Musical episodes of TV shows weren’t invented by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, nor by Xena: Warrior Princess either. But it was Xena that came up with a way of doing musical episodes that was incredibly effective, and Buffy that perfected it, producing a musical that has been a touchstone for TV ever since.
Some TV shows are designed to be a musical every week, of course, from Glee to Schmigadoon! to Flight of the Conchords. But there is also a fairly long-standing tradition of non-musical shows including musical episodes from time to time.
It might seem like having characters who do not normally sing randomly burst into song would be restricted to science fiction and fantasy, in which an invented reason can be provided for the singing, but plenty of non-sci fi and fantasy shows have done musicals either by making the whole thing take place inside someone’s...

Last month, it was announced that writer/producer Judalina Neira is developing a TV series reimagining of the classic sitcom Bewitched for Sony Pictures Television, aiming to turn it into an “irreverent hourlong” show. NBC clearly likes the idea of reviving Bewitched, because now Deadline has broken the news that the network has their own “Bewitched-inspired” show called Something Wicked in the works, and this one already has a star attached: June Diane Raphael, who may be best known for playing the character Brianna Hanson for the 94 episodes that make up the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, which ran for seven seasons.
Raphael is also writing and executive producing Something Wicked with Dickinson creator Alena Smith. A multi-camera comedy, the show is described as having a Bewitched-type premise and will also serve as an homage to TV sitcom classics. It examines the condition of modern adult womanhood and how even with witchcraft,...

Director Paul King is best known for delivering the first two installments of the charming and delightful "Paddington" franchise. Sadly, he won't be at the helm of "Paddington in Peru," the forthcoming third film in the series, but that's because he opted to step into the sweet world of Roald Dahl with "Wonka." The origin story of the famed chocolatier from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" has become one of the biggest box office hits of 2023, and King is already working on potential ideas for a "Wonka" sequel. But 20 years ago, Paul King was just a scrappy young filmmaker cutting his teeth on a cult favorite comedy series across the pond.

Duncan Jones made an incredible debut with his Sam Rockwell-starring sci-fi, Moon. However, his follow-ups haven’t collected as much acclaim with the Groundhog Day-on-a-train thriller Source Code, his step into the big-budget franchise world with Warcraft, and his high-concept Netflix sci-fi, Mute. For years, Jones has been developing an adaptation of the comic Rogue Trooper, which is to be an animated feature. The production has been rolling along, and Variety has revealed the cast of actors that Jones has been able to compile for the film.
Aneurin Barnard, Hayley Atwell and Jack Lowden are reportedly said to be the main cast in the lead roles for the science-fiction animated film. Barnard, whose credits include The Goldfinch and Dunkirk, is set to star as the eponymous Rogue Trooper. The Minecraft movie is based on the hugely successful video game franchise, which allows players to explore a blocky, procedurally generated 3D world. Dig your business socks out from the back of your dresser drawer because it might be business time before you know it! Rhys Darby recently spoke with Deadline at the Creative Arts Emmys and informed the outlet that a Flight of the Conchords reunion could be on the horizon. Flight of the Conchords is a comedic musical duo out of New Zealand featuring Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie. Flight of the Conchords is also the name of the band’s HBO series that launched in 2007 and ran for two seasons before getting canceled. Darby plays the band’s manager, Murray Hewitt, in the show, and now there are rumblings of getting the band back together.
“We’re always discussing the sort of things we’d like to do in the future and looking back at the classic things we’ve done,” Darby told Deadline on Saturday. “There will come a time when the world really,...

New Zealander Rhys Darby made a splash in the U.S. in 2007 for his portrayal of band manager Murray Hewitt in HBO’s Flight of the Conchords, a series that ended after only two short seasons. And while he and his co-stars Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie have all moved on to other projects, the trio might surprise fans one day with a reunion.
“We’re always discussing the sort of things we’d like to do in the future and looking back at the classic things we’ve done,” Darby revealed to Deadline at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday, where he presented statuettes in multiple categories. “There will come a time when the world really, really needs [the reunion] and we will suddenly appear.”
Additionally, the actor and comedian said he’d be into reprising the role of Anton the werewolf from the hit indie film What We Do in the Shadows...

Taika Waititi’s early career in small comedies included some acclaimed but slightly obscure titles with his involvement in HBO’s Flight of the Conchords and features such as What We Do in the Shadows and The Hunt for the Wilderpeople. The writer/director certainly had a distinct voice and that voice was an unlikely choice for a big-budget Marvel Studios film. The success of Thor: Ragnarok and his additional appearances as Korg helped Waititi accumulate clout so that he can go on to make his more passionate projects like Jojo Rabbit and the recent soccer comedy, Next Goal Wins, which stars Michael Fassbender.
IndieWire reports that Waititi sat down with the hosts of the Smartless podcast, Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, where he revealed that he didn’t plan to direct a movie like Thor: Ragnarok for his filmmaking career and he really took the project because he was poor.

I’ve watched enough Doctor Who to know time is a complicated construct with rules fluctuating from one interpretation to the next. Thankfully, Rhys Darby’s Casper has time travel all figured out in Relax, I’m From the Future, a new time-traveling comedy that finally breaks the multiversal merry-go-round we’ve been riding for the past few years. In today’s exclusive Relax, I’m From the Future clip, Casper dismisses the Butterfly Effect and misinformation about multiple realities.
The scene finds Casper and Holly (Gabrielle Graham) discussing multiversal misnomers in a dimly lit diner over piping hot mugs of jitter juice. Casper explains how there’s only one reality, and that time is more like a mushy blob than anything we’ve seen in movies. Doc Brown lied to us, folks! Oh, the humanity! While branching paths in the timeline exist, they eventually converge in the same direction, leading toward a pre-determined future.

Although Taika Waititi is now known (for better or worse) mostly for his contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the polar opposite receptions of his two Chris Hemsworth Thor movies, the New Zealand native insists his career will not be primarily big-budget Hollywood movies. The Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder director keeps one foot in smaller films. Waititi squeezed in the acclaimed Jojo Rabbit in between Marvel films, and he now helms the underdog soccer film Next Goal Wins.
The sports comedy will star Michael Fassbender, Oscar Kightley, Kaimana, David Fane, Rachel House, Beulah Koale, Uli Latukefu, Semu Filipo, Lehi Falepapalangi, with Will Arnett and Elisabeth Moss.
Fox Searchlight Pictures has recently released a series of photos from the film as well as an official one-sheet poster. Now, the studio has unveiled the first clip from the film that showcases Fassbender’s apathy in coaching the collection of his underwhelming ragtag roster.

When he’s not pining for Blackbeard’s embrace on Our Flag Means Death or reprimanding werewolves for using foul language, Rhys Darby fights for the future of humankind! Blue Fox Entertainment‘s Relax, I’m From The Future trailer is here to tickle your ribs after the long Labor Day weekend. The sci-fi comedy hails from Luke Higginson for his feature directorial debut. In addition to operating the camera, Higginson wrote the screenplay and edited the film inspired by his short film of the same name that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 10 years ago.
In the Relax, I’m From The Future trailer, Darby stars as Casper, a time traveler trapped in the past who befriends Holly (Gabrielle Graham), a jaded drifter. They exploit his knowledge of the future, oblivious to the consequences they have set in motion, while a more competent time traveler, Doris (Janine Theriault), tries to stop them.

I've been pretty vocal over the years since joining Team /Film that Paul Reubens' performance as Amilyn in the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie is my favorite of his outside of Pee-wee Herman, evening going so far as to declare his character's dramatic death scene as one of the best non-Marvel post-credits scenes in cinema history. Reubens was one of the most influential comedic performers to ever live, and watching him completely transform into different characters was always a delight. Amilyn the Vampire was a perfect role for Reubens because it allowed him to play completely against his Pee-wee type while still showing off his phenomenal talents as a character actor.

HBO’s potential deal to license a slew of library titles to rival Netflix, as revealed by Deadline, was met with derision by some, another example of Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav selling off the crown jewels to hit his savings targets.
However, industry experts have urged that the move could actually open the door to streaming profitability and increase residuals for creatives, leading to a larger digital détente.
Talk of such a move was a surprise, largely given the frostiness between the two rivals, which have been battling it out on the talent and awards front for the last few years, but optics aside, a deal, which was described as “groundbreaking” by one source, could be good for consumers and the town.

We’ve all made the “Cop Rock” jokes. The Steven Bochco musical drama, which premiered in fall 1990, was a big swing: marrying original music with procedural storytelling. It was a colossal flop that we still talk about three decades later, and a reminder that musicals are hard.
Music has been a part of the TV landscape going back to the 1950s and shows like “Your Hit Parade.” But few series have successfully integrated regular music performances into their storytelling: “The Monkees” and “The Partridge Family” worked in the 1960s and ’70s. “Fame” did it in the early ’80s. And then “Cop Rock” scared people off the concept.
The 1990s animation boom incorporated music in shows like “The Simpsons” and “Animaniacs.” But not until the 21st century did scripted series really figure out how to make musical numbers work as part of the narrative. “Flight of the Conchords” did it with satiric tracks,...

Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from the Season 3 finale of Apple’s Ted Lasso.
The biggest question about the Season 3 finale of Apple TV+’s hit Ted Lasso is whether or not it would serve as the comedy’s series finale. Top to bottom, the episode titled “So Long, Farewell” feels like a series finale in how everything gets tied up but the show could certainly carry on as is—with or without Ted (Jason Sudeikis) who pulled the trigger on his move back to Kansas to be with his family.
From the moment the episode begins, Ted can’t help but smile while thinking he will be back home with his son Henry (Gus Turner). The pair exchange cute texts using funny gifs as they do.

As ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” continues to be hailed as a revelatory comedy series that puts classic networks back on the TV awards map, attention should also be paid to the other great non-streaming sitcoms of its age. Take, for instance, “American Auto,” which, after two strong seasons, has proven a worthy successor to past NBC workplace comedies like “The Office” and “Superstore.” At a time when increasingly dark dramedies dominate much of the television landscape, it’s important to keep part of the spotlight on feel-good laffers, and “American Auto” stands as proof that there is more than one such model on the lot.
“American Auto” primarily takes place in the Detroit corporate offices of fictional car company Payne Motors, which has recently fallen under the control of ill-equipped CEO Katherine Hastings (a perfectly cast Ana Gasteyer). With each passing episode, her central goal of at least keeping pace...

Last week, we learned that Paramount Pictures’ horror Western project with the brilliant title Organ Trail (inspired by the real life Oregon Trail, a wagon route that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon back in the 1800s) had earned an R rating for “strong violence, language and some sexual references.” Now a trailer for the film has arrived online – and this trailer reveals the surprising news that Organ Trail is getting a limited theatrical release on April 14th. That’s right, this movie is going to start playing on the big screen tomorrow! You can take a look at the trailer in the embed above.

Last year, we heard the awesome news that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to a horror Western project with the brilliant title Organ Trail (inspired by the real life Oregon Trail, a wagon route that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon back in the 1800s). The film has since made its way through production, and while we still don’t know when exactly Paramount intends to release Organ Trail, it has taken an important step toward its release: it has secured a rating from the Motion Picture Association. Organ Trail has earned an R rating for “strong violence, language and some sexual references.”

When it comes to creating buzzy online content for their hundreds of thousands of followers, the Lewberger trio — Keith Habersberger, Alex Lewis and Hughie Stone Fish — are mavericks.
Formed in 2016, the comedy music group has become a poster child for how to be successful in the social media age, and increasingly among fervid musical theater fandoms. Viral Broadway covers, along with earlier career appearances on America’s Got Talent, Bring The Funny and collaborations with Habersberger’s other gig The Try Guys, have helped garner the musicians countless fans.
It’s also helped the band wrack up enough social capital to produce their own shows, including a very short L.A. run of what has since become an Off-Broadway musical, Lewberger & The Wizard of Friendship.
“This show is very much catered to the way that we interact together and catered to the way that our actual friendship is,” Lewis says. “The...

Marc Maron has reflected on his disastrous audition for Avatar 2.
Last year, James Cameron released the much-delayed sequel, tilted Avatar: The Way of Water, to his 2009 blockbuster.
Sam Worthington returns in the role of Jake Sully who leads his family through a difficult war against the humans who are trying to rob Pandora of its resources.
One of the scientists in charge of the operation is played by Jemaine Clement, best known for Flight of the Conchords.
During a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Maron, 59, revealed that he also went up for the role.
“That was ridiculous. Why the f*** would I want that job?” Maron said. “[James Cameron] is not a bad guy, I don’t think. I don’t know.

If you’re one of the many who contributed to Avatar: The Way of Water‘s 2 billion dollar gross, you may have noticed comedic actor Jemaine Clement, of Flight of the Conchords, as one of the human villains (although he’s somewhat sympathetic), Dr. Ian Garvin. As it turns out, according to Variety, James Cameron was seeing other comedic actors for the role as comedian Marc Maron speaks about his experience auditioning for the water-based epic on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
Maron explained, “That was ridiculous. Why the f*ck would I want that job? There’s this assumption that we’re going to do four ‘Avatar’ movies. Dude, I don’t even remember the first one! I don’t know what this all means to the world. [James Cameron] built this city down there [at his Long Beach studio]. There’s people doing acrobatics down there, people flying…it’s like Cirque du Soleil down there.

You’d certainly recognise him if you saw him: from his first walk-on TV part as a video store clerk in an episode of Seinfeld, Oswalt has appeared on nearly every comedy show from Flight of the Conchords to Futurama, Bob’s Burgers to Parks and Recreation.

The current slate of adult animation is about to get a lot more Aussie-ome. Get it? Like awesome? But a pun on Australia? Fine, I don't need your laughs to know that I'm funny. Joining Hulu's already stellar line-up of original series like "Solar Opposites" and "Hit-Monkey" comes "Koala Man," a superhero comedy about an average dad named Kevin, the It coordinator for the Depto town council with a relentless quest for justice. When he's feeling especially compelled, Kevin adapts the alter-ego of Koala Man, a superhero identity that allows Kevin to be the hero he feels he could never be in his normal, civilian life. It doesn't matter if the day's crime is battling interdimensional aliens or making sure neighborhood lawns aren't out of control, Koala Man is here to make sure everyone is adhering to the rules of the world. We're still a few months away until it premieres,...

Issa Rae is calling out the film and TV industry.
“I found that there has been a laziness in the industry,” the Emmy winner told Vulture. “Post–George Floyd, I got so many emails from people who were well-intentioned but were like, ‘Hey, I want to do better. Can you tell me some of the people you’ve worked with who you recommend?’ And I was like, ‘Bitch, go find them like I did! I found them! Do the work! Watch their shorts!'”
The multi-hyphenate showrunner inked a 40 million, five-year deal with WarnerMedia last year, but Rae reflected on the many barriers when she was first starting out.
“In college, I was trying to break into the industry. I had a writing partner, and we submitted scripts to Sundance. We became semifinalists,” Rae said. “We met with all these executives in L.A. to try to sell a film.

Early in 2010, Bret McKenzie decided it was about time he started guitar lessons. The New Zealand-born actor and songwriter enrolled himself in a class at the Silverlake Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, a music school founded in 2001 by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea. McKenzie’s new guitar teacher was naturally curious about what had inspired him to head back to school alongside children and beginners. He told him he had a show coming up. “He was like: ‘Oh that’s good, where are you playing?’” recalls the 46-year-old in his broad Kiwi accent. Sitting in the light and airy home studio above his garage in Wellington, he contorts his more-salt-than-pepper beard into an awkward grimace. “I was like: ‘Er, yeah... we’re playing the Hollywood Bowl.” He bursts out laughing. “Something very strange happened there.”

In all the hubbub around Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming updates this week, nobody bothered to note that we’ve been here before. This isn’t first time a version of the company — or at least a version of it — killed off a finished project for the sake of a write-off with no regard for its creators.
Of course, it’s hard to look at the past when much there is to ponder in the present: “Batgirl” won’t come out but the scandal-ridden “Flash” somehow will; older HBO Max titles have been quietly booted from the service; executives on the earnings call proclaimed confidence in plans to jam together two vastly different streaming services into an amorphous new entity that still has no name.

Jemaine Clement has played plenty of colorful, oddball characters since his breakthrough turn in the musical comedy series "Flight of the Conchords." An eccentric, plagiarist author in "Gentlemen Broncos," a time-traveling alien villain in "Men in Black 3," the vampire Vladislav in "What We Do in the Shadows," and the shiny giant crab Tamatoa in "Moana" are just some of the characters Clement has inhabited on the big screen. But in "Nude Tuesday," a new comedy playing at the Tribeca Film Festival this month, the New Zealand native gets weirder than ever as the sex guru leader of a free-spirited, erotic commune....

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Our Flag Means Death” Season 1, Episodes 9 and 10, “Act of Grace” and “Wherever You Go, There You Are” — the first season’s finale.]
After weeks of curiosity, hope, and intense fan ‘shipping, “Our Flag Means Death” delivered the kiss many dared not believe was coming in its Season 1 finale. Having escaped death by execution and facing a life in the King’s Royal Navy, Stede “The Gentleman Pirate” Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Ed “Blackbeard” Teach (Taika Waititi) recognize their burgeoning relationship is more than a platonic friendship, and share their own intimate act of grace.
