The Santa Barbara International Film Festival will honor Angelina Jolie with the Maltin Modern Master Award at its 40th annual edition on February 5, 2025.

Established in 1995, the Modern Master Award was created to honor filmmakers who have changed the movie industry through significant contributions and impact. The award was renamed the Maltin Modern Master Award in 2015 to honor long-time Sbiff moderator and film critic Leonard Maltin.

“Angelina Jolie makes bold choices, both as an actress and as a director,” Maltin said. “She sets the bar high in both disciplines and always comes through. I look forward to reviewing her career with her in Santa Barbara!”

Angelina Jolie is set to receive the TIFF Tribute Award in Impact Media at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival.

The Oscar-winning actress will be honored on Sept. 8 at the TIFF fundraiser, while also bringing her latest film, Without Blood, to Toronto for a world premiere. Written, directed and produced by Jolie, Without Blood is a war drama based on the Alessandro Baricco novel of the same name and tells the story of a girl’s quest for revenge and healing during a time of conflict. Salma Hayek Pinault and Demián Bichir have lead roles.

Exclusive: NBC’s Chicago Fire has cast KaDee Strickland for a recurring role in Season 13. The new season begins Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Searchlight Pictures has released the official teaser trailer for A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan. The film, set in the influential New York music scene of the early ’60s, will be released in theaters this December.

A Complete Unknown follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts – his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation – culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.

The movie was directed by James Mangold, whose credits include Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Ford v Ferrari, Logan, The Wolverine, 3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line, Identity, Girl, Interrupted, and Cop Land.

Netflix recently announced it would be investing $2.5 billion into South Korean programming. Before Squid Game season 2 comes down the pike, however, the first seeds of that investment will bear fruit for Netflix in May 2023.

Netflix’s list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by the May 12 release of Korean series Black Knight. Set “in a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution,” this show will follow world-saving deliverymen known as “Black Knights.” Other international offerings this month include Japanese sumo drama Sanctuary on May 4 and Spanish crime thriller Muted on May 19.

Netflix’s domestic TV options this month include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on May 4. That will be followed by post-apocalyptic animated comedy Mulligan on May 12 and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV debut Fubar on May 25. And for those hoping for “triples,” I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson premieres on May 30.

On the movie side of things, Netflix has an unusually busy month.

As the calendar turns to May, the world’s largest streaming service is set to introduce a slew of new titles to the service. Perhaps most anticipated will be “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” when it debuts on May 4. There are a number of genre series in TV history that were sadly, and famously, canceled all-too-soon. Series Mania, the annual series jamboree at Lille, France, has revealed 21 high-end series from 19 countries that will be part of its Forum Exclusives strand.

Seven of these titles are world premieres, a new record since the creation of the Forum in 2013, Laurence Herszberg, founder and general director of Series Mania (Aug. 26 – Sept. 2), and Francesco Capurro, director of Series Mania Forum (Aug. 30 – Sept. 1), said on Thursday.

The 21 Forum Exclusives have been selected by Series Mania’s artistic director Frédéric Lavigne and his team and will be available to screen exclusively to registered participants at the on-site screening room and on the Series Mania Digital platform from Aug. 30 through Sept. 18. These high-end worldwide series are produced and/or distributed by leading international distributors including Banijay Rights, Beta Films, About Premium Content, Keshet International, Newen Connect, Snd, Zodiac Pictures and Inter Medya.

Turkish TV dramas continue to make inroads around the world, primarily in linear and pay-tv slots congenial to these sophisticated soaps, which are generally sold in packages of 100 commercial hours per show. But bolder new titles in six-10 episode formats are increasingly being made for streaming platform play.

“The market is hot: we are producing like crazy despite the pandemic,” says Ahmet Ziyalar, chief of Istanbul-based sales and production company Inter Medya, who notes “it’s really hard to find available talents.”

Prices for Turkish product dropped some in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, he points out, “because traditional broadcasters lost their advertising revenues.”

But ad intake is now starting to pick up. “We are signing more contracts,” says Ziyalar, who adds that due to lower prices “his revenues are the same” as before the coronavirus crisis.

The SAG Awards have previewed nine of the last 10 Supporting Actress Oscar winners. And since the guild started giving out prizes in 1995, it has foreseen 69% of the eventual Oscar champs in this category. The nominees are often just as similarly aligned.

The 2021 SAG nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Yuh-jung Youn (“Minari”), and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”). HBO Max has ordered a two-part documentary about the life and death of actress Brittany Murphy from Blumhouse Television, the streaming service said Thursday.

Per its official description, the untitled doc “presents an in-depth, intimate character portrait exploring the life and career and mysterious circumstances surrounding the tragic death of ’90s actress and rising star, Brittany Murphy.” HBO Max says “the series will go beyond the conspiracy theories and headlines, featuring new interviews by those closest to Brittany and new archival footage.”

The star of films like “Clueless,” “8 Mile,” “Uptown Girls” and “Girl, Interrupted,” Murphy went into cardiac arrest and died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Dec. 20, 2009, after reportedly collapsing at the Los Angeles home she shared with her husband, Simon Monjack. Her official cause of death was ruled pneumonia.
