“Oppenheimer” is the most nominated film at this year’s Oscars with 13 nominations. That’s one shy of the all-time record of 14 nominations so it missed out on Oscars history in the nomination phase.
However, Universal’s movie could match Academy Awards history in the awards phase by equalling the record of 11 Oscar wins overall. So far, three films have won 11 Academy Awards. They were “Ben-Hur” in 1960, “Titanic” in 1998, and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Here’s the breakdown of what awards they won.
“Ben-Hur”

“Oppenheimer” took home an impressive seven Academy Awards at Sunday’s Oscars, including the night’s top prize of Best Picture. The Universal movie also won Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Actor for Cillian Murphy amongst a number of other awards. That is one below the total of eight wins we predicted for the film as “The Zone of Interest” beat the movie to win Best Sound. However, seven is still a huge tally and places “Oppenheimer” amongst the Best Picture winners to take home the highest amount of Oscars this century. Scroll down below for a complete list of every Best Picture winner this century ranked by total Oscar wins.

It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Amblin TV has built its reputation over the past three decades as one of the industry’s busiest boutiques, producing scripted series across all major platforms that range from popcorn to prestige.
But in recent years, there’s been a new storytelling target for Amblin TV chiefs Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, who have headed Steven Spielberg’s TV production banner (previously DreamWorks TV) for more than 20 years. Amblin TV has moved aggressively into documentary feature and docu-series arena. It’s a development motivated by business necessity but also the desire to add more colors and canvases to the overall Amblin TV palette.
This year, the company fielded a surprise hit with a nature documentary for Netflix, “Life on Our Planet,” which topped the streamers’ domestic viewing charts for multiple weeks after its release in late October. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” swept the 2023 Oscars by winning seven Academy Awards. In that seven were six above-the-line awards, which is an Oscars record. Seven Oscars is also the most amount any film has won in a single year since “Gravity” also won seven in 2014. But that movie didn’t win Best Picture (“12 Years a Slave” did), so what about Best Picture winners only? Well, here’s every single Best Picture winner this century ranked by the number of Oscars it won.

The 95th Academy Awards are behind us now, and one of the most interesting categories was Best Original Song. Winning an Oscar for an original song is definitely a prestigious honor, but perhaps the second most coveted prize for original movie music is the Grammy. Being voted on by two different academies means there’s bound to be a lot of discrepancies between the awards, especially with different voting deadlines and eligibility rules. With that in mind, what Oscar winning songs have also managed to get at least one Grammy nomination?

Since "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" was the last time Peter Jackson expected to be a part of the Tolkien universe, he needed the perfect song to end his sprawling cinematic journey across the magical Middle-earth. Although /Film called it "the worst Peter Jackson hobbit movie, "Five Armies" is elevated by the moving ballad "The Last Goodbye" in the end credits.
"The Last Goodbye" creates a full-circle moment by having Billy Boyd, who famously played the cheeky hobbit Pippin in the original trilogy, write and sing. This song serves as a callback to one of his most well-known scenes from "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" where he sings "The Edge of Night" for a scowling Denethor. Similar to "The Last Goodbye," it is a quiet piece composed by Boyd where his character reflects on the dangers of war and lost friendships. Boyd...

The lore of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth is vast and sometimes confusing. There's over 9,000 years worth of intricate history that film and television has not even touched on. For those who have been watching Amazon's "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," it's been exciting to explore new corners of Middle-earth and the early lives of beloved characters like Galadriel (Morfydd Clark). One of the key places that we are introduced to in the first episodes of the series is Valinor, also known as the Undying Lands. It is a tranquil, sprawling land where Galadriel grew up that she describes as a "winterless spring."
In "The Return of the King" novel, Tolkien depicts Frodo's experience in Valinor:
"Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water ... the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back,...

Composer Geoff Zanelli is the man behind the music of Showtime’s “The First Lady,” the anthology series documenting the political lives of Michelle Obama (Viola Davis), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson). Zanelli won an Emmy for his score of another historical project, 2005’s “Into the West” which focused on American expansion during the 1800s. However, the composer tells Gold Derby that the history is not what really interests him. “I’m not really a history buff,” he declares. “I’m a story buff and I’m a character buff, and that’s what I’m interested in.” Watch more of our exclusive video interview with Zanelli above.

Emmy-award winning composer Geoff Zanelli is slated to compose the music for “The First Lady,” premiering on Showtime. The new hour-long anthology drama follows the lives of three of America’s First Ladies and stars Viola Davis as Michelle Obama, Michelle Pfeiffer as Betty Ford and Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt.
Zanelli served as composer of films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “Christopher Robin,” and he won an Emmy award for his work in the Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks miniseries “Into the West.” He also was nominated for HBO’s “The Pacific,” another Spielberg collaboration.
“I’ve had the honor of writing music for ‘The Pacific’ and ‘Into The West,’ both shows about distinct times in America’s history, but nothing as intimate as ‘The First Lady,'” Zanelli said. “We’re so up close and personal in this show.

The Original Django (1966) will be available on 4K Ultra HD with Texas Adios included on Blu-ray May 25th From Arrow Video
In this definitive spaghetti western, Franco Nero gives a career-defining performance as Django, a mysterious loner who arrives at a mud-drenched ghost town on the Mexico-us border, ominously dragging a coffin behind him. After saving imperilled prostitute Maria (Loredana Nusciak), Django becomes embroiled in a brutal feud between a racist gang and a band of Mexican revolutionaries
With Django, director Sergio Corbucci (The Great Silence) upped the ante for sadism and sensationalism in westerns, depicting machine-gun massacres, mud-fighting prostitutes and savage mutilations. A huge hit with international audiences, Django s brand of bleak nihilism would be repeatedly emulated in a raft of unofficial sequels.
The film is presented here in its 4K Uhd Blu-ray debut, with a wealth of extras. Also included is the bonus feature Texas, Adios on Blu-ray,...

On Sunday night, the Writers Guild Awards handed out its screenwriting prizes in a virtual setting, signaling a historic moment for women at the Oscars, specifically the screenplay awards.
Emerald Fennell won best original screenplay for her revenge drama “Promising Young Woman” over Oscar-nominated films “Judas and the Black Messiah”, “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Aaron Sorkin). Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” was not eligible for nomination at the annual guild ceremony. If Fennell manages to win the Oscar for original screenplay, she’ll be the first solo female screenwriter winner of the category since Diablo Cody for “Juno” in 2007.
Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” was ineligible at the WGA Awards, as was fellow Oscar nominee “The Father” from Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller. While a safe bet to win adapted screenplay seemed to be Kemp Powers’ “One Night in Miami,” it was the nine-person writing...

Indigenous actors Tantoo Cardinal, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins and Jillian Dion will all take key roles in the project, based on David Grann’s bestseller about the serial murders of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma.
Cardinal, a preeminent indigenous actress, will play the role of Lizzie Q, mother to Gladstone’s character Mollie Burkhart. Myers, Collins and Dion will play the roles of Mollie’s sisters — Anna, Reta, and Minnie. Jesse Plemons was also previously announced as a co-star.
Scorsese is producing and directing the project from a script by Eric Roth. Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas are also producers, with DiCaprio’s Appian Way Productions.
Cardinal was born in Ft. McMurray, Alberta.

Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra (Kyliegh Curran), a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality.

Beyonce has 23 Grammys (and four more nominations there this year), but she won’t be coming for Oscar next. She co-wrote the original song “Spirit” for the live-action version of “The Lion King.” It would’ve been a moment of redemption after she was disqualified for her songwriting contribution to “Dreamgirls” 13 years ago. But it wasn’t meant to be. She made the shortlist, but missed the cut when the motion picture academy announced its final nominees. Check out of this year’s contenders in all 24 categories here.

“The Song of Names” “offers a really great palette for music,” says composer Howard Shore. “It covers 50 years,” including the periods before, during and after WWII. And the story involves “a virtuoso violinist, so the music score onscreen and the score itself were very appealing to work on.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Shore above.
Directed by Francois Girard, the Sony Pictures Classic release centers on a man (Tim Roth) haunted by the disappearance of his best friend (Clive Owen), a violin prodigy, before a 1951 concert that would’ve launched his promising music career. When he discovers his friend might still be alive, he searches the globe to find him.

Before Shore ever saw the footage for the film he delved into his own research, “filling my mind and intellect up with the period and the music that we chose for the onscreen performances.

Getting people to see a movie in a theater is a craft seemingly as mysterious as anything done to make the movie itself. It’s also one that is open to a wide degree of creativity, as proved by the degree of success Steven Lewis Simpson has achieved for his indie feature “Neither Wolf nor Dog.”
“I opened in certain theaters where I knew the film would do well,” says Simpson, who wrote, directed, produced, shot and edited the picture, and says it has had the longest first theatrical run of any film this decade. “Neither Wolf nor Dog” premiered Jan. 20, 2017, on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and went on to play small towns across the northern United States. It’s played in theaters in a dozen states, and is still booking them. The movie comes for the first time to the Los Angeles area with a run that started Sept.

Lady Gaga shared in the Best Original Song Oscar win for “Shallow.” She sang the smash hit in “A Star is Born” and is credited as a co-writer alongside a trio of men: Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando and Mark Ronson. This win makes make her the 14th woman to take home an Oscar for songwriting. Her co-writers bring the total tally of male winners in this category to a whopping 146.

Shallow, the forlorn signature song from A Star is Born, won the Golden Globe tonight for the best original song in a 2018 film. The award went to the songwriting collective of Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and Anthony Rossomando.
Performed in the film as a duet between Gaga and co-star/director Bradley Cooper, Shallow ironically provided stirring depth to the music industry tale of A Star is Born.
In the film, Cooper plays rocker Jackson Maine, a troubadour talent undermined by gin and pills, who falls hard for Gaga’s Ally, a waitress who aspires to be a singer-songwriter but is stymied again and again.
Ronson, the esteemed music producer, cited the emotional power of Shallow during his acceptance speech as Gaga stood next to him struggling to keep tears back.

Of the 63 people who have gone home with at least two Oscars on the same evening, only four of them have been women. Lady Gaga could well become the fifth woman to make history at the Academy Awards with wins for both Best Actress and Best Original Song (“Shallow) for “A Star is Born.”

Lady Gaga is predicted to win two Oscars for her first film as leading lady: Best Actress and Best Original Song. While she is locked in a tight race for the acting award, with Glenn Close looking for her first win after six losses, Lady Gaga is all but certain to take home the Academy Award for her work on the hit tune “Shallow.”
She is credited as a co-writer with a trio of men: Andrew Wyatt, Anthony Rossomando and Mark Ronson. Should she prevail, she’d become the 11th woman to win an Oscar for composing. The first, Barbra Streisand, also won for writing the music for a song in her version of “A Star is Born.” Back in 1976, Streisand wrote and sang “Evergreen,” which has become one of the top hits in her repertoire.
Since Streisand made Academy Awards history, nine female composers have followed her up to the podium.

There’s no suspense with “Shallow” making the Best Original Song shortlist on December 17. The Lady Gaga/Bradley Cooper duet from “A Star Is Born” has been passionately embraced like no ballad since “Frozen’s” “Let It Go.” In fact, it looks unbeatable for the Oscar.
However, when it comes to rounding out the other nine contenders, there are plenty of memorable possibilities, including “All the Stars” (“Black Panther”), “I’ll Fight” (“Rbg”), “Gravity” (“Free Solo”), “Requiem For A Private War” (“A Private War”), and “The Place Where Lost Things Go” and “Trip A Little Light Fantastic” (“Mary Poppins Returns”).
Plus, there’s “Revelation” (“Boy Erased”), “Here Comes the Change” (“On the Basis of Sex”), “Girl in the Movies” (“Dumplin'”), “We Won’t Move” (“The Hate U Give”), and even “A Place Called Slaughter Race” (“Ralph Breaks the Internet”).
But the biggest story about “Shallow” is how it evolved from...

When Annie Lennox was approached about writing the end title song for A Private War, Matthew Heineman’s searing biopic about war correspondent Marie Colvin, she hesitated because she hadn’t written new music in eight years. Instead Lennox, who won an Academy Award for best original song for “Into the West” from 2003’s Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, has focused on improving women’s rights globally through her Ngo, The Circle. However, she vowed “to try” to write a song because she had such respect for Colvin, who was killed in Syria in 2012 ...

Lady Gaga (“A Star Is Born”) is in a heated Best Actress Oscar race with Glenn Close (“The Wife”) and Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”), but even if she comes up short there, chances are she’ll still leave Oscar night a winner. Gaga is considered a near lock to prevail in Best Original Song with “Shallow,” which would make her just the 14th woman to win the category.
Best Original Song was first introduced at the 7th Academy Awards, honoring the films of 1934, but like nearly all of the non-gendered categories, it’s been dominated by men. Dorothy Fields was the first woman to win the category for co-writing “The Way You Look Tonight” from “Swing Time” (1936) with Jerome Kern, but it would be another 32 years before a second woman triumphed; Marilyn Bergman won for penning “The Windmills of Your Mind” from “The Thomas Crown Affair” (1968) with Michel Legrand and her husband Alan Bergman.

Will Lady Gaga (‘A Star is Born’) be only the 4th woman this century to win two Oscars in one night?
It’s not uncommon for men to win multiple Oscars in the same year given how over-represented they are in directing, producing, sound and various other artistic fields. Women don’t get nearly as many opportunities to wear multiple hats, so it’s predictably a lot rarer for them to accomplish that feat. In fact, it has only happened to three women in the 21st century thus far. But Lady Gaga could be the fourth.
According to our predictions as of this writing, Lady Gaga is the front-runner to win Best Actress for playing an up-and-coming pop singer in “A Star is Born.” She also co-wrote multiple songs on the soundtrack, and while our predictions center is not yet open for Best Original Song, there’s a good chance she’ll be a top contender there too. And if she does win both she’ll join an exclusive club.
