Correction: An early version of this article indicated that Studiocanal had acquired global rights to 11 River Road Entertainment, but Searchlight holds domestic U.S. and Canada rights to “12 Years a Slave” and U.S. and U.K. rights to “The Tree of Life.”
Studiocanal and River Road Entertainment have announced an exclusive international distribution deal for 11 celebrated films, including Steve McQueen’s Oscar-winning “12 Years a Slave,” Terrence Malick’s Palme d’Or-winning “The Tree of Life” and Sean Penn’s critically acclaimed “Into the Wild.”
The partnership brings together Europe’s leading production and distribution house, Studiocanal, and the American independent film production giant, River Road Entertainment, in a multi-territory arrangement covering TV, SVOD, theatrical and other media platforms.
Under the agreement, Studiocanal will distribute nine feature films and two documentaries, a roster of prestigious titles that have collectively earned over $440 million at the global box office.

Versus Pay Homage to Australia’s Cult Cinematic History in Party Dozen’s ‘Coup de Gronk’ Music Video
As the proverb goes, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” so when Kirsty Tickle and Jonathan Boulet from riotous musical duo Party Dozen were looking to create a music video for Coup de Gronk, the first release from their new album Crime in Australia, they immediately reached out to fellow Aussie duo Versus to rekindle the fruitful collaboration which brought us the delightfully cacophonous junkyard-set promo for Macca the Mutt. The creative output and common synergy between regularly featured on Dn directorial team Tanya Babić and Jason Sukadana and the band is immediately recognisable in this third gritty, loud and absorbing video they’ve made together. Coup de Gronk delves into Australia’s seedier underbelly while paying homage to the low-budget, cult world of Ozploitation films. A saxophone is wielded as a vicious weapon, fear follows in their wake and when Party Dozen come to collect forget your pathetic excuses,...

Kobe Bryant began his career with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996 and was named an All-Star in his second season. He quickly became an attraction in the media and appeared in several commercials and TV shows. In 1997, he appeared in a TV show alongside one of America’s top models at the time, Cindy Crawford. Looking back at the interview, fans of both Bryant and Crawford are sure that it wouldn’t fly well today.

During several instances in the show, the 31-year-old Crawford flirted with an 18-year-old Bryant. The basketball legend tried to remain professional and reminded the supermodel that they were on a TV show. It was clear that Crawford was trying to get a few laughs, but it was one awkward interview for audiences watching today.

Who on earth would want to release a horror movie in November?! That’s like showing up to Thanksgiving dinner on a full stomach or going for a jog after a marathon. Surely, studios don’t purposefully plan to release their movie during the four weeks After the entire world is consumed with the dead, dying, maimed and dismembered, right? The calendar says spooky season is over (although you and I know differently) and as the grumpy neighbor in Halloween II says, the general audience has “been trick or treated to death” by October’s end.
On the contrary, November Horror has had some shockingly great runs over the years. And maybe there’s a method to the madness. If horror fans are lucky, October is packed tighter than a Black Friday sale at Target during a live in store Taylor Swift performance. Why not wait a couple of weeks...

Salma Hayek Pinault Was Told She Was Too 'Sexy' For Comedy Until Adam Sandler's Grown Ups Came Along
As a producer, Adam Sandler has always managed to attract an impressive litany of talent. Although the films released through Sandler's studio, Happy Madison, regularly get terrible reviews, they tend to be very lucrative and high-profile actors keep coming back for more work. This may be because, as the rumor mill has it, Sandler is a relentlessly decent and kind human being that others love to work with. As such, Al Pacino can be seen in "Jack and Jill," Susan Sarandon appeared in "That's My Boy," and the likes of Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale, Jennifer Aniston, and Winona Ryder have all played Sandler's wife or love interest in his movies.
In Dennis Dugan's 2010 film "Grown Ups," Salma Hayek Pinault plays Roxanne, a successful fashion designer, and the wife of a talent agent named Lenny (Sandler). "Grown Ups" is about how Lenny is still very close with the circle of...

Adam and Rebekah Neumann are the subjects of Apple TV+'s upcoming series "WeCrashed." Based on the Wondery podcast "WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork," the show explores how Adam's office space startup company went from being valued at $47 billion to $2.9 million in 2020.
As the wife of WeWork's founder and CEO, Rebekah served as a sort of executive to the startup and had major influence over the company's decisions. But WeWork wasn't her only interest. In addition to being passionate about yoga and spirituality, Rebekah dabbled in acting.
Though she didn't have the same success as her cousin Gwyneth Paltrow, she does have a few acting credits under her belt, including playing a Un Diplomat in 2010's "Fair Game," Sam in 2010's "Nomads," Ara in 2010's "Awake," and Katherine in 2021's "Aunt Louisa." Rebekah also wrote and produced "Awake," which starred Rosario Dawson, and is her most notable short film to date.

Alice Glass has released a video for her new song “Fair Game.” The dramatic clip, directed by Bryan M. Ferguson, sees the singer bound in chains in a darkened room and slowly shows her escaping.
“Fair Game is Trauma Core,” Glass wrote on Twitter as the video premiered. “Pain equalizes us all. Suffering is our great equalizer.” She added, “Crystal Castles was. Alice Glass is.”
Glass has released several singles this year, leading up to the release of her album, Prey//IV, which arrives on Jan. 28 via Eating Glass Records.

Jez Butterworth will adapt Don DeLillo’s “The Silence” for the screen, Variety has learned. Producer Uri Singer, who is also producing and helped put together Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of another DeLillo novel, “White Noise,” has secured the rights to the book, which was published in 2020.
“The Silence” unfolds at a dinner party in Manhattan during Super Bowl Sunday in the year 2022. The diners include a retired physics professor, her husband and her former student. They are waiting for a couple, who is set to join them after flying in from Paris. To share more might risk ruining the post-modern twists and turns.
Vincent Sieber (“The Chronicles of Narnia” at Netflix) of Midnight Road will produce alongside Singer.

Sean Penn defiantly swims against the Hollywood current with “Flag Day,” a labor of love that harkens back to another era of moviemaking. Jennifer Vogel’s memoir “Flim-Flam Man: A True Family History,” published in 2004, resisted film financing over 18 years, said producer William Horberg (“The Queen’s Gambit”) at the Cannes afterparty at the Martinez. Back at the start, producer Michael De Luca loved the project, and after many detours and obstacles, when the MGM studio head saw the nearly finished film, enthusiastically acquired it for release in 2021 (just as the studio was acquired by Amazon). Horberg was joyful at the film’s good fortune.
Like many other well-reviewed films at Cannes, a robust theatrical future is by no means assured for this old-fashioned ’70s-’80s father-daughter story, which marks Penn’s first time acting in his own film, after helming six features. Thanks to Matt Damon, Penn said at Sunday’s press conference,...

If you were concerned about there being a content drought in August due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down Hollywood, you were…absolutely right in those concerns.
For its new releases in August 2020, Hulu is following Apple, Disney, and even Peacock’s lead in taking things nice and slowly. The vast majority of the notable offerings here are of the library variety. Hulu adds classic movies like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Rain Man, and Top Gun on August 1. Those go along with the very much still-holds-up Casino Royale on August 31.
Hulu also has room for some interesting recent indie movies like Ordinary Love (Aug. 3) and Peanut Butter Falcon (Aug. 6). But when it comes to Hulu original content there’s not much going on. The unheralded Find Me in Paris debuts its third season on August 21. That is followed by original comedy The Binge on August 28. And that’s about it!

Amazon Prime’s new releases in June 2020 is fairly lacking in original material. That’s to be expected for a streaming service that focuses on quality over quantity to begin with now going through a pandemic content crunch.
Standup special Gina Brillon: The Floor Is Lava, Joseph Gordon-Levitt film 7500, and Pete the Cat season 2 are the only originals arriving this month. And that’s fine as Amazon is about to be home to one of 2019’s most fun films. That’s right – Knives Out makes its debut on June 12. It might be awhile before we get to see the next Benoit Blanc mystery so hopefully this will tide us over.
June 1 also sees the arrival of Dirty Dancing, Kingpin, and the tragically underrated Sex Drive. It’s not the most impressive month Amazon has ever had, but at least you still get free shipping.

June 1 also sees the arrival of Dirty Dancing, Kingpin, and the tragically underrated Sex Drive. It’s not the most impressive month Amazon has ever had, but at least you still get free shipping.

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.
First up, you can get wholesome with Mr. Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, which tells the story of an investigative journalist who learns some hard life lessons from one of television’s most beloved personalities. You can then supplement that wholesomeness with My Girl and My Girl 2 for some wonderful 90s nostalgia.

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

Exclusive: Joseph Middleton, Evp Casting for Paramount Pictures & Paramount Television, has left the studio after nine years. I hear he departed last month when his contract was up. No replacement has been named yet.
Middleton was a well known feature casting director when he was brought in as head of casting for Paramount Pictures at the start of 2011. He later added Paramount’s TV division, Paramount Television, to his oversight when it was launched in 2013. With the TV operation’s output growing steadily over the past six years, I hear there is a possibility for Paramount to name separate heads of casting for film and TV following Middleton’s exit, though no final decision has been made yet.
As an independent casting director before joining Paramount, Middleton worked on such films as The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Fair Game, Immortals,...

Summer is when distributors check out the movies coming in and make decisions about the best time to release them. Some movies just cry out as Oscar bait, and Warner Bros. has slotted writer-director Destin Daniel Cretton’s civil rights drama “Just Mercy” for an Oscar-qualifying December 25 limited release before going wide January 10, 2020. (It was slated for January 17.)
This studio doesn’t make awards decisions lightly; it wouldn’t stick a modestly budgeted drama into the height of the Christmas rush without good reason. Other high-profile, year-end Oscar contenders include Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” starring Soairse Ronan, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, and Timothee Chalamet, which is likely to skip the fall festivals due to its late release date, as well as Jay Roach’s “Fair Game,” starring Nicole Kidman and Charlize Theron as the gutsy women who take on Fox news czar Roger Ailes (John Lithgow).

Clinton Portis says there's Two reasons he would booze on Hennessey before taking the field during his NFL career -- pain management and "turning up." Yeah, it's confusing ... but that's how the former Washington Redskins running back justified his alcoholic pre-game ritual while appearing on FS1's "Fair Game with Kristine Leahy" on Monday. "If you're going out to have a good time, you pre-game" Portis explained while comparing playing in the NFL to hitting the clubs with friends.

Finally. After eight years, it’s finally here. Wait, you aren’t one of the presumed millions of people who’ve been waiting almost a decade for a director’s cut of “Fair Game?” Well, whoever’s been asking for this, your prayers are answered and all praise rightfully goes to President Trump.
Sarcasm aside, if you’ve never seen the true-life political drama, which was originally released in 2010, don’t expect to be called before a firing squad.

Children of Men (Alfonso Cuarón)
Some of the best sci-fi stories ask one simple question and then imagine a world in which that question becomes a real concern. What happens when the sun dies? What happens when AI becomes indistinguishable from a person? Children of Men, flawlessly directed by Alfonso Cuarón, asks a question that is painful to consider and even more painful to observe: what happens when people can’t reproduce? The world that is created in the wake of this question is one in which hope and progress have died together, the last vestiges of society and technology crumbling simultaneously. Eight years ago, Fair Game came and went with little fanfare, despite a pair of stellar lead performances and sharp direction from Doug Liman. Based on the book of the same name, Naomi Watts plays Valerie Plame, a real-life CIA agent whose identity was exposed in 2003 after her husband Joe Wilson (Sean Penn) wrote an Op-Ed in The New York Times contradicting the Bush White House’s claims that Iraq was building nuclear weapons. The new cut, though only a few minutes longer, feels improved, necessary and refreshing for the current moment. Watts has rarely been better, and Liman does well in keeping the focus on a marriage in turmoil as much as it’s on a political crisis. The Film Stage got the chance to speak with both Liman and Plame, reflecting on the first cut of the movie many years back, the need for a fresh take on the material,...

Doug Liman is an independent filmmaker who gets away with murder in Hollywood because he boasts a string of major hits, from “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “The Bourne Identity” to “Edge of Tomorrow.” He often throws sets into chaos in order to achieve unexpected results. “My films have been successful and therefore the process has accommodated me,” he once told me. “When the studio said ‘no,’ I did it anyhow. Now, they don’t say no to me.”
Indeed. Liman’s films are consistently watchable and entertaining in their quirky unpredictability, even with his misfires (see: “Jumper”). Indie-financed “Fair Game” (Summit Entertainment), which earned mixed reviews (Metascore: 69) and struggled at the 2010 box office (domestic total: $9 million), is hardly the usual candidate for a re-release 8 years later. Yet here it is. “I’ve never seen a rule I didn’t think about breaking,” he told me on the phone.

Action specialist Doug Liman is in early negotiations to direct a remake of “The Cannonball Run” for Warner Bros.
Jesse Ehrman and Paul Perez are overseeing the project for the studio. Warner Bros. was negotiating last year with “Central Intelligence” director Rawson Thurber to helm a reboot of the “Cannonball Run” franchise and “Reno 911” stars Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant were in talks to write the script. The original franchise starred Burt Reynolds, Frank Sinatra, Roger Moore, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dom DeLuise. The films centered on an illegal cross-country race where the participants played dirty tricks on one another.

PodcastOne CEO Jim Berk has left the top job at the podcast network, saying he is moving on after positioning the company for its next chapter.
Berk joined PodcastOne two years ago, reporting to longtime friend and founder, Norm Pattiz, who serves as the company’s executive chairman.
“Jim came in and has been very very helpful in positioning the company to do a number of things we weren’t able to do before hand,” Pattiz told Deadline. “Jim’s task has been pretty well completed. He wants to go on and examine some other things.”
PodcastOne is a producer and distributor of some 250 different podcasts, including shows from celebrities like Adam Carolla, Dan Patrick and Shaquille O’Neal. The company said it generated 2.8 billion podcast downloads over the last year.
“We’re a big fish in a small pond,” said Pattiz, who is best known as founder of the Westwood One radio network.

Much has been made about the dearth of strong female roles in contemporary cinema, and the problematic depictions of women in many recent movies, but the past two decades have provided plenty of counterexamples. While the onus is on writers and directors to craft strong female characters, the actresses themselves bring these figures to life, and they’re often the main reason we keep being drawn back to these works.
In no particular order, our favorite — and we’d like to think the best — female performances of the 21st century.
Isabelle Huppert, “Elle”
Paul Verhoeven’s “Elle” begins with a laugh that catches in your throat: A wide-eyed cat looks off-screen to the screams of a man and woman in apparent orgiastic bliss. Then comes the cutaway, which reveals a far more nefarious incident: Middle-aged Michéle (Isabelle Huppert), in the process of getting raped by a masked assailant on the floor of her home.

Doug Liman on Swingers, getting arrested, American Made, Bourne and much more...
It was only a couple of weeks ago that we last spoke to Doug Liman, who in July was promoting his compact, $3 million war thriller The Wall. Now, he's back with another thriller, this one taking place over a much broader canvas. American Made tells the story of Barry Seal, a pilot who wound up running missions in and out of Central America for the CIA; taking covert photographs and smuggling in guns.

The film's the perfect vehicle for Cruise, given that he gets to fly lots of planes, but then again, Barry Seal's hardly your typical heroic Cruise lead: Seal earns a fortune running guns for the CIA and cocaine for the cartels, but...

With a staggeringly impressive back catalogue of movies to his name, Doug Liman has returned to his roots somewhat with his latest endeavour The Wall – a lower-budget affair driven the characters that inhabit this brutal landscape.
We discusses the appeal of this narrative, and the pressure that derives from depicting modern warfare. We then got onto the subject of Live Die Repeat and Repeat – a sequel to the immensely popular Edge of Tomorrow. Liman explains what compelled him to return to this world, why the studio weren’t quite so keen to begin with – and exactly why he believes this film will be ever better than the original. On the subject of sequels, he also discusses why he never made a follow-up to Swingers, though admitted it was a thought that crossed his mind…
So what was it about this screenplay which appealed to you as a director and storyteller?...

Director Doug Liman's never been one to back away from a fresh challenge. Whether it was making the leap from low-budget indie movies like Swingers and Go to expensive spy thriller, The Bourne Identity, or the knotty problems of making a time-paradox movie like Edge Of Tomorrow, Liman reliably goes for left-field project choices.

In The Wall, Doug Liman does something rare among established directors: he goes right back to basics. Shot for just $3m, The Wall is a lean, taut thriller set during the second Iraq war. Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena play a pair of soldiers who, while scoping out an oil...

Doug Liman seems to be one of the hottest directors in the game at the moment, with his name attached to numerous big projects like Justice League Dark and Chaos Walking (starring Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland). The filmmaker, who delivered beloved comedy Swingers in just his second try at the helm, most recently proved to fans that he can direct a great sci-fi outing, too, with Edge of Tomorrow aka Live Die Repeat, and thankfully, he’s back in the director’s chair for the sequel.
Liman’s latest is The Wall, which features Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena as American soldiers under attack by a legendary Iraqi sniper by the name of Juba, the Angel of Death. The film is a tense exercise in psychological and physical torment on the battlefield as a cat and mouse game is played out in the extreme heat of the desert.

- We Got This Covered
Though Doug Liman has built much of his blockbuster filmography on memorable action set-pieces, from The Bourne Identity all the way through Edge of Tomorrow, his earlier work (Swingers, Go) speaks to a more efficient, character-driven filmmaker. His new picture The Wall feels like a little bit of both. We got a chance to chat with the director about the film, the intricate design of the titular wall and how he deals with his short attention span while making movies.
You’ve worked on a decent amount of action thrillers. What jumped out to you when you read this script?
The reason why I’m drawn to making action movies is because I love pinning characters down in impossible situations and then seeing how they survive. And, you know, I’ve created some pretty outrageous situations; spies with amnesia or aliens and time travel in Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow.
