Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello divorced after separating in July 2023. Joe filed for divorce from Sofia, and Sofia cited a couple of reasons for the divorce. First, she said they had different outlooks on having children. Second, she blamed a miniseries she was shooting at the time.
Here is what Sofia had to say about her divorce and how he role as the Cocaine Godmother in Griselda played into it.
Sofia Vergara Says ‘Cocaine Godmother’ Contributed To Divorce
In early 2022, Sofia Vergara took on a very different role than she is used to. Instead of her usual lightweight comedic roles, she played a mafia queen in Griselda. In the movie, she played Griselda Blanco, a real-life Colombian drug dealer known as the Cocaine Godmother who operated in Miami from the 1970s through the early 2000s.

Sofia Vergara Hints Netflix Show Was Responsible For Divorce. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Sofia Vergara recently opened up about the psychological toll of playing “Cocaine Godmother” in the Netflix show Griselda. During a recent Netflix Fysee event, the 51-year-old Modern Family star alluded that the gruelling shooting schedule could have contributed to her divorce from Magic Mike Star Joe Manganiello.
Sofia Vergara, who took on the Netflix role in 2022 while she was still married to Joe Manganiello, previously told Spanish media that they separated because her husband of 10 years wanted children.
According to The Sun, during a Netflix Fysee event last Sunday, Sofia Vergara recalled that although she filmed in Los Angeles, she barely slept in her own bed after being on set for up to 16 hours a day wearing prosthetics. Sofia reportedly found it easier to crash in nearby motels but had difficulty relaxing after long days in character.

Why Sofia Vergara’s White Dress in ‘Griselda’ Amplifies Her Transformation Into a Ruthless Drug Lord
Countless stories have been told about the male-dominated culture of drug kingpins such as Pablo Escobar and Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, but little has been written about female Columbian drug lord Griselda Blanco.
“Every story you’ve ever heard about Griselda is that she’s a demon and monster, but it’s never that simple,” says “Griselda” executive producer and showrunner Eric Newman. In telling her story, there needed to be an emotional heartbeat to the character as they peeled back her layers, Newman says. “One thing that was important to us was that the audience loved her, and we got on her side quickly because she does some pretty horrible things.”
Netflix’s six-part limited series “Griselda” stars Sofía Vergara as a woman who flees Colombia and rises in 1970s Miami. There, she builds her cocaine empire and charts a downfall marred by paranoia, power and, ultimately, tragedy.

Sofía Vergara has shared some behind-the-scenes stories about The Hollywood Reporter‘s latest cover story, highlighting this year’s drama actress roundtable.
The Griselda star, who recently had extensive knee surgery, said on Thursday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! that the cover shoot with Nicole Kidman, Jodie Foster, Jennifer Aniston, Anna Sawai, Brie Larson and Naomi Watts was less than two weeks after her operation.
So her team wanted her to cancel, with them telling her, “We don’t think you’re in good shape, you’re not looking good.'” At the time, she was relying on a walker to move around, as she couldn’t walk.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

The concept of the limited series swept the TV world recently, and it felt like it happened overnight.
It is not an entirely new idea, as miniseries have existed since the time of radio dramas.
However, people lost interest in them at some point, and the era seemed to come to an end.
So much so that in 1991, the Emmy Awards merged Outstanding Miniseries with Outstanding TV Movie.
After numerous name changes to the category, the concept suddenly resurged -- the limited series was born.
With the popularity of American Horror Story, in 2015 they changed the category to Outstanding Limited Series.
TV Shows Should Make Stars, Not Depend On Them
But now, the idea carries almost no weight due to networks and streamers renewing the popular limited series and turning them into plain old series.

Sofía Vergara opened up about the possibility of a Modern Family reunion.
On a recent episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Awards Chatter podcast hosted by its executive editor of awards, Scott Feinberg, the 51-year-old actress revealed her hopes for another run at Gloria Delgado-Pritchett.
“I mean, I would do it in a second,” Vergara said when asked about a Modern Family revival. “Of course, I would do it.”
The actress said that despite it only being four years since the show ended, she would participate in a revival “just for the experience of doing it again,” noting that she wasn’t sure if it would do “good or bad.”
Elsewhere in the conversation, the Hot Pursuit star spoke candidly about how “Narco traffic” impacted her childhood experiences growing up in Colombia.

Sofía Vergara is an actress best known for playing trophy wife Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the ABC sitcom Modern Family from 2009 through 2020. During that run, the New York Times described her as “practically a loaded semiautomatic aimed at those who don’t think beautiful women can be funny,” and she was nominated for four Emmys, four Golden Globes and two SAG Awards; was named one of People’s 50 most beautiful people in the world; and topped Forbes’ list of the highest-paid actresses in the world.

“We wanted to create a unique world that the audience bought into and lived in the reality of this character,” explains Armando Salas, the Cuban-born cinematographer for the six-part Netflix biographical crime drama “Griselda.” “We wanted people to feel absorbed into the world of Griselda Blanco.” That world looks as if it was filmed in Miami in 1978, found 46 years later and put on the air when in fact it was shot primarily in Long Beach, California in 2022. The washed-out period details and tone mirror the era when Blanco – a Colombian mother who transformed herself into a drug “queenpin” – ruled Miami as one of the first cartel leaders to bring cocaine to the United States. The limited series stars Sofia Vergara of “Modern Family” fame in her first dramatic role. “We spent a lot of time thinking about the look and feel, something based on reference material but that was our...

Eric releases on Netflix on May 30, 2024.
A six-episode limited series starring heavyweights Benedict Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffmann will be available on Netflix at the end of May. Abi Morgan created and wrote the series. She is known for her incredible work on films like Shame and The Iron Lady and her Emmy-winning writing on The Hour. The series follows a set of parents who are struggling after their son is kidnapped on his way to school.
Set in New York, Eric replicates some of the incredible work of past crime-thrilling series from Netflix, such as Mindhunters, Griselda, and Ripley. The often dark tone of the series brings a nice twist with the introduction of Eric. Eric is a character that Vincent and Cassie’s son Edgar had drawn. The larger-than-life monster is brought to life after Edgar’s kidnapping, bringing a much-needed comedic aspect to the series.

Eric Newman was the showrunner for the Netflix series “Narcos” in 2015 when Sofia Vergara – then in the middle of her run starring as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the multiple Emmy-winning comedy “Modern Family” – invited him to her home to pitch him on the idea of her fronting a project where she portrayed the Colombian drug “queenpin” Griselda Blanco. “Obviously I knew her work and was a fan of hers,” Newman recalls. “I also knew she (Vergara) was Colombian, which is an important distinction. And I knew a lot about Griselda Blanco and was fascinated with her as a character. I felt that if Sofia was willing to take the risk…just the thought that she was interested in doing this was appealing. So I went into the meeting very excited and hopeful that I would be met with a level of passion and conviction that would help make my decision very easy – and I was.

Last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes came as a surprise and stalled the release of most movies and TV shows that were at least co-produced in the US. Now that the strikes have ended and the studios have been given the green light to resume production, 2024 seems pretty overwhelming with the sheer number of shows that have joined the streaming services' libraries.

Sofia Vergara is hardly the first person you would think of when deciding to cast the role of a real-life cartel boss (or “queenpin”). The actress who co-starred for 11 seasons as the feisty Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on “Modern Family” – a role that earned her four consecutive Emmy nominations – certainly had comedy chops to spare. But after watching the 2006 documentary “Cocaine Cowboys” and seeing a profile of Griselda Blanco, Vergara felt an odd kinship with the kidnapping, murdering drug lord who wreaked untold misery while bringing cocaine to Miami in the 1980s. “I wanted to do more acting and was looking for someone that I felt I could (portray) because I don’t have any acting training,” Vergara explains. “That’s how I found Griselda. Not that I would kill anyone, or sell drugs, of course. But like her, I am Colombian, I’m a woman, a mother, I’m an immigrant.

Sofía Vergara is expanding on her reasoning for not wanting to have any more kids at this point in her life.
The Griselda star sat down with People for its cover this week and opened up about how in dating, following her split from Joe Manganiello, someone wanting more kids was a dealbreaker for her. The actress previously revealed in Spanish newspaper El País that her ex-husband’s desire for more children was a big part of their split.
“My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom,” she told the publication in a story published in January. “I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother. So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children.”

“We are not there to be the sex police. We actually want it to look really good and we’re very highly trained in how to do that” –Rebecca Johannsen, on the role of an intimacy coordinator
As the film community continues to process the fallout of the #MeToo movement and keeps growing in its awareness of the trauma caused by the mishandling of actors on set, a critical new production role has emerged: the intimacy coordinator (Ic). But while the role has been largely welcomed by the industry since it started appearing on call sheets in 2017 the job is still widely misunderstood.
To teach our community more about the value a skilled Ic can bring to a project, Film Independent Education’s Filmmaker Tuesdays invited intimacy coordinator Rebecca Johannsen–of Intimacy Professionals Association (Ipa)–to hold a group workshop around the topic on April 23 at Film Independent’s Wilshire Boulevard HQ.

But while the role has been largely welcomed by the industry since it started appearing on call sheets in 2017 the job is still widely misunderstood.

Netflix added a whopping 9.33 million subscribers in the first quarter of the year, an impressive figure that blew away Wall Street’s expectations. We now know it has just shy of 270 million subscribers worldwide.
Well, don’t get used to it. 2024 is the last year Netflix will share publicly how many subscribers it added or lost in a given quarter during its quarterly earnings reports, the company announced on Thursday to kick off its fiscal 2024.
The streamer writes that beginning in Q1 2025, Netflix will “stop reporting quarterly membership numbers and Arm,” which stands for “average revenue per membership.” So not only will we not know each quarter how many subscribers Netflix has at a given moment, we also won’t know how much revenue it made off each of those subscribers.
The company explains it’s now focused on revenue, operating margins, and engagement (time spent on Netflix) as its main barometers for success.

Netflix added 9.33 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2024, for which Wall Street had anticipated 4.9 million net adds. That’s a legit wow, as is Netflix’s new grand total of 269.60 million global paid subscribers.
Sure, Netflix added more than 13 million subs in the prior quarter, but in the last Q1, the company added fewer than 2 million subscribers. Things have been going very well for Netflix as of late. A year ago, shares in Netflix (Nflx) traded around $331; today, they closed at $611.15. After hours, the Nflx share price declined due to the company’s Q2 earnings forecasts not burning as bright.
And perhaps this also didn’t help: Next year, Netflix is making some major changes to how it reports its membership. The company said in today’s shareholder letter it will no longer report its subscriber tally on a quarterly basis, rather it will just announce “major subscriber milestones” as it crosses them.

Based on the combined predictions of over 2,000 Gold Derby users, Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Walton Goggins (“Fallout”) are not generally expected to reap 2024 Emmy bids at this time. However, their chances of soon reaching predicted nominee status greatly improved over the past week thanks to their new category placements. The limited series actress’ odds jumped from 100/1 to 66/1 after she migrated from lead to supporting, while the dramatic actor went from 62/1 to 37/1 by making the opposite move.
Gladstone’s “Under the Bridge” cast mate, Riley Keough, joined her in switching from lead to supporting but still retains her original 100/1 odds. The other two performers who rose above their previous 100/1 odds this week are lead actress Julianne Moore (“Mary & George”) and featured actor Mark Ruffalo (“All the Light We Cannot See”), both of whom hail from limited series.
At this point, the non-continuing series races are proving to be the most dynamic ones overall.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we break down the loaded limited series field.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve reached what is maybe my favorite Emmys category of the year. Peak TV is dead and Mass TV is arguably on the ropes, but you wouldn’t know it from the absolutely stacked limited series and TV movie roster. What a time to be alive? There are multiple series here that I’m excited about, too many, in fact, to fit into the five slots for Best Limited Series. But right now I feel pretty good about the shows I do have represented. First in my heart and on my predictions list is “Shōgun,” our favorite “Succession” prequel and just a complete smash. Great crafts, beautiful crafts,...

Sofia Vergara is back on our small screens in a big way thanks to the her new Netflix series “Griselda.” The lavish production chronicles the rise of Griselda Blanco, known as the “cocaine Godmother,” as she flees from Medellín, Colombia, to Miami and creates one of the most notorious cartels in history.
Vergara gives her best performance in years as the ruthless, demanding, and brutal Griselda. She owns every scene she’s in and eats up not just the scenery but the entire cast, too. She commands every moment and delivers a complex portrait of a powerful woman, with critics agreeing Vergara is at the top of her game.
Barry Levitt (Empire) observed: “‘Griselda’ has given Vergara the chance to prove that she’s also a gifted dramatic actor — a challenge she more than rises to. Vergara (who also serves as executive producer) practically dissolves into the role, delivering an astonishing performance…...

The former model turned television star had her breakout role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on ABC’s Modern Family, which she played from 2009 to 2020. Known for her strong Colombian accent and deep, seductive voice, Sofia Vergara has a commanding screen presence, especially with her curvy, voluptuous figure. Netflix's Griselda is one of the best hits of 2024 so far, and there's a good reason that the show is breaking ground. Fans and critics alike have sung praises for the six-episode limited series.
The biographical crime drama tells the story of The Cocaine Godmother Griselda Blanco, who ruled the Miami underworld in the '70s and '80s and helped establish cocaine trade links between Colombia and the United States.
Sofia Vergara's role as the titular character is highly praised, and many want more to do with this crime drama. While we may not get more Griselda, there are several shows to watch that are similar to the series.
10. Weeds
Weeds is a funnier, lower-stakes version of Griselda, in a way. Hard times drive Nancy Botwin (Mary-Lousie Parker) into the marijuana trade. A widowed mother of two boys, this mom is willing to do anything for her family.

Netflix has added yet another limited series contender to the 2024 Emmys cycle.
On Friday, the streaming platform announced “Eric,” a six-episode miniseries starring Benedict Cumberbatch, will debut on May 30. “Eric” is the second major limited series Netflix added to its May lineup this week, following the news that the David E. Kelley show “A Man in Full” with Jeff Daniels will premiere on May 2.
The 2024 Emmys eligibility period ends on May 31.
Created by the acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan, “Eric” is described by Netflix as an “emotionally gripping story of a desperate father searching for his son in 1980s New York; an era when racism, homophobia, and classism were neglected, and prejudices surrounding the AIDS epidemic were at the cultural forefront.”

Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello’s seemingly perfect romance wasn’t meant to last. But after seven years of marriage, the couple announced their separation in July 2023—citing irreconcilable differences.
While the split came as a surprise to many, reports soon revealed the main reason: Vergara’s decision not to have more children. Her openness about the reason for their divorce – her not wanting more children – brought attention to Manganiello’s desire to become a father.

Netflix debuted the sixth season of Love Is Blind on Valentine’s Day, and the show captured a lot of viewers’ hearts — or at least their eyes.
The dating show easily led Nielsen’s original streaming series rankings for Feb. 12-18, drawing 907 million minutes of viewing time in the United States. It also finished third overall, behind library shows Bluey (1.17 billion minutes on Disney+) and Young Sheldon (1 billion on Netflix and Max). Those two swapped spots from the previous week.
Netflix’s romance One Day had 460 million minutes of watch time, a healthy 55 percent improvement over its opening. Apple TV+’s World War II drama Masters of the Air hit the rankings for the first time with 243 million minutes, with three fourths of that total coming from the episode that premiered Feb. 16.
Oppenheimer also had its streaming premiere on Peacock that week, leading the movies top 10 with 612 million minutes of watch time.

The week of the Super Bowl was a relatively light one for streaming in the United States — but that allowed a couple of shows to score solid positions in the top 10 despite relatively modest viewing times.
Netflix’s romance One Day, which premiered Feb. 8, was one of them — finishing fifth among original shows despite only gathering 296 million minutes of viewing in the U.S. for the week of Feb. 5-11. In the previous five weeks, the show in that slot had averaged 555 million minutes of watch time. Paramount+’s Halo also made its first appearance in the top 10, finishing fourth among originals with 354 million minutes as it opened its second season.
Only two shows, acquired stalwarts Young Sheldon (1.35 billion minutes on Netflix and Max) and Bluey (1.14 billion minutes on Disney+), eclipsed a billion minutes for the week. Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved into first place among originals with 765 million minutes of watch time.

“True Detective” was the fifth most-streamed title of the Feb. 5 to Feb. 11 viewing window, during which the fifth episode of “Night Country,” the anthology series’ fourth season, was released.
With 745 million minutes watched, the series saw a jump from the week before, when it ranked at No. 10 with 648 million minutes. These figures include streaming viewership of all of “True Detective,” not just “True Detective: Night Country,” though it’s clear that the season performed well in its own right based on data released when the season was still airing. It should also be noted that the Nielsen chart only accounts for streams on max, not linear viewers on HBO’s cable channel, where the network often sees approximately one-third of its viewership.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon’s hit animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” hit 19.9 million views from Feb. 26 to March 3, which earned it its second week at No. 1 on the Netflix Top 10. However, this marks a 6% decrease from the 21.2 million views it debuted with the week before, when it was only available for four days.
The viewership drop doesn’t bode well for the big-budget series, as Netflix’s largest titles typically grow in viewership between their debuts and their first full weeks of of availability. For example, Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the manga “One Piece” debuted with 18.5 million views in its first four days, then held No. 1 with 19.3 million views the week after.
With 5.1 million views, “Love Is Blind” was the second-most-watched TV title from Feb. 26 to March 3, during which the 10th episode of its sixth season was released. This is the season’s third week...

Netflix’s Griselda spent a second week as the top streaming title in the United States, according to Nielsen. It was one of three shows to snag more than a billion minutes of watch time for the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith also had a solid start for Amazon’s Prime Video, coming in just below the billion-minute mark. HBO’s True Detective also joined the rankings as it reached the midpoint of its fourth season.
Griselda, starring Sofia Vergara as the notorious drug lord, grabbed 1.73 billion minutes of viewing for the week, up about 9 percent from the previous seven days. The other two billion-minute shows were Young Sheldon (1.31 billion minutes on Netflix and Max) and Bluey (1.15 billion on Disney+).
Mr. and Mrs. Smith, starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, rang up 964 million minutes of watch time over three days after its Feb. 2 premiere (the full season...

“Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” Amazon Prime Video’s TV remake of the film of the same name, had a strong opening weekend. Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, the series debuted in fourth place on Nielsen’s streaming rankings with 964 million minutes watched in its first three days of availability.
It ranked only behind “Griselda,” the Sofia Vergara-led Netflix miniseries that hit 1.7 billion minutes watched between Jan. 29 and Feb. 4, its first full week of availability, as well as “Young Sheldon” and “Bluey,” frequent chart-toppers that were watched for 1.3 billion and 1.4 billion minutes, respectively.
“Griselda” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” were the only streaming originals to make the Top 10 during this viewing window. No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7 all went to chart regulars: “Grey’s Anatomy” with 958 million minutes watched, “The Big Bang Theory” with 750 million minutes watched and “NCIS” with 689 million minutes watched. The ninth-most-streamed title of the week was “This Is Us,...

The SAG Awards are huge — in Canada.
Netflix live-streamed the Screen Actors Guild’s event on Saturday, and though the awards show did not make the Top 10 in the U.S. (or globally), it did in exactly one country: Canada. As a matter of fact, it made the Top 9 (at number nine) there.
We don’t know exactly how the SAG Awards fared in the U.S. — not yet. Currently, all we know is that it had fewer than 2.1 million views in the U.S..
There will be a point at which time we will know exactly how the 2024 SAG Awards performed. Netflix is now performing a giant data dump twice per year sharing the hours viewed for any and every title that was streamed for at least 50,000 hours over six months. That will be easy for the SAG Awards, but don’t hold your breath until then — the January-June...

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” was the most-watched title on Netflix from Feb. 19 to Feb. 25, which included the series’ first five days of availability. Based on Nickelodeon’s animated hit series of the same name, the live-action adaptation reached 21.2 million views in its first four days of availability.
That puts it 15% above the September debut of Netflix’s most recently comparable title: “One Piece,” a live-action adaptation of the manga series of the same name, which was also the basis for a cult favorite anime.
It’s a good sign for Netflix that “Avatar” outpaced “One Piece’s” 18.5 million-view debut, though this was expected given the comparatively larger appetite for the “Avatar” IP in the United States. The series’ staying power will also be important in determining the franchise’s viability for Netflix. For comparison, “One Piece” took first place on the Netflix Top 10 three times in a row, and remained...
