Athletes are often in the public eye, gaining a following for being good at their chosen sport. Once they retire from their profession, some continue to grow their popularity through other ventures.
Many athletes turn to acting, whether through television advertisements and commercials like Coach Prime, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, Eli Manning, and Kevin Durant.
Other athletes like Travis Kelce, Pat McAfee, Deion Sanders (Prime), and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. do podcasts to attract a following.
Some celebrities do one-shot cameos, like Michael Jordan and LeBron James in Space Jam, Uncle Drew starring NBA star Kyrie Irving, Airplane! with Kareem Abdul Jabbar, and Blue Chips...

Although there are a few rare exceptions, most celebrities did not start as stars. They had standard jobs just like the rest of us.
Some even had extremely unusual jobs. Here are eleven examples.
Harrison Ford Was a Carpenter
You would be hard-pressed to find a person alive who doesn't know who Harrison Ford is.
The iconic actor starred in some of the most popular films ever, including the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises.
The star of 1923 and Shrinking turned 81 on July 13, 2024, but he seems to have no intention of slowing down. That's no surprise since he has been a hard worker for his entire life.

If the words “Zima,” “Pogs” and “Beanie Babies” mean nothing to you, then you might’ve been confused by some of the references in That ’90s Show. It’s also probably because you were born in a year that starts with 20-, like the entire new cast of the sitcom. But that doesn’t mean the series isn’t relatable for anyone watching.
“Even though I was never alive in the ’70s or the ’90s when [That ’70s Show] was being filmed,” says Callie Haverda, “I could relate to each of the characters.”
As Leia Forman, Haverda anchors the sitcom about a group of friends spending their summer in Point Place, Wisconsin in 1995. For the 12th and final day of Netflix is a Joke Fest on Sunday, the streamer turned to one of its biggest reality TV hits to bring the laughs, with a guys vs. girls battle of previous Love is Blind cast members.
Hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, the event — dubbed “Clash of the Casts” — saw alums of the dating show compete against each other Family Feud style, with the guys’ side comprised of Marshall Glaze (season four), Brett Brown (season four), Milton Johnson (season five) and Jimmy Presnell (season six), and the women’s side featuring Ad Smith (season six), Jessica Vestel (season six), Lydia Velez Gonzalez (season five) and Tiffany Pennywell (season four).
The two married couples on the stage — Brown and Pennywell, and Johnson and Gonzalez — opted not to go face-to-face directly, but talked some trash across from each other as the game began. Nick Lachey also...

That ‘90s Show will return with its second season on Netflix in 2024.
Netflix recently revealed a new release strategy for the new batch of episodes that will debut on the streaming platform later this year. Back in 1998, the world saw the first season of That '70s Show, the Fox sitcom that became definitive for the whole generation of back-then teens. Following the tricky lives of a group of six teenage friends of the fictional Point Place, Wisconsin, it attracted millions of viewers until it concluded with the eighth season in 2008.
The sitcom was so successful that its showrunners came up with the idea of the sequel That '90s Show, 10 episodes of which were released on Netflix last January, focusing on the children of the original characters. Thus, the main characters of the follow-up were Leia Forman, the daughter of Eric and Donna, and Jay Kelso, Michael and Jackie’s son.
The parents’ actors reprised their iconic roles, making small appearances in the show. When That '90s Show was renewed for a second season, fans started to hope they will see their favorite characters one more time,...

Exclusive: Topher Grace (That ’90s Show) and Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey: A New Era) have been tapped for roles opposite Academy Award nominee Mark Wahlberg in Flight Risk, the suspense thriller that Mel Gibson is helming for Lionsgate. The project marks Gibson’s first outing behind the camera since the Academy Award-nominated war drama Hacksaw Ridge for the same studio, as we previously reported.
In the suspense thriller, Wahlberg plays a pilot transporting an Air Marshal (Dockery), who’s been tasked with accompanying a fugitive (Grace) to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.
Pic is based on the 2020 Black List script by Jared Rosenberg. Davis Entertainment is producing alongside Gibson and Bruce Davey through their Icon Productions.

As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
I miss the days when Hollywood believed a great TV show could sustain an entire network. You know, back when television was still growing, and rising brands were built around groundbreaking, widely respected original programs. HBO was where you watched “The Sopranos,” AMC had “Mad Men,” and Netflix streamed “Orange Is the New Black.” Premium cable expanded to basic cable, which expanded to streaming, which expanded and expanded and expanded — almost always by touting the next great series as the best reason to tune in, sign up, or seek out a previously undiscovered channel in your satellite guide.

Netflix released a huge amount of streaming data Tuesday — viewing totals for more than 18,000 movies and seasons of TV for the first half of 2023.
Taken as a whole, it’s almost an overwhelming amount of information that speaks to Netflix’s ability to engage its huge subscriber base (just under 239 million for the end of the period covered in the data dump) — and maybe not a ton more? The stats presented are for total hours viewed, which is how Netflix measures engagement across its portfolio — but it’s also not the metric the streamer uses to order its weekly top 10 lists. For those, it uses the “view” formula of total watch time divided by running time, which somewhat levels the playing field for films and series with shorter run times. (And there are, of course, economic factors and other metrics that influence decision-making that the company will continue to keep in house.

Fighting for streaming residuals has been a hard-fought sticking point for the writers and actors negotiations, but bottom-line results of the new bonus threshold may be limited.
Less than 5 percent of Netflix originals in 2022 “would have triggered performance bonuses under the new contract between the Writers Guild of America and major studios,” Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw wrote on Sunday. The new deal between the WGA and the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) pays out performance bonuses if at least 20 percent of a streaming platform’s U.S. users consume a new original film or TV series within its first 90 days.
Shaw’s rate of 5 percent or less accounts for all Netflix original titles, he wrote — including foreign-language, animated, and unscripted programs that aren’t governed by the WGA deal. So while, say, docuseries “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” crosses the threshold with a 30 percent share of U.

Hanging out down the street, you could find the cast of That ’70s Show, Fox’s go-to sitcom from 1998-2006. Lasting eight seasons and even 200 episodes, That ’70s Show had an ensemble that found a charismatic group of characters in the Wisconsin burbs and making the most out of that basement. Making its debut on Fox in the fall of 1998, the show quickly became a cultural phenomenon. It made superstars out of much of its young cast, including Ashton Kutcher, Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Danny Masterson, Wilmer Valderrama, and even the adult leads, Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith (with Red Foreman a far cry from this role in Robocop).

It's been a long remarked-upon fact, both in the show and out of it, that most of Homer Simpson's life doesn't make any sense on "The Simpsons." He has a job as a nuclear safety inspector despite his lack of a college degree and is able to afford a fairly impressive house, two cars, and at least one major vacation a year. The story of how this all came to be has changed a lot over the decades, made even more complicated by the show's floating timeline. "Homer's Odyssey" in season 1 tells us Homer was promoted to the position after leading a protest against the power plant, whereas season 3's "I Married Marge" tells us he got the safety inspector job straight away, no promotion needed. Most of the show has told us Homer got the job with just a high school education, but season 19's "That '90s Show...

As the one-time That ’70s Show actor was for both of his trials on the criminal charges, Masterson was present in court today for the sentencing from Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo. Permitted to address the court, Masterson chose not to speak Thursday — though he did confer with defense lawyer Phillip Cohen just before sentencing began.
Speaking to Masterson directly of a “criminal justice system that you feel has failed you,” Judge Olmedo told him that “you are not the victim here … your actions 20 years ago were criminal.” Masterson was informed that because of his sentence, he will have to register as a sex offender upon parole or release — which the ex-network star told the court he understood.

San Diego Comic-Con is going to be a little different this year. Many studios had already dropped out of presenting, including Marvel, Sony, HBO, Universal, and Netflix, and now that SAG-AFTRA has joined the WGA on the picket lines, you can pretty much kiss any panel involving writers or actors goodbye. The official Comic-Con schedule has been updated with a list of cancelled panels, which unfortunately includes Dune: Part Two, The Boys spin-off series Gen V, Amazon’s The Wheel of Time, Lionsgate’s upcoming The Strangers trilogy, and more.

Riot grrrl pioneers Bratmobile have reunited for their first live shows in over 20 years. Last Wednesday (June 28th), they played a secret show at Zebulon in Los Angeles, and on Sunday (July 2nd), they headlined the Mosswood Meltdown festival in Oakland. Check out videos of their performances below.
The band’s appearance at Zeublon last week was unannounced, and the gig served as a “warmup” of sorts for their set at Mosswood. Nonetheless, Bratmobile — who were joined by Tiger Trap’s Rose Melberg — ran through an exciting set that featured classics and covers, like a rendition of The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb.” For that song, they were joined onstage by upcoming rock outfit, The Linda Lindas.
The Linda Lindas joined Bratmobile onstage for Mosswood as well, where the band delivered an almost identical set to the one Zeublon witnessed, including the high-energy cover of “Cherry Bomb.” Bratmobile first announced they would...
