Neil Patrick Harris initially gained recognition for starring in Doogie Howser, M.D., a role that defined much of his early career. It wasn’t until the 2004 buddy comedy film Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle that he managed to break free from the character. The film features the actor portraying a fictionalized version of himself.

It received a positive reception, earning over $19 million at the box office, and served as a turning point for Harris, allowing him to shed his Doogie Howser image and paving the way towards the biggest role of his career as Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother.

The 10 Things I Hate About You cast probably didn’t know it then, but the actors in the 1999 teen rom-com would get their breakout role. In the 25 years since its release, 10 Things I Hate About You has become a cult classic and a career highlight for its actors.
On the surface, 10 Things I Hate About You doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. A William Shakespeare play reworked into a teen comedy featuring a cast of mostly unknown actors? Critics didn’t fall head over heels for it in 1999, but the movie’s appeal has grown over time and attracted new generations of fans (even if sequel plans failed). And if the 10 Things I Hate About You cast was unknown then, now there is no mistaking the talent of stars like Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Anna Nicole Smith died 17 years ago this month, but the fascination with the blond bombshell continues unabated.
Kal Penn is set to star in “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor,” a film that chronicles the final days of the actress and model whose accidental overdose death in 2007 at the age of 39 sparked a tabloid feeding frenzy. “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor,” which is based on Dr. Sandeep Kapoor’s 2017 book of the same name, marks the second film about Smith to move forward in recent months. In late December, the biopic “Hurricanna” wrapped production, with Sylvia Hoeks and Holly Hunter in the lead roles.
Written and directed by Thane Economou (“The Wedding Party”), “Trust Me I’m a Doctor” follows Smith’s pain-medication doctor whose life was turned upside down when he was implicated in the wrongful death trials of the one-time Playboy centerfold. Smith became a household name when she married 89-year-old oil tycoon J.

Well, this is certainly good timing. David Krumholtz, who appears in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” as Isidor Isaac Rabi, one of Oppenheimer’s best friends from an early age, is having a moment. Sure, you probably know Krumholtz from roles in movies like “The Santa Clause” franchise (1994–present), “10 Things I Hate About You” (1999), the “Harold & Kumar” film trilogy (2004–2011), or the CBS drama series “Numb3rs,” but the actor has lit up social media in the last two weeks with a kind of Dgaf attitude.

Obliterated has lived up to its name. Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of the hourlong action-comedy series.
The cancellation comes as a little bit of a surprise as Obliterated spent a respectable six weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for English-language series following its Nov. 30 release, peaking at No.1 in Week 2. The streamer largely bases its renewal decisions on analyzing viewing vs. cost.
From Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, Obliterated tells the story of an elite Special Forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovered that a bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now-intoxicated team had to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb and save the world.

The near-constant rotation of villains in the seven seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" provided ample opportunity for guest stars, and some of these roles went to some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Sitcom star John Ritter is a killer robot in the season 2 episode "Ted," Kal Penn of "Harold & Kumar" plays the victim of a cursed beer in season 4, and "Enchanted" star Amy Adams is featured as Tara's estranged cousin in an episode of season 5. But even in that star-studded milieu, some of the most unforgettable performances in the series were given by breakout actors and indie darlings, like SAG Award-winning multihyphenate Clea DuVall.
You might have forgotten that DuVall made an appearance in "Buffy" — in fact, the actor's character didn't appear very much on-screen at all. In "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," DuVall plays Sunnydale High School student Marcie Ross, a girl who is so shy she turns invisible,...

Kal Penn hopes the second time’s the charm.
The actor last week completed his second turn behind the desk of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” which has been seeking a successor to host Trevor Noah for the better part of a year, a process that was delayed by the recent Hollywood labor strikes. Penn joins comedians Sarah Silverman and Leslie Jones as well as Charlamagne Tha God as hosts who were invited to take one more crack at the assignment after doing a previous one.
“It felt like the perfect merger of both of my worlds,” Penn says during an interview with Variety, referring not only to the comic roles he has played it the “Harold & Kumar” series of movies but his time spent as a public engagement liaison in the Obama administration. The hits don’t stop for Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the trio behind Cobra Kai and most recently, Netflix’s latest No. 1 hit, Obliterated.
Obliterated is a return to the trio’s roots which began with raunchy comedies like Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004) and its follow-ups Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008), Harold & Kumar Go to Amsterdam (2008) and A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (2011); American Reunion (2012); Blockers (2018); and Hot Tub Time Machine (2010), among others.
The new 8-episode Netflix series, currently available to stream in its entirety, follows an elite joint-special operations team assembled from various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and intelligence services to stop a deadly terrorist network from blowing up Las Vegas. Obliterated stars Nick Zano, Shelley Hennig, Terrence Terrell, Paola Lázaro, C. Thomas Howell and Eugene Kim.

Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald initially set out to write Obliterated as a feature film. But the creators of Netflix’s latest action comedy changed their minds. They felt their ensemble cast of characters would be best served in a series where they would have time to explore each one in depth, and be able to give each character their own adventure.
The result is the eight-episode series now streaming on Netflix, which follows an elite special forces team — made up of an ensemble cast led by Nick Zano and Shelley Hennig — who wake up with a massive hangover and attempt to break up a deal for a nuclear weapon that could obliterate Las Vegas. Terrence Terrell, Paola Lázaro, Kimi Rutledge, Eugene Kim, C. Thomas Howell, Alyson Gorske and Carl Lumbly round out the cast.

Plot: Obliterated is a high octane action-comedy from the creators of Cobra Kai that tells the story of an elite special forces team who thwarts a deadly threat to Las Vegas. After their celebratory party, filled with booze, drugs and sex, the team discovers that the bomb they deactivated was a fake. The now intoxicated team has to fight through their impairments, overcome their personal issues, find the real bomb, and save the world.
Review: When an elite team of special forces, commandos, and spies team up to save the day, that is usually the end of the story. The credits typically roll on a happy ending once the bad guy is killed and the world is saved. The new series Obliterated looks at what happens when that celebration is premature in a blend of the team action of The A-Team with the drug and alcohol-fueled excess of The Hangover.

It’s been over a decade since Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) last graced our screens, but the stoner duo could finally be returning for Harold & Kumar 4.
Harold & Kumar screenwriters Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg spoke with ComicBook.com to confirm that Harold & Kumar 4 is something that everyone involved wants to do. “Well, first of all, we are dying to make another one. We’ve been a little bit busy lately between Cobra Kai and Obliterated,” the pair said. “We had a dinner not long ago. About a month ago with John (Cho) and Kat (Penn). We’re all talking about making another one. It’s really just a matter of time. It’s figuring out when it could all fit into all of our schedules. It’s something that we’re all determined to do. We just need to find the time to do it.“

Sabrina Wu’s family and friends didn’t really comprehend that they were starring in the raunchy comedy “Joy Ride” alongside Ashley Park, Stephanie Hsu and Sherry Colauntil until the movie hit theaters. Before then, the stand-up comic’s only Hollywood job was as a writer on Disney+’s “Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.” “I remember calling my dad and telling him I got the part,” Wu tells me. “This is verbatim what he said: ‘Sabrina, I can’t wait to show you my new car.’ It went right over his head because it was too bizarre.”
Like their character Deadeye, the 25-year-old Wu uses “they/them” pronouns. They asked that Deadeye not have a big coming-out scene about their gender identity. “I definitely begged them to do it that way because I don’t think this R-rated comedy needed a moment where I’m like, ‘Hey, guys, I’m nonbinary.

Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”
And that’s pretty much it for Amazon Originals this month! Thankfully, there is a huge influx of library content to keep Prime Video subscribers entertained. May 4 sees the...

Of all the unofficial holidays derived from an apocryphal bit police code, 4/20 is by far the most enduring. And just as “420” has gradually become entrenched as stoner shorthand for marijuana, the date April 20 has become an opportunity not just for college kids looking to indulge in a little extralegal fun, but also for drug law reformers and other advocacy groups to stump for a more reasonable national attitude toward America’s big green weed of choice.
And as marijuana laws have shifted over the years—from outright prohibition, to limited medicinal usage, to tightly regulated recreational use within certain states—marijuana themed movies have likewise evolved. Once upon a time, the only movies that even touched the subject of pot were hysterical propaganda pieces like Reefer Madness. Then, from the 1960s onward, weed became a popular (and hip) subject of broad comedy—in everything from Animal House to Annie Hall to Friday.

Anyone growing up in the late ’80s and early ’90s surely remembers the TV show Doogie Howser, M.D. The sitcom made its star, Neil Patrick Harris, a household name. The premise was quite original — it was about a child genius who becomes a doctor as a teenager. Though it was long the role he was most known for, Doogie Howser wasn’t Harris’ first as a child star.

Ah, 1978. It was the year that Slashfilm writer Lee Adams entered the world, and two movies changed the course of comedy forever (those landmarks are unrelated; I'm not trying to claim any credit). Those movies were "National Lampoon's Animal House" and Cheech and Chong's "Up in Smoke" — two lowbrow hits whose influences are still felt to this day.
There was lowbrow stuff before 1978, of course. Slapstick — the age-old art of falling over, breaking things, and hitting people — was still doing the rounds in the increasingly weary adventures of Inspector Clouseau. But the class of '78 was different: wild, irreverent, raucous, bawdy, subversive, counterculture comedy that delighted the kids and antagonized the squares.
The two films had their roots in the '60s. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong developed their stand-up act in the latter part of the decade before making their break on the big screen with the granddaddy of stoner movies,...

Writer/director Parker Finn’s horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) was originally intended to be released through the Paramount Plus streaming service, but it scored so highly at a test screening that the decision was made to give it a theatrical release. That decision really paid off, as the film earned over $200 million at the global box office. Of course, Paramount is hoping for a Smile sequel now – and they might get one soon, as Finn has just signed a multiyear first-look deal with the studio.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, as part of this deal Finn is expected to write, produce and direct features in the horror genre. The studio would love a Smile sequel but it’s not clear what Finn’s next movie will be.

The Masked Singer fans were going nuts for Squirrel’s performances in episode 4 on Wednesday night. The costumed celebrity went head-to-head against Gargoyle in a Battle Royale and came out on top. However, the panelists rang the Ding Dong Keep It On bell, allowing Gargoyle to stay in the competition. We’ve already shared predictions for who is behind the Gargoyle mask, but what about Squirrel? Here’s why many fans believe she’s a Swedish actor.
Squirrel on ‘The Masked Singer’ Season 9 | Michael Becker/Fox Squirrel’s clues and performances on ‘The Masked Singer’
The Squirrel made her debut on The Masked Singer Season 9’s DC Superheroes Night. She wowed the audience and panelists with a cover of P!Nk’s “Try.” Later, in the Battle Royale, she showed off her rock side with “Kryptonite” by 3 Doors Down.
As for the clues, Squirrel had plenty of telling moments in her intro package.

Are you as into “The Masked Singer” as we are? As much as we love watching the over-the-top performances on “The Masked Singer,” we get even more enjoyment from figuring out the names of the celebrities competing. That is especially true if we can crack the code as to who is hiding inside a costume before the four judges.
Season 9 of “The Masked Singer” is proving to be the most competitive yet. The producers packed the line-up with 22 stars. The lone woman who contended in Week 4 was disguised as Squirrel and she wowed the crowd with her cover of the Pink tune “Try.”
We’ve been reviewing the clues and that performance on March 8 and have all your “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the answer to the question, “Who is Squirrel”?

Rye Lane has a sustained energy that makes it a joyous experience to watch. A madcap romantic comedy that’s as in love with its characters as they are with each other, it mostly takes place during one aimless day, as a ridiculously likable couple get to know each other in their favorite part of London.
Director Raine Allen Miller has made the kind of unapologetically fun romance that we don’t get enough of. A bit of Before Sunset by way of Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle, it tells the story of Dom and Yas, played by David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah with the sort of electric chemistry that every romantic comedy director dreams of sparking.
The movie takes place in and around south London, including, of course, on Rye Lane, with its eclectic mix of unique shops and restaurants. (The street doesn’t have any particular narrative significance beyond the characters.

Having earned over 200 million at the global box office, writer/director Parker Finn’s horror film Smile has now been given a digital release and is also available to watch on the Paramount+ streaming service in the US and Canada. With a new stage of release comes a new piece of promotion, as Paramount has unveiled a featurette that looks into the casting of Sosie Bacon (Charlie Says) as the film’s heroine. That featurette, which has a running time just under 2 minutes, can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Smile is based on Finn’s short film Laura Hasn’t Slept, which won the Special Jury Recognition Prize in SXSW’s Midnight Short category. Caitlin Stasey (Neighbours) played the title character in that short, and it seems like she might be reprising the role in Smile (briefly, judging by the marketing), making this a follow-up of sorts.

The antics of Barney Stinson may not have aged particularly well here in 2022, but the "How I Met Your Mother" character somehow remains just as beloved today as he was when the show was on the air. There is one reason for that and his name is Neil Patrick Harris. This is not to say series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and their team didn't do an amazing job writing these characters, because they definitely did. However, the show's resident lothario wouldn't have been nearly as lovable if Harris hadn't imbued him with so much heart. Barney does one despicable thing after another, and yet the audience continues to root for him. Harris' performance brought so much depth to a character that could've very easily been little more than a caricature.

If you've seen the 2004 film "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle," you likely have a deep and abiding love for not only Neil Patrick Harris himself, but the fictional version that he plays in the film. If you haven't been gifted with the vision of him riding a unicorn, you should make an appointment to watch. "Harold & Kumar" stars John Cho and Kal Penn as the title characters, who head out on an adventure-filled trip to reach a White Castle so they can assuage their cravings. There is a lot of marijuana involved and other drugs, an attempted foursome, grand...

“The Santa Clauses,” the Disney+ limited series continuing “The Santa Clause” franchise, is bringing back David Krumholtz in the role of Bernard the Elf, Variety has confirmed.
Krumholtz is reuniting with fellow “The Santa Clause” actors Tim Allen and Elizabeth Mitchell in the new series. Allen and Mitchell are set to reprise their roles of Scott Calvin/Santa Claus and Carol Calvin/Mrs. Claus, respectively. In both the 1994 film “The Santa Clause” and its 2002 sequel “The Santa Clause 2,” Bernard serves as the head elf of Santa’s workshop. A stickler for getting things done on time, Bernard can tend to be a grumpier, less cheerful elf, but he does it all to keep the other elves on task and productive.
In addition to his role in the “Santa Clause” films, Krumholtz is known for appearing in the “Harold & Kumar” franchise and in films like “10 Things I Hate About You...

Almost two decades since a trip to White Castle and John Cho is still hungry for more roles that break down Aapi stereotypes.
The “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” star reflected on the legacy of the 2004 buddy comedy co-starring Kal Penn.
“Its posture towards race is to laugh at it,” Cho explained to The Guardian. “Instead of elevating it, it took the stereotypes and turned the sock inside out. Looking back, I think we were ahead of our time a little bit.”
The iconic comedy followed two college friends, Harold (Cho) and Kumar (Penn), who set out to escape the pressures of corporate life and grad school applications by smoking weed and fulfilling a craving for White Castle burgers. A trek across New Jersey to find the nearest fast food chain location leads to unexpected adventures with standout guest stars ranging from Christopher Meloni to Neil Patrick Harris.

‘Harold & Kumar’ and ‘Grudge’ star John Cho thinks movies that don’t focus on his Asian heritage feel more “authentic.” The ‘Searching’ actor was born in Seoul, South Korea, but in recent years, his on-screen roles have had relatively little to do with his Asian background, reports aceshowbiz.com. Asked about the roles he chooses, the […]...

It is often difficult for movie audiences to imagine certain actors outside of certain roles they’ve played, especially if that role was a comedy role or a franchise role. John Cho, however, is one of the actors who, while in both comedies (‘Harold and Kumar‘) and franchises (‘Star Trek‘), can do just about anything, and audiences don’t say, “Why is he in this, he should stick to that?

2004's "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" is a thinly plotted and often crass stoner comedy about the hijinks that ensue when two friends smoke pot, get the munchies, and try to buy some hamburgers. It was also radical in the way it subverted ethnic stereotypes while commenting on racism in the United States and the experiences of second-generation immigrants in the context of the early 2000s. Even to this day, it's the rare mainstream comedy to feature two Asian American actors — John Cho and Kal Penn, perfectly cast as the put-upon Harold Lee and his underachieving pal Kumar Patel — as...
