latest trek, in celebration of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy’s 30th anniversary, with fellow Canadian Leslie Feist warming up the audience at the Hollywood Bowl last night as the marine layer rolled in and the temperature dropped.
After opening with a mini-set of popular hits and fan favorites from subsequent releases, McLachlan launched into a track-by-track performance of Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.

Although The Circle brings out some of the worst sides of players, two competitors seemingly are making the odds work for them. Even through the difficult decisions, Myles Reed and Quori-Tyler Bullock (Qt) appear to be watching each other’s backs. While everyone has made strategic moves, these two blooming romantics are sticking together. But do their loyalties extend past the social experiment?
Myles Reed And Quori-Tyler Bullock Are Definitely Cute On-Camera
Since filming the Netflix hit, The Circle, fans now wonder if the on-screen compatible couple has taken the romance off-screen. Undoubtedly, Myles Reed and Quori-Tyler Bullock have chemistry within the show. While they both are playing a tough game, they each have a soft spot for one another. Likewise, their budding relationship came with heart-shaped pancakes delivered straight to Qt’s doorstep. Think about it: Can you name a recent series that gives off Dawson’s Creek, The O.C. or even Pretty Little Liars energy? Shows that offer incredible melodrama, characters you simultaneously love/can’t stand and baffling storytelling choices in a high school setting? Not considering the supernatural ones — if only because their scope tends to reach too far beyond high school — we can count this type of all-engrossing youth drama on one hand. The teen soap output from The CW, Freeform (née ABC Family) and MTV has become all but nonexistent.

Since its formation in 2019, All Elite Wrestling has put an emphasis on in-ring action, creating a much-needed alternative to WWE. Some would even say that there is too much emphasis on the wrestling itself and not enough flashy storytelling. But while the promotion is far from perfect, there are still many great arcs and rivalries that have come from Tony Khan smashing his action figures together.

In this year’s Berlinale Shorts, cinema is distilled to its most essential features. Conventional narratives are very much eschewed in favour of complex ideas, bold left turns and bravura filmmaking gestures. This is my fifth time covering the programme for Directors Notes, and once again I am pleased by the aesthetic unity of the offerings as well as their unorthodox filmmaking techniques. You’d be hard-pressed to find another section at the festival with so much diversity. As usual, there may be some films that I found confounding, odd or interminable, but I can’t accuse them of peddling cliché or well-worn narratives. Most notably, while the feature competition at Berlinale contains no animated movies this year, the Shorts has plenty, putting them on an equal footing with their live-action and documentary counterparts. From the unclassifiable to classical filmmaking, strange 3D models to lo-fi romance, here are ten excellent...

Andrew Keegan was one of the many mid-tier teeny-bopper heartthrobs of the 1990s, with roles in Camp Nowhere, sitcom Thunder Alley and, near the end of his popularity in the decade, a smaller role in 10 Things I Hate About You, not to mention spots on quintessential ‘90s TV like Full House, Step by Step and Boy Meets World. The dude had his fans to be sure, but a cult following is taking it a little too far…

This article contains Squid Game: The Challenge spoilers through episode 9.
Squid Game: The Challenge has been a controversial endeavor for Netflix but it’s hard to argue that it hasn’t been a successful one.
The reality competition series based on the streamer’s iconic 2021 hit Squid Game brings 456 normal people together to engage in physical, mental, and emotional battles of elimination until there’s only one person left standing. Unlike Squid Game before it, The Challenge ditches most of the capitalistic satire that gave the original proceedings real bite. Like Squid Game, however, The Challenge is also a real hoot.
There’s something inherently engaging about watching every day folks play in high stakes children’s games (whether or not those games could actually kill them like in Squid Game or merely eliminate them like in The Challenge). The series has been a mainstay of Netflix’s Top Ten since it premiered on Nov.

Exclusive: The Circle has cemented itself as one of Netflix’s longest-running reality formats with a double series recommission, as filming moved from the UK to Atlanta.
Seasons 6 and 7 of Studio Lambert’s social media-style format were recently shot in the city, with the sixth set to air next spring. The Circle used to be filmed in Manchester.
In The Circle, a number of players move into separate apartments within the same building. Contestants are kept isolated from the outside world and each other and are not allowed to meet or communicate face-to-face, instead speaking via a social media app that gives them the ability to portray themselves in any way they choose. Every few days, contestants are ‘rated’ by the others and the lowest are eliminated.

Post Malone‘s secret to shedding 60 pounds? Cutting out soda, for the most part.
The “Circle” rapper recently appeared on “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast and was showered with compliments from the UFC commentator about his body transformation. Rogan told him right off the bat, “Dude, you look f**king great. I told you that when I saw you but I wanna tell you on-air. You look f**king great, man.”
Malone shared that cutting out soda is what largely contributed to his major body transformation.
“Soda is so bad. It’s so good, but so bad,” he said.
But, like any healthy diet, moderation is the key.
“[If’] I had a great show and I’m feeling a little bit naughty, I’m gonna have myself a Coke on ice,” Malone said.
The “Sunflower” singer — whose real name is Austin Post — said he’s down to 180 pounds after tipping the scales at 240 pounds.

“Full Circle” came to an exceptionally satisfying end July 27, as director Steven Soderbergh and writer Ed Solomon elegantly pulled together the varied storylines and themes that comprised its sprawling, penetrating narrative while leaving just enough unanswered questions to tantalize the viewer. Soderbergh looked back on the making of the Max limited series in a wide-ranging roundtable interview that touched on a number of subjects both directly and indirectly related to “Full Circle,” from why he likes to shoot quickly to what he learned from the New York cop movies of the 1970s. Here are some highlights from the conversation.
On the influence of William Friedkin and Sidney Lumet.
While preparing for “Full Circle,” Soderbergh looked at William Friedkin’s “The French Connection” and Sidney Lumet cop movies like “Serpico.” “There can be something compelling and arresting about an approach that’s really direct and doesn’t have a lot of filigree in it,...

Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Full Circle” Episodes 5 and 6.
An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind — even if it brings things full circle. The final episodes of Max’s “Full Circle” from Steven Soderbergh and Ed Solomon reveal a broken cycle of violence, greed, and secrecy that does not ultimately heal from retaliation, but resolution/healing/absolution.
“Full Circle” stars a large ensemble, but the Mahabir side especially spotlights key players at different times. If Episodes 1 and 2 belonged to Aked (Jharrel Jerome), then 3 and 4 were focused on Louis (Gerald Jones) and 5 and 6 spotlight Xavier (Sheyi Cole). Each member of the young crew tasked with doing Savitri’s (Cch Pounder) bidding experiences degrees of panic, fear, and regret after the kidnapping, the specific cocktail of these determining their actions in the final hours. 3 and 4 depict Louis trying to right his wrongs, to return Nicky...

It’s a good time to be a Steven Soderbergh fan. Last week saw the premiere of his deliciously twisty new crime thriller “Full Circle” on Max, and on July 17, the prolific director dropped a surprise web series, “Command Z,” on his Extension 765 site. The series — split into eight episodes and around an hour and 40 minutes total — is a playful and hilarious satire that sees the director back in his “Schizopolis” mode, with Michael Cera as the AI-generated ghost of an Elon Musk-esque tech guru who implements a plan for select employees to travel back in time and clean up the mess he and other titans of politics and industry made of the world. The series is deadly serious in its substance, reckoning with ambitious ethical and philosophical questions related to mankind’s most self-destructive tendencies, yet the delivery mechanism for its ideas is the most gleefully entertaining comedy Soderbergh has made in decades.

With “Full Circle,” Steven Soderbergh once again immerses us in a multi-character crime caper. Typical of the director’s work, it’s intricate, obsessed with money, cognizant of sociopolitical realities and astute about human nature (if not super illuminating). This six-episode Max limited series is on the more serious end of the Soderbergh spectrum, “Traffic”-like rather than an “Ocean’s” romp, mousetrap-plotted as opposed to experimental. The overall effect is one of the smart, showy filmmaker doing donuts, but spinning the wheels of a well-tuned Escalade.
Written by Ed Solomon, who also provided the scripts for Soderbergh’s earlier mystery projects “Mosaic” and “No Sudden Move,” “Circle” transfers the basic idea of Akira Kurosawa’s procedural “High and Low” to a contemporary New York City with a much denser population of key characters. A scheme to kidnap the son of a wealthy family gets royally and morally screwed up...

From the word go, Steven Soderbergh’s crime caper Full Circle works furiously to introduce us to all of its relevant players. Derek (Timothy Olyphant) and Sam (Claire Danes) are a wealthy couple who enjoy a life of luxury thanks to the success of Sam’s father, Jeff (Dennis Quaid), a famous chef. But while everything seems like the picture of perfection inside their lavishly remodeled New York apartment, dark family secrets are dragged, kicking and screaming, into the light when their teenage son, Jared (Ethan Stoddard), is kidnapped.
The abduction plan is put into motion by a Queens-based crime syndicate headed by Cch Pounder’s enigmatic matriarch Savitri Mahabir. She believes that the actions of her late husband have left her family cursed for years, and after consulting with a spiritual leader back in Guyana, she concludes that capturing young Jared is the only way to remove it.

Death metal vets Incantation have announced their 13th studio album, Unholy Deification, arriving August 25th via Relapse. The band also offered up the video for lead single “Concordat (The Pact) I.”
Across their storied career, Incantation have combined death metal with the occult imagery and devilish fervor typically associated black metal. The Pennsylvania-based band is once again dabbling in the darkness on “Concordat (The Pact) I,” conjuring a murky psychedelia through dissonant riffs, obscured growls, and a cave-like sonic atmosphere. The sepia-toned video, rife with ancient scrolls and runes, drives home the band’s abyssal meditations.
“I’m not interested in playing it safe,” said Incantation guitarist-singer John McEntee in the album press release. “I think other people feel that there are limits to what we do. However, I don’t see it that way. If it feels right, then it’s Incantation. The songs we write are an honest expression of ourselves.

Claire Danes, Zazie Beetz, Timothy Olyphant, Dennis Quaid and more of the cast of Max’s Full Circle hit the red carpet in New York City on Sunday to celebrate the premiere of their upcoming series.
One thing the entire cast agreed on was how great it was to work with director Steven Soderbergh and how he was a big part of why they wanted to join the thriller in the first place.
“It was really special,” Olyphant told The Hollywood Reporter of working with the Oscar-winning filmmaker on the project that launches July 13. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I’ve never seen anything like him. … I don’t take this lightly, he really just does it in a way that I’ve never seen anyone do it.”
He continued, “Anytime you’re around someone you’re like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know you could do it that way.

To Washington Heights we go. The Tony Awards head to a new venue this year, the United Palace, but the excitement of honoring the year’s best in theater is the same as ever. If, like me, you can’t wait for Sunday night’s event to begin, that’s where math can come in.
Similar to the Oscars, I’ve built a mathematical model to predict the Tonys in all 26 categories, based on a combination of which categories a show is nominated in, the aggregated predictions of various Broadway critics, and the results of the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama League Awards. The model is trained on historical Tony Awards data over the past quarter-century — inputs that have done a better job of predicting each category in the past get more weight in this year’s predictions. In some years, the favorites will dominate, like the final...

Emma Watson once linked up with Star Wars star John Boyega in the 2017 feature The Circle. But after Boyega made a blunder on set, Watson did what she could to help her co-star recover.

Boyega and Watson, both known for starring in mega franchises, were in a more intimate feature with The Circle. The 2017 project was a movie that followed Watson and Boyega as two young employees of a powerful social media company. Watson was offered the main role, and quickly grew attached to the film.
“It really stuck with me, the story and the questions that it raised. I found myself weeks later pondering different aspects of it and I think that’s always a good sign for a story or something I might potentially work on.

Marvel’s mid-2000s Fantastic Four films once featured Jessica Alba as The invisible Woman. But Alba wanted to do a bit more for her character by sabotaging her looks for the part.

Alba was already excited to star in the 2005 superhero film. What originally drew her to the film was how different the script was from other movies that floated her way. Fantastic Four was a welcome change to the kinds of unflattering parts she was being offered.
“The scripts I get are always for the whore, the motorcycle chick in leather or the horny maid,” Alba once told Glock (via Campus Circle). “I get all these screenplays that start, ‘Tawnya is in the shower. The water streams down her naked, perky breasts.’ I don’t think this is happening to Natalie Portman.

New Delhi, May 6 (Ians) A bug in Twitter exposed Circle tweets, a way to send tweets to select people and share thoughts with trusted friends, to the public users, the Elon Musk-run company has admitted.
In an email sent to Circle users, Twitter said that in April 2023, “a security incident may have allowed users outside of your Twitter Circle to see tweets that should have otherwise been limited to the Circle to which you were posting”.
Twitter said the bug has now been fixed, and the team knows what caused it, reports TechCrunch.
According to the company, “You choose who’s in your Twitter Circle, and only the individuals you’ve added can reply to and interact with the Tweets you share in the circle.”
However, this was not the case with Circle users.
Several Circle users had tweeted earlier that people outside of their Circle were liking their private tweets.
