Image Credit: @somesayimmodest Like many others in my generation, the original Sailor Moon series was their entry into the world of anime. Of course, there was Pokémon , Dragon Ball Z , and Mobile Suit Gundam Wing , but Sailor Moon was the first time many young watchers saw a female heroine protagonist. With a large focus on shonen series growing up, Sailor Moon was a pivotal series that grabbed the attention of us who maybe didn’t know it at the time, but needed to see a young woman who was powerful, quick-witted, and represented all things cutesy. After almost 30 years of airing in the US and the 2023 Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos movie release, Sailor Moon has proven time and time again that it dominates the shojo sphere and is backed by a community of fans with unwavering passion. One person who is not shy to share her love of Sailor...

Exclusive: Netflix continues its push into close-ended procedurals with Pain & Suffering, an hourlong series in development from Don Todd, creator of the streamer’s 2023 limited series Florida Man.
Described as a new way into a fun episodic crime-solving show, Pain & Suffering centers on a curmudgeonly, misanthropic insurance adjuster whose job is coldly assigning monetary value to human lives, teams up with a homicide cop to look beyond the numbers and become the reluctant solver of overlooked murders.
Todd is writing the script and executive producing. Aaron Kaplan executive produces for Kapital Entertainment, which is the studio. Kevin Marco is the creative executive for Kapital. A rep for Netflix declined comment.
After building its streaming business on serialized, bingeable series, Netflix has been looking to supplement that with original broadcast-style close-ended procedurals, starting with the upcoming Pulse, its first medical procedural.

ESPN’s Chris Fowler may find himself in an unusual position when he’s in the middle of calling one of the college football games slated for broadcast on ABC or ESPN. He may look up at a monitor during a commercial break and see himself talking to millions of viewers — even though the network is showing nothing but ads.
That’s because Fowler, well known to sports fans thanks to years of calling ABC’s Saturday-night college football games and hosting ESPN’s long-running “College GameDay,” is an integral part of a new ad campaign from Heineken’s Dos Equis that seeks to make the beer a critical part of the game experience. In addition to commercials that feature Fowler acting as a coach, Dos Equis has been running a sweepstakes that could reward contestants when teams “go for dos” and attempt a two-point conversion.

Before he became one of the most underappreciated characters on "The Big Bang Theory," actor Kevin Sussman was set to play a member of the show's core group. According to Jessica Radloff's book "The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series," series co-creator Chuck Lorre and pilot director (and sitcom history legend) William Burrows didn't just want Sussman for the role of Howard Wolowitz –- they wrote it for him. In fact, the actor who would go on to play comic book shop owner Stuart Bloom was at one point even hired to play Howard, but the deal dissolved quickly for a bizarre reason.
According to Radloff's book, Sussman originally auditioned for the part of Leonard, and while he wasn't a perfect fit, producers wanted him on the show. "We loved him, especially after...

Disney’s long-expected move to fold ABC Signature into 20th Television brings to an end the media conglom’s in-house TV studio, which started off as Touchstone Television a decade before Disney bought ABC, subsequently being renamed ABC Studios and more recently ABC Signature.
Launched in 1985, Touchstone TV’s first major hit was Golden Girls, which ran on NBC for seven seasons. Other successful series from that era include Blossom, also for NBC, and Home Improvement, Ellen and Boy Meets World for ABC.
In the first years after ABC became part of Disney, Touchstone Television continued to sell to all networks — which is how 20th Television operated for its entire run at Fox — with shows such as Felicity and Popular for the WB and The PJs for Fox/WB.
The studio gradually shifted its attention to its own network, supplying it with series such as Once And Again, My Wife And Kids,...

Based on the Colombian telenovela "Yo soy Betty, la fea," the ABC sitcom "Ugly Betty" ran for four seasons from 2006 to 2010 and helped make lead actress America Ferrera into a major star. So why did it get canceled so quickly? Will there ever be a reunion? Oh, and also — what was "Ugly Betty" about, besides a girl named Betty who isn't as "pretty" as other women?
The show stars America Ferrera as the titular Betty Suarez, who, despite her braces and admittedly strange fashion sense, lands a job at Mode Magazine in Manhattan as an assistant to notorious womanizer Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius). Along the way, Betty ends up making some unlikely friends and allies, including Daniel himself — the two have a genuinely wholesome friendship, actually — but also has to face off against the imperious creative director of Mode, Wilhelmina Slater (Vanessa Williams), as...

The Grey’s Anatomy season 21 premiere left fans with quite a lot to process as the episode ended with a series of cliffhangers, but it also ended on a bit of an unexpectedly somber note in the form of a dedication that has piqued the curiosity of the show’s longtime fans.
“In memory of Stephanie Leifer,” read the dedication card that aired at the conclusion of the season 21 premiere. It was a moment designed to pay tribute to Leifer, who played a key role behind the scenes in helping bring Grey’s Anatomy to our screens.
Liefer was a former ABC executive who spent almost three decades working at ABC before stepping away from the company in 2022. Sadly, Liefer passed away this June at the age of 56 after a battle with cancer and the dedication card was a way to honor the late executive.

Elsbeth is back as the new trailer for season 2 shows some of the big-time guest stars our new favorite investigator runs into!
The series was the surprise hit of the 2024 TV season, and it sees Carrie Preston reprising her Emmy-winning role as Elsbeth Tascioni, the wildly eccentric attorney from The Good Wife and The Good Fight. Now in New York City to aid the NYPD, Elsbeth soon gets involved in murder investigations where her quirky mind lets her figure out clues.
Season 1 had the overall arc that Elsbeth had been secretly sent to investigate Captain Wagner (Wendell Pierce) for possible corruption. It turned out Wagner was innocent, and it was his supposed friend who was using his name to commit crimes. The captain wasn't happy about this and briefly wanted Elsbeth gone.
However, Wagner realized Elsbeth was helpful in cases and let her stay as a police consultant. He also...

Season 2 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is a hit, at least according to Amazon. The season was viewed by 40 million people in its first 11 days, per internal metrics provided by Prime Video.
The season is currently one of the Top 5 most-watched Prime Video seasons. The streamer also revealed that an “impressive amount” of the audience for “The Rings of Power” has come from outside of the U.S. and that the series reached the No. 1 spot globally on Prime Video in its first 11 days. Season 1 has also seen a boost with “tens of millions” of viewers tuning into the first season. Because Prime Video — like Apple TV+, Hulu, Peacock, Paramount+ and basically every streamer at this point that isn’t Netflix — is notoriously secretive with its viewership stats, it’s difficult to know exactly how well Season 2 is performing compared to other Prime Video originals.

Reboots are a dime a dozen in Hollywood. But with the smashing success of Prime Video’s “Betty La Fea: The Story Continues,” better known in the U.S. by its English version “Ugly Betty,” Amazon found untapped enthusiasm for beloved Latin American IP over 20 years after it first aired, underlining the benefit of international expansion in the midst of the streaming wars.
Created by Fernando Gaitán for the Colombian network Rcn, “Yo soy Betty, la fea” followed the adventures of Beatriz Pinzón Solano (Ana María Orozco), a secretary with braces, bad bangs and an even worse wardrobe, who falls in love with her playboy boss Armando Mendoza (Jorge Enrique Abello). The show followed Betty’s transformation from an eager assistant helping her supervisor hide financial wrongdoing, into a confident and beautiful executive who takes over as president of the clothing manufacturing company where she works — while her playboy reformed into a doting husband.

The show was televised in 180 countries, dubbed in 15 languages, and remade into 28 international adaptations - with one of the most prominent remakes starring America Ferrera as "Ugly Betty."
In "Betty La Fea" - and every rendition thereafter - Betty's long, frizzy dark hair, oversized glasses, mouth full of braces, and bushy eyebrows elicited unwarranted disgust and ire from most of her coworkers. Her looks were the throughline of every episode, which was fitting, given that the Spanish title translates to "I Am Betty, the Ugly One." But for countless Latines who grew up watching the show, Betty was a beacon of hope for...

Thirty-four performers across diverse backgrounds received Primetime Emmy nominations today which is even with last year when the Television Academy recognized the same number of nominees in the acting and reality hosting categories.
This year’s count remains above the 2019 low of 26 non-Caucasian actors and reality hosts, yet still far from 2021’s record 49 nominees.
The biggest gain this year was with indigenous performers with Under the Bridge‘s Lily Gladstone and True Detective: Night Country‘s Kali Reis both nominated in the category of Supporting Actress Limited Series, Anthology or Movie.
Also breaking through is Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai who landed a nom in Comedy Series Lead Actor. The Oji-Cree First Nations and Guyanese actor portrays Bear Smallhill on the FX series, which finally landed a Best Comedy Series nod after three years on the air; the show ultimately ending. Is this the year of Selena Gomez?
After a historic best actress win at the Cannes Film Festival for her turn in Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” which she shared with her castmates Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz, the influential superstar of Hulu’s murder-mystery romp “Only Murders in the Building” just landed her first acting nomination for her role as the dry-witted Mabel Mora, a resident of the Upper West Side apartment building, the Arconia.
Competing against Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Maya Rudolph (“Loot”) and Kristen Wiig (“Palm Royale”), Gomez is the fourth Latina to be nominated in the category’s history following Rita Moreno for “9 to 5” in 1983, America Ferrera’s two noms for “Ugly Betty” in 2007 and 2008 and Jenna Ortega for “Wednesday” last year. In 2023 – 16 years after earning her first Best Comedy Guest Actress Emmy nomination for “Ugly Betty” – Judith Light achieved that honor for her work in an episode of “Poker Face.” Among her challengers was Becky Ann Baker (“Ted Lasso”), who, as a former nominee for “Girls,” joined her in entering the category’s club of contenders for multiple series. Scroll through our photo gallery to find out who else belongs to this special group.
Including Light, 12 of the 26 actresses on this roster triumphed on at least one of their outings. George Lucas changed pop culture forever when he created the sci-fi space opera Star Wars. The film was noted for its groundbreaking special effects and sound and was the highest-grossing film at the time. Though the multi-billion dollar franchise has experimented (not always successfully) with its tone, it falters in one thing that its rival did.
The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds saw the first musical episode in the franchise’s history. The episode was well-received by audiences, despite the negative popularity of the genre, and has a decent 6.9 rating on IMDb.

Betty White was TV royalty. All she had to do was pop in, and viewers would sit up, aware they were in the presence of greatness whether they'd ever watched a minute of "The Golden Girls" or absorbed it purely through cultural osmosis. White's legacy goes far beyond playing lovable simpleton Rose on Susan Harris' legendary sitcom (though the character could be hella savage when the occasion called for it), but she spent much of her third act putting her razor-sharp comedic sensibilities to work in a never-ending string of small screen roles. Sitcoms, obviously, were her specialty; "Ally McBeal," "The Ellen Show," "That '70s Show," "Malcolm in the Middle," "Ugly Betty," "30 Rock," and "Community" all brought in White for an episode or more, as did the animated likes of "The Simpsons," "King of the Hill," "Family Guy," and "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy."

Not much is publicly known about Robert Shinn, the elusive and mysterious founder of 7M Films and the pastor of Shekinah Church – as seen in Netflix docuseries Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult. Indeed, Shinn seems to prefer to stick to the background and let the talent assembled by his agency get all of the attention.
Founded by Shinn and son Isaiah Shinn, 7M Films is not the biggest talent agency in the world, or the most successful, but it might be one of the most viral. 7M traditionally has not been looking to boost working actors to new heights, but to tap into a talented community of self-motivated dancers, singers, musicians, and performers who have the skills necessary to go viral on TikTok with a little help from 7M. However, viral videos and brand partnerships aren’t Robert Shinn’s first attempt at getting a taste of Hollywood glory.

Over the course of its 12-year-old run, The Big Bang Theory has never lost sight of any of the four main characters with each and every single one of them being extremely different from the others.
Apart from omnipresent Sheldon and Leonard, the show also featured their long-time close friend Howard Wolowitz portrayed by Simon Helberg throughout the whole series.

It’s often said it’s not the awards people remember, but the movies themselves. And though America Ferrera may not have won Best Supporting Actress tonight for Barbie, her speech on behalf of all hardworking women in the feature film about the Mattel doll is one for the eras.
“It’s been amazing — to be part of something that hits the culture the way that it did. And it made history, and to have been the human and to deliver Gloria’s journey and to have that be so embraced by the audience, is so wonderful. It speaks to people’s desires to be seen and to hear the truth or what feels true to them,” Ferrera told Deadline’s Antonia Blyth on the Oscar red carpet tonight.
Asked whether she was up for Barbie 2, Ferrera said, “Yeah, we’ll see” then trying to play coy went “Um, bye!

South Africa’s Known Associates, the fast-growing parent company of Johannesburg-based Known Associates Entertainment (Kae) and Cape Town-based Moonlighting Films, is launching into unscripted programming, Variety can reveal.
The company has acquired a 60% stake in Zero Gravity, a production outfit founded in 2017 by former Endemol Shine Africa and Trace Studios CEO Sivan Pillay, and will team up with South African media giant Primedia to “relaunch multiple new high-end unscripted formats,” according to Pillay. Though specific titles covered by that agreement have not been finalized, Primedia’s catalog includes hit series “The Masked Singer,” “Deal or No Deal” and “Ready Steady Cook.”
“For us, it’s a natural progression,” said Known Associates chairperson Joel Phiri at the Joburg Film Festival. “We’re bringing our production expertise, and it’s keeping in line with our acquiring [production services giant] Moonlighting [in 2022]. It’s linking with our servicing facilities and growing that side of the business.”
