Hulu has greenlighted Phony, a comedy pilot starring and executive produced by Connie Britton, from Drew Goddard’s Goddard Textiles and 20th Television.
Written, directed and executive produced by Nick Paley (Marcel The Shell With Shoes On), Phony is a comedic coming-of-age mystery about a teenager, Sonny, who wakes up in the hospital after a car accident to discover his mom — his only parent and his best friend — appears to have been replaced by an impostor.
Britton will play Sonny’s single mom Ellen and the principal of his high school.
The pilot brings Britton back to her comedy roots — she started her career with an arc on Ellen before landing a lead role opposite Michael J. Fox on Spin City.
Britton and Paley executive produce Phony alongside Charlie Alderman of Charlie’s Production Company and Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg via Goddard Textiles. Goddard Textiles’ Andrea Massaro is a producer.

For Richard Kind, joining “Only Murders in the Building” Season 4 in the role of West Tower resident Vince Fish didn’t take too much convincing.
“They offered it to me. They said, ‘We’ll give you money if you play the part.’ I said, ‘Good, that’s good enough for me’,” the veteran actor of TV, film and theater told TheWrap in an interview when asked what drew him to the role. “If a show that’s produced by Dan Fogelman and John Hoffman, starring Marty Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez says they want you to work with them. You drop everything and you do it. I don’t care if they had me on the toilet reading the Yellow Pages. You do it. I am drawn to these creative people and I trust them because their talent cannot be contained to a page. They’re just spectacular.”

When we talk about movies being hard to categorize or even succinctly summarize, this movie is the poster child for that statement. Almost 50 years on and that still holds true but how about is it good? Does a movie need to be put in a specific area or even be able to be explained to still be good? The Rocky Horror Picture Show is in a category all by itself and yet has had spinoffs of sorts and on-stage revivals since its inception and shows no signs of slowing down. I’m not even sure how the introduction to such a movie should be fleshed out so take a jump to the left, a step to the right, put your hands on your hips and bring your knees in tight. We are about to take a time warp and see if The Rocky Horror Picture Show still stands the Test of Time.

Four years ago, as a global pandemic brought society both indoors and desperate for any means of suitable distraction, television veteran Bill Lawrence, having once breathed life into cultural touchstones “Spin City” and “Scrubs,” made the leap to the streaming landscape of Apple TV+ with “Ted Lasso.” Though “Lasso” presumably ended its run after three near-legendary seasons, Lawrence’s newest series, “Shrinking,” was only just emerging from the gates, a show now gifted with a second excursion into a world of therapists, stabs at personal growth and the sort of interpersonal dilemmas standard for any half-hour sitcom.

In nearly 30 years of creating or co-creating series from Spin City to Scrubs to Bad Monkey, Bill Lawrence has been one of TV’s most reliable sitcom showrunners. He has a great eye for talent in front of and behind the camera. He has a sharp sense of humor and an innate feeling for how to create a warm atmosphere that viewers will want to spend time in week after week, season after season. And he really, really knows how to course-correct.

Back in the early 1990s, when they were still in their early-to-mid 20s, Vince Vaughn and Bill Lawrence met at a low-stakes poker game hosted by a mutual friend in Los Angeles. Vaughn had yet to rise to fame alongside Jon Favreau in the buddy comedy film Swingers, and Lawrence, then a standup comedian, was still years away from co-creating Spin City, the ABC sitcom that starred Michael J. Fox (in his final role before disclosing his Parkinson’s diagnosis) as the astute deputy mayor of New York City.
Over the years, as their paths continued to cross at social events, Vaughn and Lawrence would keep tabs on each other’s progress. Vaughn became one of the most bankable stars of R-rated comedies in the late ’90s and 2000s, headlining box-office hits such as Wedding Crashers, Old School and Dodgeball. Brett Goldstein, who co-created Shrinking alongside Jason Segel and Bill Lawrence, is headed to the screen this season, thanks to the urging of Segel.
Season two of the Apple TV+ comedy — following grieving therapist Jimmy (Segel) as he breaks the rules and tells his clients exactly what he thinks — sees Goldstein joining the cast in a surprisingly dark role; Lawrence admitted he initially shot down the Ted Lasso star for the part, until Segel changed his mind.
“I made a mistake that I think audience members make sometimes when you equate somebody to a part they played. This needed to be an empathetic, sweetheart of a guy and in my head I’m like, ‘No, Brett’s more like [Ted Lasso character] Roy Kent.’ And then I’m like, ‘What am I talking about? He’s such a sweetie and he’s so lovely as a person,'” Lawrence told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s L.

Considering the overwhelming majority of people I know have an iPhone, it will never make sense to me how often I have to practically beg the folks I know to accept and embrace the fact Apple TV+ is home to some of the best original shows currently streaming. "Ted Lasso" and "Severance" managed to break through and become huge hits with audiences after going viral, but it seems like everything else is following the classic television model — finding its audience a season or two in thanks to overwhelmingly positive word of mouth. Thankfully, Apple is wise enough not to hit the panic button after one season, so now everyone who was late to the party with shows like "Shrinking" can immediately join the fun when season 2 arrives.

Since it first hit theaters in 1975, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" has been a spooky season mainstay and a staple for late-night moviegoers. Based on the stage musical of the same name — which came out two years prior — the cult classic introduces a young couple, Janet Weiss and Brad Majors (Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick), whose car breaks down near a mysterious mansion; when they call on the house to ask for help, they're met by a fascinating cast of characters, to say the absolute least.
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is referred to as a "cult classic" for a reason; as Roger Ebert once put it, "it was ignored by pretty much everyone" when it originally came out. These days, pretty much every major city offers midnight viewings of the movie, inviting audiences to dress up, throw things at the screen, and participate while the movie screens. So what...

The Friends TV show was perhaps NBC’s one of the most successful series, which went on from 1994 to 2004. The sitcom starred Hollywood’s finest actors as the main cast, but the guest roles also included some big names from the industry. Surprisingly a renowned movie star once freaked out while filming a guest appearance on the show.
Before he landed his role of Charlie Harper on the CBS sitcom, Two and a Half Men in 2003, the actor had a successful career in the movies. Charlie Sheen was well-versed in acting, but in front of a rolling camera, not a live audience. The difference was so huge that when he appeared for a cameo on Friends, he initially could not perform.

Two and a Half Men, with its witty and hilarious quips, quickly rose to the ranks of being one of the most popular sitcoms. The show mostly revolved around their relationship and banter, as well as Charlie Harper’s several love interests.

How Vince Vaughn and Bill Lawrence’s 25-Year Friendship Led to the Apple TV+ Cop Comedy ‘Bad Monkey’
Vince Vaughn first met Bill Lawrence more than 25 years ago, so when cop comedy “Bad Monkey” came around, the actor jumped at the opportunity to finally work together.
“We just laughed a lot,” Vaughn told Variety at the Apple TV+ show’s premiere on Monday night. About collaborating with the “Spin City” and “Ted Lasso” hitmaker, Vaughn added: “He’s got such good ideas. He welcomes ideas. It was easy.”
It’s hardly a surprise things worked out so well, since Lawrence has made a bit of a habit of working with friends and family. At this stage in his career, “it’s just so fun to work with the people you want to spend time with,” he said, as his daughter, singer-songwriter Charlotte Lawrence, walked past him on the sand-colored carpet outside the Hammer Museum in Westwood.
Lawrence was initially apprehensive about casting her in the show, though he knew she had the chops.

Jennifer Esposito is recalling how “a Harvey Weinstein-esque type person” tried to end her early acting career.
The Blue Bloods actress detailed on a recent episode of the She Pivots podcast the impact this “notorious, brutal” producer, whom she did not name, had on her.
“He fired me for no reason,” she said of a past project. “He wanted someone else and he got her.” However, it didn’t stop there. Esposito claimed the producer attempted to keep her from getting any additional work in Hollywood.

Exclusive: Jordan Weiss and Michelle Nader, collaborators on Hulu’s Dollface, have sold a romantic comedy pitch to New Line Cinema, sources tell Deadline.
Set against the backdrop of the NFL playoffs, the as-yet-untitled film will watch as two veteran “players” in the game of love, who typically date younger, find their match when they meet each other.
Weiss and Nader come to the project following two seasons on the LuckyChap-produced Dollface, starring Kat Dennings, Brenda Song, Shay Mitchell and Esther Povitsky, which Weiss created, and for which Nader served as executive producer.
The deal further deepens Weiss’ relationship with New Line, which is releasing her directorial debut Sweethearts on Max this fall. Weiss also co-wrote and executive produced that film, which stars Kiernan Shipka, Jake Bongiovi and Charlie Hall. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s memorable — a supporting character in a TV series breaks out to such a degree that he changes the entire direction of the series. Fonzie on “Happy Days” is one example; “J.J.” on “Good Times” another. But few have had the cultural impact of cocky conservative teen Alex P. Keaton whose dynamism completely upended the direction of the 1980s NBC sitcom “Family Ties.” Designed as a “hip parents/square kids” show with an emphasis on the parents, Alex wound up becoming the character who popped with audiences, largely thanks to sharp writing by series creator Gary David Goldberg and the comic skill of young Canadian actor Michael J. Fox. Critics, audiences and the Television Academy responded strongly to Fox’s work, rewarding the actor with five Emmy nominations for the role in the 1980s, including three consecutive wins as Best Comedy Actor.

Michael J. Fox is sharing his thoughts on how Hollywood has changed over the decades.

He added, “We were tougher. We didn’t have social media, we didn’t have any of that crap. We were just famous. Left to our own resources. And it was an amazing time.”

Comedies have always been Richard Kind‘s bread and butter. With memorable roles in shows like Spin City, Mad About You, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Other Two, and now the Night Court reboot, the 67-year-old star has long been one of the industry’s best character actors. But he tells TV Insider that he craves his chance at a dramatic turn like his Spin City co-star/longtime friend Alan Ruck, who showed his dramatic chops in the incomparable HBO series Succession. After being “raised” on the original Night Court and long admiring John Larroquette‘s performance as Dan Fielding, Kind made his Night Court debut in Season 2 Episode 7 on Tuesday, February 13 on NBC. He plays Sy Feldman, a disgraced Broadway producer who’s in legal trouble over faulty investments in his failed shows. The character is a lot like Max Bialystok of The Producers, whom Kind played on Broadway in 2004 opposite Ruck as Leo Bloom.

The veteran actor has logged memorable guest appearances on dozens of TV comedies over the years, along with regular stints on Mad About You and Spin City, among others. So it’s no surprise that Kind pops up on this Tuesday’s Night Court (NBC, 8/7c) as unscrupulous Broadway producer Sy, who lands in court after getting caught selling fake theater memorabilia. So did Kind base this character on any Broadway producers he may have worked with?

Jon Cryer has proved himself a marketable quantity in the network sitcom game, a success most recently reflected in his starring role on the new NBC and Peacock show “Extended Family.”
Cryer, in an interview on the “Wtf With Marc Maron” podcast, recalled a key effort that helped cement that status — his part on the hit Charlie Sheen-starring sitcom “Two and a Half Men.”
Cryer said he remembered how Sheen’s role came together and how CBS played a big part.
“CBS wanted Charlie Sheen on the air so badly, and you could sense that,” Cryer said. “Based on, he had done ‘Spin City’ for a couple of seasons, and everybody was like, ‘Wow, he’s really good.’ Cause he took over for Michael J. January 11, 1999, 25 years ago to the day, was Jon Stewart’s first night hosting The Daily Show.
The comedian took over from Craig Kilborn, who had hosted the Comedy Central show from July 21, 1996. Stewart’s first guest was Michael J. Fox, promoting Spin City.
The Daily Show with Jon Stewart went on to win the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series for ten consecutive years between 2003 and 2012, before losing to The Colbert Report, a show that he exec produced, for a couple of years, and then coming back to win in 2015 in his final season.
It’s a run that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver looked like it might replicate with seven wins in the category – then known as Outstanding Variety Talk Series – starting in 2016.
However, Oliver is now competing on Monday night at the primetime Emmys in a new category, Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, up against Saturday Night Live and A Black Lady Sketch Show,...
