When the first Mario Party debuted in 1998, it set out to carve its own niche among peers like Mario Kart 65, GoldenEye 007, and Super Smash Bros., games designed to showcase the Nintendo 64’s then-unique capacity as a four-player social event centerpiece. All of these games, to varying degrees, are designed around high variance, but Mario Party’s dice-rolling, minigame-competing virtual board game pushed chaos particularly to the fore—delighting younger players and infuriating game design purists.
In Mario Party, unpredictable events and luck-based outcomes can both set and overturn the results of hour-long games, and learning the nuances of various minigames and gimmick-specific game boards can give experienced players some semblance of an edge. In the end, though, you only have so much control over where the dice fall.
The design intent is clearly to even the playing field for newcomers, making one of these titles a more inviting social proposition...

Movies based on video games haven’t had the best track record, lest we forget the Street Fighter disaster of 1994. But that may be changing.
The recent Chris Pratt Insults Italian-Americans (aka The Super Mario Bros. Movie) made over a billion dollars at the global box office. And the HBO series The Last of Us, proved that video games could inspire critically-acclaimed dramatic works that in no way involve talking hedgehogs or raiding tombs.
So it’s no surprise that there are more video game movies coming down the pike. There’s a Legend of Zelda project in the works, and before that, we’ll be getting the vomitous CGI onslaught known as Minecraft. At least Jason Momoa’s stylist seemed to be having fun.

Now this trend is going to even stranger places, as evidenced by the announcement that Apple is developing a movie based on The Oregon Trail.

“Looks like downhill from here,” Mia Berrin quips at the top of Pom Pom Squad’s second album, Mirror Starts Moving Without Me. It’s an apt opening for a project steeped in hellish Alice in Wonderland imagery and named after the uncanny horror movie trope where a character’s reflection moves out of synch. On Mirror, Berrin, the band’s lead singer and songwriter, leans into this darker tone of the Lewis Carroll classic as she illustrates an identity crisis in overdrive.

Legendary Entertainment, the company behind the Dune and Godzilla franchises, said it has completed a buyout of Wanda Group’s remaining equity interest.
Legendary funded the buyout with cash on its balance sheet without outside financing. This means the company is now owned solely by management and funds managed by affiliates of Apollo, which bought a $760m minority stake in 2022.

Legendary Entertainment is making a big strategic move, buying out Dalian Wanda Group’s stake in the company.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary CEO Josh Grode framed the deal as being a “right place, right time” situation.
“Wanda was looking for some liquidity in some of its investments. And we are coming off a great first part of the year, we had a very strong 2023, so we have significant excess liquidity on our balance sheet,” Grode says. “After six months or so of talking about it, we were able to reach terms that we thought were good, and the transaction winds up being very accretive to both management and Apollo, which, after the transaction is over, we will own the business roughly equally.”

Legendary Entertainment has bought out Chinese multinational conglomerate Wanda Group’s remaining 60% equity interest in the studio known for the “Dune” and “Godzilla” franchises.
The transaction was funded entirely by Legendary using cash on its balance sheet. Legendary emphasized that it retains “significant excess liquidity” after the transaction to fund its current business and planned expansion. In 2023, the studio secured a five-year, $800 million credit facility led by J.P. Morgan.
“The purchase of Wanda’s remaining ownership interest is the next strategic step in Legendary’s long-range growth plan. With our outstanding creative team, headed by Mary Parent, developing, producing and marketing high-quality film and television and working with leading artists remains core to our expansion,” Legendary CEO Josh Grode said in a statement. “I want to thank and acknowledge Wanda, who has been an outstanding and supportive shareholder since 2016, and I congratulate them on this transaction.”

Legendary Entertainment has completed a buyout of Wanda Group’s remaining equity interest in a move CEO Josh Grode said ushers in a new era for the studio.
Financial terms weren’t disclosed but Legendary said it funded the transaction entirely from cash on its balance sheet for the deal led by Grode, without tapping partner Apollo Global. Legendary and Apollo now co-own the company and the board will be evenly split between management and the private equity giant that invested $760 million in Legendary in 2022.
Chinese conglomerate Wanda acquired the studio in 2016. “I think they were in a position where they needed some capital [and] the opportunity arose for us to buy Wanda’s interest at a valuation that would be very accretive to both management and Apollo. And so, as a result, we were able to get a transaction done,” Grode tells Deadline.

Legendary Entertainment, the producer of the “Dune” franchise, has bought out Dalian Wanda Group’s stake in the company. The pact leaves Legendary and Apollo Global Management in control. Terms of the sale, which Legendary financed itself via cash on its balance sheet, have not been disclosed. Legendary said it did not rely on outside financing for the transaction.
Dalian Wanda Group, a Chinese conglomerate, bought the entertainment company in 2016 for $3.5 billion. Apollo later bought a stake in Legendary in 2022 for $760 million.
Talks to buy out Wanda started roughly six months ago. In an interview, Josh Grode, the CEO of Legendary, said he couldn’t remember if the discussions originated with Legendary or Wanda, but said the deal will help the company when it comes to possible expansion.

Bandai Namco and Spike Chunsoft’s incredible work has made Dragon Ball Sparking Zero a resounding success among fans eagerly awaiting the return of Budokai Tenkaichi.
This game offers a large selection of characters and truly unbelievable graphic quality, thanks to the power of the Unreal Engine. This is why other popular anime or manga should also have the opportunity to receive a game of such high quality and budget as Sparking Zero.
Below are some anime and manga that could have a game with the quality of Dragon Ball Sparking Zero.
9. Chainsaw Man Chainsaw Man could benefit from a original and well-adapted game. Image via Pinterest.
This manga, created by Tatsuki Fujimoto, was very well received when it was finally adapted into an animated format.
If properly adapted, Chainsaw Man’s universe, despite lacking a protagonist with strong character development, can offer the possibility of an engaging and fascinating exploration experience.

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky…Core cast members from The Addams Family reunited at this past weekend’s Los Angeles Comic Con, more than 30 years since they first brought the gothic family to the big screen.
Gathering for the event was Christina Ricci (Wednesday), Anjelcia Huston (matriarch Morticia), Christopher Lloyd (Uncle Fester), Jimmy Workman (Pugsley), and Carel Struycken (butler Lurch). Of course, the Addams Family reunion was obviously missing the late Raul Julia, who brought a whole new energy to father Gomez. In fact, Gomez died less than one year after the release of 1993’s Addams Family Values, succumbing to a stroke after battling other illnesses. It would be his final film released during his life, with Street Fighter being posthumously released.
But Julia’s presence was still felt by his Addams family, with Anjelica Huston remembering him as “the perfect gentleman.

Until a few years ago, any video game adaptation felt like a bad investment for studios, as comic book properties were being adapted left and right, and everybody seemed to be keen on developing their own cinematic universe a la the MCU.
Jack Black in A Minecraft Movie || Legendary Pictures
However, come the success of films like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it has become the case that studios want to take chances with video game properties once more. Even on the small screen, there seems to be a lot of quality that is being put out, with shows like Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, or even Castlevania. While these shows and films have re-instated gamers’ willingness to trust Hollywood, A Minecraft Movie might just be on its way to hurting gamers once more.

Following the exit of the Philippou Brothers, Bad Trip director Kitao Sakurai is reportedly in place to bring Capcom’s beloved Street Fighter franchise to the big screen.
Round Two: Fight! It looks like the second attempt to get Legendary and Capcom’s Street Fighter revival off the ground with a director is up and running. Back in June of this year, we covered a report which stated that both companies were lining the project up for a 2026 release. The only problem? The film didn’t have a director. Well, it did have a director at one point, two of them in fact, but by the point that that 2026 date was revealed, they’d both departed.
The Philippou brothers – makers of 2022’s incredible Talk To Me – were originally slated to direct Street Fighter, a movie based on Capcom’s enduringly popular fighting videogame franchise featuring a colourful cast of martial artists from across the globe.

Over-the-top action, stylish and brash protagonists, compelling narratives, and intriguing antagonists. Capcom’s Devil May Cry franchise certainly has it all.
As a franchise that has been around since 2001 with multiple installments and an ill-fated remake from Ninja Theory under its belt, it may be time for Capcom to think about bringing it back in all its glory for the current generation of gaming hardware.
That rings especially true in the wake of the studio releasing an excellent remake of Dead Rising that has stayed true to the original while making meaningful changes that include a graphical overhaul among a few quality-of-life changes that have resonated well with its players.

Legendary and Capcom's planned Street Fighter reboot recently hit a major setback when Danny and Michael Philippou - who helmed Aussie horror hit Talk To Me - stepped away from the project, but a new director may have been found.
According to insider Daniel Richtman, Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip) has now signed on to helm the film.
Reports indicate that "scheduling is partly to blame" for the Philippou brothers' decision, as the studio was hoping to begin shooting the movie fairly soon, and the filmmakers had shifted their focus to what will now be their next project, Bring Her Back, which is currently shooting in Australia.
It's a shame that the Philippou brothers will no longer take the helm, as they sounded very enthusiastic about the film during a recent interview.

The God of War gaming franchise is one of those big franchises that is yet to receive a live-action adaptation or an animated series. Following on from the success of HBO’s The Last of Us and Netflix’s The Witcher, entertainment fans are seemingly in the era of good video game to TV adaptations.
Sure, fans have seen some not-so-good adaptations in the past, like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010), Street Fighter (1994), Alone in the Dark (2005) and so on. Sometimes you see a name attached to a project and you just say "How?" Frank Langella is one of those names when it comes to Star Trek. The man's been everywhere and done everything. Excelling as a theater actor, Langella spun out of the theater and started doing major budget films like the 1979 remake of Dracula, the 1998 cult classic Small Soldiers, and more modern films like Frost/Nixon.
He's also the first man to portray Skeletor on the big screen, so the man has range. Yet, for a short spell in 1993, Langella played the Bajoran politician, Jaro Essa. A key figure during the first half of the season. It was a big get for the show, as the man had already won a Tony, an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award. Not bad for a show that was airing on syndication.

For over half a decade, Capcom joined forces with Marvel to produce a series of fighting games that would influence the genre for years to come. Between 1994 and 2000, seven titles saw arcade halls, bringing fan favorite characters from both universes together for high-octane clashes. This collection preserves those seminal works, reuniting gamers with old friends.
The partnership began in 1994. Led by Street Fighter designer Pom G, X-Men: Children of the Atom brought the mutant brawlers to beating up bad guys in true Capcom style. It introduced air combos and flashy specials that thrilled comic fans. The next year, 1995’s Marvel Super Heroes took the Infinity Gauntlet story to the stage, adding dynamic power-ups to the action. Things got chaotic real fast with 13 characters duking it out.
1996’s X-Men vs. Street Fighter brought the crossover concept, letting Wolverine slash up against Ryu. A tag-team system boosted creativity as players tagged in allies.

The video game crossover genre has been around since the late 1980s and includes everything from Super Smash Bros. to Fortnite. Although this style of game development may feel somewhat modern, now that every studio seems to be jumping on the bandwagon, it can actually be traced back to 1988 with the release of Konami Wai Wai World.
Since then, crossover titles have become increasingly popular, with games like MultiVersus and Funko Fusion as modern examples of character collaboration. However, with the influx of these games in the past decade, one has to wonder if they have lost their appeal.

Classic game publisher Capcom plans to update some of its most beloved titles and release them on new consoles and computers. The company, known for hit fighting franchises like Street Fighter and Darkstalkers, wants more players to experience its retro games.
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto said at a recent tournament the developer listens to fan requests. “We have many fighting games from our past people really want us to re-release,” he noted.
Matsumoto explained preservation and accessibility motivate this effort. Gamers who missed the original releases could now play on current hardware. “We aim to make our history accessible to new audiences,” he said. This strategy may also set the stage for future projects building upon these franchises.
One game high on Capcom’s list is Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, famous for deep combat. When asked about a remaster, Matsumoto expressed excitement. He welcomes the chance for more players...

Video game films are a sore subject for the movie industry. It is generally accepted that of all the adaptations released in the last 30 years, the number of truly worthy ones can be counted on one hand.
Borderlands also turned out to be a disappointment – the movie has just been released and already has a crushing 6% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Hardcore fans, however, remember that the world of game adaptations has seen far worse examples than Borderlands.
1. BloodRayne, 2005
The notorious director Uwe Boll's example is a lesson for those who are afraid of making mistakes. After all, if you repeat the same mistake countless times, you can become the director of the movie BloodRayne.
The film has almost no connection with the plot of the game: Rayne, a vampire-human hybrid, is looking for her father to carry out a righteous judgment on him, and ordinary residents of Romania oppose her.

According to critics, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Jamie Lee Curtis couldn’t save Borderlands from being so bad that it’s even bad for a video game movie.
Ever since the genre first took off in the 1990s, movie adaptations of popular game franchises have long been the bane of serious film critics and a boon for giant studios in search of a summer box-office success. Though 1993’s Super Mario Bros., the first live-action video game adaptation in Hollywood history, failed on both a critical and commercial level, films such as Street Fighter (1994) and Mortal Kombat (1995) proved that a cheesy, over-the-top and poorly-acted video game movie could turn a respectable profit while simultaneously pissing off Roger Ebert so bad that he would soon declare war on video games themselves.

Following the success of their feature debut, the horror film Talk to Me, the directing duo of Danny and Michael Philippou signed on to make a new film adaptation of the Street Fighter video game franchise, started developing a Talk to Me sequel titled Talk 2 Me, and let it be known that they had already shot some sort of Talk to Me prequel (but it’s not clear if or when we’ll get to see that footage), had an action drama project they’d like to make, and also had a horror script called Bring Her Back that they wanted to get into production. They were so dedicated to getting Bring Her Back made that they dropped Street Fighter in favor of their horror movie, which started filming earlier this year. Now Michael Philippou has taken to social media to let his followers know that Bring Her Back...

Fighting games have a reputation of being extremely difficult, too mentally taxing, and mechanically prohibitive to newcomers. While fighters at their core are no more complex than other genres, many different fighting games have tried to become more welcoming to a wider audience, while working to keep the same depth that competitors at the highest level fall in love with. Riot Games’ upcoming fighter, 2Xko, is the latest attempt to balance these frustrations.
Formally known as Project L, 2Xko was announced back in October 2019 during Riot Games’ 10-year anniversary celebration.

The Snk vs. Capcom series has entertained us through many imaginative clashes over the years. Originating as a fun card game, it grew into epic fighting games pitting legendary characters against one another. Snk vs. Capcom 2 remains beloved for how seamlessly it blended both companies’ worlds.
Naturally, fans anticipated how Snk might interpret the crossover in their own developed entry. Svc Chaos had the potential for new surprises and unmatched combat scenarios. Yet upon its release, critics noted several shortcomings compared to Capcom’s polished entries.
While Svc Chaos paid tribute to classic brawlers with loyal renditions of characters, certain choices left audiences wanting. The roster leaned too heavily on Street Fighter standbys over diverse selections. Controls felt unoptimized for intense showdowns. Unbalanced secret characters disrupted the competitive spirit.

This past weekend was the annual Evo fighting game tournament in Las Vegas. Beginning in 1996, Evo is one of the premier events where players from across the world get to show off their skills in various fighting games such as Street Fighter, Tekken, Mortal Kombat, The King of Fighters, and Super Smash Bros.
Aside from the different tournaments, many developers of these games like to make announcements. Be it an upcoming online update, the reveal of a new character, or even a new game, we also get to hear from the developers themselves on some of their potential future plans.
One of those people was Shuhei Matsumoto, a producer at Capcom who is attached to the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom collection that was announced this past June and is set to release later this year. Since the collection’s announcement, fans have speculated what it could mean for a possible new game in the series.

As if Assassin’s Creed Shadows did not have its fair share of criticism already, another has been added to the list that could be a big issue. The upcoming samurai protagonist in the game, Yasuke, has been facing a fair amount of backlash on the grounds of forced diversity.
That topic is subjective, and what seems like pushing a narrative to some may seem like a non-issue to others. However, the recent reported misdeed from Ubisoft could be far more cut-and-dry, if proven true. Not only has the studio been accused of stealing art, it has done so from one of the most beloved anime in history!

It’s a no-brainer that the battle in the early 90s arcade fighting game scene was between Capcom’s Street Fighter II and Midway’s Mortal Kombat. Lost in the shuffle with the other fighting games vying for players’ attention was another Capcom fighter in Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors. The horror-centric fighter was able to ride the wave of Street Fighter II‘s popularity, but obviously never hit the same level of success as the two main heavyweights. Yet despite that, it’s still very much a beloved series for fans of Capcom’s fighters, and even influenced the Street Fighter series with some of its mechanics and art style.

Roughly 2 months ago, Ubisoft revealed the first cinematic of the fourteenth major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The trailer introduced fans to the game’s two protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe, and confirmed that the game is set in 16th-century Japan towards the end of the Sengoku period.
The game will be the first Assassin’s Creed game set in Japan but it seems like Ubisoft’s negligence will delay the game. Last month, a petition was filed to cancel the game since the depiction of a Japanese samurai is inaccurate and disrespects the Japanese culture.

Recently, it was announced that Capcom would be releasing yet another game collection, this time focusing on their arcade efforts with Marvel Comics. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics comes with a rocking Punisher beat ‘em up, as well as a series of six fighting games that have evolved over the course of six years.
