We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

There are a lot of reasons a movie’s release date can be pushed back, from Covid-19 restrictions to contract disputes. Although a continuous timeline seems ideal for everyone involved, things don’t always go as planned. These obstacles test creative teams’ resilience as much as they test audiences’ patience.
Pre-production, filming, editing, and release can be a seamless transition but that often isn’t the case. There are times a movie collects dust, tucked away for months and sometimes years after shooting. Other times its creation is interrupted during filming or even before production has begun, inching the project away from the finish line. Regardless of why a movie gets delayed, one thing can be agreed upon by any production crew: getting things right is hard sometimes. The logistics that go into crafting a film that the audience hopefully considers a work of art is challenging. Unfortunately for filmmakers,...

A month away from the June 30 expiration of SAG-AFTRA’s collective bargaining agreement with the AMPTP, indie films are in a panic.
With SAG’s negotiating committee calling for a strike authorization vote, producers are stuck in an infinite loop of existential crisis. They’re toggling between a scramble to get cameras rolling, make minute-to-minute decisions about continuing prep work, or making the call to push start dates until — fingers crossed — a strike is averted.
“I’m on an emergency call almost every day about whether to push a movie, whether to keep spending money and see what happens,” one entertainment lawyer told IndieWire. “Independently financed movies, it’s very hard. These are real people putting in real money. It’s not like a studio isn’t real money, but it’s different kinds of risks.”

There’s no denying that making a film is difficult.
Not only does getting a story from script to screen cost millions, but it also requires both cast and crew to devote years to a singular project.
Despite filmmaking being a labour of love, there are still occasions when a director – the person who arguably spends the most amount of time working on a film – can dislike the final results.
The majority of cases stem from studio interference: when filmmakers have to make changes to their work due to creative differences with the financiers.
Other common causes for dissatisfaction are when directors are rushed into a project (mainly sequels), when they regret an early artistic decision, or – in Steven Soderbergh’s case – when they knew 15 minutes in there was a problem but continued anyway.
Below are 20 directors who dislike their own films, including David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick and a few Marvel directors.

India’s Clapstem Entertainment Sets EFM Screening for ‘Band of Maharajas,’ Reveals Slate (Exclusive)
India’s Clapstem Entertainment, led by director-producer Girish Malik and producer Amardeep S. Reen, has a slate that includes “Band of Maharajas,” which screened at Berlin’s European Film Market.
Malik’s directorial debut, ecological drama “Jal” (2013), was in Busan’s New Currents competition. His sophomore feature, refugee and sports themed “Torbaaz” (2020), headlined by Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, was a Netflix original film.
His third film, “Band of Maharajas,” is the story of three clueless young folk musicians from a remote border village in India who undertake an unplanned and unusual journey to Pakistan that changes their lives and music. The film has the tagline “While countries divide us, music unites us.”
Next up is docu-drama “Om Namah Shivay,” which commences production in March. The film will delve into the Eastern philosophy of how Hindu god Shiva and the mantra Om Namah Shivay can bring harmony across the world and...

Keke Palmer and Sacha Baron Cohen have boarded “Super Toys,” the next film from “American Hustle” and “Amsterdam” director David O. Russell, sources have confirmed to IndieWire.
News of the film comes ahead of the European Film Market, which runs from February 16-22. FilmNation Entertainment will handle international sales of the feature during the market, a representative told IndieWire, while CAA Media Rights represents the film’s U.S. rights. Charles Roven and Matthew Budman serve as the producers of the project.
Russell will write and direct the feature, which stars Palmer and Cohen as 70’s toy sales reps “on a life and death mission to save themselves, their marriage and their live-wire twelve-year-old daughter, on the road in middle America,” per the logline.
“Super Toys” will be Russell’s 11th feature film, and follows last year’s “Amsterdam.” That ensemble comedy starring Christian Bale, John David Washington, and Margot Robbie...

Ever since 2011’s The Fighter, David O. Russell has been a critical and awards favorite, with a total of 12 Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. Now, with the supreme box office flop of his latest movie, Amsterdam, his streak may be over.
Amsterdam hit #3 with just 6.5 million this past weekend. According to Deadline, with a budget of 80 million, a projected worldwide gross of 35 million and another 70 million going into prints and advertising, Amsterdam is looking to lose around 100 million.
The growing cost of Amsterdam has been attributed to a number of factors, including a location change and a delay in the movie’s production due to Covid-19, thus ballooning the budget up more than 60 from its initial greenlit 50 million cost.
The numbers can get a little complicated, but what’s simple is that people simply didn’t show up at the movie theaters to see Amsterdam. Is it because there was no previous property attached?...

Throughout his many career ups-and-downs, five-time Oscar-nominated director David O. Russell has carved out a place for himself with a series of singularly eccentric, screwy films. Let’s take a look back at all eight of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958, Russell made his filmmaking debut with the incest comedy “Spanking the Monkey” (1994), which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and brought his Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay victories at the Independent Spirit Awards. The screwball farce “Flirting with Disaster” (1996) quickly followed, which earned him additional writing and directing bids at the Indie Spirits. He achieved a huge critical and commercial success with the Gulf War satire “Three Kings” (1999), for which he competed at the Writers Guild of America in Best Original Screenplay.
He received a more muted response with “I Heart Huckabees” (2004), an existential ensemble comedy that became infamous for leaked...

This article contains spoilers for Better Call Saul through season 6 episode 3.
Better Call Saul is one of the best shows in television history for a myriad of reasons. From the impeccable performances to the brilliant call backs to Breaking Bad, the spinoff has etched its name as one of the most artistic endeavors ever put on the small screen.
Of all the elements that makes the show special, however, the cinematography has got to be at the top of the list. Using a variety of Pov shots, pan-outs to the New Mexico skies, and brilliant uses of lighting, there is nothing quite like the type of filmmaking that is used on Better Call Saul.
With that in mind, let’s discuss the 15 best shots in the show below, most of which are sourced and compiled from the Better Call Saul (In Frames) Twitter account. Tell us if we missed any of your favorites!

Nailed It has created its own niche in the television market, so much so that I can’t imagine the show coming to an end any time soon! There are so many tweaks and alterations season by season, to make the show different enough to keep it exciting but still in the same realm as the other seasons.
For those who are not familiar with the series, Nailed It is a show which invites completely novice bakers on to attempt the most complex bakes you have ever seen; which leads to some very disastrous and hilarious results. The point of the show is that the cakes are bad but they are looking for the best of the worst bakers! After years of frustration with the course of the country’s politics, Poland’s labor minister has all but thrown in the towel. An idealist at heart, she’s ready to resign when an unexpected controversy opens the door for her to rise to the very top of the political establishment. The only thing standing in her way? A fiery, rebellious, openly gay chef who’s suddenly captured the minister’s heart. With her political fortunes hanging in the balance, she has to choose between her career and love—even though she manages to win at both in the end.
“Politics of Love” is perhaps not the most conventional romantic comedy to come from Poland, a country whose president, Andrzej Duda, has in recent years decried homosexuality as an “ideology” and made anti-lgbtq rhetoric a central tenet of his ruling Law and Justice Party.

Nailed It: Season 4 is a high energy show that shows a side to amateur baking that we, as an audience, never really get to see – one that will have you all shouting at the screen and rolling in laughter!
If you have not heard of this show before, Nailed It is a series which features completely amateur bakers taking part in the show to try and bake some of the most complicated and difficult cakes I have ever seen, with the hopes of winning some cash. Due to the contestant’s lack of skills it leads to some very hilarious scenes – and cakes – at the end of the show. I think too many times we hear of people who have never baked before being able to make the most wonderful cakes so its nice to see the actual struggle in baking.

After landing three Best Director Oscar nominations and two for screenwriting in the last decade, “Silver Linings Playbook” director David O. Russell is heading into 2020 having already signed Margot Robbie and Christian Bale as the leads in his next project at New Regency.
Details are scant on the new movie, but Variety reports that Russell would direct from his own script. Collider reports that Michael B. Jordan has also joined the cast of the film, which revolves around a doctor and lawyer who form an unlikely partnership, while Russell is also courting Michael Shannon, Mike Myers, and frequent collaborator Robert De Niro. He’s eyeing an April start for production.
De Niro and Russell worked together on “Silver Linings Playbook,” “American Hustle,” and “Joy.”
Also coming aboard is Matthew Budman, who executive produced Russell’s most recent effort, 2015’s Jennifer Lawrence-starrer “Joy” as well as the 2013 black comedy “American Hustle.

David O. Russell celebrates his 61st birthday on August 20, 2019. Throughout his many career ups-and-downs, the five-time Oscar-nominated director has carved out a place for himself with a series of singularly eccentric, screwy films. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at all eight of his films, ranked worst to best.

Hollywood legend Nicolas Cage is at his gonzo, gurning, goofball best as an American man on a mission to Pakistan to single-handedly mount a war on terror, in the most outrageously hilarious culture clash comedy to hit the screen since Borat, and directed by the comedy genius behind that film, Larry Charles. It’s made all the more berserk and bizarre by the fact that it is a true story.
Synopsis:
Eccentric ex-convict Gary Faulkner has a vision from God, telling him he must single-handedly mount a war on terror. Faulkner, armed with a single samurai sword bought from a home shopping channel, travels from the Us to Pakistan to embark on his highly dangerous and foolhardy mission – where he runs into bemused locals, irate CIA men, and even America’s most wanted, Osama bin Laden himself.
Army of One is available to rent on VOD and Digital HD from 19th December.

His executive producer credits include Accidental Love, Father Of Invention, and last year's box office dud In The Heart Of The Sea, but none of the investors he's charged with swindling appear to have been involved in the movie business. After the critical misfire that was “I Heart Huckabees” and the infamously troubled production of what would eventually become known as “Accidental Love,” few could have predicted David O. Russell’s second act. Starting with 2010’s “The Fighter,” not only has Russell found a new troupe of actors that loves working with him (including what is now essentially his muse, à la Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese, in the form of Jennifer Lawrence), but he’s also found great success during awards season. In ten days, Russell’s latest awards-season salvo, the Lawrence-starring “Joy,” will open during a crowded holiday season, and the studio is throwing the marketing machine into high gear to compete. If you’ve found yourself wondering what exactly “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner has been up to since the ending of his show, it turns out that he’s become the president of Russell’s fan club.

David O. Russell's career can be divided right down the middle at this point between the movies he made before the horrible nail-related head injury and the movies he made after it. Now, I'm not implying he had a head injury, of course. I'm referring to the film that was eventually released as "Accidental Love," which finally snuck onto Blu-ray this year. It's a terrible movie by any metric, and one of the saddest things about it is watching just how flat every attempt at humor falls in it. I am an unrepentant fan of "I Heart Huckabees," the last of the "old" Russell films, but it felt even at the time like he had followed that particular sensibility as far as he possibly could. It was six years until he roared back to life, suddenly transformed into the most reliable "I will get you nominated for an acting...

Laughter is in short supply in this wacky farce about codependent sisters
There’s a lot of talent on screen in Jamie Babbit’s dysfunctional farce about codependent sisters embroiled in a spiralling web of ill-considered coupling and accidental killing. Sadly, the cast can’t save Karey Dornetto’s script from the slough of wacky despond as sex addict Shannon (Judy Greer) drags long-suffering Martha (Natasha Lyonne) away from the would-be welcoming arms of fitness instructor Kelly (Aubrey Plaza) to help her dispose of an inconvenient stiff.
Naff jokes about rape, the Holocaust, and the wretchedness of Fresno leave laughter in short supply as the shrieky action pinballs self-consciously from barmitzvahs to pet cemeteries. Tonally, it’s not a million miles away from the aggravating screwball of Accidental Love, but at least director David O Russell disowned that recut catastrophe.

If he's not the most prolific actor working in Hollywood today, Jake Gyllenhaal is nonetheless one of the most interesting. This year, he’s in “Everest” and “Southpaw” (and the years-late release of “Accidental Love,” but let’s forgive him that one). He also wrapped “Demolition” a film that premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in early September and is slated for an April 2016 U.S. release. All this after a year in which he scored numerous nominations and plaudits for his portrayal of Louis Bloom in the incredible “Nightcrawler.” Yet, as Sam Jones, host of the TV show and podcast “Off Camera” explains, "the most profound change [Gyllenhaal has] made in recent years is one we probably didn’t realize we were witnessing, and that’s what I wanted to talk to him about. After his work in ‘Donnie Darko’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain,’ Jake found himself in the position of being...

Quotes from critics are a standard part of movie marketing. They show up in TV spots, on movie posters, and on Blu-ray packaging. They.re so commonplace that most of us barely notice them anymore. However, one writer for the Av Club certain did when he was erroneously cited on the DVD box for Accidental Love, a movie he despised, and he penned an angry letter about it to the production company. When a two or three word pull is blasted across the screen in a trailer, you have to wonder about the context. It would be easy for a studio marketing department to find a few random words in an otherwise scathing review that, on their own, sound positive. This is exactly the situation Av Club writer and critic AA Dowd came upon when he was quoted as calling Accidental Love "a comedic masterstroke" on the back of a...

This Washington farce about an uninsured waitress seeking redress for a workplace injury is never less than annoying
“I have a nail in my head so I need a Moon Base.” In the days before The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, David O Russell started shooting the healthcare satire Nailed (from Kristin Gore’s novel Sammy’s Hill), only to see the production shut down amid financial chaos. Now, seven years later, we have the retitled Accidental Love, completed (without Russell’s further input) under the pseudonymous director credit “Stephen Greene”.
Unsurprisingly, it’s a mess. Fleeting fragments hint at a superior work while others suggest it was a misfire from the outset. Jessica Biel is rollerskating Indiana waitress Alice who goes to Washington seeking help from congressman Howard Birdwell (Jake Gyllenhaal) following a medically uninsured accident. With a nail lodged in her skull causing mood swings and inhibition loss,...

Director: Stephen Greene; Screenwriters: Kristin Gore, Matthew Silverstein, Dave Jeser; Starring: Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal, Bill Hader, Tracy Morgan; Running time: 100 mins; Certificate: 15
Be careful what you wish for. Abandoned due to financial reasons before production could be completed in 2010, Academy Award-winning director David O. Russell's Nailed has finally emerged in the form of Accidental Love. It's so irredeemably bad that even Alan Smithee wouldn't touch it. The directorial pseudonym of choice here is Stephen Greene, and the movie was completed without O'Russell's involvement or blessing.
The premise is an intriguing one and the cast is impressive, hence the understandable clamour for this abomination to be seen. It involves Jessica Biel's rollerskating waitress Alice receiving a nail to a head in a freak accident, causing her to have an increased sex drive that sways her hips away from her loser lover and thrusts her into the path of Jake Gyllenhaal's creepy Congressman.

Where Benedict Cumberbatch and Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlocks were all lightning intellect and superheroic sleuthing, McKellen’s is considerably more sedate, verging on the doddering. But even in his country retirement, this 93-year-old Holmes has unsolved emotional cases to crack, though his greatest adversary is now dementia. It’s The Adventure Of The Disappearing Marbles. McKellen gives us a rich, ripe Holmes, by turns tender and cantankerous, but the gentle pace makes for a TV-movie feel. It could have done with a shot of the old seven-per-cent solution.

Shot way back in 2008, caught up in the wrangling and law cases involving troubled film financier David Bergstein, shut down several times during production and disowned by its own director, Accidental Love (aka Nailed), finally limps into British cinemas. We can still see traces of what David O Russell and his screenwriter Kristin Gore (daughter of former Vice President Al) were trying to achieve. The aim was for a Frank Capra-style screwball comedy that made some trenchant points about Washington politics and Us heathcare provision.

The salvaged footage of David O Russell’s adaptation of Kristin Gore’s novel about an idealistic aide working on healthcare reform is a real mess
Kristin Gore, daughter of Al, published a novel in 2004 entitled Sammy’s Hill: a Washington DC comedy about an idealistic young political aide working on healthcare reform. Four years later, work began on an independent movie entitled Nailed, freely adapted from the book, with Gore herself co-writing the script and David O Russell directing: a bizarre Obamacare parable with a huge high concept.

★★☆☆☆ It's the film David O. Russell walked away from and whose premise the Obama administration made pathetically redundant. After years in limbo, audiences finally get to see Accidental Love (2015), which began shooting in 2008. Dodgy financing arrangements saw the director jump ship, leaving producers to complete filming and the entire edit. Russell - careful with his words due to lawsuits - has calculated that production shut down nine times before he finally quit. Perhaps humbled and hurt by the experience, he pulled himself up by his creative bootstraps and went on to earn acclaim with a trio of audience and critic’ favourites:The Fighter (2010), Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and American Hustle (2013).

Jessica Biel and Jake Gyllenhaal star in the long-shelved comedy, Accidental Love. Ryan finds out whether it was worth the 7-year wait...
In the beginning there was David O Russell's Nailed, a political comedy which began filming in 2008 and, after a disastrous string of financing problems, seemingly died two years later. Deciding to cut his losses, a frustrated Russell abandoned the project in 2010 and moved onto Oscar glory with The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.
But like Rasputin, Nailed has lingered on without Russell's involvement. Missing pieces have been shot and put in place, and the finished film - now called Accidental Love - is credited to one Stephen Greene, an Alan Smithee-like pseudonym. The result is a fitfully amusing farce that can't begin to hide the scars of its troubled production.

Even before abandoning the troubled movie in 2008, American Hustle director David O Russell was notorious for on-set drama. Now, with the director riding high, the failed film has returned – with a new name – and it’s close to a disaster
There are lots of surprises about David O Russell’s new film. It is, in one sense, David O Russell’s old film, since it was shot in 2008. It is also not really his film at all: his name is nowhere to be found on Accidental Love, which is credited instead to Stephen Greene, presumably a distant relative of Alan Smithee (the name usually invoked when directors disown a movie). Fans who have followed Russell’s career closely, though, will recognise the distinctive plot about a waitress (Jessica Biel) who campaigns for better healthcare after a nail-gun accident relieves her of all sexual inhibitions. Now here's something you don't see every day: an Alan Smithee movie. Originally shot by David O. Russell in 2008 - then under the title of "Nailed" - production was halted mid-way through proceedings due to financial difficulties. Russell then left the project two years later and it was finished in his absence, with the fictional name "Stephen Greene" getting the director's credit. All this hubbub about a little dark comedy about a small-town waitress (Jessica Biel) who is accidentally shot in the head by a nail gun. This accident results in mood swings and hypersexual behaviour, and, hopefully, comedy, with the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Catherine Keener, James Marsden and Tracy Morgan along for the ride. brightcove.createExperiences();Accidental Love will be released in selected cinemas on Friday, June 19.

Mommy Anyone that reads this site regularly knows I love Xavier Dolan's work and Mommy is quite possibly his best yet. I've only seen it once and the DVD (yes, DVD, Lionsgate is not releasing a Blu-ray version) arrived only a couple days ago and I haven't yet popped it in. What's thatc No, it doesn't come with any special features, though the movie is special enough for you to consider giving it a look. For more, you can read my theatrical review right here.
