There are few director/actor combinations quite as good as Tony Scott and Denzel Washington. The duo made five movies together ranging from "The Taking of Pelham 123" remake to the downright excellent "Crimson Tide," which marked their first collaboration. Their final film together came in 2010 in the form of "Unstoppable," which is not only one of the actor's best thrillers, but also Scott's final film. It now feels like a gift, but Washington almost backed out of the project entirely.
For context, Washington was at the height of his powers at this time. The actor finally won a Best Actor Oscar in 2001 for his role in "Training Day" (he had previously won Best Supporting Actor for "Glory"), which led to a string of solid hits throughout the early 2000s, culminating in 2007s "American Gangster," which recently found new life...

Through the decades, Denzel Washington has become one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors. The actor has continually redefined what it means to be a leading man and has been known for his commanding presence, and incredible talent.
However, despite the 69-year-old’s impressive range of characters across genres, the industry has seen him through a narrow lens, casting him in roles that emphasize authority, intensity, or even moral complexity.

This perception, however, was challenged by his performance in the 2001 crime thriller Training Day. In the film, Washington transformed into a seasoned but ruthlessly corrupt detective with unparalleled finesse and proved that he can’t be typecast.

Uwe Boll is no stranger to controversy in the film world. The German director first made waves in the early 2000s with low-budget video game adaptations that were savaged by many critics as spectacularly terrible. Called everything from the worst filmmaker ever to cinema’s true “Ed Wood,” reaction to Boll’s earlier projects was certainly vicious at times.
So when Boll returned in 2022 with First Shift, his first feature since 2016, expectations were understandably mixed. Set in New York City, First Shift pairs a hardened veteran detective with an eager rookie partner for their first shift together. On paper, it sounded like the makings of a gritty police drama in the vein of Training Day. In practice, would Boll’s filmmaking abilities have evolved at all?

Last Friday, Paramount Pictures hosted the first screening of Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” (November 22) on its studio lot. This week came the junket screenings, and between them, many over-the-top reactions that praised the Paul Mescal-starring follow-up — in which he bulked up way beyond his “Normal People” physique — as one of the great sequels. With those typically fanboy-level first reactions behind us, how does the film actually stack up, and especially in terms of the Oscar race?
That’s the lens we, Anne Thompson and Ryan Lattanzio, co-hosts of IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” podcast, look at “Gladiator II” this week as the review embargo awaits. The sequel picks up two decades after the events of the first film, which won Best Picture and Russell Crowe Best Actor at the Oscars in 2001, with Maximus’ son Lucius (Mescal) brought to Rome from Africa by Roman general Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal). Eva Mendes has been taking a lengthy break from acting, in case you haven't noticed. The star of movies like "Training Day," "Hitch," and "The Other Guys" has been on hiatus since her last project, "Lost River," released in 2014. So what would it take to get her back in front of the camera? It's pretty simple: let her work with her real-life partner Ryan Gosling again.
Mendes spoke to Laura Pullman at The Telegraph (she and Gosling are currently stationed in London while he films "Project Hail Mary") and revealed that she would definitely do another project with Gosling, even though she admitted that acting was never a great love for her. "I was never in love with acting," Mendes revealed. "I don't mean this in a self-deprecating way, but I wasn't a great actress. I had my moments when I worked with really great people." Eva Mendes has only one condition to return to acting after her hiatus in Hollywood since 2014. She recently shared that she would take on a role only if she were cast opposite her husband Ryan Gosling. She even went on to make the comment that she was not a great actress, however, fans would strongly disagree.

A talent manager saw her photograph in her friend’s portfolio and thus began Mendes’ career in the industry. Eva Mendes says the only movie project that would persuade her to return to acting is one alongside her husband Ryan Gosling.
The couple have appeared in two films together, Drunk History Christmas (2011) and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)
Mendes, whose other hits include Training Day (2001), Hitch (2005) and The Other Guys (2010), walked away from the industry in 2014, and she explained in an interview with The Sunday Times newspaper that it wasn’t a challenge for her to leave the profession:

Are you not entertained by this year’s exciting and unpredictable Oscar race? Well, you should be because Ridley Scott’s epic and potentially huge blockbuster sequel, “Gladiator II,” has exploded onto the scene following its first screening in Los Angeles in front of an audience of AMPAS and SAG voters.
The long-awaited sequel to best picture winner “Gladiator” (2000) is igniting the spark for Scott, its three-time Oscar-nominated director, to be in the running to win his long-coveted Academy Award. Additionally, his stars Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington are now contenders in their respective acting races.
After picking up his first best actor Oscar nomination for “Aftersun” (2022), Mescal could find himself back in the category for his “Gladiator II” leading role. Meanwhile, Washington, who already has two acting Oscars, could be in contention for a third, potentially joining a small list of three-time acting winners, including Frances McDormand, Jack Nicholson,...

It’s a whodunnit by way of an action movie.
Lionsgate has picked up The Professionals, an original feature for the action professionals at 87Eleven Entertainment to produce along with Mandalay Pictures.
Hunter Perot, the grandson of late business executive and presidential candidate Ross Perot, wrote the initial draft of the screenplay, which is now being penned by Madison Turner, a stuntman-turned-scribe who is the son of Tierre Turner, a stunt performer and coordinator who has worked on movies such as Training Day and is currently on 9-1-1.
The stunt connection is key, as it was one of the factors that brought the players together.
Chad Stahelski, the stunt maestro-turned-filmmaker behind the John Wick movies, is producing along with his 87Eleven partners Alex Young and Jason Spitz. Mandalay Pictures’ Jason Michael Berman and Jordan Moldo, who originated the project, are also producing.
Professionals is described as a combustible mix of Clue and John Wick.

King Kong did not, in fact, have, er, doo-doo on Denzel Washington at the turn of the 21st century. Fresh off his second Oscar win (and his first as a lead performer) for playing dirty LAPD detective Alonzo Harris in Antoine Fuqua's "Training Day," the capital-m Movie Star made a habit of working with his old friends over the decade that followed. Indeed, if one were to run through his resume, one would note that most of Washington's films in the 2000s were directed by either one of his former collaborators or Denzel himself. Then again, if your pals were Spike Lee, Tony Scott, Jonathan Demme, and the under-appreciated Carl Franklin, you'd want to make all of your movies with them too.

The 2007 crime drama "American Gangster" began its life as a 2000 New York Times article called "The Return of Superfly," written by journalist Marc Jacobs. The article detailed the rise and fall of Frank Lucas, a Harlem drug kingpin who operated in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Lucas was apprehended and jailed in 1976 and sentenced to 70 years in prison, but was able to get his sentence shortened by becoming an FBI informant. He was a criminal who took a job with the cops -- notably, Detective Richie Roberts -- who collared him.
Star screenwriter Steve Zaillian wrote a massively long adaptation of Jacobs' article and showed it to director Ridley Scott as early as 2002. Scott declined to direct it, however, choosing to work on his ancient war epic "Kingdom of Heaven" instead. The screenplay, called "True Blu" at the time, also crossed the desk of Brian de Palma. Denzel Washington, one of the best actors of his generation, has been on a hot streak ever since he began acting in films in 1981. He had turned in dozens of great, memorable performances, typically playing stalwart, principled, and confident characters; it's rare that you'll find Washington playing a sniveling, weak-willed man. His role in Antoine Fuqua's 2001 cop drama "Training Day" was an aberration for Washington, as his character, Detective Alonzo Harris, committed open acts of violent corruption. He was the villain of the piece and a man who needed to be taught a lesson by his rookie sidekick, the overwhelmed Jake Hoyt, played by Ethan Hawke.
Despite his villainy, however, Alonzo was also a principled character who believed his violent corruption was ultimately an effective tool against his city's criminal underworld. "They build jails because of me," he says at one point. "Judges have handed out over 15,000 man-years of...

Is Eva Mendes fully retired from acting, or will she step back in front of the camera again sometime in the future? Honestly, she's not sure.
10 years after her last film appearance — in her partner Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, "Lost River," where she plays a supporting role as a dancer named Cat — Mendes thinks she had a pretty good run and doesn't appear eager to mess with her acting legacy. Antoine Fuqua's 2001 cop drama "Training Day" is notable for its hellish tone, gritty photography, and amazing central performance from the incomparable Denzel Washington. Indeed, "Training Day" won Washington his second acting Academy Award for playing LAPD Detective Alonzo Harris, the most horrible and corrupt cop on the force. Ethan Hawke plays Jake Hoyt, the cop assigned to learn from Alonzo on the day before his promotion. Hoyt will get a disturbing crash course in how deeply the violence and corruption of the LAPD really runs.

The Academy Awards has nominated and rewarded Denzel Washington quite a few times due to his highly acclaimed performances. After winning his first award, however, he was very tight-lipped about where he put the statue.

Washington famously took home an Academy Award for the first time after his performance in 1989’s Glory. He won for Best Supporting Actor back then, which had been a dream of his since he was working in theater.

Denzel Washington has consistently delivered standout performances — including as a director in recent years! — across his decades-long career. He already has two Oscars to his name and could be on his way to a third Academy Award with his role in Ridley Scott‘s “Gladiator II.”
This follow-up to the 2000 Best Picture champ stars Lucius (Paul Mescal) as Lucius, the grandson of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. Lucius is forced into slavery but resolves to fight as a gladiator under the leadership of power broker Macrinus. And that’s where Washington comes in. The titanic Washington plays Macrinus, who is the mentor figure to Lucius and also opposes the rule of emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joseph Quinn).
We are predicting that Washington will be nominated for Best Supporting Actor alongside Samuel L. Jackson (“The Piano Lesson”), Clarence Maclin (“Sing Sing”), Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), and Stanley Tucci (“Conclave...

Many film enthusiasts consider Dead Poets Society as one of the most cherished movies of the late actor Robin Williams. In the film, Williams’ character English teacher John Keating is a true outlier in the strict setting of the elite boarding school. Playing one of the students in the film is a young Ethan Hawke in his breakthrough performance. However, Hawke and Williams did not get along greatly.

Earlier in his career, though, he admitted he did not feel comfortable in front of a camera. He shared how he overcame this feeling.

When Snoop began his career, he was a rapper. In the years since, while he continues to make music, he has acted, hosted shows, and started businesses. He said he realized his career could be more than just music when he acted in the 1994 short film Murder Was the Case. Roland Emmerich and Antoine Fuqua may have each helmed a dueling White House invasion movie in 2013, but it was all love between them at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday.
Collider brought two of the most successful action directors of all time together in Hall H to discuss their work in a panel moderated by Steven Weintraub.
“Right before shooting, maybe a month before, I learned he was shooting another one that was called ‘Olympus Has Fallen,'” Emmerich said — revealing he actually watched Fuqua’s film on a plane. “I thought, this is such a better title than ‘White House Down.'”
Fuqua, who also confirmed he’s seen Emmerich’s film, added, “I figured there’s room for those stories. Obviously, it’s two different directors, two different visions on that.” He said the comparisons only fueled the fire inside to step his own game up, continuing, “When you...

Ron Shelton's "Dark Blue" was a victim of impossible expectations. James Ellroy wrote the screenplay in 1993 (then titled "The Plague Season"), envisioning Kurt Russell in the role of racist LAPD Sergeant Eldon Perry. The story takes place in a jittery city awaiting the riot-inciting verdict of the Rodney King trial. We know what's coming in the macro, but the micro tale of Perry and his partner Bobby Keough (Scott Speedman) being forced to frame a couple of ex-cons for murders committed by informants loyal to their corrupt superior Jack Van Meter (Brendan Gleeson) could break either way. This being Ellroy, the master of corrosive neo-l.A. noir, we're expecting everything to go down twisted. But with the riots looming, Perry and Keough's errand feels destined to get extra messy.
Given its long road to a greenlight, "Dark Blue" acquired the aura of a passion project for Ellroy. And since he tended to spin sprawling,...
