The films in contention for the 2024 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds posit “Barbie” (10/3) as the frontrunner, followed in order by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
Since she was previously feted for “Anna Karenina” (2013) and “Little Women” (2020), Jacqueline Durran’s ninth career nomination for “Barbie” could make her the dozenth costumer with three or more wins. As is the case this time, her 2020 bid resulted from a collaboration with director Greta Gerwig, while her 2013 one was her third of five for a Joe Wright film, after “Pride & Prejudice” (2006) and “Atonement” (2008) and before “Darkest Hour” (2018) and “Cyrano” (2022). Her remaining two bids came for “Mr. Turner” (2015) and “Beauty and the Beast” (2018).
Durran is now involved in a rematch with Jacqueline West (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), who, as a nominee for “Dune,” lost...

If you're making a list of the greatest film acting debuts of all time, Kate Winslet's unnervingly ecstatic portrayal of Juliet Hulme in Peter Jackson's "Heavenly Creatures" better be at or near the top of the list -- and you should absolutely tether it to co-star Melanie Lynskey's startling debut as Pauline Parker in the same fantastic movie. You can't set the bar any higher than this, and all the two actors have done over the last 30 years is meet or surpass our expectations.
While Lynskey ultimately found her groove as a versatile and rousingly effective character actor, Winslet's career skyrocketed to superstardom in 1997 when she landed the role of Rose in James Cameron's disaster epic "Titanic." Her red-hot romance with Leonardo Di Caprio's dashing Jack granted her cinematic immortality, at which point she was faced with the daunting challenge of living up to mainstream moviegoers' expectations.

Best Costume Design is always a popular category at the Oscars since, unlike some other below-the-line categories, it’s more apparent to moviegoers at large which costumes are worthy of note and thus worthy of winning. This year’s category includes three previous Oscar winners and three first-time nominees, and though period pieces tend to do very well in this category, it’s two of the more unique films that mix contemporary, period and genre elements likely to get the most attention.
It might not be a coincidence that all five of this year’s nominations line-up with this year’s Best Production Design nominees. The two categories go hand-in-hand when it comes to crafting glorious-looking films.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” has been named best picture by the National Board of Review, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Co-distributed by Apple Original Films and Paramount Pictures, the crime epic also nabbed prizes for director Martin Scorsese and actress Lily Gladstone. Scorsese’s win for directing is notable, as he is now tied with legendary filmmaker David Lean with four wins, the most of any director in NBR history. Interestingly, NBR has the least translation to an Oscar winner of all the major categories, the last being Scorsese for “The Departed” (2006).
Over the last 30 years, the winner of NBR’s best film has typically gone on to receive an Oscar nomination for best picture, except for once every decade — 2014’s “A Most Violent Year,” 2000’s “Quills” and 1998’s “Gods and Monsters.” In the 1980s, there were technically two misses with 1987’s “Empire of the Sun” and 1983’s “Betrayal,...

Geoffrey Rush is one of the rare few who have achieved the triple crown of acting, meaning he has received an Emmy, Oscar and Tony Award (all three major acting awards) for his work (he refers to it as the Toe while waiting on his Egot).
Rush was an acclaimed actor in his native Australia for nearly two decades before the film “Shine” made him a known commodity in the rest of the world. He was 45 years old when suddenly his whole career changed and he was being considered for major roles in various mediums. That film about a pianist dealing with scars from his childhood won Rush the Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award for Best Actor. Those awards and acclaim launched him into a highly successful international career. He has since earned even more Oscar nominations, with two as Best Supporting Actor for “Shakespeare in Love” and...

Joaquin Phoenix is receiving strong reviews for his performance in Ari Aster’s “Beau is Afraid,” about a mild-mannered, paranoid man who confronts his darkest fears as he embarks on an epic quest. Tomris Laffly (The Wrap) writes, “Joaquin Phoenix delivers one of his best performances.” With Phoenix likely to be a contender in the Best Actor category next year, either for “Beau is Afraid” or Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Napoleon,” let’s look back at Phoenix’s four previous Oscar races.
His first and to date only Oscar win came in early 2020 when he took home the gold trophy for Best Actor for his portrayal in “Joker,” directed by Todd Phillips. Phoenix’ victory was a sure thing going into Oscar night after sweeping the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards. The American Theatre Critics Association (Atca) announced that “Good Night, Oscar” by Doug Wright is a finalist for their 2023 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/Atca New Play Award. This prize honors plays which had their professional premiere outside of New York City, with this new work debuting at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago this past spring. With one awards body already giving their stamp of approval, is “Good Night, Oscar” headed for a Tony nomination for Best Play?
This new work will open on Broadway on April 24, just days before the eligibility window closes for the 2023 Tony Awards. The story is set in 1958 on the set of “The Tonight Show” hosted by Jack Parr. The host has booked his most coveted guest: the witty talk show staple Oscar Levant. Jacqueline West is one of Hollywood’s most respected costume designers with four Oscar nominations for Philip Kaufmann’s Quills, David Fincher’s The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part One.
She is also Terrence Malick’s go-to costume designer, after a recommendation from his long-time production designer Jack Fisk, working with him on The New World, The Tree of Life, To the Wonder and Knight of Cups, while other credits include Stephen Norrington’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Ben Affleck’s Argo and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers Of The Flower Moon.
Talking about her career in a masterclass for the Doha Film Institute, West said she fell into cinema by chance after connecting with Kaufmann through a clothes store she set up in Berkeley in the 1990s after majoring in art history, having originally planned to study sciences.

Playwright and screenwriter Christopher Hampton, producer David Parfitt, Dune costume designer Jacqueline West and directors Lynne Ramsay and Michael Winterbottom are to set attend the Qatari Doha Film Institute’s ninth talent incubator event Qumra in March.
The meeting, which returns as an in-person event for the first time in four years from March 10-15 after a Covid-19 pandemic hiatus, focuses on nurturing first and second-time filmmakers.
They attend with their projects that have received funding from the Doha Film Institute (Dfi), a major backer of indie cinema in the Middle East and North Africa.
Hampton, Parfitt, West, Ramsay and Winterbottom are participating in the role of the event’s so-called Qumra Masters.
They will give a masterclass and mentor some of the filmmakers in attendance. The full list of attendees and projects will be announced next week.

Top Gun: Maverick has been named the best film of 2022 by the National Board of Review, a strong indicator that it could be on its way to a Best Picture nomination.
The National Board of Review’s Best Film winner has been consistent with at least earning a nod for the Academy Award for Best Picture. In fact, since 2000, only three winners didn’t receive a nomination–2000’s Quills, 2014’s A Most Violent Year and 2020’s Da 5 Bloods–suggesting that Top Gun: Maverick could make it to the list of nominees.
However, as far as actual Best Picture winners go, only three this century have gone on to take home the statue: 2007’s No Country for Old Men, 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire and 2018’s Green Book. This, of course, wouldn’t bode well for Top Gun: Maverick, although we’re sure there aren’t many pundits who are predicting the sequel to actually win.

“Top Gun: Maverick” has been named best picture by the National Board of Review, the organization announced Thursday.
The big acting winners included Colin Farrell taking the best actor prize for “The Banshees of Inisherin” after coming off the New York Film Critics Circle win earlier this month. Two NBR winners in the last 12 years have translated to Oscar winners — Casey Affleck for “Manchester by the Sea” (2016) and Will Smith for “King Richard” (2021). For winners becoming eventual nominees, only three men were snubbed by the Academy in the end — Oscar Isaac for “A Most Violent Year” (2014), Tom Hanks for “The Post” (2017) and Adam Sandler for “Uncut Gems” (2019).
Michelle Yeoh gets a huge boost after being announced as Madame Morrible in the upcoming “Wicked” movies and featured on Variety’s Actors on Actors. She can now add NBR best actress winner to her golden day for her turn as laundromat owner...

The inclusion of Namor (as played by Tenoch Huerta) in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" can mean very different things depending on where you're coming from. If you're well-versed in the history of Marvel Comics, then you're likely aware the Sub-Mariner has been around since the Golden Age of comic books and has gone through varying iterations since his creation in 1939, ranging from a grumpy do-gooder to a hot-tempered antihero. Alternatively, you may only know Namor for being Marvel's "not-Aquaman," a half-human, half-merfolk weirdo with mutant flying powers who's apparently too busy being irascible to put on anything but a pair of green swimming trunks.
Attempts to adapt Namor for the big screen in live-action date back to the late 1990s, at which time Philip Kaufman — the director of films as wildly divergent as the despondent 1978 "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" remake and the sexually subversive "Quills" — was in charge of the project.

Before joining Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, Geoffrey Rush already had an Oscar and BAFTA under his belt. For the first 20 years of his career, the Australian actor won critical acclaim by portraying a controversial writer in "Quills," a tormented pianist in "Shine," and numerous Shakespeare characters, but he became a star when he took on the role of a cursed, undead pirate.
Although Rush's work was often celebrated by critics in the mid and late '90s, he was far from a household name. However, that changed when he stepped into the role of Captain Hector Barbossa. The mutinous, zombified, pirate became one of the most popular characters in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise and introduced Rush to mainstream audiences across the globe, but the actor never expected the character to return after the first film.

Speaking at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, where he’s being feted with lifetime achievement honors, Australian actor Geoffrey Rush says that the prospect of playing Groucho Marx in Oren Moverman’s “Raised Eyebrows” is “scary,” but that he’s always enjoyed the challenge of complex characters.
It is not a biopic, he says of the film – still in development – adapted from the book “Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho’s House” by Steve Stoliar, which focuses on the last days of the legendary comic. “I describe it as a tragi-comedy about mortality,” he says. “He’s 83 to 86, at the end of his life. There’s dementia but you never know because with Groucho he would never let you know that he’s forgetting things.”
Mastering the way Groucho Marx spoke is a challenge, Rush admits. “His dialogue is so hard to learn because it’s non sequiturs – you know how he would free-form.

Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush is at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival this week to receive its Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the closing ceremony Saturday.
The trip marks the Australian actor’s first high-profile outing in four years, when he began a defamation lawsuit against Sydney newspaper The Daily Telegraph. Rush brought the case following a report he had acted inappropriately towards an actress. Also in 2018, the actor denied a separate allegation of misconduct during a 2010 theater production.
So far, Rush’s stay in Karlovy Vary has gone well, with the veteran thespian getting a rousing welcome Wednesday at a packed screening of 2011 hit The King’s Speech, which is playing alongside Shine (for which he won an Oscar) and Quills as part of the tribute.

As the 56th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) is about to kick off on Friday, there will be plenty to discuss at this year’s event in the picturesque Czech spa town. The prominent Central European festival, which is returning to its usual early July slot after last year’s edition was delayed to August because of the pandemic, will see 33 films from five continents screen across its three sections – the Crystal Globe Competition, the Special Screenings section and its new competition, Proxima, which replaces the former East of the West section.
This year’s selections will be bookended by Friday’s opening night film Superheroes, from Italian director Paolo Genovese, and George Miller’s Cannes title Three Thousand Years Of Longing, which will close the festival on July 9. Three of Rush’s films – “The King’s Speech,” “Quills” and “Shine,” for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor – will be screened at the festival.
Del Toro will receive the President’s Award for making “a fundamental contribution to the development of film and cinema.” “The Usual Suspects” and his Oscar-winning turn in “Traffic” will be screened for the occasion. Ethan Hawke received the President’s Award last year.

The films in contention for the 2022 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Cruella,” “Cyrano,” “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” and “West Side Story.” Our current odds show “Cruella” (16/5) to be the frontrunner, followed in order by “Dune” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “Nightmare Alley” (9/2), and “Cyrano” (9/2).
Jenny Beavan’s nomination for “Cruella” is her 11th and could result in her third win, as she previously bagged trophies for “A Room with a View” (1987) and “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2016). She would be the 11th costumer to achieve as many victories and already ranks as the eighth most-nominated one. Her other eight bids came for “The Bostonians” (1985), “Maurice” (1988), “Howards End” (1993), “The Remains of the Day” (1994), “Sense and Sensibility” (1996), “Anna and the King” (2000), “Gosford Park” (2002), and “The King’s Speech” (2011). The first five films for which she was nominated were all directed by James Ivory.

After winning Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress at the 2021 Emmy Awards for her acclaimed turn as detective Mare Sheehan on the crime drama “Mare of Easttown,” Kate Winslet has now raked in a corresponding Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her work on the HBO series. Should the now 13-time nominee have a good night and reign victorious on at the SAG Awards on Sunday night, she’ll take home her fourth career award from the actors guild (and hopefully emulate this moment of exuberance from her Emmy acceptance speech).
In the limited series/TV movie actress category, Winslet finds herself in the company of four actors who are vying for their inaugural SAG Awards wins, including her onscreen “Mare” mom Jean Smart, as well as Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), Cynthia Erivo (“Genius: Aretha”), and Margaret Qualley (“Maid”). Of these four, Smart has the most nominations to her name with four,...

Big news for Paul Thomas Anderson’s awards campaign as his film “Licorice Pizza” was named the best picture of the year by the National Board of Review. The MGM and United Artists Releasing movie also picked up prizes for directing, and shared the breakthrough performance award for newcomers Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman.
Another newcomer having a great day is Latina Rachel Zegler, who won best actress for her turn in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story.” She is just the second Latina to ever win the category since Fernanda Montenegro in “Central Station” (1998).
Will Smith has kicked off his awards race in a big way by being named best actor for “King Richard,” while his co-star Aunjanue Ellis nabbed supporting actress.
Veteran actor Ciaran Hinds picked up what’s sure to be the first of many prizes of the season for his performance in Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast.

When Denis Villeneuve first approached costume designer Jacqueline West to work on Dune, she flatly refused. “‘No, I don’t do sci-fi,'” West remembers telling the filmmaker.
Determined, Villeneuve circled back weeks later and asked again, but West wouldn’t budge. “Denis, I love your work,” she told him, “but this just isn’t my genre.”

Now set to be released in theaters and HBO Max on October 22nd, we have an extended look at the new Dune movie that should give you a much better idea of what to expect from the latest Denis Villeneuve epic:
Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve directs Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Dune,” the big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal bestseller of the same name.
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

Before we say goodbye to 2000 and move forward to the next Smackdown year, 1946, I'd like to take a look at the Best Costume Design Oscar race. Take it as a digestif to our coverage. In any case, this specific lineup offers a remarkably comprehensive overview of some of the category's favorite elements and most glaring blind spots. As always, period work dominates, though there's also space for fantasy and contemporary narratives, intersections of fashion and costume, as well as a non-English-language movie. The nominees were…
Anthony Powell, 102 Dalmatians Rita Ryack, How the Grinch Stole Christmas Jacqueline West, Quills Janty Yates, Gladiator ★ Tim Yip, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
First up, let's look at the period films and, more specifically, our victor.

The creation of the supporting Oscar categories in 1937 clarified the intention that the lead acting categories are meant to honor true star turns. While most Best Actor wins have aligned with that idea, there have been more than a few whose placement has been called into question due to low screen time. Here is a look at the 10 shortest winners in the category:
10. Gary Cooper (“High Noon”)
40 minutes, 57 seconds (48.35% of the film)
Five-time Best Actor Oscar nominee Cooper earned his second win in 1953 for playing morally conflicted Marshal Will Kane in “High Noon.” By appearing in less than half of the 85-minute film, Cooper made history by holding two screen time records at once. At the time, his one-hour, 30-minute, 55-second performance in 1941’s “Sergeant York” was the longest to have won in the Best Actor category. His second win broke a 21-year record for shortest, which was previously held...

In a year that presents the opportunity for new and diverse voices in the awards race, another one has been added to the mix for best original score. Variety has learned exclusively that neo-classical composer Amelia Warner will helm the music for John Patrick Shanley’s “Wild Mountain Thyme” starring Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan.
Best known for her work on Haifaa al-Mansour’s “Mary Shelley” in 2018, Warner has dabbled both in music and acting. With roles in “Quills,” “Aeon Flux” and “Winter Passing,” this film marks just her third film composition. Warner was named the breakthrough composer of the year at the 2019 International Film Music Critics Awards.
While the awards season could present a record-breaking number of women nominated in categories like best picture and director, the race for best original score is very limited for female composers. Warner hopes to break through the male-heavy list of contenders that...

Kate Winslet didn’t hold back. Okay, she wouldn’t admit to actors who were difficult. “We’re not going there,” she told Variety’s Jenelle Riley with a laugh. But the lively half-hour exchange on October 9 covered her early career; the tough moments of her latest film, “Ammonite”; and promoting movies during Covid. On July 6, 2019, actor Geoffrey Rush celebrates his 68th birthday. The actor is one of the rare few who have achieved the triple crown of acting, meaning he has received an Emmy, Oscar and Tony Award (all three major acting awards) for his work.
SEEWho Needs a Grammy to Reach Egot?
Rush was an acclaimed actor in his native Australia for nearly two decades before the film “Shine” made him a known commodity in the rest of the world. He was 45 years old when suddenly his whole career changed and he was being considered for major roles in various mediums. That film about a pianist dealing with scars from his childhood won Rush the Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award for Best Actor. Those awards and acclaim launched him into a highly successful international career. He has since earned even more Oscar nominations, with two as Best Supporting Actor for...

Have you heard that news that Annette Bening and Michelle Pfeiffer have signed on as the leading ladies of a new feature film? If you've heard that news than you'll understand that I, Nathaniel, am typing this from heaven as I must have died and gone there for this to be true. Last thing I remember I was on a plane back to NYC (more on where I've been shortly) and then I was dead. Death by actressexuality. What a way to go.
The future film what done me in is called Turn of Mind and it's based on the novel of the same name by Alice Laplante. Gideon Raff (best known for creating the Israeli series that TV's Homeland is based on) will be directing the thriller with Doug Wright (Quills) doing the screenplay. Annette Bening plays Dr Jennifer White, a retiree suffering from Alzheimers and...

Since 1986 the Berlin International Film Festival has presented the Berlinale Camera to film personalities or institutions to which it feels particularly indebted and wishes to express its thanks.
U.S. producer and Ifp founder Sandra Schulberg was among four to receive the award at the 69th edition of the festival.
Sandra Schulberg, Founder of the Ifp (Independent Filmmaker Project) (USA)
Sandra Schulberg, a long-time activist on behalf of filmmakers working outside the Hollywood studios, is being recognised by the Berlinale for her 40 years of service to the field. Schulberg founded the Independent Filmmaker Project (Ifp) in 1979, and one year later co-founded the independent distribution company First Run Features. She also serves on the advisory committee of the Women’s Film Preservation Fund, established by New York Women in Film & Television.
In 2008 she launched IndieCollect, a national campaign to save indie films from extinction and this is her passionately felt mission today.

Kate Winslet represents the third generation of actors in her family. Her grandparents ran a repertory theater in England and her father struggled for many years as an actor himself while working other jobs to support his family. Winslet however found incredible success quite early in her career and by the time she turned 30, she had already received four Oscar nominations and played the female lead in the biggest box office blockbuster Hollywood had ever seen, “Titanic.”
While success in films came easy for Winslet, the one thing that did seem to elude her for a long time was recognition from the Academy. She would have to wait through five Oscar losses before the award would finally come her away for the 2008 movie “The Reader.” She would lampoon her Oscar troubles (and ironically receive an Emmy nomination) on an episode of the Ricky Gervais comedy “Extras.” On that show Winslet...

Happy birthday June 2nd-ers! Here's what was happening in showbiz or showbiz-related history on the day you were born...
1740 The Marquis de Sade is born. Lives on in immortal infamy and morphs into Geoffrey Rush in 2000 for the SAG & Golden Globe nominated Quills. I always forget that that movie Won Best Picture at the Nbr and then wasn't even Oscar nominated for Best Picture (a thing that doesn't happen super often.)
1865 The American Civil War reaches a major turning point signalling the end (basically) when the final Confederate army ceases to exist with a surrender in Missississippi. There's a million movies on the matter. The wounds have obviously become reinfected of late, so expect even more.
1904 Athlete and movie star Johnny Weismuller born in Austria-Hungary (in what is now Romania)...

Universal Music Classics/Decca Gold announced today, the release of the score to the highly anticipated biopic from IFC Films, Mary Shelley, which features original music by composer Amelia Warner (Mum’s List). Mary Shelley will be released digitally on May 25th – the same date the film premieres in theaters in the Us.
In describing the composition process, Amelia emphasized the ghostly themes of the film by utilizing vocalists and orchestral rhythms to assist in telling this illuminating tale.
“We used a lot of synths layered with the orchestra. The real strings layered with electric synths created a strangeness and modernity that I think works well with Mary’s character. We found some amazing musicians and two incredible singers who are a huge part of the score. We used a soprano and a counter tenor and had them sing in a very expressive way. For example, when things start to...
