Timothée Chalamet recreates one of Bob Dylan’s most famous songs and visuals with a version of “Subterranean Homesick Blues” for the upcoming biopic, A Complete Unknown.
Chalamet’s new recording of the 1965 classic is the fullest offering yet of the actor’s take on Dylan’s singular singing voice. The previously released trailer for a Complete Unknown just included snippets of his renditions of songs like “Girl from the North Country” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”
The visual, meanwhile, appears to incorporate some scenes from the upcoming biopic, plus some behind-the-scenes footage.

In 2002, it was finally all coming together for Joaquin Phoenix. He was at long last being considered a leading man after two decades of ensemble parts, and was a year removed from earning a Best Supporting Actor nomination for "Gladiator." The U.S. Army satire "Buffalo Soldiers" could have been the film to fully transform him into a full-blown, top-of-the-poster star, but it wound up getting buried for the offense of poking fun at the military in the immediate wake of 9/11 (it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival the very week of the attacks). So, it couldn't help but feel like he was more actor than M. Night Shyamalan's "Signs" needed for the role of Mel Gibson's brother.

How do you even begin to prepare to play Bob Dylan? The folk musician who changed the entire scene is at the heart of James Mangold’s new film, A Complete Unknown – and for star Timothée Chalamet, the challenge was to find a way to make the real Dylan… well, known. First came a three-and-a-half year period of learning to play guitar, getting to grips with Dylan’s songs and unique vocal style. And from there, it was all about letting go and reaching for something real beyond just a surface impression.
“Bob has a very specific, soulful voice, but what most defines it is his negotiation with his own words and the way he tells the story,” Mangold tells Empire, digging into his and Chalamet’s approach to the icon. “That essence is what Timmy and I were after more than a specific mannerism or tic, per se.” The...

Filmmakers and distributors of awards-hopefuls have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification that it finds egregiously inaccurate.
Some of this year’s cases are inarguable — for instance, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, in which characters spontaneously burst into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s The Brutalist, in which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. There are, however, also plenty of close-calls, about which many have made assumptions, but, in most cases, not confirmed.
The Hollywood Reporter has been working the phones and can now report which way almost every contender is breaking. This intel is, of course, subject to change prior to Nov. 4, and to being overturned by the Globes thereafter — but it is current as of this writing.

Arianne Phillips, the costume designer for “Joker: Folie à Deux,” has provided insights into her work bringing Lady Gaga’s character to life. In the upcoming musical, Gaga plays Harley Quinn, starting as an obsessed fan of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) before transforming into the iconic character. Phillips faced the challenge of expanding the visual world from the first “Joker” film while honoring Mark Bridges’ Oscar-nominated costume design.
Phillips collaborated closely with Gaga to develop the character’s look throughout the story. In early scenes, Lady Gaga’s character is shown as an “underdeveloped, infantilized fan girl” through outfits like scrubs with a floral top. Phillips said this showed how the character was “obsessed with the Joker like a teenage girl — she’s a fan girl in a way that stunts her emotional growth.”

Lives of historical figures often get cinematic treatment to tell sweeping tales of real life events, and Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice captures former president Donald Trump in a key moment before the 2024 presidential election. Starring Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Trump’s first wife Ivanka, the film marks the latest in a catalog of films that explore the lives of political people. From United States Presidents to their wives and First Ladies, to Supreme Court Justices to scientists and brilliant minds, nobody is off limits, especially if the stories are triumphant. Others have more tragic endings.

A new trailer just dropped for A Complete Unknown, director James Mangold’s highly anticipated biopic about the legendary Bob Dylan starring Timothée Chalamet. The story ends around 1965, meaning that we won’t get a scene in which Chalamet bangs a tiny Ikea wrench against a microphone while wearing old age makeup.
A Complete Unknown looks like a boilerplate Hollywood music biopic, full of eye-rollingly obvious moments. And it’s nearly impossible to accept these types of formulaic music biopics, not just because Hollywood has practically run the genre into the ground at this point, but because they were so perfectly parodied in 2007’s Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
Mangold has admitted to enjoying Walk Hard, which was primarily a send-up of his previous music biopic effort, Walk the Line. But for some reason, he seems to be leaning into those Dewey Cox-esque elements again, rather than avoiding them.

Fate has not been kind to Joaquin Phoenix in the aftermath of Joker: Folie à Deux hitting the theatres. Dismal critics review, a popularity rating that couldn’t be worse, and Box Office returns that would be a lackluster reflection of the 2019 film.
Amidst all this rubble, he might be offered a sigh of relief from an unexpected corner. Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, has generated a lot of hype amongst fans, turning back the clock to the 1960s. But for Phoenix, it might turn the clock to another happy time.

Tired out by the deluge of atypical music movies? Last week we got the trailer for Robbie Williams chimp biopic Better Man, while cinemagoers will soon be greeted with Pharrell’s Lego-styled take on his own life in documentary Piece By Piece – but playing it more straight is A Complete Unknown, the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic from James Mangold, with Timothée Chalamet donning the acoustic guitar as the ‘60s folk icon. Take a look at the latest trailer here:
This latest look at the film centres more on the specific angle of the story Mangold is telling – not just Dylan’s rise through the folk scene, but exploring the fallout and cultural impact of the moment he decided to ‘go electric’, changing up his sound to considerable outcry. Plus, we hear more of Chalamet singing those iconic Dylan tunes, see images that echo legendary bits of iconography (like The...

In the A Complete Unknown trailer, Timotheé Chalamet’s Bob Dylan faces the pressure to define himself as his music career reaches stratospheric heights. “Two hundred people in that room and each one wants me to be somebody else,” Chalamet says in the trailer.
By the end of the trailer, released Tuesday, Chalamet goes electric, performing “Like a Rolling Stone” to a raucous crowd at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

James Mangold is no stranger to the musical biopic, having brought Johnny Cash’s story to the big screen with Walk the Line, which got Joaquin Phoenix an Academy Award nomination for that film. Now, Mangold takes on another musical icon with the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. Searchlight Pictures has now released a comprehensive look with the new trailer, as it shows more of Timothée Chalamet‘s performance and the events of Dylan’s life that will be explored.
A Complete Unknown, which stars Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro. The film also co-stars Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz and Scoot McNairy, with the studio also giving it a December 25th wide release. Given how well Chalamet’s Wonka did during the holiday season last year, the studio is likely hoping that lightning will strike twice. The date also gives is peak visibility during award season.

Timothee Chalamet’s Bob Dylan impression came into the light on Tuesday with the release of the new trailer for “A Complete Unknown,” a biopic that charts the musician’s rise and culminates in his polarizing electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.
Wearing a small prosthetic nose, Chalamet takes on all of Dylan’s affectations in this new look at the film, which comes from “Walk the Line” filmmaker James Mangold. Indeed, “A Complete Unknown” has shades of Mangold’s Johnny Cash film as it also looks to chronicle the relationship between Dylan and Joan Baez, played by Monica Barbaro.
But don’t fret, unlike “Walk the Line” wherein Joaquin Phoenix sang as Cash, it looks like Chalamet is merely lip-syncing to Dylan most of the time in the Searchlight Pictures release. Either that or his performance is that impressive – or just as likely these days,...

James Mangold directs Chalamet in the long-gestating “A Complete Unknown,” which captures folk singer Dylan’s rise from his late teen guitar-playing years to performing at the iconic Newport Folk Festival in 1965. “Walk the Line” helmer Mangold adapted the screenplay from Elijah Wald’s book “Dylan Goes Electric!,” which was released in 2015.

Director Todd Phillips returns with the highly anticipated sequel to his controversial 2019 Dceu adventure, Joker. The new film, Joker: Folie à Deux, brings back Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, the mentally disturbed criminal who becomes the Joker. Joining Phoenix is the iconic Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) as Harley Quinn, while Zazie Beetz reprises her role, albeit all too briefly, from the first movie. Irish actor Brendan Gleeson and Catherine Keener add gravitas to the cast.
Joker: Folie à Deux delves deeper into Arthur’s descent into madness, set against Gotham City’s criminal underworld. With a musical twist, Phoenix and Gaga share several striking performances together.
The story follows Arthur navigating life in Arkham Asylum five years after the first film’s events. His Joker persona becomes central to a legal battle where his lawyer (Keener) argues for his mental instability, while district attorney Harvey Dent seeks the death penalty.

After coming up short on his first two Best Actor Oscar bids for “Walk the Line” and “The Master,” Joaquin Phoenix took the gold in 2020 for “Joker.” The film reaped a whopping 11 Oscar nominations and cracked the billion dollar mark at the box office. The sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which hits theaters October 4, makes Phoenix the 11th Best Actor victor to reprise his winning role in a feature film.
Only one of the first 10 fellows to pull off this double feature earned another Oscar nomination: Bing Crosby (he won for “Going My Way” in 1945 and was nominated for “The Bells of St. Mary’s” in 1946).
Those who preceded Crosby in reprising their winning roles without academy recognition are Warner Baxter, who went on to appear in both “The Cisco Kid” (1931) and “Return of the Cisco Kid” (1939), and Spencer Tracy, who starred in “Men of Boys Town” (1941).

Over the years, filmmakers – whether they are auteurs or not – tend to stay true to the written source materials as much as possible whenever they direct biographical films. Sometimes they even choose to take creative endeavors of adding a little bit of narrative fiction to keep the historical figure interesting. Either way, it keeps the viewer strongly interested in the biopic and the portrayal of someone that made a huge impact on history. The greatest thing about biopics is that it ranges from different genres – from crime, sports, war, music, and other unusual subgenres such as action and dramedy. However, there are two huge commonalities that the biopic genre focuses on, drama and history. Without those two genres, there would not be a story that focuses on the hardships and achievements of an individual that made their mark on society.. Filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Oliver Stone, Michael Mann,...

Joaquin Phoenix made his professional acting debut in the 1985 TV movie "Kids Don't Tell," a heady primetime drama about child victims of sexual assault. Phoenix was only 11 at the time. The following year, Phoenix first appeared in theaters in the kid-friendly drama "SpaceCamp," about teenagers and children who are accidentally launched into space. Phoenix continued to land high-profile roles with interesting directors, appearing in Ron Howard's "Parenthood" in 1989 and Gun Van Sant's "To Die For" in 1995. Phoenix soon became an indie darling, and a go-to actor for extreme, quirky, sometimes dark roles. He played a kooky thug in Oliver Stone's "U Turn," and a wise pornographer in Joel Schumacher's "8mm."
By the time he appeared in Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" in 2000, Phoenix was a household name. The role earned him the first of four (to date) Academy Award nominations. He would also be nominated for playing Johnny Cash...

So, after you saw the first Joker movie five years ago, we’re sure the thought that immediately came to mind was, “The sequel needs to be a musical!” Right? Well, regardless of whether that was on your bingo card, that’s what director and co-writer Todd Phillips had in mind. Considering that his star, Joaquin Phoenix, had singing experience in Walk the Line (and won a Grammy Award for the film’s soundtrack), Phillips felt confident that a musical approach would work, and he then hired Lady Gaga to co-star as Harley Quinn. When Gaga spoke about the film at the Venice Film Festival, she talked about how the film is definitely music-driven,...

Todd Phillips’ Joker has always thrived in chaos, and Folie à Deux brings that chaos to colorful, cacophonous new heights. From the gleefully demented opening number—which sees the Clown Prince of Crime cavorting through a bygone Hollywood depicted with a lust for violence unlike anything Disney ever dreamed up—it’s clear Phillips has no interest in recreating the realist grit of his breakthrough. Rather, he graffiti-tags Scorsese’s grim Gotham with pop psychedelia, daring viewers to extract meaning from the mayhem.
What meaning there is comes, as ever, through the cracked lens of Arthur Fleck. Incarcerated at Arkham Asylum since the so-called “Gotham Uprising,” Fleck has retreated into muted catatonia—until encountering Harleen Quinzel, an “enthusiast” who sees in him not a man but an icon. Their Folie à Deux blossoms into deranged duets that stage unnerving exposure therapy through Kander and Ebb’s barbed standards.

Pharrell’s story is brought to life in Focus Features’ “Piece by Piece,” directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville, known for his documentary “20 Feet from Stardom.” The film uses Lego bricks to depict Pharrell’s early life, focusing on his roots in Virginia Beach and his rise to fame as one half of the hip-hop and R&b production duo The Neptunes.
Pharrell was on the ground in Colorado for the Patron’s Brunch on Friday morning, mingling with high-profile guests, including some AMPAS voters. “I’m so excited to be at a festival that doesn’t show many animated movies, but they chose mine,” he told Variety.

After being delayed several times, Sony's latest "Spider-Man" spin-off film "Kraven the Hunter" is hitting theaters later this year. The studio only barely released a brand-new red-band trailer for the Marvel Comics adaptation, which highlights the R-rated action to come. It very much seems like a violent, no-holds-barred take on the character, who is being played by "Bullet Train" and "The Fall Guy" star Aaron Taylor-Johnson. But while the films seemingly couldn't be more different, broadly speaking, "Kraven" does share at least one thing in common with 2017's "Logan" beyond the R rating.
The latest trailer for "Kraven" makes use of Johnny Cash's "The Man Comes Around." It's become pretty common for big movies to take once-popular songs and give them a bit of a remix to add a certain vibe to their trailers. Jordan Peele's "Us" famously used a version of Luniz's "I Got 5 On it,...

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown stars Timothée Chalamet, and will be arriving on Christmas Day in the US.
When it was revealed last month (alongside a trailer for the upcoming film) that James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown would be arriving in cinemas in 2024, a few eyebrows went up. The project began filming back in March (according to IMDb) and wrapped near the end of June.
Still, Mangold can be a quick worker when it comes to the post-production stage of filmmaking, depending on the film of course. Whilst Le Mans ’66 took a year to make it through the editing room, his other musical biopic – 2005’s Walk The Line – released in cinemas six months after entering the post-production phase and it looks like the filmmaker will be doing the same again here.

There has been a more abstract attempt at telling Dylan’s story with Todd Haynes’ 2007 film I’m Not There, which featured an all-star cast and multiple actors playing Bob Dylan in a different phase of his life with a unique interpretation, including Cate Blanchett sporting his iconic look. Searchlight Pictures has dropped the trailer for A Complete Unknown, which stars Timothée Chalamet, Edward Norton, Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro. The film also co-stars Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz and Scoot McNairy, with the studio also giving it a December 25th wide release. Given how well Chalamet’s Wonka did...

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown will hit theaters on December 25.
The movie, which stars Timothée Chalamet as Dylan, follows the singer’s rise from Minnesota to West Village balladeer to revolutionary folk singer. As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement and, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide. Mangold co-wrote the script with Jay Cocks.
Will this movie hit the fall film festival troika? We’re hearing no — it’s not ready yet. Good things come to those who wait.
Mangold knows how to make a mass-appealing biopic about a musical legend; his 2005 feature Walk the Line, about Johnny Cash and June Carter, grossed close to $120 million stateside, more that $186M worldwide, and notched a Best Actress Oscar win for Reese Witherspoon after five Oscar noms including Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

“A Complete Unknown,” the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothée Chalamet as the famed musician, will land in theaters on Christmas Day. It’s scheduled to hit the big screen on Dec. 25.
On its current release date, “A Compete Unknown” will premiere on the same day as Robert Eggers’ remake of “Nosferatu” and a week after Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King.”
“Walk the Line” filmmaker James Mangold directed “A Complete Unknown,” which chronicles the early life and times of Dylan. Set in New York in the early 1960s, the film begins as the enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in Greenwich Village and ignites an “upheaval in the folk community” when, in 1965, he straps on an electric guitar. The first trailer, which debuted in July, gives a glimpse at Chalamet (who does his own singing) performing a rousing rendition of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” and stopping by Dylan...

The esteemed filmmaker behind the Johnny Cash bio-musical “Walk the Line” and superhero drama “Logan,” James Mangold has done it all. He’s torn up the race track with “Ford v Ferrari,” been the only director other than Steven Spielberg to take the helm of an “Indiana Jones” film with last year’s “Dial of Destiny,” and later this year, he’ll debut his Bob Dylan drama starring Timotheé Chalamet, “A Complete Unknown.” Before he began his career as a filmmaker, he learned from legends like Alexander Mackendrick (“The Sweet Smell of Success”) and Milos Forman (“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”).
In a recent response post on X, Mangold explained his creative process and how it was passed down from these “masters,” as well as gathered from watching the work of others.
“I have learned this way of working from watching masters I admire. Some masters have been my teachers in person.

The latest Marvel movie event, Deadpool & Wolverine, is making bank at the box office despite the R-Rating. The movie is seen by many as a bookend to the nearly 25 years of X-Men films that began at 20th Century Fox back in July of 2000. The X-Men series is considered the predecessor to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this last installment is considered one of the best Marvel movies in years.
One of the biggest parts of Deadpool & Wolverine has to do with the multiverse as well as the history of many past Marvel movies. We see several character returns that audiences loved. But there’s one person who doesn’t seem all that happy, and that person is James Mangold.
James Mangold is perhaps best known for helming the 2017 X-Men drama Logan, a film that was seen as the perfect farewell to Hugh Jackman’s legacy as the uncanny hero.

Joaquin Phoenix may not be a natural singer — he wasn’t born that way — but Lady Gaga helped him hit the right notes in “Joker: Folie á Deux.” Also, Phoenix’s turn playing (and singing) Johnny Cash in “Walk the Line” (2005) was at least a good warm up.
“Joker 2,” which features musical sequences, stars Phoenix as Arthur Fleck Aka the Joker, who is now being treated by psychiatrist Harley Quinn at Arkham Asylum.
Phoenix told Empire magazine that Gaga played more than just Quinn for “Folie á Deux” — she also played his vocal coach.
“I do seem to remember her spitting up coffee the first time I sang, so that felt good, that was exciting, and made me feel confident,” Phoenix joked. “Gaga was always very encouraging of just, ‘Go with what you feel, it’s fine.'”

We’re currently in the midst of the Multiverse Saga in the MCU, and many fans are already weary of it. To a large portion of the audience, the Multiverse concept equates to bland storytelling, as it removes all stakes and risks. Complex character development can be easily dismissed as “a variant.”
Any character’s death can be undone, and every plot hole can be explained away as “a different timeline.”
‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ features a scene that pokes fun at the Multiverse concept, even though the film itself attempts to capitalize on it. I’ll avoid spoilers, so I won’t go into details.
Before the release of ‘Deadpool and Wolverine,’ it was known that Feige was firmly against Jackman returning as Wolverine, given the way his character’s arc concluded in ‘Logan.’ However, the Multiverse concept conveniently allowed for his return—as a variant.

James Mangold hates multi-verse movies because he thinks they're "the enemy of storytelling".The 60-year-old director has helmed Marvel blockbusters like 'The Wolverine' and 'Logan' but isn't looking to bring this cross-over idea over to his upcoming Bob Dylan biopic 'A Complete Unknown', which stars Timothee Chalamet as the music legend.Asked if Chalamet's Dylan could cross paths with Joaquin Phoenix's Johnny Cash from his 2006 flick 'Walk the Line', Mangold told Rolling Stone magazine: "I don’t do multiverses. But beyond that, Johnny Cash was like, 30. I love Joaquin, but he’s not 30, or whatever Johnny was at this moment. They’re both young people in that moment in life. The answer, my friend, is in the trailer for A Complete Unknown – the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic from James Mangold, starring none other than Timothée Chalamet as the legendary folk artist.
