According to the press release, Gale Force Nine will produce the original tabletop games "drawing from the full scope of the Dune franchise—spanning the many publications from Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson—along with multiple direct tie-ins with Legendary’s highly anticipated film from director Denis Villeneuve."
It's pretty cool that the whole thing will also tie into the upcoming film that Villeneuve is currently developing. In addition, GF9 plans to align with other game companies in numerous categories and formats in the future.

MaryAnn’s quick take… This is no twee old-lady adventure. The magnificent Sheila Hancock crafts a portrait of elder womanhood as a tangy triumph of risk-taking over regret, and resolution over resignation. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film
(learn more about this)
Stories about women taking enormous life-and-limb risks are not ones we tell often. Instead we tell stories about women fulfilling their responsibilities: to children and to husbands, mostly. Well, “I did my duty,” growls 85-year-old Londoner Edie (Sheila Hancock: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas), who spent years caring for her difficult disabled husband, who was an asshole even before his stroke. But after he dies, she’s nowhere near ready for the depressing care home her daughter (Wendy Morgan) wants to put her in.

Director Simon Hunter on making Edie and the extraordinary stamina of Sheila Hancock
Edie tells the story of an elderly lady played by Sheila Hancock who after a bitter and miserable life decides to release herself from a unfulfilled life by heading off to Scotland to climb a mountain and rekindle some of the magic of her youth.
The last film I directed was a science fiction movie called Mutant Chronicles which was a pretty brutal affair. All indoors with 2000 visual effects shots, it took over two and a half years to complete.

Mutant Chronicles and Lighthouse director Simon Hunter is back after a long hiatus with a new film, this time not a genre piece, but a poignant drama about aging and redemption called Edie. Based on an original idea by Hunter, Edie tells the story of an 83-year-old woman who, when faced with the prospect of life in an old folks home, sets off to rekindle her fond memories of childhood by heading to Scotland to climb a mountain. Filmed on location at Suilven Mountain in Sutherland, Scotland, the film is quite gorgeous to look at. Hunter is know for his flair for visuals and Edie looks like no exception. Edie stars Bafta nominated actress Sheila Hancock, Paul Brannigan and Kevin Guthrie. The film will premiere at...

Th film stars Anna Walton (Mutant Chronicles), Sam Hazeldine (The Monuments Men), Naomi Battrick and Patrick Gibson. And, the first clip is full of Pagan imagery and motifs; the teaser trailer beckons you below. The film focuses on a witches' coven. Faith (Battrick) is drawn to them, after the death of her father. However, the coven wants something from Faith, her baby! This baby, borne of fire, threatens humanity and Faith just wants to escape their devilish clutches. Josh Boone's career is off to a fast start, beginning with the success of The Fault in Our Stars, which then translated into a gig adapting Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles at Universal and plans for an adaptation of Stephen King's "The Stand" at Warner Bros. Now he's taking on another big project at another major studio as he will begin work on the X-Men franchise spinoff The Mutant Chronicles at Fox, which he will direct and co-write with Jackass producer Knate Gwaltney. The New Mutants is a group of teenaged mutant superheroes-in-training including characters such as Cannonball, Karma, Mirage, Sunspot and Wolfsbane and apparently served as the comic introduction to Deadpool, which may hint at a possible tie-in with the upcoming movie starring Ryan Reynolds. "We're so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe," producer Simon Kinberg told Deadline. "And so excited to do it with Josh,...

Lionsgate has picked up the film rights to "Dust," the tabletop game and graphic novel, and attached Rawson Marshall Thurber ("We're the Millers," "Dodgeball") to direct.
The story is set in an alternate-history, steampunk-themed version of the 1940s where World War II never ended. The world is now divided into three blocs: The Allies (Us, France, British Commonwealth), The Axis (Germany, Japan), and The Ssu (China, Soviet Union).
The discovery of new ore leads to the creation of combat robots. Italian fantasy illustrator Paolo Parente, who worked on role-playing games Mutant Chronicles and Magic: The Gathering, created the franchise.
The project is now out to writers and Dan Lin ("The Lego Movie") will produce the film.

Best known for comedies like Dodgeball and We're The Millers, writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber is taking a rather different direction for a future project. He's developing a movie based on the board game and graphic novel Dust, which has just found a home at studio Lionsgate. Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes, The Lego Movie) is producing. Not to be confused with the god simulator From Dust, this Dust is based on the tabletop strategy game by Paolo Parente. Parente went solo to create the game after working on Magic: The Gathering and Mutant Chronicles, and spun it into enough of a cult success that it now has its own convention in Arizona.Players work their way through scenarios in a steampunk 1940s where World War II is still raging and the world has been divided into three blocs. Based around a cards-and-dice system, the aim is to rack up 'victory...

After a bombardment of terrible sequels and remakes, the horror movie genre is undergoing something of a renaissance of late with the excellent Babadook and this week's It Follows leading the charge.
Both films are driven by strong performances from up-and-coming female stars (Essie Davis and Maika Monroe), which brings to mind a classic horror movie trope: the Final Girl. Most prevalent in slasher films, the Final Girl is the last character standing who confronts a killer/ghost/demon and lives to tell the tale.
Digital Spy looks back at 7 of our favourite horror movie Final Girls, why they're iconic and what they're up to now...
1. Neve Campbell - Sidney Prescott in Scream
Many horror fans thought Drew Barrymore would end up being Scream's Final Girl when they first watched Wes Craven's 1996 horror, but the director offed her in the opening moments leaving Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott to face down Ghostface.

Cherry Tree is another film coming this way via Ireland. Irish director David Keating is helming this feature, along with writer Brendan McCarthy. The film begins with a struggling family and a witches' coven. The film stars Anna Walton (Mutant Chronicles), Sam Hazeldine (The Monuments Men), Naomi Battrick and Patrick Gibson. The film's first poster is here. At the heart of the film grows a cherry tree. This cherry tree can help Faith's (Battrick) father, who is slowly dying. The tree's powers promise rebirth, but Faith must make a sacrifice, first. The film's poster shows a witch's gnarled hand and fruit from the tree. Reminiscent of an ancient biblical tale, evil tempts a young woman to eat from a forbidden tree. From the creators of Wake Wood, Cherry Tree will be released later this year! Release Date: 2014. Director: David Keating. Writer: Brendan McCarthy. Cast: Anna Walton, Sam Hazeldine, Naomi Battrick and Patrick Gibson.

Here is our first look at season two of the TV anthology series based on the Heavy Metal comic books (or, Metal Hurlant if you're from Europe). The first episode is called "The Endomorphe" and with its vaguely WWII trench-style look and, well, mutants, I can't help but see a striking resemblance to Simon Hunter's visually striking Mutant Chronicles.
I don't think the first season ever aired on TV domestically, but the Blu-ray is available in various regions.
Metal Hurlant Chronicles Season 2 stars Michael Jai White, Darren Shalahvi, Michelle Lee, Fabien Houssaye, Silvio Simac and Alexis Dumas.

Matt Forbeck, author of Amortals, Vegas Knights, and The Mutant Chronicles novelization, the Magic: The Gathering comic for Idw, and creator of the Brave New World RPG (with concepts that predated Marvel’s Civil War by years), is setting an ambitious goal for himself, and is asking for you to help torture him:
I’d like to write a dozen novels in 2012, and I want you to dare me to do it.
This is the first part of my 12 for ’12 project, a year-long challenge in which I plan to write a novel every month in 2012.
It may not be as insane as it sounds. By novel, I mean a work of fiction that’s at least 50,000 words, a bit shorter than most my novels, which tend toward 80,000 words. The Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards each define a novel as anything over 40,000 words, but I want to be a bit more ambitious.

Angels. Demons. Doesn't matter what they are. A troublemaker is a troublemaker, and that's exactly what the fine folks in The Called will be facing off against.
According to Screen Daily producer Tim Dennison is developing the supernatural thriller The Called through his new UK company Tall Man Films.
UK filmmaker Niall Johnson will direct and has written the screenplay "about two men whose experience with a demonized angel in their youth comes back to haunt them."
Johnson previously wrote another supernatural thriller, White Noise.
Dennison, who produced Mutant Chronicles with Ed Pressman in 2008 before going out on his own earlier this year, is currently in talks with financiers with a view to shooting the film in London and a coastal location in spring 2012.

To be honest I’m surprised someone didn’t come up with sooner. Deadline reports that Simon Hunter has been signed to direct Last Blood, an adaptation of a graphic novel released by Keenspot. Last Blood takes place after a zombie apocalypse in which the walking dead has overrun humans and are slowly hunting them into extinction. This doesn’t bode well for the vampire population, who need the human blood to survive, so they decide to mount an offensive against the undead threat.
Hunter is perhaps best known for the 2009 low budget sci-fi movie Mutant Chronicles starring Thomas Jane. And if you know him from that, you are probably nervous that his new project will turn out just as bad. The movie’s production is being handled by a company called Benderspink, who obtained the rights back in 2008.

Mutant Chronicles director Simon Hunter has been hired to direct a live-action adaptation of the vampire graphic novel Last Blood.
The graphic novel was created by Chris and Bobby Cosby, and the story takes place “after a zombie apocalypse, when vampires must battle to protect the last surviving humans to keep alive the necessary blood supply.”
That plot sounds a lot like the Ethan Hawk vampire film Daybreakers, but with a zombie apocalypse. I’ve become very skeptical of vampire movies like this because these days they rarely turn out good, but I’m still willing to give this a chance because you never know, it could actually turn out being a really good movie.
I'm still not sure about director Simon Hunter, Mutant Chronicles ended up not being as good as I was hoping. Do you think this will end up turning out to be a good movie?

Comic-Con used to be a comic, sci-fi and fan convention, but nowadays the annual affair has become so mainstream that every high-concept horror, science fiction and thriller feature -- no matter its comic or cult roots -- gets big play in San Diego. So it's refreshing when there's an announcement at Comic-Con about a an actual graphic novel (albeit an online one) being turned into a film. That would be 'Last Blood,' written by Bobby Crosby and illustrated by Owen Gieni, which takes place after a zombie apocalypse when vampires must protect the last surviving humans so they can live off their blood. As Age Of The Dragons arrives on DVD and Blu-ray, Duncan takes a look at the history of dragons in the movies…
It's no wonder so many of us have grown up geeky, for dragons have been a strong mainstay of children's movies for decades now. With their inextricable link to the fantasy genre, many of us have been brainwashed into a fixation with them before we even knew what was happening. Well, that's a decent enough excuse, anyway, should you ever find yourself needing one in a dragon-based argument, which I'm sure there aren't nearly enough of.
Pity the children growing up from the mid-nineties onwards, as they've barely been able to make it through one whole year without a dragon movie being released, a trend which sees no sign of slowing. This year has already seen the release of Age Of The Dragons, starring Danny Glover and Vinnie Jones...
