Joaquin Phoenix made his professional acting debut in the 1985 TV movie "Kids Don't Tell," a heady primetime drama about child victims of sexual assault. Phoenix was only 11 at the time. The following year, Phoenix first appeared in theaters in the kid-friendly drama "SpaceCamp," about teenagers and children who are accidentally launched into space. Phoenix continued to land high-profile roles with interesting directors, appearing in Ron Howard's "Parenthood" in 1989 and Gun Van Sant's "To Die For" in 1995. Phoenix soon became an indie darling, and a go-to actor for extreme, quirky, sometimes dark roles. He played a kooky thug in Oliver Stone's "U Turn," and a wise pornographer in Joel Schumacher's "8mm."
By the time he appeared in Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" in 2000, Phoenix was a household name. The role earned him the first of four (to date) Academy Award nominations. He would also be nominated for playing Johnny Cash...

In 1997, Jennifer Lopez worked with director Oliver Stone in the film U-Turn. This was a bit of a surprising career move as she once swore to never work with Stone. When Lopez first auditioned for Stone for a different film, she found his attitude toward her appalling. Here’s what made her change his mind about the director.
Jennifer Lopez said director Oliver Stone did not make a good impression on her
In the early 1990s, before Lopez’s career took off, she auditioned for one of Stone’s films. The project never came to fruition, but it left a bad taste in Lopez’s mouth. She didn’t feel he gave her the appropriate amount of respect in her audition.
“The minute I began reading this long, four-page scene, he started walking around the room,” she told Movieline in 1998. “Then he began rearranging the furniture. I’m like, ‘What is he doing?...

In 1997, Jennifer Lopez and Sean Penn starred in U-Turn, an Oliver Stone thriller. Lopez expressed her pride at working with an actor of Penn’s caliber and said they got along well on set. So well, in fact, that she might have pursued a romantic connection with him had they not been in other relationships.
Jennifer Lopez said she would have had a ‘thing’ with Sean Penn in a different universe
When Lopez filmed U-Turn, she was engaged to her first husband, Ojani Noa. Penn was married to his second wife, actor Robin Wright. Still, both actors felt chemistry between them. When asked which of her co-stars she would have had a “thing” with in a parallel universe, Lopez named Penn.
“Should I get myself in trouble with my husband?” she asked Movieline in 1998. “Ok, in a parallel universe, Sean.”

On the movie screen, Jennifer Lopez is known for being a romantic comedy queen in films like "Maid in Manhattan," "Monster-in-Law," and "Marry Me." However, on Netflix, she appears to be pursuing a wholly different crown and going after action movie and genre glory. Sure, Lopez has made her share of genre thrillers, especially early in her career: "Money Train," "Anaconda," "U Turn," and "Out of Sight," most notably. Yet it's her turn in 2023's "The Mother" that marked her debut as a fully-fledged action star and now she's following that up with a lead performance in a big-budget sci-fi shoot 'em up, if the new trailer for Netflix's "Atlas" is any indication.

The actor has shared that he is essentially having a field day at work, more than he has ever had.

In the summer of 1996, Tom Cruise and director Brian De Palma achieved something that Hollywood would spend much of the next decade trying to replicate: a genuinely great movie adaptation of a popular television show that blew up at the box office. The first Mission: Impossible movie was somehow both an ode to the face-swapping, hi-tech hijinks of the original 1960s series while also serving as the perfect star vehicle for Cruise. Even De Palma was at the peak of his powers as an auteur, having just made his most underrated movie in Carlito’s Way.
In the years that followed, other big screen updates of small screen favorites would try to repeat the formula with often disastrous results. Film versions of shows like Wild Wild West, Lost in Space, The Avengers (not that one), and The Mod Squad all amounted to miserable trips to the multiplex. Meanwhile Mission: Impossible’s...

Crime thrillers are only fun to watch if the story is presented interestingly. U Turn happens to be a story based in the same genre, but we can’t guarantee the viewer will find it interesting because it felt like the makers steered away from the logic part of it and drove straight into a story that required plenty of suspension of disbelief and presented a commercial film that does not cater to the masses as well. Directed by Arif Khan, the movie is about people who take an illegal U-turn from a bridge, and they end up dead mysteriously. Who is behind this crime, and why are they committing this heinous killing?
Spoilers Ahead
Radhika’s Search For The Truth
The movie begins with a man driving along the Ntpc flyover in Chandigarh when he is asked to come back to a certain place by the caller on his phone.

When it comes to serial killer crime stories, it is always best to stick to the guidelines, which are to make them feel as real as possible; the technical aspects should be tight enough, and the lead-up to the climax should be interesting. There has to be a layer of complexity as well, which will make any form of cinema in this genre an interesting watch. What if you come across a film that does not live up to any of the expectations above? U Turn, directed by Arif Khan, is a Zee5 Original that was released on the platform on April 28, 2023, and the movie is all about road accidents. What the makers did not realize was that the movie might have been an accident itself, where everything related to it just stumbled, crumbled, and fell apart.

Twenty-five years after the international premiere of his graduation work “Banquet of The Beasts” in the Panorama section, and twenty-two after “Hole in the Sky”, Kazuyoshi Kumakiri is back in Berlin with the thriller “#Manhole” which celebrates its international premiere in the Berlinale Special program. In this one-man suspense drama, a relatively simple story of an unfortunate incident evolves into a film rich with unexpected twists.
#Manhole is screening at Berlinale
On the evening before his wedding day, Shunsuke (Yuto Nakajima) walks into into his own stag party he was unaware of. The mood is excellent: as congratulations pour in, so do drinks. A bit wobbly after a drink too many in a pub in Shibuya district, Shunsuke falls inside a manhole, and wakes up injured and unable to climb back to the street. To make things worse, his cellphone Gps stops working and a heavy rain starts falling making his situation more insufferable.

In "The Grey Man," the Russo brothers' latest expansive (and expensive) collaboration with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Billy Bob Thornton gets the "and" credit. That's fitting in terms of screentime, but it doesn't capture what Thornton brings to the film. His presence is the skeleton key to unlocking Marcus, McFeely, and the Russos' intentions. Thornton was one of the 1990s most prominent talents, a force in front of and behind the camera — sometimes in the same picture. "The Grey Man" deliberately rips its espionage and quip-to-dialogue ratio from the decade that made Thornton famous. Thornton gets this. He calibrated his whole performance as Donald Fitzroy — from its winking elements to sincerest stretches — knowing what "The Gray Man" is after. It's smooth. It's electric. That's peak Billy Bob Thornton.
Thornton has rarely stopped working or ceased being smooth or electric since his heyday more than two decades ago. He's...

Has there ever been a star like Jennifer Lopez? Never. What a long, weird, wonderful career she’s built — a whole new genre of celebrity, a one-woman paradigm shift in pop culture. She’s done it all. A little song, a little dance, a lot of movies, some romance.
The world’s most famous Latina. The world’s most famous Gen-Xer. A one-woman assault on cultural clichés. A gangster. A hustler. J.Lo’s career has been packed with glorious highs and a few hilariously disastrous lows, just because that’s how legends roll.

In 2005, Grandma Chen seems to have lost touch with her adopted daughter and decides to travel to Nara, Japan to search for her. With limited knowledge and facing language barriers, she embarks on a unique journey with the help of Xiao Ze (Ying Ze), who is half-Chinese and herself the child of a war orphan, as well as a retired police officer (Jun Kunimura).

Even if you have trouble with the idea of God, says veteran producer David Puttnam in Ennio, Giuseppe Tornatore’s rapturous paean to his late collaborator Ennio Morricone, when you hear his music, “you can hear that there is something out there.” By the standards of Ennio, the suggestion that God dwells in Morricone’s music is nowhere near over the top. “He’s my favorite composer,” whoops Quentin Tarantino, in a torrent of enthusiasm ferocious even by his standards. “And I’m not talking movie composer! I’m talking Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert!”
Ennio Morricone died last year, aged 91. Tornatore, whose best-known collaboration with the maestro was the Oscar-winning Cinema Paradiso (1988), spent five years assembling archival material and interviewing other directors, musicians and critics about his work. Morricone wrote everything from pop songs to experimental noise music but, of course, is known largely for having scored over 500 films.

Two men (Lee Kang-sheng and first time actor Anong Houngheuangsy) unknown to each other, living lives of silent isolation, have a brief but meaningful encounter, then go their separate ways.
That’s the bare-bones plot of “Days,” the latest from Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang, another chapter in the filmmaker’s three-decade long, contemplative examination of loneliness.
“Days” begins with Kang seated in a room at home, staring out a window at rain. Tsai’s usual filmmaking practice has often been associated with the Slow Cinema movement, consisting of a group of disparate filmmakers who, more than anything, share a welcome affinity for the kind of silence and deliberate action that mainstream cinema has abandoned. Appropriately, this opening shot is wordless, nearly motionless, and lasts about five minutes.
This is nothing new for a filmmaker famous for very long takes with minimal edits, yet also a fairly brief example, considering he ended his 2013 film,...

A plumber drills a hole between the basement of one apartment and the ceiling of another as a strange disease that causes people to act like cockroaches sweeps over Taiwan at the turn of the millennium. A depressed homeless man, desperate to provide for his family but invisible to the people who drive past his roadside advertising sign, violently mauls the cabbage that his young daughter has adopted as a friend. A Taipei cinema screens King Hu’s “Dragon Inn” during a torrential downpour on its final night in business as various patrons shuffle around inside the theater, each of them looking for a connection that seems to be flickering away forever before our eyes.
While Taiwanese auteur Tsai Ming-liang has long been associated with slow cinema, the non-linear deceleration of his style has been interjected with soaring dreamscapes, electric moments of self-reflexivity, and even a handful of sexually charged musical numbers.

"A spare, melancholy story..." Grasshopper Film has unveiled a US trailer for the film Days, the latest work from Taiwan-based filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang. This originally premiered at the 2020 Berlin Film Festival last year just before the pandemic shut everything down. It received some mixed reviews, with a few critics raving about it. The film is made up of nearly "two-dozen fixed-frame shots held for around 5 minutes each" and that's it. Set in Bangkok about two strangers. Kang lives alone in a big house, Non in a small apartment. They meet, and then part, their days flowing on as before. This stars Lee Kang-sheng and Anong Houngheuangsy. This slow cinema definitely isn't for everyone, but it should connect most with anyone already familiar with Tsai Ming-liang's style. Take a look. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Tsai Ming-liang's Days, direct from Grasshopper's YouTube: Under the pain of illness and treatment,...

We have been crazy about Tsai Ming-liang’s Days for quite a while—premiering at Berlin 2020, which will go down as the last gasp of film culture as we knew it before Covid completely rewrote the rules, will do that. Thus the movie’s occupied a nether region since: those who saw Days managed to land it on our best of 2020 list, while the rest of us call it one of the best 2021 films we’ve already seen. Having caught it on the festival circuit and being stunned yet again by Tsai’s complete, total mastery of a form oft-imitated but never bested, I dare call these lines arbitrary. What in fact matters is that Grasshopper Film will finally release Days on August 13. Thus the U.S. trailer is here to set a distinctly Tsai-ian tone.

The earliest cinematic detective is said to be 1900’s Sherlock Holmes Baffled, a minute-long case in which Conan-Doyle’s perrennial is up against a disappearing robber. You can see the short film here, and brief though it is – this is where it all began.
In the one and a fifth centuries since, cinema has seen its fair share of celluloid sleuths. It is an evergreen concept, one which can adapt to many genres. Today sees the release of Adam Brody’s The Kid Detective, a wonderful comedy noir in which a once-celebrated young detective is hired for his first case as an adult by a desperate woman hoping to solve a mystifying crime. Lê Bảo’s debut feature, Taste, is a stark marvel of oblique storytelling and some pretty wondrous imagery. It tells the story of Bassley (Olegunleko Ezekiel Gbenga), a Nigerian immigrant in Ho Chi Minh City who, upon losing his contract as a soccer player, takes up a tenuous, marginal existence with a group of four female factory workers. The group partly inhabits an abandoned industrial building, with some trips to the slummy huts that jut on the water, and embarks on long, ritualistic bouts of fragrant cooking.Taste is an exquisitely quiet film, often told through silent, arresting tableaux. But in one of the rare scenes where Bassley speaks, we learn that he’s lost his father, and that his own small son—whom we watch in a gorgeous scene in which father and son mimic each other eating a watermelon—can only see one another through videos, played on an old screen.
