Matt Berry has been a staple of British comedy for two decades, thanks to his memorable roles in shows like “The It Crowd,” “Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace,” “Snuff Box” and “Toast of London.”
And although he has been a part of other American productions before, it’s his role as Laszlo Cravensworth in the FX comedy “What We Do in the Shadows” that has brought him acclaim across the pond, including his first Emmy nomination for actor in a comedy series.
Berry is more than just an actor, though. He is also an incredibly accomplished musician, with nearly a dozen albums under his belt. So perhaps it is only fitting he learned about his Emmy nomination while he was in the studio working on his latest.
“I was playing drums, and I could see that something was going on with the phone because it was leaping around the table,” Berry says.

While it was originally touted as one of the big new series in development at Disney+, Nautilus hit choppy development waters and ended up in Davey Jones' turnaround locker. Fortunately for those of us in the UK and Ireland the show — inspired by Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea – has been picked up by Prime Video and is due to sail onto screens this October.
Nautilus has James Dormer at its creative helm and chronicles the origin story of Captain Nemo (Star Trek: Discovery and Toast Of London's Shazad Latif): an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family.
So he does what surely any of us would — he steals a formidable prototype submarine and escapes into the Indian Ocean with a ragtag crew, determined to enact revenge against the ruthless East India Mercantile Company.
The cast for the new show also features Georgia Flood,...

“Who is that actor?” It’s probably everyone’s reaction to their first experience of Britain’s Matt Berry. With his booming delivery, and an uncanny ability to draw out every last vowel and consonant from even the dullest of words, Berry has been a cult comic actor in the U.K. for 20 years now. He broke out there in 2012 with Toast of London, a surreal sitcom in which he appeared as the bitter, buffoonish, self-serious thespian Steven Toast. But in 2019, the FX show What We Do in the Shadows took his homegrown appeal overseas, as the shape-shifting 300-year-old vampire Laszlo in the mock-doc comedy show inspired by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s word-of-mouth movie hit from 2014.
Hardcore fans will remember him as Dr. Sanchez from Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place, a horror parody devised by Matthew Holness and Richard Ayoade that premiered to little fanfare in 2004 but has since gathered a devout following,...

British sitcom superstar Matt Berry says that many of the stateside pop-culture references in What We Do in the Shadows sail clear over his head. On the other hand, Jackie Daytona definitely gets the jokes — I’m pretty sure they have Seinfeld in Tucson, Arizonia.
In FX’s mockumentary horror comedy series What We Do in the Shadows, most of the main cast of characters are categorically ignorant of cultural norms in modern day Staten Island. After all, Lazslo Cravensworth and his housemates have been undead for many centuries, so it’s hard for them to keep up with the temporary trends that dominate Twitter in a country that’s younger than they are. And behind the scenes of the series created by New Zealanders and filled with English actors, many of the Yankee references and punchlines made in the series are about as opaque to the actors as the...

Black Water Pictures is thrilled to announce that their latest horror comedy, Members Club, will have its world premiere at this year’s Pigeon Shrine FrightFest on 24th August. This highly anticipated film, written and directed by Marc Coleman, is a wild fusion of The Full Monty and From Dusk Till Dawn, promising a unique blend of laughs and scares. It will certainly bring a bit of light relief to the otherwise rather dark and gruesome festival.
Members Club stars an impressive, extensive list of British talent including Dean Kilbey, Top Boy), Perry Benson, Barbara Smith, Juliet Cowan, Mark Monero, Steve Oram, David Schaal, Alan Ford, Liam Noble, and Peter Andre.
The film follows Wet Dreams, a down-and-out middle-aged male stripper group, as they grapple with a series of disastrous gigs and contemplate disbanding. Alan, the group’s optimistic frontman, seizes control and secures a seemingly lucrative gig in rural Essex.

This article contains casting spoilers for all eight episodes of Fallout.
The Fallout gaming franchise presents a big storytelling universe to play in. And that’s exactly what drew showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner to the Prime Video TV adaptation in the first place.
“It’s more creatively interesting to be able to build our own story in the world that they’ve carved out for us,” Wagner told Den of Geek. “That’s historically been the trajectory of Fallout. It’s traded hands many times, with different creative teams taking it over. It’s kept it fresh, kept it relevant. We chose to just vainly look at this as our Fallout.”
Of course, a big storytelling universe also requires a big cast to fill it up. Prime Video’s Fallout isn’t wanting for compelling lead characters thanks to Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), Maximus (Aaron Moten), and The Ghoul...

“What We Do in the Shadows” continued to be one of the funniest TV shows around with its fourth season as the series transformed from four vampire roommates to, pretty much, three vampires and a baby. The FX series is adapted from the 2014 movie of the same name, which was written and directed by Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement. Clement created the TV show himself while Waititi stayed on as executive producer. The show takes the same format as the film — a mockumentary following vampires living together as housemates.
Our vampire housemates here are Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Nandor (Kayvan Novak), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch). Each of them spearhead their own brand of comedy in this biting show and is deserving of rewards but it’s perhaps Berry who stands out the most in season four of the show.

How do you find lasting love in today’s world? For documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath’s (Emma Thompson) dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbour Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love.

The bubble, that surge of cash that over the past decades helped bankroll an unprecedented boom in TV drama production, appears to have burst.
TV producers, gathered in Cannes this week for the MIPTV international television market, are pondering a future in which the cost of TV drama continues to spike while the primary sources of financing, namely broadcasters and online streamers, are slashing their commissioning budgets.
“The cost of an hour of television drama in the U.K. has gone from £1.5 million ($1.86 million) to £2.5 million ($3.1 million) per hour, and you can’t finance that out of the U.K. market,” said Christian Baute of Headline Pictures, producers of Amazon Prime’s Man in the High Castle and Ten Percent. “Traditionally, over the last seven years, we went to America [for financing], but that money is ebbing [because] the American market is a mess.”

“If you want to make a TV drama about opium smokers, sadomasochists and imperial slavery in the 19th century, then write your own,” whines The Daily Mail‘s Peter Hitchens about Steven Knight’s new Great Expectations adaptation, presumably forgetting that in 2017, Knight did exactly that in 8-part Gothic Regency thriller Taboo.
Knight’s previous series starring Tom Hardy, bleeds into his take on Charles Dickens’ class and snobbery novel, which loses the comedy and grimes up the characters with the addition of adult content. Great Expectations returns to Knight’s constant theme of social mobility, moving away from ones roots, and the upper classes being mad, evil bastards, as explored in six series of Peaky Blinders.
Here’s the impressive cast amassed for this six-part drama.

Dan Harmon’s upcoming animated comedy “Krapopolis” hasn’t yet broadcast a single frame but, in an unprecedented move, Fox has already renewed the show for a further two seasons, president of scripted programming Michael Thorn revealed on Wednesday.
“Krapopolis,” which features an all-star voice cast including Richard Ayoade (“The It Crowd”), Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”) and Matt Berry (“Toast of London”) is set in Ancient Greece but, despite the olde-worlde get-up, it turns out Ancient Greece has a lot of similarities to the present day.
Ahead of previewing the show at London TV Screenings on Thursday, Thorn sat down with Variety to discuss the show and why Fox is betting on it being a runaway hit.
What was the decision behind the third season renewal when you haven’t even broadcast Season 1 yet?
I think the third season pick-up really speaks to our commitment to the show and frankly the quality of the series.

Matt Berry, the Englishman known for his trademark epic, boomy voice, has always embraced a unique persona ever since his first start on stage. Despite and indeed because of his highly theatrical delivery, the actor mostly appears in comedic roles, such as title character Steven Toast on "Toast of London," the incompetent CEO Douglas Reynholm in "The It Crowd," and most recently and perhaps famously, the horny vampire Laszlo on "What We Do in the Shadows."
The contrast between his royal-like demeanor and his penchant for absurdity defines Berry's humor. "Cigars, whiskey, open fire, Shakespeare, but all in the shape of a big hairy bear," sums up his "Toast of London" co-star Morgana Robinson. The actor has an impressive background in and passion for music, which helped him discover his brand of comedy and continues to influence his performances, including co-writing the musical parody "Ad/BC: A Rock Opera" with...

If you’ve seen the British satire “Toast of London,” chances are that voiceover engineer Clem Fandango’s name still rings in your ears. Now Shazad Latif, the man behind Fandango, Ash Tyler on “Star Trek: Discovery” and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde on “Penny Dreadful,” has nabbed his first romantic lead in “What’s Love Got to Do With It?”
The Shekhar Kapur-helmed acquisition title, which has a Gala world premiere Sept. 10 in Toronto, “has slightly more depth than a normal rom-com because it tackles arranged marriage,” Latif said. Lily James plays his character’s childhood friend, and complications ensue when she decides to make a documentary about the nuptials.

If you can believe it, this summer marks the 10th anniversary of BAFTA-winning British comedy series Toast of London’s genius pilot episode, co-created by and starring the ever memorable Matt Berry. He plays the obliviously unsuccessful actor and wannabe lothario Steven Toast; a man with zero brains and even less grace.
With four seasons down, including this year’s Toast of Tinseltown set across the pond, Toast of London is responsible for some legendary moments in comedy. The mere mention of the show among fans will elicit responses such as “Yes I can hear you, Clem Fandango!”, “Fire the nucular weapons!” and “Well, he can f**k that sky high”.
Toast is joined on the show by a clueless agent, a genteel landlord who’s also a retired actor, an arrogant acting rival and a casual lover who happens to be that rival’s wife. That’s not to...

As he’s said himself, he’ll probably never quite get away from his role at the posh one with the briefcase in three Channel 4 series and two films of Iain Morris and Damon Beesley’s teenage-angst-ridden sitcom. Although he had a damn good try as slightly less annoying son, Adam, in six series of Channel 4’s gone, but not forgotten, Friday Night Dinner.
Bird made his West End debut in 2017’s The Philanthropist with Charlotte “Ghosts” Ritchie, Lily Cole, Tom Rosenthal and Matt “Toast of London” Berry. In a three-star review, the Guardian’s Michael Billington described Bird’s performance as: “Funny rather than sad.

The adage “write what you know” works well for writer-director Peter Strickland with his Berlin Film Festival Encounters feature Flux Gourmet. The former member of The Sonic Catering Band makes rich work of a fictional culinary performance collective, while also tackling taboos in the depiction of stomach problems on screen.
The latter may sound comical, and often is, but there’s also a serious note to Strickland’s flatulent hero, Stones (Makis Papadimitriou), who recounts his suffering in a solemn voiceover as he describes working as a ‘dossierge.’ His job is to interview and document the artist collective in residence at an institute run by an indomitable Jan Stevens (Gwendoline Christie). But Stones finds himself increasingly drawn into their world and their politics, while silently suffering from bowel issues that keep him awake at night.
Desperate to avoid embarrassment, Stones details the measures he takes for his condition to remain undetected,...

For anyone else who spotted a familiar face on It's a Sin, you're not alone. Tracy Ann Oberman, otherwise known as Aunty Val from Friday Night Dinner, does indeed make an appearance on the show. Formerly known for playing Jackie (Tamsin Greig)'s best friend, and aunty to boys Adam (Simon Bird) and Jonny (Tom Rosenthal), she became a familiar favorite throughout the zany sitcom's six seasons. Oberman is known for her starring role on EastEnders, while she's also made appearances in Ricky Gervais's hilariously sad After Life, Toast of London, and Doctor Who, marking the first time she's worked with with It's a Sin producer Russell T Davies.
On It's a Sin, Oberman plays Carol Carter, a talent agent who seeks to help Ritchie (played by Olly Alexander) get his big break. Set in the 1980s, the show explores the effect of HIV and AIDS on London's West End performers,...

What We Do In the Shadows actor Matt Berry will revive his cult character, Steven Toast, after six years — and the comedy has been swooped up by the BBC after it originally aired on Channel 4.
BBC One and iPlayer have commissioned Objective Fiction to make six-part Toast Of Tinseltown (working title), which will spotlight eccentric and arrogant actor Toast as he attempts to become a movie star in Hollywood.
It follows three seasons of the show broadcasting on Channel 4 under the Toast Of London title. Berry, who co-writes the series with Arthur Mathews, won a BAFTA for his performance as Toast in 2015.
Berry said Toast would “very much approve” of the comedy’s move to the BBC, while Mathews added: “Hollywood is a brave new world for Toast. There will be triumphs and tribulations (but mostly tribulations – and indeed humiliations).”

The first season of the horror comedy “What We Do in the Shadows” received little awards attention despite being one of the funniest new shows on TV. Luckily, awards voters took notice, and the second season, which in many ways was even stronger than the first, has been rectifying that omission. The mockumentary received eight Emmy nominations last year, including Best Comedy Series and three for writing, and it seems poised to continue that momentum at the Golden Globes.

Exclusive: Channel 4 has back-tracked on its decision to commission a second season of Victorian-era comedy crime caper Year Of The Rabbit after the coronavirus pandemic forced the British broadcaster into £150M ($205M) of content cuts.
Channel 4 renewed Matt Berry’s Year Of The Rabbit in February last year, funding the Objective Media Group (Omg) show alongside AMC-owned U.S. cable network IFC. But now, Omg is on the hunt for a new partner for the comedy.
“Year Of The Rabbit is a victim of the devastating effects of Covid,” Omg chief executive Layla Smith told Deadline. “IFC are very committed to the show, but we will need to find another partner — and we’re working on that.”
The show stars Berry as a detective in Victorian London, who fights crime alongside his hapless partner, played by Freddie Fox, and the country’s first female police officer, performed by Susan Wokoma.

Right now, good news often feels like gold dust, so hearing that Charlie Brooker will bring back his award-winning Wipe series for a special look at the state of things in lockdown is a bit like finding a freshwater lake after crawling through the desert on your hands and knees for a month, wailing “whyyyyy” the whole time. Perhaps Brooker is stood just at the water’s edge, wearing a crisp white toga. “Drink,” he gestures. Hoarsely, gratefully, we respond: “yes …yes.” Things have gotten weird in the first paragraph again.
Screenwipe has been missing from our screens since 2016, when Brooker started focusing much of his energy on Black Mirror, which has become one of Netflix’s most popular series. Alma’s Not Normal was created and written by Sophie Willan, who plays Alma, a wild-child woman trying to get her life back on track following a recent breakup.
It was piloted earlier this month and earned rave reviews, with many critics calling on BBC Two to commission a full six-part series. Willan said she has been using the coronavirus lockdown as an opportunity to develop ideas for the show.

There are few people alive with Matt Berry’s line delivery skills. When he’s not leaning into the lofty, roller-coaster cadence that’s led to scene-stealing parts on “The It Crowd,” “Toast of London,” and most recently the TV version of “What We Do in the Shadows,” he’s an actor with a gift for raised eyebrows and comedic directness that can turn both short proclamations and impossibly syllable-d word chunks into the most dependable punchlines.
So it’s always a treat to see him take on a role that affords those talents a front-and-center spot. The latest TV project to do so is “Year of the Rabbit,” a period detective comedy that aired last summer on Channel 4 and makes its stateside debut this week on IFC. Berry stars as Di Eli Rabbit, a street-savvy detective dispensing with his own brand of pre-forensics sleuthing in 1880s London.

Keely Hawes, one of the breakout stars of Bodyguard, Veep’s Sally Phillips and Three Girls’ Jill Halfpenny have joined IFC and Channel 4’s comedy series Year of the Rabbit.
The trio have joined the show, which stars Toast of London’s Matt Berry, as it goes into production on location in the UK.
Hawes stars as the mysterious Lydia, Phillips is Princess Juliana of Bulgaria, and Halfpenny features as Rabbit’s ex, the deadly Flora.
The six-part series follows a group of Victorian detectives; Berry, who stars in Jim Hosking’s An Evening With Beverly Luff Linn and Matt Groening’s Netflix animation Disenchantment, plays Detective Inspector Rabbitt, a hardened booze-hound who’s seen it all, and his new, hapless, by-the-books partner, played by Parade End’s Freddie Fox. While investigating a local murder, the chief of police’s lewd but insightful adoptive daughter, played by Chewing Gum’s Susan Wokoma,...

IFC has acquired Fleabag from creator, writer, and actor Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The BAFTA-winning, six-part series about a dry-witted and unfiltered woman navigating life and love in London will premiere on IFC on Boxing Day, Wednesday, Dec. 26.
All six episodes of the series will air beginning at 11:00 pm and encore again in late night.
Adapted from her play of the same name, the dark but hilarious Fleabag follows Waller-Bridge through London as she tries to cope with recent tragedy. Comedy network IFC has acquired British cult comedy Toast of London, starring The It Crowd and Disenchantment’s Matt Berry.
The cable broadcaster has picked up all three seasons of the show, totalling 18 episodes, in a deal with All3Media International.
The series, which is produced by Objective Fiction, is set to launch in 2019. Episodes have previously been available via Netflix in the U.S.
Created by Arthur Mathews and Berry, the BAFTA award winning comedy stars Berry as Steven Toast, an eccentric, middle-aged actor with a sketchy past who spends more time dealing with his problems off stage than performing on it.
The show has been a cult hit on Channel 4 in the UK and has included guest appearances from the likes of Mad Men’s Jon Hamm and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme.
IFC’s Svp of Original Programming, Christine Lubrano said, “Matt Berry is absolutely the toast of IFC,...
