Every once in a while, the stars will align to make for some truly fascinating television, not because of anything going on in the script but because of the context of the actors involved. The short-lived 2000 TV series "Freaks and Geeks," for instance, is fascinating not just because it's good TV but because so many of the actors in it were just a few years away from becoming massive stars.
Likewise, there's a 2007 episode of "Hannah Montana" that's interesting not because of the actual plot, which is pretty boilerplate relationship drama stuff, but because Larry David and Austin Butler are for some reason involved. Yes, that Larry David, the crotchety old man most famous for playing a childless, profanity-spewing jerk on "Curb Your Enthusiasm." And yes, that Austin Butler, the guy who recently played a hairless psychopath in "Dune: Part Two."
Larry David was already pretty well-known by this point,...

"Seinfeld" was twice the most popular show on television (per the Nielsen ratings) despite its penchant for courting controversy. The series spared no racial or ethnic group, and hopped all over third-wire issues with relative impunity. The one time the show pole vaulted over the line in a script titled "The Bet," which centered on Elaine buying a gun, the cast revolted before the episode could go before cameras.
Once "Seinfeld" settled into its misanthropic groove (by the end of season 2), it was randomly, unapologetically offensive (to an unfortunate degree with "The Puerto Rican Day) -- which was either spot-on or bizarrely off for a show about nothing. If the series steadfastly refused to take life seriously, why should anyone watching the show get their hackles up? Apparently, though, everyone has their breaking point, and Jason Alexander, who played the most consistently objectionable character on "Seinfeld," found his in an...

The year was 1996, and NBC's "Seinfeld" was firing on all cylinders. The "show about nothing" had won an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, Kramer actor Michael Richards had won two Supporting Actor in a Comedy Emmys, Julia Louis-Dreyfus was fresh off her win for Supporting Actress, and co-creator Larry David had already won his Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Writing for a Comedy Series for season 4's "The Contest," where he was willing to put his job on the line to make sure the episode got made.
But it was at this point, after the seventh season had aired, when Larry David walked away from his creation. Well, that's not entirely true -- he stuck around as an actor to continue to do the occasional cameo as Yankees head honcho George Steinbrenner -- but it is true that David stopped writing and showrunning "Seinfeld" right around the time it reached its creative peak.

The early 1980s were a tough time for Saturday Night Live. After Lorne Michaels and the remaining members of the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players left at the end of Season Five, an all-new cast starred in a truncated Season Six before they were all fired — save for two breakout stars: Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo.
With the departing cast members went new showrunner Jean Doumanian, who was replaced by Dick Ebersol for Seasons Seven through 10 (Michaels returned in Season 11). Ebersol was a controversial figure at SNL, as the show struggled to regain its cultural relevance during his reign and suffered from frequent cast turnover.
Smack-dab in the middle of Ebersol’s run came Brad Hall, who was a cast member for all of Seasons Eight and Nine. While he was in some sketches, he mostly helmed the Weekend Update desk for a season and a half before...

Halloween is upon us, so stay safe out there — and stay away from the taco meat.
Tonight, America’s costumed children will venture out in search of treats, trickster teenagers will commit playful acts of vandalism and us older, sensible folk will hole up in our homes, eat candy and re-watch festive, barely frightening and deliciously nostalgic TV shows and movies from our own childhoods.
While horror films are the traditional fare for a night such as tonight, the last half-century of American culture embracing the theme of the season has led to every syndicated TV show at least attempting a Halloween episode, and, for those of us who prefer laughs to gasps, we’d rather settle in with a sitcom than a slasher while we eat cupcakes decorated like skulls and drink punch that we’ll pretend is blood.
But although most every American sitcom has made at least one Halloween episode,...

Crafting a perfect ending that does justice to all of its characters is often a tough nut to crack in the realm of television, as even iconic shows, including How I Met Your Mother, failed to satisfy its fanbase with its conclusion. Jerry Seinfeld’s Seinfeld is no exception, whose polarizing finale still remains a topic of discourse among fans of the show.

As for the lead’s perspective on the finale, Seinfeld has one major regret, which could’ve facilitated the ending’s reception among fans.

Although I'm on record saying that the "Seinfeld" series finale was good, and Larry David never should've apologized for it, it's undeniable that a lot of people disagree, especially in the episode's immediate aftermath. "Sitcom's finale found guilty of mediocrity" wrote one headline at The Des Moines Register. "It delivered many fewer yucks than yadas," said Howard Rosenberg at the LA Times. "Seinfeld should have quit while it was ahead. Better yet, it should've quit last week," said the Fr. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel.
Although most of the cast and crew stuck up for the ending over the years, Jerry Seinfeld has voiced some regrets. He still mostly stands by it, he just wishes he could've changed one part. "I think the only mistake, if there was one, was leaving them in jail," he said in a May 2024 interview, "We didn't really have to do that."

For today’s Gen-z kids, The Big Bang Theory and Friends might be some of the shows that they feel are iconic. But long back in the 80s, aired a show that changed the definition of sitcoms and grew a massive fan base across the US.
Yes, we are talking about NBC’s Cheers, which ran successfully from 1982 until its series finale in 1993. Critically acclaimed and loved by many during its original run, the series is one of the best sitcoms.
Cheers is hilarious, intelligent, fast-paced, heartfelt, peopled by unforgettable characters, and consistently good. The story revolves around a Boston bar, owned by Sam Malone (Ted Danson), a former relief pitcher, and has several other main characters, who either work in the bar or visit it regularly.
Decades later after its final run, let’s take a look at where some of the Cheers‘ major cast members are now!

Ted Danson apologized on Wednesday to Kelsey Grammer for a 30-year-old rift that occurred when they were both on “Cheers.”
The two discussed their relative falling out on the latest episode of Danson’s SiriusXM’s podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.”
Danson recalled a time when he “got angry” with his costar, who played Dr. Frasier Crane on the NBC sitcom and on the spinoff “Frasier.”
Watch the conversation in the video above.
“This isn’t self-deprecating, but I wish — I feel like I got stuck a little bit with you during the Cheers years. I have a memory of getting angry at you once,” Danson told Grammer.
“Yeah, you came and told me that one day,” Grammer replied, although neither one of them elaborated what the argument was about.
“It’s stuck in both of our memories,” Danson continued. “But I feel like, f–k, I don’t know.

Adam Ray is bringing his Dr. Phil parody to Netflix with a wild new special in which the comedian — dressed as the mustachioed talk show host — will come face to face with Dr. Phil himself.
Debuting on Netflix on Nov. 19, the untitled “Adam Ray’s Dr. Phil Comedy Special” will also see Ray-as-Phil interview special guests including Patton Oswalt, Jay Pharoah and “Gollum,” and get to know the audience through silly questions and games.
Ray’s “Dr. Phil Live!” had become one of the hottest tickets at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles before the comedian took it on the road across America. The show will soon expand beyond the United States.
The Netflix special marks the first time the real Dr. Phil has sat down in person with Ray.
The comedian will next take “Dr. Phil Live!” to the New York Comedy Festival on Nov. 15, where he will be headlining at the Beacon Theatre.

On Elsbeth Season 2 Episode 2, “Fly Me to the Moon” takes on a whole new meaning. Now that rich people have conquered Earth, their next venture is space.
From what we can gather from the promo for the next episode, there’s murder afoot at a space training station, but not for astronauts. No, it’s for “private citizens.” Because that’s what space needs.
Leave it to Elsbeth to continue its trend of truly bizarre murder situations. The series knows its strength lies in how well it incorporates campy elements.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
As always, the show leads with its episodic killer with all the grace and subtlety of a sledgehammer. That is also on my murder bingo card for possible Elsbeth Season 2 weapons.

There's a lot of reasons "Lost" was so successful, but a big one was Hugo "Hurley" Reyes (Jorge Garcia). He's one of the few survivors on the show who gets along with pretty much everyone; he doesn't have a mean bone in his body, except of course when Sawyer tries to make fun of his mental health. Hurley's a sweet and loyal friend, and he's funny in a way that rarely seems to boil down to an easy fat joke, which 2000s-era TV loved to indulge in.
Of course, Garcia doesn't always play a nice guy. Before "Lost" aired, he starred in a season 4 episode of "Curb Your Enthusiasm," playing a straight-man drug dealer for a nervous, awkward Larry David to bounce off of. Garcia's character here is still funny, but more because of how jaded and tired he is. He's only in the episode for one scene, but he makes a strong impression,...

Is Curb Your Enthusiasm the first sitcom about an asshole? Jeff Schaffer says no.
In the academic sense, Curb Your Enthusiasm is about as textbook a comedy of manners as we’ve ever seen on television. For 12 seasons and 24 years, Larry David bristled against social norms and challenged conventions of polite society to the delight of cantankerous Curb fans everywhere, highlighting the absurdity of modern society as he sees it. However, according to entertainment journalist Joel Stein in his new essay for The Wrap titled “Bad Manners,” David and Curb Your Enthusiasm also carved out a new subgenre within the umbrella of the comedy of manners: the comedy of the asshole.
According to Stein, Curb Your Enthusiasm entered the zeitgeist during a unique period of TV history when the antihero main character was quickly becoming the most popular character archetype, just as crime dramas such as The Sopranos and The Wire...

Short answer: Unfortunately, no. Max is not currently offering a free trial of its service for all new users. Sign Up $9.99+ / month max.com
In today’s streaming world where there are a ton of options free trials are an excellent way to test the waters of a service before deciding whether or not you want to commit to paying for a service. Throughout its history, the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streaming service now known as Max has had an inconsistent history of free trials, and unfortunately, as of now, the service is not offering a free trial either directly or through any third-party partners.
However, there are still ways to save on the service. Recently, Max has joined with Disney+ and Hulu to create a first-of-its-kind bundle. You can sign up for the ad-supported version of the services for just $17 per month or go ad-free for $30.

There are only a small handful of shows in the history of television that can claim to be as successful as "Seinfeld." Other shows may have lasted longer in terms of sheer volume of episodes. But as far as staying power and cultural impact goes? What Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David created is damn near untouchable. The show ran for nine seasons from 1989 to 1998. It actually could have gone at least one more season but that wasn't in the cards, at least not for the series' lead. In fact, NBC offered Seinfeld a fortune to stay for at least one more year -- a fortune he walked away from.
In a 2012 interview with Fox News, Warren Littlefield, the former President of Entertainment at NBC, explained that he tried to make "Seinfeld" season 10 happen. Keep in mind, by this point, David had already left to pursue other ventures, including HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Amazon‘s plan to grow its live shopping empire now includes a new game show. The retail giant has announced Buy It Now, which will apply the signature format of Shark Tank to the world of ecommerce.
Like Shark Tank, Amazon’s Buy It Now will feature a rotating cast of judges. Mainstream celebs, including actor Gwyneth Paltrow and designer Christian Siriano, will join Amazon execs to evaluate pitches from independent entrepreneurs. A studio audience will also be on hand to weigh the presented products. Actor and comedian J.B. Smoove (of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame) will serve as the emcee.
The winner of each episode of Buy It Now will receive $20,000, but the game show has plenty more to offer its contestants beyond a simple cash prize. Finalists will be featured on a Buy It Now page on the Amazon website, where their products will benefit from added visibility.
