Medical shows are always popular with audiences; the same is true of most comedy series.
St. Denis Medical is a new comedy set to premiere in 2024, providing a good mix of both.
In the grand tradition of such shows as Superstore, the mockumentary-style show promises a lot of laughs. Here's what we know about it so far.

St. Denis Medical is a new mockumentary sitcom coming to NBC in the fall of 2024.
The sitcom is expected to be similar to not only Superstore but also The Office in terms of the style of humor it includes.

The 12-episode fifth season of Lone Star will be used to launch Fox’s two new drama series, delayed to next season by the strikes, Rescue Hi-Surf and Doc. The network is so high on the former, it just ordered seven more episodes, bringing the lifeguard drama’s freshman season to 19 episodes.

In the aftermath of Must-See TV, there was a stretch of time when it seemed like NBC was doing comedy outreach for TV critics, constantly renewing shows like Parks and Recreation and The Good Place and Superstore not because they had huge audiences, but because the audiences they possessed were fervent and vocal.
With the initial success of the Night Court reboot and the cancelation of the ostensibly edgier or more niche — some, like me, might say “better,” but to each their own — American Auto and Grand Crew, it wouldn’t be unreasonable for NBC to think that the way forward is broader and more traditional comedies.
If NBC’s new Extended Family is an example of that way forward, there are, at least, worse fates. This is a multi-camera family sitcom of the most traditional type, with a premise so thin it’s barely a premise at all. In...

Exclusive: Tye White (American Auto) and Jason O’Mara (The Man in the High Castle) are set for key recurring roles on the upcoming second season of CBS drama series Fire Country.
The drama stars Max Thieriot as Bode Donovan, a young convict seeking redemption and a shortened prison sentence by joining a prison release firefighting program in Northern California, where he and other inmates are partnered with elite firefighters to extinguish massive, unpredictable wildfires across the region. It’s a high-risk, high-reward assignment, and the heat is turned up when Bode is assigned to the program in his rural hometown, where he was once a golden all-American son – until his troubles began. Five years ago, Bode burned down everything in his life, leaving town with a big secret. Now he’s back, with the rap sheet of a criminal and the audacity to believe in a chance for redemption with Cal Fire.

‘After Midnight’: CBS Sets Showrunners & Team For ‘The Late Late Show With James Corden’ Replacement
CBS is making its latest moves in late-night.
The network has set the showrunners, head writer and exec producing team for After Midnight, its reboot of Comedy Central series @midnight, that will replace The Late Late Show with James Corden.
It comes as the series, which is set to air in the 12:30am slot in early 2024, is narrowing down the field for a host. We hear that Taylor Tomlinson, X Mayo and Ricky Velez are the three in contention and the trio did a test shoot last Wednesday. A decision is expected soon. CBS declined to comment on the host situation.
Jack Martin, who was the showrunner of all four seasons of Comedy Central’s @midnight, which originally ran between 2013 and 2017, will serve as co-showrunner alongside Eric Pierce, who has exec produced series including CBS’ The Challenge: USA and The Wheel.

CBS is reportedly nearing the selection of a new host to take over the time slot previously occupied by James Corden’s Late Late Show. In line with their earlier announcement, CBS has opted not to continue the same show with a different host but to introduce a revamped edition of the popular Comedy Central game show, @midnight. As reported by Puck News, CBS’s CEO, George Cheeks, is presently in the process of evaluating three potential hosts: X Mayo, a former Daily Show writer and American Auto actress; Ricky Velez, a stand-up comedian, and Taylor Tomlinson, a comedian, and writer. The exact nature of CBS’s rebooted version remains uncertain, but it’s worth recalling how Comedy Central ran the show from 2013 to 2017. In each episode, a panel of comedians engaged in witty banter about internet culture and the day’s headlines. The contestant in third place was eliminated before the final round,...

Cruel Angels Past Sundown: "New Mexico Territory, 1882: She comes to the Klein ranch at sunset, a strange naked pregnant woman dragging a cavalry saber. Annette Klein and her husband have built peace between their marriage and secret relations beyond, but their serenity dies in bloodshed tonight through a cannibalistic demon and a mad preacher.
Annette barely escapes the bloodbath to the nearby town of Low’ s Bend, where she might find safety with a shotgun-toting barkeep, two no-nonsense boarding room ladies, and the gunslinging bounty hunter who’ s captured Annette’ s heart.
But hell is at her heels. If she’ s going to survive until dawn, she’ ll have to forget everything she knows about peace and mercy, and face a hollow malevolence more ancient and ruthless than she’ s ever imagined."
Written by Hailey Piper, Cruel Angels Past Sundown will be available on July 25th from Death’s Head Press!

What’s NBC nowadays?
Even before the ongoing writers strike scrambled the network’s fall schedule, its identity — historically quite strong as a place for chewy, grown-up dramas and chic, cerebral sitcoms — had seemed hazy. Promising comedies, the sort that might have grown to fulfill the role recently played by “30 Rock” or “Superstore,” got unceremoniously booted from the air after barely a chance to thrive; new dramas, from “Ordinary Joe” to “The Thing About Pam,” seemed painfully undistinguished.
It’s been a tough few years. And as much as the departure of Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, a career TV executive previously known for her work at Warner Bros. Television, is just latest bit of media industry consolidation, it’s also a moment to observe that the legacy network and its corporate siblings have struggled to find a way forward. In the years...

When TV academy voters sit down to fill out their 2023 Emmy nominations ballots, they have to consider 95 shows for Best Comedy Series; this is down by 23 contenders from last year. After six years of there being no restrictions on the amount of entrants they could vote for, each member’s selections can now not exceed the number of eventual nominations in a given category, which, in this case, will be eight.
Reigning Best Comedy Series winner “Ted Lasso” is seeking a third consecutive victory, but five of its seven 2022 rivals can put a stop to its streak. Those previously nominated shows that also aired during the eligibility period of June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023 are “Abbott Elementary,” “Barry,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” and 2018 champ “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The two contenders from last year missing from this ballot because they did not return in time...

Hours after NBC made decisions on the bulk of its bubble comedy fare, ABC has passed on nearly all of its remaining pilots.
The Disney-backed broadcaster has passed on dramas The Hurt Unit and Judgment as well as comedies Keeping It Together (formerly Drop-Off) and Public Defenders, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Of the four drama and two comedy pilots that ABC developed this season, only the Good Doctor spinoff, The Good Lawyer, remains in contention. (Kaitlin Olson drama High Potential was previously ordered to series.)
Also remaining on the bubble are comedy Home Economics (awaiting word on a fourth season) and The Rookie spinoff, Feds (awaiting word on season two). Sources say producers ABC Signature is expected to shop medical drama The Hurt Unit, which counts Ben McKenzie and Michelle Ortiz among its cast.
Reps for ABC declined comment.

NBC has given a series order to “St. Denis Medical,” a comedy series hailing from “Superstore” and “American Auto” creator Justin Spitzer alongside Eric Ledgin, who also wrote and executive produced on both shows.
Per the official logline, the series is “a mockumentary about an underfunded, understaffed Oregon hospital where the dedicated doctors and nurses try their best to treat patients while maintaining their own sanity.”
In her first role since May’s conclusion of “The Goldbergs” on ABC, Wendi McLendon-Covey stars as Joyce, St. Denis’ executive director and former oncological surgeon who has big dreams for the future of the hospital, though those dreams are not currently being realized. And as reported exclusively by Variety, Allison Tolman will play Alex, the supervising nurse in St. Denis’ emergency department who is dedicated to providing excellent care to her patients, often sacrificing her personal life to maintain her high standards.

It will be a quick return to network primetime for Wendi McLendon-Covey. NBC has picked up to series St. Denis Medical, its single-camera workplace comedy starring The Goldbergs alumna and veteran David Alan Grier.
This marks the first 2023 NBC pilot to get a series order as the network again shifted most — in this case all — pickup decisions to after the upfronts.
The first pickup is not a surprise: St. Denis Medical, written by the Superstore and American Auto duo of Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin and to directed by Superstore’s Ruben Fleischer, was an early front-runner, getting enthusiastic reception in network screenings.

As ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” continues to be hailed as a revelatory comedy series that puts classic networks back on the TV awards map, attention should also be paid to the other great non-streaming sitcoms of its age. Take, for instance, “American Auto,” which, after two strong seasons, has proven a worthy successor to past NBC workplace comedies like “The Office” and “Superstore.” At a time when increasingly dark dramedies dominate much of the television landscape, it’s important to keep part of the spotlight on feel-good laffers, and “American Auto” stands as proof that there is more than one such model on the lot.
“American Auto” primarily takes place in the Detroit corporate offices of fictional car company Payne Motors, which has recently fallen under the control of ill-equipped CEO Katherine Hastings (a perfectly cast Ana Gasteyer). With each passing episode, her central goal of at least keeping pace...

NBC’s 2023 fall lineup will include two new dramas and one new comedy, as well as new seasons of The Voice, Night Court, and Quantum Leap. The three Chicago shows – Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. – return to their Wednesday night time slots, and Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu are back with new seasons on Thursday nights.
The network hasn’t made any decisions on the status of American Auto, Grand Crew, and Young Rock, but did confirm new unscripted series Deal or No Deal Island and Untitled America’s Got Talent Series will premiere midseason. New seasons of Law & Order: Organized Crime, La Brea, Magnum P.I., and Lopez vs. Lopez will join the primetime lineup midseason.

Viewers won’t get six hours of Dick Wolf dramas in the fall of the 2023-24 season. NBC has released its fall schedule, revealing which new shows are joining the lineup — Jesse L. Martin’s The Irrational, Shanola Hampton’s Found (originally part of this season’s midseason lineup), and Jon Cryer’s Extended Family — and those being held for the midseason, including a couple returning favorites. The network also announced that it had renewed Lopez vs. Lopez and Password for second seasons. Not returning until the midseasons are Law & Order: Organized Crime (Found is taking its slot), La Brea, Magnum P.I., Lopez vs. Lopez, and Password. New unscripted shows to come include an Untitled America’s Got Talent Series and Deal or No Deal Island. NBC will also debut an epic 10-part tentpole event series, The Americas, narrated by Tom Hanks. Plus, the ...

NBC is the second broadcast to announce its plans for the fall, and unlike CBS, some significant changes are on the horizon.
Quantum Leap is vacating its Mondays at 10 p.m. slot and will move one night later to Tuesdays.
Replacing the reboot is The Irrational, a new drama series.
Night Court will remain on Tuesdays but will lead into Extended Family.
Wednesdays remain unchanged, with the One Chicago franchise remaining intact into next season -- assuming the writers strike doesn't continue for more than a few months.
Law & Order: Organized Crime is being held for midseason, and the new drama series Found will get the Svu lead out.
The series is very compatible with Svu.
We got to watch two episodes, and we'll share more details on that one nearer to the premiere.
If the strike is not hashed out in the coming months, NBC does have options.

Freshman drama “Quantum Leap” is taking a quantum leap to Tuesdays, as NBC unveiled a mostly strike-proof fall schedule that features three new series (two dramas and a comedy) and a crowded midseason bench.
The Peacock net’s lineup is heavy as always on football and Dick Wolf: And even more so on the pigskin, as NBC’s new deal to cover Big Ten football kicks in with a new Saturday showcase. But with few changes in store, the network will rely on established series to launch its freshman entries.
NBC will use unscripted mainstay “The Voice” on Mondays to launch the new Jesse L. Martin starrer “The Irrational,” based on author Dan Ariely’s “Predictably Irrational,” at 10 p.m. On Tuesday, the hit “Night Court” revival will continue to lead off the night and help launch the new comedy “Extended Family,” starring Jon Cryer and Donald Faison, and from Mike O’Malley,...

The Lopez family is sticking around on NBC. Lopez vs. Lopez has been renewed for a second season.
Lopez vs. Lopez began its broadcast run airing on Friday nights where it drew strong ratings for its time slot. In April, NBC announced that the final three episodes of the season would air on Tuesday, taking over the American Auto slot after that show wrapped its second season. With the move, Lopez vs. Lopez scored the coveted lead-in from Night Court, in an effort to get even more eyeballs on the series as NBC made plans for its 2023/24 season.

The first season has averaged about 2M total viewers per episode and a 0.27 rating among the 18-49 demographic. According to Nielsen, it is the highest-indexing broadcast series for English-dominant Hispanic households. After 35 days of delayed viewing, Lopez vs. Lopez has the highest portion of long-tail viewing among all NBC comedies on Peacock.

NBC has yet to make decisions about three of its comedies.
American Auto, Grand Crew and Young Rock all remain on the bubble after the network unveiled its fall schedule with these three shows absent from fall and midseason.
NBC said “decisions are yet to be made” on the trio.
American Auto comes from Superstore creator Justin Spitzer. The series premiered its second season in January and it ended its 13-episode run in April.
Starring Ana Gasteyer, Harriet Dyer and Jon Barinholtz, American Auto hails from Spitzer and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Written by Spitzer, American Auto is set at the headquarters of a major American automotive company in Detroit, where a floundering group of executives try to rediscover the company identity amidst a rapidly changing industry.
Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington, Tye White and X Mayo also star.
Spitzer executive produces via his Spitzer Holding Company with Kapital’s Kaplan.

NBC has finally released its schedule for the 2023 to 2024 TV season, and this time around new series from Jon Cryer and Tom Hanks are leading the charge alongside network staples. NBC’s fall schedule will include three new scripted series as well as a new night of Big Ten Football.
“Lopez vs. Lopez” and “Law and Order: Organized Crime” will also officially be returning, though they’re not set to premiere until midseason. According to Jeff Bader, President of Entertainment Program Planning Strategy for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, “Organized Crime” is currently undergoing a showrunner change and does not currently have a showrunner. “It actually is best for the show to have some time to regroup, and it’ll come on as part of the Thursday lineup later in the season,” Bader told TheWrap.
