However, the streamer has made one possibility for the series to continue with a second season. Max has made a non-exclusive deal with Netflix to stream the show in the US, UK, Ireland, and New Zealand. The sci-fi genre has always been one of the most beloved among cinephiles as it gives us a new look at a particular technology or our world. There was a time when Max (formerly known as HBO Max) was the place for peak sci-fi shows but after taking off Westworld and Raised by Wolves from the service, and since then it has been lacking a bit regarding sci-fi shows. But still, we picked the seven best sci-fi shows that we could find on Max.
Avenue 5
Avenue 5 is a sci-fi dark comedy series created by Armando Iannucci. The Max series is set in the future and mostly in space and it follows the story of the crew and passengers on board the interplanetary cruise ship named Avenue 5. On May 24, Netflix released the new sci-fi movie Atlas starring Jennifer Lopez — it immediately broke into the top 1 movies on the platform, where it still remains, and also received far from the best (or rather catastrophically bad) ratings on Rotten Tomatoes — 19% from critics and 49% from viewers.
And even though the Rt score is often out of sync with reality — there are a large number of truly worthy films with low ratings — in this case, Rotten Tomatoes score is accurately conveying the impressions left after watching the new blockbuster.
What Is Atlas About?
In the near future, humanity is using holographic interfaces, neural communication, and hypersonic engines. Scientist Val Shepherd creates an advanced android, Harlan, who accidentally gains self-awareness.
He subjugates other robots and enters into a fierce confrontation with humans, resulting in millions of casualties, after which Harlan flies to another galaxy and promises to return to cleanse Earth of humans.

Beauty and terror so often become synonymous when it comes to quantifying natural world order, and a combination of both of these traits creates a synchronicity where humans with their mental shackles might feel out of place despite their apparent intellectual superiority. Charlie Huettner and Joseph Bennet’s ground-breaking animation series Scavengers Reign meditates on this aspect while raising some important thematic questions about the core essence of humanity, the cost of redemption, and the truth of survival through the story of castaway astronauts.
Visually remarkable to the point that the art style of the series mimics some of Moebius’ works in creature and environment design, which works wonders by aiming for a sensory overload of the viewers, Scavengers Reign is among those rare entries that remain unnoticed despite being a pioneering venture. It's not like HBO is the main sci-fi titles’ creator right now, but the network’s The Leftovers, Avenue 5 and, of course, The Last of Us were indeed gems of the genre. Aside from these series, there was also an animated one that managed to gain a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, although it hasn’t become as recognized as the mentioned titles.
Its plot revolves around the crew of a damaged interstellar ship who are forced to stay on an alien planet named Vesta. It’s rich in picturesque nature and unique creatures, but this beautiful image keeps lots of dangers hidden behind these landscapes.
The survivors decide to separate – just like in a typical horror movie – and all three groups are aimed to make their way back to the spaceship and not to die on Vesta.

The era of canceling successful shows with glowing reviews is gaining its momentum, and we’re not here for it. With all the drama unfolding around CBS and its brutal decisions to get rid of its best series with the highest ratings, some other networks have seemingly joined this weird trend.
It has recently been announced that Max’s brilliant and perfect-scored sci-fi animated series Scavengers Reign was canceled after the first season premiered back in October of 2023. However, the show seems to have a better perspective after being ditched by Max.
Based on HBO Max’s short 2016 film Scavengers, the animated show follows the crew of a damaged space freighter after they crash on a beautiful, yet very dangerous planet called Vesta. Separated into three groups, the crew explores Vesta’s tricky flora and fauna while trying to make their way back to the spaceship.

On October 19, 2023, the first episodes of the sci-fi animated series Scavengers Reign by directors Joe Bennett and Charles Huettner premiered on Max.
The project grew from the short film Scavengers into a full-blown animated series about the crashed crew of a cargo ship. On a breathtakingly beautiful and carnivorous planet, the characters are forced to adapt to life alongside merciless parasitic organisms.
The great beauty of Scavengers Reign is that under the guise of a survival story, Bennett and Huettner offer an entire world structured like an unpredictable machine. The planet lives a life of its own – so enchanting and eerie that you can watch it endlessly.
The animated series is an unusual and exciting experience. With a minimum of dialogue, it asks a maximum of questions.

Fans of science fiction have simultaneously seen something similar to Max’s new adult animated series Scavengers Reign and absolutely nothing like it before.
It’s a dichotomy that the show’s creative team leaned into when trying to create a world that houses a group of surviving crewmembers from the Demeter, a deep-space freighter ship damaged by a solar flare and stranded on a beautiful but terrifying planet. Separated and unaware the others have survived, each group — and in some cases a single individual — attempts to navigate and survive the hostile planet in hopes of eventual rescue.
Co-created by Joe Bennett and Charles Huettner, the series, based on their 2016 short Scavengers, has been adapted into a 12-episode series by Green Street Pictures. It’s one of the latest examples of how networks and platforms are not only increasingly interested in animated titles that expand genre representation, but ones that have clear live-action impulses,...

The opening credits sequence of Scavengers Reign is heavy with doom, with images of the Demeter, an interstellar freighter whose wreckage orbits an alien planet, dissonantly set to peaceful classical music. Bodies float in the vacuum of space, escape pods burn up in the atmosphere, and the leaping flames of a sun hint at the cause of the disaster. It’s a perfect encapsulation of the series that follows, a superb survival story depicting both the planet’s natural beauty and the violent, horrible ends it can visit upon the people who encounter it.
Rendered in a detailed 2D style by the prolific animation studio Titmouse, each of the show’s 12 half-hour episodes cuts between multiple perspectives. After all, the Demeter’s few survivors are scattered in different terrestrial environments, unaware of one another’s existence, and the series delights in foregrounding their often ingenious use of the local ecosystem to survive.

"This place... it's like a puzzle. Nothing really makes sense in the way we know it..." This exquisite adventure is about a crew exploring a "hostile world allowed to thrive without human interference" on an "unforgiving alien planet." The visuals in this are absolutely incredible! While this look is common in graphic novels, I don't think we've ever seen anything like this on screen. Blumhouse, Futurama, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Archer, Shining Vale, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and a new Goosebumps series are among the panels, screenings and exclusive first looks set for this year’s New York Comic Con.
On Thursday, ReedPop announced its initial programming slate for the 2023 edition of the annual pop culture convention, taking place at the Javits Center Oct. 12-15. It’s the first major schedule announcement for the fall con, which, like its convention predecessors this year, is navigating the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes against the AMPTP that limits talents ability to promote their work.
TV and film programming includes a Thursday Empire Stage panel dedicated exclusively to Blumhouse, with producer Jason Blum sharing exclusive details about Five Nights at Freddys, Night Swim and Totally Killer. Adult Swim Orders ‘Common Side Effects’ From ‘King of the Hill’ Creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels
“King of the Hill” creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels are partnering with Adult Swim on a new adult-animated comedy titled “Common Side Effects,” the network announced at Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The upcoming half-hour series is created by Joe Bennet and Steve Hely with Judge and Daniels executive producing. “Common Side Effects” dives into the world’s complicated responses when it’s revealed that the elixir of life does, in fact, exist. The comedy’s gateway into this complex reality are former high school lab partners Marshall and Frances. Together, they stumble upon a conspiracy involving big pharma, the government and a rare mushroom that very well may be the key to curing all the diseases in the world.
