Rupert Everett is opening up about his relationship with Madonna.
The 65-year-old My Best Friend’s Wedding star reflected on his time in Hollywood, including working on the 2000 film The Next Best Thing with the 65-year-old pop icon, in an interview on How to Fail With Elizabeth Day.
“Friendships and failure in Hollywood are very difficult things to keep going,” he began.

He added that the film “was definitely a strain” on their friendship.
When asked if they’d ever reconnect, he said: “Well, possibly. I don’t know.”
“I think it’s very difficult for her to be in films because everyone has such a preconception. And I don’t know how she could ever be good enough to make people say, ‘Oh, God, that’s really good.’ I think it was great having her in the film,” he went on.

While 2000’s The Next Best Thing was a critical flop, another more personal tragedy happened behind the scenes.
Rupert Everett recently reflected on starring in the John Schlesinger-helmed romantic comedy and how it put a “strain” on his friendship with co-star Madonna, which is why he now looks “the other way” when the film is on TV.
“It was not a failure as such really at the box office because of video sales in those days – Madonna sold a lot of videos – but the film itself didn’t work, even though for a long time, it was the only film that dealt with this issue that was actually then happening and being born,” Everett said on the How to Fail podcast.
Written by Tom Ropelewski, The Next Best Thing starred Madonna as Abbie and Everett as her gay best friend Robert, with whom she has a baby after a drunken night of intimacy.

Rupert Everett has revealed he asked Ridley Scott for a role in the upcoming Gladiator II, but to no avail.
The British actor has written a new book called The American No, which he describes as the process of being courted by Hollywood, with producers waxing lyrical about a script and how they “can’t wait to work with you” but with no result.
Everett told The Times of London he appeared in Ridley Scott’s 2023 epic Napoleon as the Duke of Wellington, and went on to phone him about a role in Scott’s big-budget sequel to his 2000 blockbuster Gladiator.
Everett said: “I rang him up and said, ‘Please, Ridley, can I be in Gladiator?” and he said, ‘Ok, I’ll see what I can do.’ And then nothing happened.” He continued: “He’s doing another film and I’m hoping to get into that.”

Some Madonna songs have an important message. The Queen of Pop revealed that she didn’t like the song at first. She decided it had a meaningful story at its center.
One of Madonna‘s songs is about a father-daughter relationship. Madonna herself expected the track to get misinterpreted. Despite this, a famous activist praised the song.
1 of Madonna’s songs was ‘a celebration of life’ that was designed to ruffle feathers
During a 1986 interview with The New York Times, Madonna discussed her attitude as an artist. “I like challenge and controversy — I like to tick people off,” she said.
The Queen of Pop then mentioned one of the most controversial songs of her career. “‘Papa Don’t Preach’ is a message song that everyone is going to take the wrong way,” Madonna said. “Immediately, they’re going to say I am advising every young girl to go out and get pregnant.

Apparently, Madonna has a vendetta against Scorpios, at least according to Ryan Murphy.
Years ago, the Glee creator said he was contacted by Lakeshore Entertainment founder Tom Rosenberg, asking him to interview the Queen of Pop about her life for the 2000 film The Next Best Thing.
Madonna starred in the romance drama opposite Rupert Everett.
“I flew to New York and in the elevator ride up to meet Madonna for the very first time with Tom, he turned to me and said, ‘I forgot to ask you, when is your birthday?’” Murphy told Glee co-stars Jenna Ushkowitz and Kevin McHale on a new episode of their And That’s What You Really Missed podcast.
“I said, ‘What?’ And he said ‘When is your birthday?’ and I said ‘I’m November 9th.’ And he goes, ‘Are you a Scorpio?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ And he goes, ‘You can’t tell that to her,...

A series by Christopher James investigating the 'Gay Best Friend' trope
Both Madonna and Rupert Everett made some key mistakes in "The Next Best Thing."Gay men love their one named divas, and with good reason. Madonna is in the upper echelon of gay icons. Her outspoken nature, incredible discography, ever-evolving persona and culture-defining fashion have given her a remarkably enduring legacy that should be lauded. Still, every gay icon has a few flops in their closet.
The Next Best Thing has been virtually wiped from the world. Unavailable from all streaming platforms (including transactional video on demand services), in order to gaze upon this Sodom and Gomorrah of filmmaking I had to order a used DVD from an Amazon seller. The Next Best Thing both did and did not disappoint. It's an epically misguided trainwreck not just in scope (the film takes place over a 7 year period) but in...

When life gives you lemons, er, quarantine, it’s best to at least try and make lemonade. That’s what Madonna and Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody are currently up to, as the pop star revealed via Instagram on Saturday. The pair appear to be working on a musically centered screenplay, according to the black-and-white video posted on Madge’s account. “When you’re stuck in a house with multiple injuries, what do you do?” she wrote. “Write a screenplay with Diablo Cody about…” and then a bunch of emojis alluding to the script being film- and music-related. Watch the video below.
The screenplay may even be about Madonna herself, as she is seen in the video describing her inimitable and iconic Jean-Paul Gaultier “Blonde Ambition” satin cone-bra look from her 1990 tour. “The garters were over the suit bottoms, right?” Cody asks. “Yeah,” Madonna says. “Straight pin-striped pants sit beneath the...

Taika Waititi should be used to all the praise by now. "Not enough. I want to hear more," the director joked during a sit-down with Et to discuss his new -- and yes, highly praised -- movie, Thor: Ragnarok. "Let's keep it going, because it won't last. And then I'll just be seeking for some more compliments...It's like a drug for me, compliments."

Some networks wait a lifetime for a moment like this.
ABC has tried for nearly 20 years to launch a hit music competition series. Now, it has finally acquired one: “American Idol,” which ended its run last year on Fox, will relaunch next spring on the network. Details are slim, including new judges and who will host. (“Idol” veteran Ryan Seacrest, now firmly a part of the ABC family as co-host of “Live with Kelly and Ryan,” was not mentioned in the press release.) But the network and producers FremantleMedia North America and Core Media Group made the announcement Tuesday morning.
ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey called “American Idol” a “pop-culture staple that left the air too soon,” while Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC, said the show “is an entertainment icon, and now it will air where it belongs, in ABC’s lineup of addictive fan...

Daniel Craig has made it clear he hates playing James Bond. Sean Connery refused to take part in a Bond retrospective. George Lazenby became a car salesman. The chances of a full-on 007 team-up are sadly slim.
The next best thing? Immortalise them all in waxwork, of course. Madame Tussauds London has unveiled all six Bonds from Connery to Craig for a limited six-week attraction. Click the photo above for a closer look.
Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig will then go on a tour of Tussauds attractions around the world on December 1.
Created in a partnership with Eon Productions, the waxworks feature the 007 agents in their classic dinner suits designed by Oscar-winner Lindy Hemming.
It took 20 artists four months to complete the project, costing a whopping £150,000 for each model.

It’s going to take me a bit to get to comics this week, so please bear with me. We have a lot of outrage to get through first.
Recently, country singer Tim McGraw decided that, when he was in Hartford, Connecticut on his national tour, he would do a benefit concert for the charity Sandy Hook Promise. This organization was started after the shootings at the Sandy Hook elementary school and describes their mission thusly:
“1) Protect children from gun violence so no other parent experiences the loss of their child by engaging and empowering parents and communities with targeted prevention programs in the areas of mental wellness early-identification & intervention, social & emotional development and firearm safety & security.
“2) Help our community through this tragedy by providing resources and programs that foster connection, resiliency and overall wellness.”

Madonna recently opened up about her newest blonde ambition: comedy. "I like the idea of me sitting on a chair with a table, maybe a drink or two, and just talking about my life," she said. "I'd say funny things and tell funny stories. It would be funny. Call it sit-down comedy." Some of Madonna's official attempts at comedy -- namely "Shanghai Surprise" and "The Next Best Thing" -- haven't been successful, but the superstar is easily one of the funniest interviewees still in the game today. She sits down for her first interview with Howard Stern this week, and if that doesn't produce the funniest celebrity banter of the year, we've been cheated. To celebrate Madonna's new album "Rebel Heart" (out today) and her general hilarity, let's take a look back at her funniest moments.

The next best thing to watching Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch break tackle after tackle is catching a glimpse of his postgame interviews. Even though they usually last about 30 seconds, with quick, dry answers (“Yup,” “Thanks for asking, boss,” and “I’m here so I won’t get fined”), Beast Mode has become an anti-media hero around the league due to his consistent shunning of the press.
With the Super Bowl Xlix finally here, best believe all cameras are focused on Lynch and the reigning champs. Before kickoff, take notes from Lynch’s personal playbook.

I love binge-watching series on Netflix and Hulu, and sometimes I wish I could binge-watch The Walking Dead for the first time. The next best thing, though, is watching people who have never seen the series before watch it for the first time. I find a lot of joy watching the reactions of people seeing something for the first time that I've already seen for myself. If you do too, you're going to enjoy this video.
A German couple set up a camera, and filmed themselves watching all 51 episodes of The Walking Dead, and then released the footage as a time-lapse video. The video switches to regular speed at big, life-changing moments in the series. They ended up getting through the whole series in 3 days.

The next best thing to watching a complete performance in a finished movie is the very uncompleted, often disheveled audition tape featuring said actor or actress attempting to become the character for the first time in order to land the gig. There's just something about watching old audition tapes that gets the mind buzzing and the nostalgia churning. We especially dig 'em when they feature different actors providing their interpretation of a character they never played. Check out this fun supercut featuring some of the more popular audition tapes floating around online. You've got everyone from Leonardo DiCaprio auditioning for The Outsiders to Tom Cruise's audition for Risky Business. In between you'll get to watch audition tapes tied to Game of Thrones...

It's a shock to go back and watch "Midnight Cowboy" 45 years after its debut (on May 25, 1969) and see how raw and otherworldly it looks. After all, the X-rated Best Picture Oscar-winner has been so thoroughly assimilated into American pop culture that even kiddie entertainments like the Muppets have copied from it.
The tale of the unlikely friendship between naïve Texas gigolo Joe Buck (Jon Voight) and frail Bronx con man Enrico "Ratso" Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman), "Midnight Cowboy" was initially considered so risqué that it's the only X-rated movie ever to win the Academy's top prize (though after it won, the ratings board reconsidered and gave the film an R). Still, the film featured two lead performances and a few individual scenes that were so iconic that homages (and parodies) have popped up virtually everywhere. (Most often imitated is the scene where Ratso, limping across a busy Manhattan street, is nearly...

Motorbike chases are awesome. They are the quintessential action piece. They represent speed, power, and individuality. When we see a motorcycle, we see the rider as a cool, lone hero or heroine. We have to think only of certain pop culture icons and their motorcycles to get the picture – we can all remember the image of The Bride and her yellow Kawasaki in Kill Bill, Keira Knightley atop the sleek Ducati in the Chanel advert and Jack Nicholson riding his chopper in Easy Rider. These examples are memorable yet don’t even feature a chase. The motorcycle alone is a symbolic machine we can all admire. So if we add a chase to the equation, we’re given a fast, cool and symbolic piece of cinema – a two wheeled slice of awesome pie.
Chase scenes in films often stand out as they provide audiences with a breath-taking spectacle. The most common type of chase,...

Against all better judgment, the Fast and Furious series has become the de facto action film franchise of a generation. It’s come this far because of the willingness of the actors and directors to let it remain malleable, often tinkering with the fundamental notions of what each film should be much in the same way Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner and Vin Diesel’s Dom Torreto are constantly tinkering with their endless array of cars. After the ridiculously fun jolt of energy that was 2011’s heist extravaganza Fast Five, the gang is back again for another go-round with Fast and Furious 6 (or as the title card rightfully calls it, Furious 6).
After their big score in Rio from Fast Five, each member has gone their separate ways with the loot. Some, like Tyrese’s Roman, have flaunted their cash while others like O’Conner have tried to change their...

At first glance, the new film Gayby sounds like a remake of the Madonna film The Next Best Thing. Both films are about two best friends—a straight woman and a gay man—who have a baby together after giving up on finding serious relationships. But where The Next Best Thing delves into the melodrama that comes later in life as they raise the child together, Jonathan Lisecki's Gayby focuses on the comedic foibles that result from these two friends trying to procreate together “the old-fashioned way.”

You have one chance to figure out what “Gayby” is about. If you said “gay baby,” ding ding ding, you got it! Or maybe it should be “baby with a gay,” but at any rate, “Gayby” treads the familiar narrative path of the contentious relationship between the single woman and her biological clock. Much like Madonna and Rupert Everett in “The Next Best Thing,” college buds Jenn and Matt (Jennifer Harris and Matthew Wilkas, real-life college buds -- check out their snapshots in the title sequence) decide to make a go of this whole babymaking business (yes, the old-fashioned way). “Gayby” is a slight little comedy, definitely amusing enough while exploring well known territory. Director Jonathan Lisecki throws you into this world without a lot of intro to the characters, so it can take a moment to warm up to them, including the sassy effeminate bear Nelson (played by Lisecki...

Rupert Everett's new memoir has landed him in hot water. Again. But he thinks we just need to lighten up
Poor old Rupert Everett thought he'd taken every care to say nothing in his first memoir that could upset his friend Madonna. Then the book came out, she threw a strop and stopped talking to him. His new memoir is less scandalously gossipy, so further fallings-out had looked unlikely – but before its release this week, he was already in hot water again. Everett can't understand it. "What's happened to humour? We're becoming American. Everyone gets so angry over everything."
But I'm not sure how much he really cares, and to my mind you'd have to be even more humourless than Madonna to hold anything against him. After reading Vanished Years, I didn't just want to buy the book but kidnap its author and gallivant about town with him for ever.

There were definitely some funny moments, but probably because creator David Zuckerman dubbed it "maybe [the] funniest ep yet," I was considerably disappointed by "Avoidance."
Don't get me wrong, Kristen's entire performance was fantastic, and it was probably the best use of Dorian Brown yet. The only thing that topped Ryan's friend's ridiculously idiotic inside jokes was Kristen's reaction to each and every one of them.
Whether it was laughing at everything he said, even though she had no idea what the joke was, or attempting to add to the laugh with quips like "that poor duck," she was probably the highlight of the night.
The next best thing about "Avoidance" was the pair of big dance sequences. Yes, I realize there were more than two dancing scenes, but I'm talking about the big numbers.

He’s not a name that many young filmmakers reference these days, but British director John Schlesinger quietly managed a career spanning five decades, with a small fistful of classics to his name. A former actor, Schlesinger moved into documentaries in the late 1950s, graduating to features soon after, and worked fairly prolifically until 2000’s “The Next Best Thing” (admittedly a rather ignominious end to a great career), a film released only a few months before he passed away from a stroke. This week marks the ninth anniversary of his death, on July 25, 2003, and with the recent news that his “Sunday Bloody Sunday” is getting the Criterion treatment, it felt like a good time to push past the acclaimed Hollywood pictures that everyone knows -- “Midnight Cowboy,” “Marathon Man” -- and look at some of the director’s works that go less celebrated these days. A master visual storyteller, Schlesinger was able to.
