Featured review
A series of horror/sci-fi shorts from around the world (though mostly the US), all directed by women. Some exquisite vignettes with high production values worthy of major studio outings. Not wanting to be too gender stereotypical, but much of the sex, overt brutality and machismo of male-led storytelling is avoided, although there is still some misogyny and violence against women, only occasionally turned on its head.
The order of stories is well-planned, building in tension and engagement levels, although the very last - Make the Call - was a slight disappointment. A delightfully unsettling mood, but possibly expects too much from the audience in filling the gaps.
A triptych of urban legends were my favourites. Go to Bed, Raymond is a 'monsters under the bed' chiller; Sleep Study plays on a mother's insomnia and has a killer payoff for those with an eye for detail; and my top pick, Border. The title is a mystery to me still, but there are nods to When a Stranger Calls and the Scream franchise.
Only one story uses obvious CGI, and is weaker for it. Most use relatable situations to devastating effect. There is much to like and little to snipe at. I did not know Etheris film fest before this but will look out in future. Recommended.
