Obsession is the marrow of erotic thrillers, from the sublime (“Fatal Attraction”) to the ridiculous (“Obsessed”), the hey-not-so-bad (“Sleeping with the Enemy”) to the very-bad-indeed (“The Boy Next Door”), to the auteur-crafted (Tyler Perry’s “Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor”) to the Netflix-knockoff (“Fatal Affair”). This sub-genre is so abundant that in “Fatale,” its latest victim (an appropriately jittery Michael Ealy) once played the unhinged baddie in another film about physical intimacy gone very much awry (“The Perfect Guy”).
That said, despite the ample availability of films that are built on the concept of “guilty pleasures” and delight in unspooling wacky-crazy, sex-mad, unhinged freakfests, the telling of their stories can contain all the freshness of data entry. A predictable yet breezily entertaining and well-acted high school comedy sees a ragtag dance crew aiming for the top
There’s an easy sleepover movie charm to Netflix comedy Work It, a charm that’s proved harder to find in their many other teen offerings of late. It’s a familiar package – dance, romance, parents just, like, not getting it – but it’s a slick and engaging construction, directed with more skill than one would usually expect from a Netflix original. Admittedly, that bar is low (and sinking by the week) but arriving with little to no buzz near the end of a grim summer, it’s a warm and welcome surprise, one that feels like an actual movie and one that should find an enthused young audience eager to rewatch over the coming weeks.

July was a big month for Netflix. Between new originals like The Old Guard, Fatal Affair, Desperados and more, not to mention classic films like Cloud Atlas, Total Recall and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, to name just a few, there was lots for subscribers to get stuck into when it came to movies.
But what were the most-watched films on Netflix for the month? That’s a good question, and as it turns out, the most-watched title – when it comes to movies in the United States, at least – wasn’t even one of the ones mentioned above. No, it was actually an animated children’s flick from 2012 called The Lorax. And it wasn’t the only animated effort to make a strong showing, as Despicable Me placed in number 7.

Netflix are currently in the middle of one of their best years ever when it comes to original movies, and we’ve not even reached the end of July yet. Such is the company’s dominance in the streaming wars that even the critically-panned likes of The Last Days of American Crime, 365 Dni and Fatal Affair have still racked up tens of millions of viewers.
Despite all of them being released in the last four months, Spenser Confidential, Extraction and The Old Guard have already raced their way onto the list of Netflix’s ten most-watched original movies ever, while Spike Lee’s acclaimed Da 5 Bloods positioned itself as an early awards season contender. However, that’s barely the tip of the iceberg, and there are still plenty more high-profile originals set to arrive before 2020 is over, with some of them hailing from the biggest names in the business.

With Warner Bros. vacating its August 12 worldwide release date for “Tenet,” we’re still many weeks away from any approximation of normal business. Meanwhile, the VOD world continues apace with Rod Lurie’s Afghanistan war-set “The Outpost” leading the way. Now in its third week, the Screen Media title remains at #1 at Apple and Spectrum.
Perhaps even more impressive: “Outpost” is #2 at FandangoNow, which ranks by revenue — and Lurie’s film has a non-premium price of $6.99. Even outside a theater, some of its truisms remain — never underestimate the appeal of a military-themed film. In first place at FandangoNow was “Trolls World Tour,” which recently reduced its price from $19.99 to $5.99.
Among other recent premium VOD titles, the best showing this week is “The King of Staten Island” at #2 at Amazon Prime. However, there’s a growing trend for some more specialized titles to pop up. “John Lewis: Good Trouble,” the acclaimed documentary about the late Rep.

Fatal Affair, a Netflix thriller that's heavy on predicability but not so much on the thriller aspect, stars Nia Long as Ellie, a woman who gets caught up in an almost-romance with her college sweetheart (played by Omar Epps) 20 years later. The movie takes place in the Bay Area in California, and Ellie and her family's house is insanely gorgeous. The movie is set in Oceancrest, but we wanted to find out if this town actually exists and if the houses there truly look like this, so we did some digging.
Turns out, Oceancrest is a fictional place. In the beginning of the movie, Ellie and her husband, Marcus (Stephen Bishop), mention they sent their daughter off to school in Berkeley, CA, before moving to Oceancrest. While Ellie feels like she's so far away from her daughter, Marcus notes that Berkeley is only an hour drive away. They also mention...

In a swank house, a man and a woman engage in amorous acrobatics before a large, glowing fireplace. The blaze seems a little ominous. So does the woman’s trip to the kitchen. And, as if to heighten the tension more, should any character coyly say “we’re not done yet” while the movie’s score promises otherwise? Probably not. But then “Fatal Affair” wastes little time delivering on its breathless title. And, that is so not a spoiler, just the start of an intermittently effective, consistently derivative thriller starring Nia Long and Omar Epps, now streaming on Netflix.
Wearing a gold wedding band with a good-size rock and heading into her and husband Marcus’ newly bought beachfront home, Ellie Warren (Long) is poised to begin living the life. She’s set to leave the San Francisco law firm where she’s been an asset and put out her own shingle.

We all deal with being in lockdown in different ways. Some of us by learning a musical instrument, some by writing a novel, and some by binging the nearly infinite library of new and old TV shows available on streaming services. Others, meanwhile, watch and rave about a horny and sinister thriller to have hit Netflix a few days ago.
Fatal Affair revolves around Ellie, a successful attorney who begins working with David, an old friend from college. After a few catch-up drinks, they almost hook up in a nightclub bathroom until Ellie stops things and goes back to her husband Marcus and attempts to rekindle their marriage after the two of them began to grow distant. Unfortunately, David begins stalking her and attempts to ingratiate himself into her life in increasingly demanding ways, the scenes becoming more ominous and controlling as the movie progresses and his questionable past is revealed.

There must be plenty of back-slapping going on in the Netflix boardroom, with the streaming service knocking it out of the park recently when it comes to their original movies and TV shows.
Having just released the list of their Top 10 most-watched original movies ever that revealed Extraction had been streamed almost 100 million times, something star Chris Hemsworth was quick to shout from the rooftops, the rankings will already need to be updated following the success of The Old Guard.
The Charlize Theron-led comic book adaptation has been yet another huge hit for Netflix, with fans already crying out for a sequel, which we’ve heard is now in the works. Not only that, but the movie is also projected to reach over 70 million households in just four weeks, meaning that it would slot into sixth place on the company’s all-time viewership charts.

For over a week, Charlize Theron’s new film The Old Guard was one of the most-watched bits of content available to Netflix subscribers living in America. Now, however, the acclaimed action-adventure drama has been dethroned by a rather surprising contestant, a little-known thriller by the name of Fatal Affair, which has taken the #1 spot on the Top 10 movies chart.
Written and directed by Peter Sullivan alongside Rasheeda Garner, Fatal Affair tells the story of a woman who tries to save her marriage after a brief but potent encounter with an old friend, only to discover that said friend turns out to be more dangerous and unhinged than they originally led on.
The movie, which currently holds a Metacritic score of 33 as well as a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 17%, stars Nia Long alongside Omar Epps and Stephen Bishop. Critics have scolded it for its uninspired dialogue, a boring plot and an underdeveloped villain.

If The Witcher didn’t tick all of the boxes you were looking for in a fantasy show, or Warrior Nun failed to deliver on its potential as a binge-worthy female-driven series then don’t worry, because Netflix‘s latest hit looks to balance the best of both worlds. the greatest assets of Peter Sullivan’s “Fatal Affair” are stars Nia Long and Omar Epps. At least they keep the feature from just looking and feeling like a limp Lifetime movie knockoff, though Sullivan himself hails from the wide world of Lifetime and Hallmark moviemaking (including no less than a dozen directorial efforts with the word “Christmas” in their titles). And yet, armed with the freedom that Netflix backing should bring — aka not needing to worry about keeping things broadcast-friendly — Sullivan and co-writer Rasheeda Garner don’t so much as bust out of the genre box as dig into it.
Opening with a double murder, the film somewhat makes good on its “fatal” promise. The “affair” part? Not so much.
Cut from the same cloth as dozens of other erotic thrillers — theatrical hits “Fatal Attraction” and “Obsessed” as well as scores of made-for-tv outings — Sullivan’s film follows a predictable pattern,...

An uninspired Fatal Attraction knock-off wastes a charismatic Nia Long on a script with zero surprises or tension
From the company that gave us Secret Obsession and Dangerous Lies comes another Lifetime movie-level “thriller” that pairs two picked-out-of-a-hat genre buzzwords together and comes up with something we’ve seen many, many times before. The surprising success of the aforementioned Netflix originals has caused the streamer to frantically assemble more of the same: low-budget, low-risk TV movies that place vaguely recognisable actors in familiar situations. With Fatal Affair, it’s the 90s stars Nia Long and Omar Epps replaying the endlessly regurgitated Fatal Attraction formula with absolutely nothing new brought to the table.

Sticking the word "fatal" in the title of a psycho-thriller about an extramarital encounter that spirals out of control inevitably invites comparison with the mother of all boiled-bunny infidelity nightmares, Fatal Attraction. Netflix's Fatal Affair flips the gender on that formula, making the nutcase who will not be ignored a man with a violent personality disorder and mad hacking skills, while the woman is safely depicted as a loving wife who slams on the brakes just as her brush with philandering temptation is about to become a more serious transgression. The result is a passably entertaining diversion, glossy and decently ...

Nia Long is following in the footsteps of Thandie Newton by calling out the problematic casting process for the 2000 action movie “Charlie’s Angels.” In a new interview with Insider, Long revealed that her agent notified her that she wouldn’t be getting the part of Alex Munday in “Charlie’s Angels” because she “looked too old” to star opposite costar Drew Barrymore. Long said she believed the rejection had racist undertones.
“I was like, “What?” Long said. “I love Drew Barrymore, I think she’s amazing, but I think that was just a nice way to say you’re a little too Black. Personally, that’s what I think. Because if you notice there were no brown skin [actors]. I mean, honestly, I would have been the blackest thing in the film.”

Netflix typically has a rolling release schedule, with new additions coming to the streaming giant’s library every day, but for the last few days there’s been an unusual break with routine.
Since last Friday, which saw the release of Charlize Theron-starring superpowered action movie The Old Guard amongst other things, Netflix has taken a long weekend off and not added any fresh movies and TV shows to its catalogue. The drought comes to an end today, though, with July 14th bringing the following three new titles:
The Business of Drugs (Limited Series) On est ensemble / We Are One (2020) Urzila Carlson: Overqualified Loser (2020)
The Business of Drugs is a new six-part documentary series that aims to examine the long history of America’s “war on drugs.” On est ensemble/We Are One, meanwhile, is a French docu-movie following a group of activists who participate in a music video.

"I'm not giving up on us, Ellie." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an intense romantic thriller titled Fatal Affair, the latest film from filmmaker Peter Sullivan. The vague plot synopsis for this film sets up the story: Ellie tries to mend her marriage with her husband Marcus after a brief encounter with an old friend, David, only to discover that David is more dangerous and unstable than she'd realized. Nia Long stars, with Omar Epps and Stephen Bishop, and a cast including Aubrey Cleland, Maya Stojan, Kj Smith, and Jason-Shane Scott. This is yet another of these cliche, turns out that nice guy you hooked up with is really a killer, films. Epps looks like he ain't messing around. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Peter Sullivan's Fatal Affair, direct from Netflix's YouTube: Ellie (Nia Long) tries to mend her marriage with her husband Marcus (Stephen Bishop...

If the decades of erotic thrillers have taught film fans anything, it’s that marital affairs never end well. There’s a film about how a woman or a man cheats on their spouse and everything just works out perfectly in the end. And in “Fatal Affair,” the trend continues.

Netflix has confirmed most of its upcoming content for July, so it’s time to take a look at what’s on the horizon. It’s a quiet-ish month for the streaming giant, but we assume it’ll only get quieter in the next part of the year as the industry shutdown continues to impact release schedules everywhere. Nonetheless, Netflix still has some intriguing projects to offer, for the time being.
July will see the return of The Umbrella Academy for its highly anticipated second season, but Netflix also has a few new gambles in the form of its Unsolved Mysteries and The Baby-Sitters Club reboots, along with a brand new spin on the Arthurian legend with its Lady of the Lake series, Cursed. Elsewhere, Charlize Theron stars as an immortal badass in comic book adaptation The Old Guard and we’ll take another trip into teen rom-com territory with...

You know, plenty of streaming services would treat the dog days of summer as an excuse to slow down. At Netflix, however, the content buffet is still open, baby. Despite the coronavirus pandemic shutting down all of Hollywood for an extended period of time, Netflix’s new releases for July 2020 are still jam-packed with a host of familiar originals.
The blockbuster this month is probably The Umbrella Academy season 2. The next installment for the Hargreeves family arrives on July 31. And if that’s too long of a wait for you, Netflix gets the month off to a strong start with a string of originals as well. Unsolved Mysteries arrives on July 1, followed by Warrior Nun on July 2, and The Baby-Sitter’s Club on July 3. That’s not even to mentioned the feminist take on Arthurian legend, Cursed, which premiers on July 17.
There are a couple of intriguing original movies to consider this month as well.

Exclusive: Nia Long is set to star in Dreams of the Moon, a film that’s inspired by a true story from Inner City Films. Long will also serve as an executive producer on the project, which is being directed by Alfons Adetuyi (Love Jacked). In addition, Eden Duncan-Smith, from the Netflix and Spike Lee-produced film See You Yesterday, will also star.
Set in 1971 against the backdrop of the secret Nasa Apollo 16 training mission, the indie tells the story of an African-American teenage girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut in her small mining town.
Denis Foon penned the screenplay. Inner City Films and Spier Films are producing the pic, which is slated to begin shooting this April in South Africa. This will mark the second collaboration between the two companies, which previously teamed on romantic comedy Love Jacked, starring Amber Stevens West, Shamier Anderson, Mike Epps, and David Keith.
