Former Black Midi singer-guitarist Geordie Greep takes stock of contemporary masculinity with his first solo album, The New Sound. Where Black Midi constructed elaborate worlds to tell stories about boxers and soldiers on albums like 2022’s Hellfire, Greep trains his focus on the type of men who worship at the altars of celebrity influencers like Andrew Tate and Jordan Peterson here, going so far as to adopt their voices and stick with them long enough to show the cracks in their pumped-up egos.
Greep writes lyrics by the paragraph and sings them frantically, as though he’s terrified that a song will run out before he gets to say everything on his mind. “Blues” savagely dissects a man who “should pay [a beggar] to follow you around and play your theme” before directing him to confront the inevitability of decay and death, yet the narrator sounds as jerky as his target.

Just days after black midi announced their indefinite hiatus, vocalist and guitarist Geordie Greep has announced his debut solo album titled, The New Sound, out October 4th. He’s also shared the album’s first single “Holy Holy” and a batch of 2025 tour dates.
Greep wrote many of the songs on The New Sound in between black midi shows throughout the last two years. Over 30 different musicians participated in the sessions for The New Sound, which was recorded in both London and São Paulo — Greep says in a statement that much of the album was re-recorded in Brazil “with local musicians pulled together at the last minute” and finished off in London.

“It was the first time I have had no one to answer to,” says Greep about the new album. “And with every impulse I had, I was able to completely follow it through to its conclusion.

Black Midi, the London group whose brand of noise-rock and prog-punk weirdness earned them the title of “the most exciting new band in Britain” early in their career, has apparently called it quits.
Fans of the band learned the band’s fate Saturday on social media, where singer/guitarist Geordie Greep was hosting an Instagram Live. When asked about the status of Black Midi’s new album — the follow-up to 2022’s acclaimed Hellfire — Greep alerted them, “No more black midi” and “It’s over.”

What's the best Disney villain song? I love Scar's devious rallying call "Be Prepared" from "The Lion King." For the feminine villains, "Mother Knows Best" from "Tangled" (sung by Tony winner Donna Murphy as Gothel) is deliciously theatrical.
Ultimately, still, the crown can't go anywhere but to "Hellfire" from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," as Claude Frollo (the late Tony Jay) sings before a searing fireplace about his lust for Romani "witch" Esmeralda (Demi Moore). Jay's mellifluous baritone was like no other — the actor's voice was so powerful it lifted the song with its echoes.
Now, the "Hunchback" soundtrack is nothing to sneer at, but "Hellfire" is on another level of daring ambition. "Out There" (by Tom Hulce as Quasimodo) is the "yearning song" seen in many a Disney movie, a la "Part of Your World" from "The Little Mermaid" or "Belle's Reprise" from "Beauty and the Beast." Exclusive: Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new Anchor Bay Entertainment with an eye on genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.
“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”
In Lionsgate’s acquisition of Starz in December 2016, the studio absorbed the North American branches of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Anchor Bay Entertainment trademark was up for acquisition so Zambeck and Katz took the opportunity to acquire it. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t include the previous label’s library.

At its LA premiere last week, Osage community members who worked on Martin Scorsese’s “Killers Of The Flower Moon” expressed reservations about its depiction of the Osage Nation tribe. But their feedback isn’t nearly as harsh as how “Reservation Dogs” star Devery Jacobs feels about the new film. THR reports that the Indigenous actress (of Mohawk descent) has scathing words for Scorsese’s latest, and she took to social media to declare them.

The news never stops, but for Jake Tapper, it does occasionally share time with other creative pursuits.
Today, what’s lured him away from the CNN studio (temporarily) is the promotion of his new book. He’s seated on the patio of The Pendry, a West Hollywood social club meets hotel, drinking the first of several iced coffees, dressed casually — comparatively speaking, for a person whose day job requires suits pressed within an inch of their life — in a breezy button-down shirt and Air Jordans. He arrived early for the breakfast interview, due in part to the habits of a longtime live news anchor, but also because he’s on East Coast time, rising hours before most of Los Angeles.

In the early ’90s, game designer David Brevik took the beloved but financially struggling computer role-playing game (Crpg) genre and stripped it for parts. No elaborate character backstories, no morality system, and no dice roll-based decision-making. In Brevik’s words, he wanted to make an RPG that let you “get in and start smashing things.”
It was a sacrilegious idea to those who saw traditional RPGs as the backbone of the computer gaming scene. Appropriately, Brevik called his idea “Diablo.”
Released in 1997, Diablo was a true game-changer. It boiled the complex Crpg down to its purest form. Pick a class, unleash devastating attacks with the click of a mouse, collect random pieces of tiered loot, and don’t stop until you see the sun. Nothing beats a good villain theme. Yet despite being the world's dominant media franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn't produced many memorable character themes (I'll defer an explanation to Every Frame a Painting), and there are even fewer villains with a signature leitmotif.
That doesn't mean they don't have unofficial villain songs, though. In a recent interview for the upcoming issue of Total Film, which hits shelves next Thursday, Jonathan Majors revealed he brought his own theme for Kang the Conqueror to the set of "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania." While director Peyton Reed and star Paul Rudd were listening to '80s New Romantic bands, Majors was getting into the mindset of a conqueror with the rap song "9mm." A track on David Banner's 2008 album "The Greatest Story Ever Told," the song features Akon, Lil Wayne, and Snoop Dogg.
The lyrics are just one part of the sound in "9mm,...

End Of The Road is a festival that keeps its promises. The cultured leftfield shindig – where croquet tournaments break out in forest glades and peacocks roam the trimmed lawns of Dorset’s Larmer Tree Gardens, unbothered by the experimental folk, rock, rap and electronic tomfoolery floating across the site – has been promising a weekend headlined by indie giants Pixies and Bright Eyes since 2020. Covid scuppered that event, and post-pandemic travel issues forced the 2021 bill to become more UK-based. But this year, Eotr puts its music where its mouth is at last, with plenty more curveballs thrown in to keep this crowd of discerning alternative music fans pleasingly off-balance.
The opening Thursday night bill is a brain-rattling case in point. On the main Woods Stage, LA’s Sudan Archives sets out to invent jig-hop, interspersing psychosexual ambient raps with ruined snippets of Irish folk played on the fiddle she brandishes throughout.
