Marvel's First Family hasn't had much luck on screen. There was the infamous 1994 Fantastic Four movie produced by the late Roger Corman which never officially saw the light of day and then the big budget 2005 and 2007 movies starring Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd and Michael Chiklis.
Those weren't great and were a product of their time; so, when a reboot from Chronicle director Josh Trank rolled around in 2015, there was a fair bit of excitement among fans.
The trailers promised a body-horror tale but studio-mandated reshoots turned it into a mess.
The team has sat on the shelf ever since, though that will finally change next year with Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four. Filmmaker Matt Shakman has assembled an impressive A-List cast, including Black Bird and Cruella star Paul Walter Hauser.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor admitted that those awful past efforts made him think twice about starring in this latest reboot.

“Gremlins” director Joe Dante is spilling some secrets 40 years after the film’s release, including revealing the lengths to which studio Warner Bros. went to have one scene cut out.
Dante told Total Film that the 1984 film proved to be contentious amongst studio executives for one specific scene where Kate (Phoebe Cates) tells Billy (Zack Galligan) that she hates Christmas because her father died during the season. Well, WB execs “hated” that.
“[The scene] encapsulated the whole ethos of the picture,” Dante said. “There’s a duality of humor and horror but Warner Bros. just hated it.”
However, the sequence still stayed in the final edit in part due to producer Steven Spielberg siding with Dante. Even that endorsement didn’t stop the suits.
“I heard after it was out they were sending instructions to projectionists to see if they could cut it, which thankfully didn’t happen,” Dante said.
Chris Columbus penned the script.

As fans of gaming, we’re living in times when game development can be a playground for creative minds to experiment freely. Yet, it is increasingly rare to see developers try out something that messes with your mind in all the ways you’d want them to.
As I write this, the voices in my head are trying to settle down. Between mind-grasping storytelling and its carefully mechanized gameplay elements, Odd Meter’s Indika is simply one of the most bizarre, philosophical, and self-aware games I’ve ever played.
Indika arrives on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation on May 2, 2024.
Trigger Warning: Mental health topics like psychosis, insanity, and schizophrenia.
The premise of Indika may seem simple on paper. Actually, no. I take that back. Nothing about this game will ever feel simple, and that’s the point of it. You take on the role of a young nun who feels completely...

Disney is once again trying to make a "Space Mountain" movie happen. This is one of the company's most cherished theme park rides as a staple of both Disneyland and Disney World for decades. Now, a pair of new writers have been brought on board to try and crack the code with this long-gestating adaptation. Whether or not they will be the ones to get it across the finish line is another question entirely.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec have been tapped to write the latest iteration of "Space Mountain" for Disney. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being. Applebaum and Nemec are known for their work on Amazon's wildly expensive series "Citadel," as well as Netflix's live-action "Cowboy Bebop" series, which was canceled after just one season. Superhero movies were nearing their maximalist peak in 2017 — "Avengers: Infinity War" was a year away, while the DC Extended Universe was self-destructively racing toward "Justice League" without a roadmap or significant audience buy-in — when James Mangold quietly, confidently subverted the genre with "Logan." There had been attempts at revisionist superhero films before, but they were mostly based on/influenced by explicitly revisionist graphic novels (e.g. Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" and Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy). Josh Trank's "Chronicle" was probably the boldest of the bunch, but that was a top-to-bottom original.
Mangold's "Logan" was different. It used Hugh Jackman, the man who'd been playing Wolverine for 17 years, to tell an X-Men tale that branched out from the film franchise's narrative to depict a Logan in physical decline. Nothing lasts forever — not even, apparently, Wolverine's mutant healing process. He is in unremitting pain, and each altercation plunges him deeper into agony.

The walls are closing in around Ted Cruz, and the Republican senator is lashing out.
Cruz, who has served two terms as Texas junior senator, is facing a tough reelection challenge from former NFL player and current U.S. Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas), who won Texas’ Democratic Senate primary in a landslide victory last month.
On Wednesday, Cruz begged for donation on Fox News while complaining that Allred is out fundraising his 2018 challenger, former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke, by leaps and bounds.

Kirsten Dunst would’ve liked to have been part of Spider-Man: No Way Home had she been asked to reprise her role of Mary Jane Watson.
In a new interview, Dunst revealed she would have agreed to have been part of the MCU that saw Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprise their Pater Parker roles alongside current Spider-Man Tom Holland.
“No, no. I would have,” Dunst told British GQ after they asked if anyone had reached out to reprise her role.
Although Dunst says she has not seen the 2021 film directed by Jon Watts, she says it would’ve been interesting to see her Mary Jane and Maguire’s Peter Parker reuniting.
“It would be funny to be like, Ok, let’s take Tobey [Maguire] and I and do it in a weird indie way where it’s like a different kind of superhero film,” she said. “Like how they did that movie Chronicle.

Whether you prefer Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy, Kirsten Dunst’s performance as Mary Jane in Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy is widely respected. It’s her most successful movie financially so far.
Even though she’s taken on different roles in different kinds of movies since then, fans mostly link her to Peter Parker’s main love interest. That’s why people naturally wondered why she wasn’t in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
In a recent interview with GQ, Dunst confessed that she would have been open to making an appearance, but she never got the call. She also mentioned she hadn’t seen the movie, so she couldn’t say how her involvement would have played out.

No matter whether you are a fan of Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy, you have to agree that Kirsten Dunst’s portrayal of the former is legendary at this point. Dunst portrayed Mary Jane in Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy, which is still the most financially successful movie of her’s up to this point.
Since playing Mj, Dunst explored various roles in various genres but fans still mostly associate her with Peter Parker’s most iconic love interest, this is why naturally, questions arose on why she wasn’t included in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ alongside Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
In her recent interview with GQ Dunst admitted that she would have made an appearance but she wasn’t called, she also admitted that she never saw the movie, so couldn’t give an honest answer on how that would have worked.

Kirsten Dunst was too honest when she admitted that money was part of the reason why she appeared in Spider-Man in 2002. While she claimed money was the reason actors mostly took up superhero projects, she also believed Sam Raimi’s movie was very different from modern superhero films. She felt that Raimi’s movies were indie films disguised as superhero films, which is what she would want if another Spider-Man movie were made.

Dunst would have loved to return to Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tobey Maguire, just to revisit the relationship between Mary Jane and Peter Parker. It appears that the Melancholia actress is ready to return to a fourth Spider-Man film, something Raimi has already expressed interest in making.

Just as the new Apple TV+ series The New Look takes viewers back to the 1940s — when Christian Dior erupted onto the fashion scene — the 2024 Oscars also provided a portal back to that era of elegance.
Academy Awards presenter and Dune: Part Two actress Anya Taylor-Joy stunned Sunday night wearing a Dior Haute Couture crystal-encrusted scalloped dress that was actually inspired by two gowns from 1949.
Both are currently on view at a breathtaking fashion exhibition, “Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style,” which is on view through Aug. 11 at San Francisco’s de Young Museum (which has the dresses in its permanent collection).
The pair of famed archival dresses are called “Junon” And “Venus” and were part of Christian Dior’s fall/winter 1949-1950 haute-couture collection. To create a modern version for Taylor-Joy (an ambassador for the luxury house since 2021), Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri fashioned a slimmed-down silhouette,...

The Game of Thrones finale, and really the entire final season, are still incredibly divisive among fans. From controversial character arcs to the infamous dark episode, there has been plenty for people to complain about for the last five years. However, according to a Wall Street Journal profile (via Variety) of series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the ending of Game of Thrones could have been much, much worse.
Originally, Benioff and Weiss wanted to film the finale as a film trilogy rather than spread it out over the 13 episodes that comprise the seventh and eighth seasons, but HBO’s owners at the time, AT&T, weren’t too crazy about that idea. Apparently, these executives had other ideas for how to best get the epic ending to this years’ long story to viewers.

Another low-wattage weekend is hot on the heels of last weekend’s disappointing opening for Matthew Vaughn’s would-be franchise starter, Argylle. Typically, studios are wary of putting out any major movies on Super Bowl weekend, as virtually no one goes to movies on game day. That said, there have been exceptions to the rule, with Taken and Chronicle both being big openers way back in the day. In recent years, though, the numbers have been more modest, with Death on the Nile taking in $12.8 million in 2022 and Magic Mike’s Last Dance cratering with a measly $8.3 million opening last year.
This weekend’s sole wide new release, Lisa Frankenstein, isn’t likely to do much better. Initially, Box Office Pro had it opening anywhere from $7-12 million, but the early reviews have been abysmal, and now the opening is pegged from anywhere between $5-9 million. Given that it only has a $14 million budget,...

Anime and manga live-action adaptations, especially English-language ones, have a mixed track record. For every "One Piece" and "Speed Racer," which manage to capture the endless imagination of the medium, there are thrice as many "Dragonball Evolution" and "Ghost in the Shell" bad movies that nearly ruin their source material.
One of the best ones is not really based on an anime or manga — though it is quite clear that "Akira" was a huge influence — Josh Trank and Max Landis' "Chronicle." The film is set in Seattle and follows three teens who acquire telekinetic powers. Soon enough, the fun and games turn dark and deadly when one of them begins to lose control and relish in their power. With all of the talk about Silent Hill 2, it’s easy to forget about the other Silent Hill games that were announced by Konami, and even the ones that weren’t officially announced. That latter point, of course, refers to Silent Hill: The Short Message, which when we last heard about it, had its info leaked by the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee.
Now it’s the Australian Classification Board (Acb) doing the leaking. Per Video Games Chronicle, in the board’s annual report, alongside rating the game as MA15+ for “Strong suicide themes, horror violence, and coarse language”, the Acb has revealed new information regarding The Short Message.
Do note that these next sections includes spoilers, so be warned.
According to the report, Silent Hill: The Short Message is an “exploration‑based psychological horror game” that centres on characters in an apartment building called The Villa in modern‑day Germany.

The Oscar-winning actress has railed against the idea that writers can only tell stories about their own race or religion after the so-called “Jewface” row over her new movie Golda.
“It’s more frightening for a writer to be told they are not allowed to write about subjects with which they don’t have an immediate DNA connection,” Mirren told the Radio Times. “I imagine it must be very alarming. And ridiculous.”
Mirren was responding to a statement from Golda writer Nicholas Martin, who said there is a “creeping authoritarianism” in the entertainment industry, leading to writers being told they “cannot do this or that.” He told the Radio Times: “Am I just supposed to write about middle-aged men living in south London?”
Neither Mirren nor Martin are Jewish, meaning they have been criticized for their involvement in Golda,...

If you want to give a great actor a role he can sink his teeth into with almost unseemly glee, there can’t be many better ways than to cast him as a critic in a period melodrama. That, at least, seems to be the idea behind “The Critic,” Anand Tucker’s tale of a nefarious theater reviewer in 1930s London starring Ian McKellen as the kind of awful person who must have been a lot of fun to play.
It is not, perhaps, a role that would challenge the magnificent McKellen much, but who needs a challenge when you can spit out viciously witty bon mots while wearing fancy duds and being lit at all times for maximum dramatic effect? And while McKellen’s Jimmy Erskine is a villain to remember, he isn’t a one-dimensional baddie. He’s a proudly gay man who can be arrested for who...

After Netflix released the first trailer for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” a biographical romance about Leonard Bernstein and his wife Felicia Montealegre, many viewers took issue with Cooper’s large prosthetic nose, deeming it the latest example of Hollywood’s stereotypical or inauthentic portrayal of Jewish people, known as “Jewface.”
But in a statement posted to Bernstein’s Twitter account, the late conductor’s children defended Cooper’s decision to “use makeup to amplify his resemblance” to their father. Cooper directed “Maestro” and stars as Bernstein opposite Carey Mulligan as Montealegre.
“Bradley Cooper included the three of us along every step of his amazing journey as he made his film about our father,” wrote Jamie, Alexander and Nina Bernstein. “We were touched to the core to witness the depth of his commitment, his loving embrace of our father’s music, and the sheer open-hearted joy he brought to his exploration.

When we meet Ben Grady (Grant Rosenmeyer), he can barely lift himself out of the living room chair. By the end of this lo-fi indie drama, he’s soaring among the clouds like some kind of schlubby superhero — or one of those kids from “Chronicle” — having mastered what “The Secret Art of Human Flight” calls … well, you heard the title. Maybe not “mastered” exactly, but Ben’s finally getting the hang of it, and that’s exhilarating, since flying couldn’t be farther from the state we found him in earlier, wallowing in melancholy after the unexpected death of his wife Sarah (Reina Hardesty).
As presented by director H.P. Mendoza, Ben and Sarah were practically the cutest couple you could imagine. They published children’s books together and made video diaries for their followers on TikTok, which Ben insisted they turn into a kind of insurance policy so that each...

Wolfgang Hohlbein’s fantasy novel has been adapted by Amazon Prime, as the streaming platform just released the limited series The Griffin this week. Originally in German, the limited series has six episodes with a runtime of 40 minutes each. Based in the ’90s, the series showcases the adventures of three kids, Mark, Memo, and Becky, as they try to save the world from an apocalyptic creature called The Griffin. It’s up to these 16-year-olds to stop a winged monster from entering the realm of humans and capturing it, but how are they supposed to accomplish such a monumental task? Armed with magic weapons and an ancient book, of course. The show captures the ’90s vibe perfectly, with the old instruments and the music of that day and age, and the monster designs are also very impressive, although the story remains a little jagged around the edges. Here’s what...

San Francisco, May 21 (Ians) Elon Musk apparently told a Twitter investor during a 4 a.m. call that he would pay the company’s office rent “over my dead body”.
According to a new lawsuit filed by six former Twitter employees against Twitter, Pablo Mendoza, a venture capitalist who invested in Twitter 2.0, had a chat with Musk in the wee hours, reports Business Insider.
Musk bluntly told Mendoza that not paying rent was non-negotiable with ‘over his dead body’ remark.
The lawsuit said that Joseph Killian, a plaintiff who worked at Twitter for 12 years and oversaw office design, was aware that Musk decided to stop paying office rent.
“Killian attempted to convince Musk, via Mendoza, of the danger of Musk’s new position that no rent would be paid whatsoever, pointing out that any attempt to renegotiate the terms of Twitter’s many leases would be doomed to failure,” the lawsuit alleged.

A tension that expands from book to screen in the adaptation of Laura Dave’s best-selling novel “The Last Thing He Told Me” lies in Hannah Hall’s (Jennifer Garner) friendship with Jules (Aisha Tyler).
The seven-episode drama series, which premiered April 14 on Apple TV+, follows Hannah and Bailey Michaels (Angourie Rice) as they are forced to come together to figure out why Bailey’s father and Hannah’s husband Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) vanishes after his tech company, The Shop, goes under FBI investigation for fraud. Hannah’s best friend since high school Jules (Aisha Tyler), a San Francisco Chronicle sports journalist, warns Owen after her colleague Max gets a tip from a source about the FBI raid.

Dee Snider was recently dropped as a performer at the upcoming San Francisco Pride Parade & Celebration after he showed support for a controversial statement made by Kiss’ Paul Stanley about sex reassignment treatment for children. Now, the Twisted Sister frontman has issued a response, citing his long history of support for the Lgbtqia+ community.
After Stanley stated that “normalizing” sex reassignment for children has “turned it into a sad and dangerous fad,” Snider chimed in, “You know what? There was a time where I ‘felt pretty’ too. Glad my parents didn’t jump to any rash conclusions! Well said, @PaulStanleyLive.”
While San Francisco Pride did acknowledge that “Dee has always been a vocal supporter of LGBTQ+ rights,” the organization pointed out that it was “heartbroken and angry” when the singer “expressed support for Kiss’s Paul Stanley’s transphobic statement.”
In a Facebook post on Friday (May 5th) titled, “So I Hear I’m Transphobic.

Warning: contains major spoilers for the Seven Kings Must Die ending.
That battle was the crowning moment of Seven Kings Must Die, twenty-plus minutes of visceral squelch and blood flying on a scale that The Last Kingdom hasn’t seen before.
But after the fighting was over, when the dead had been counted and the wounded carried away to their fates, the film ended with a quiet scene that concluded a thread woven throughout this story from the start. Alfred’s dream was finally achieved – England was formed – not by him, nor by Edward, but by King Aethelstan and Uhtred Ragnarsson, who was left hanging in the balance between life and death.
Does Uhtred Die at the End of the Film?

UK director Michael Winterbottom has suggested that his 2022 Gaza documentary Eleven Days In May had a tougher time securing a UK broadcast partner following an article in the London-based Jewish Chronicle linking his Palestinian co-director to Hamas.
The Kate Winslet-narrated documentary Eleven Days In May commemorates 68 Palestinian children killed by the Israeli bombing of Gaza in 2021. It consists of filmed vignettes in which the family recall their lost children and speak of their loss.
Supported by Oxfam and Unicef, it was shot by Gaza-based filmmaker Mohammed Sawwaf and his team, with Winterbottom working remotely in the UK, focusing mainly on the editing.
Revolution Films theatrically released the film in the UK in May 2022 to positive reviews, but the film became mired in controversy following a report in the Jewish Chronicle suggesting Sawwaf had Hamas connections.

The biggest deal that occurred during the Sundance Film Festival wasn’t one that went down at the event itself. Film fans love to speculate on what canceled movie productions would have become. What would it have been like to see Steven Spielberg's science fiction epic "Robopocalypse," Quentin Tarantino's Vega Brothers movie, Stanley Kubrick's ambitious "Napoleon" biopic, or Alejandro Jodorowsky's "Dune" adaptation? Would they be everything fans imagined them to be? Or crushing disappointments? While it's fun to speculate, we can't put our faith into something that doesn't exist. Likely, these films wouldn't have lived up to fans' massive expectations.

Dore Schary’s post-MGM personal production is a class act in every respect — Montgomery Clift, Robert Ryan and Myrna Loy are well cast in a story of intimate emotional cruelty. It’s from a play derived from Nathanael West’s soul-crushing novella, and despite the talent involved, it can’t shake the feeling of an overheated TV drama. The acting and characterizations are riveting. Young Dolores Hart is a beacon of light amid the gloom and misery, and in her first movie, Maureen Stapleton’s’ fireball of anxiety and malice all but steals the show. The fine cinematography is again by the great John Alton.

Three weeks following the death of Sacheen Littlefeather, the activist who famously accepted Marlon Brando’s Oscar for “The Godfather” at the 1973 Academy Awards, a new column alleges that Littlefeather had been posing as a Native American through her life.
Published Saturday in the San Francisco Chronicle, the piece features quotes from Littlefeather’s sisters, Rosalind Cruz and Trudy Orlandi, who called the activist’s identity as a Native American a “lie.”
Notably, several Native American writers and activists have denounced the Chronicle column on social media, saying that its writer, Jacqueline Keeler, has long-exercised a vendetta against Littlefeather, among other figures she calls “Pretendians.” They also say Littlefeather’s sisters thought they were of Native American ancestry until Keeler informed them they weren’t.
“Her desire to weed out Pretendians has led to a violent vendetta against genuinely reconnecting Natives who don’t meet colonial standards,” wrote CarlyMButton on Twitter.

Less than a month after Sacheen Littlefeather died, her two biological sisters are claiming in on-the-record interviews that the late actress and Native American activist wasn’t Native American at all.
In an explosive report published Saturday in the San Francisco Chronicle, Rosalind Cruz and Trudy Orlandi accused their late sister of being an ethnic fraud. For decades, Littlefeather claimed her father, Manuel Ybarra Cruz, was a White Mountain Apache and Yaqui Indian, but the sisters say their father’s family actually came from Mexico and that he was born in Oxnard, California, about an hour north of Los Angeles. Their mother, Gertrude Barnitz, was white.
In one of her final interviews, Littlefeather said of her Oscars rejection speech in 1973 that she “spoke my heart, not for me, myself, as an Indian woman but for we and us, for all Indian people … I had to speak the truth.”

The San Francisco Chronicle published an investigative report Saturday that claims Oscars and Native American icon Sacheen Littlefeather – best known for her appearance on behalf of Marlon Brando to refuse his Best Actor Academy Award for The Godfather — was not who she claimed to be.
Her sisters said in the article that Littlefeather, who died earlier this month shortly after receiving an official apology from the Academy, was not of Apache heritage, but rather half-Mexican. They also said she did not grow up with an abusive father, or in terrible poverty.
Littlefeather’s sisters, Orlandi and Rosalind Cruz, approached Native American journalist and activist Jacqueline Keeler to tell their story. Keeler is known for co-creating the #NotYourMascot hashtag in 2013, which brought about a name change for the NFL’s Washington team. She also authors a “Pretendians” list, exposing people who make false claims of American Indian heritage.

Gamestop brought more than power to the players when it caused a financial catastrophe on Wall Street in 2021. At the time, Gamestop shares soared to unfathomable heights, making millionaires out of Redditors and costing hedge funds millions as traders scrambled to contain the situation. The impossible event taught Wall Street a valuable lesson about what happens when traders go against their masters, and now Sony is making a Gamestop movie to preserve the story.

Kanye West’s Instagram account was restricted over his exchange with Diddy due to antisemitic language, and it didn’t take long for the “Gold Digger” rapper to find himself in hot water with another social media platform over similar concerns.
As the Jewish Chronicle reported, on Friday West issued a tweet that was so blatantly antisemitic that Twitter took it down shortly after it was issued.

Like most television series, Stranger Things underwent a long creative process before it finally hit Netflix. As series creators Ross and Matt Duffer pitched their project to various networks and studios, it took a different shape, meeting the trends of the time. And in the mid-2000s, when they began work on the project that eventually became Stranger Things, studios were all about found footage. With movies like The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity making big profits from small investments, studios were much more interested in found footage projects, especially from untested creators like the Duffers.
Describing the origins of the show to Variety, the Duffers said the first inklings for the show came from a movie idea about the Montauk Project, a purported government program involving children with Esp and a monster. “We love conspiracy theories,” admitted Matt, and the project “was something we hadn’t seen on screen before.

Kim Kardashian is calling for the temporary prison release of the father of Eliahana Cruz Torres — one of the children killed in the Uvalde, Texas mass shooting — so he can attend her funeral.
“Her family are desperately hoping that her father, who is incarcerated for a non violent drug offense, be granted temporary release so that he can attend her funeral,” the reality TV star tweeted with a photo of Eliahana.
Kardashian explained that Ellie’s family’s requests to have him temporarily released had been denied since the shooting.
