Whose house? That’s right, “Poppa’s House” is heading to TV screens, bringing you another comedy series led by the iconic Wayans family.
Between the “In Living Color,” the “Scary Movie” franchise and more, there’s no doubt that the Wayans family knows funny, which is why they’re tackling the sitcom arena once again with the father-son series. And instead of naming a character Junior, like in “My Wife and Kids,” Damon Wayans has enlisted his very own son and his namesake Damon Wayans Jr. to kick it with him as his co-lead
With both Damons on-camera and the Wayans — including Kim, Shawn and Michael Wayans — working the writers room, fans can anticipate a hilarious and family-oriented show for everyone of all ages.

Poppa’s House just got started, but the Wayans family already has big plans for the show’s future. New Girl and In Living Color reunions are coming up a February episode of Poppa’s House Season 1, and Damon Wayans Jr. reveals to TV Insider that his uncle, Marlon Wayans, could appear on the sitcom. The star also says that it may just be a matter of time before Tisha Campbell and Jennifer Freeman — Damon Wayans Sr.‘s costars in the early 2000s sitcom My Wife and Kids — join as guest stars. In fact, Wayans Jr. says the two visited the Poppa’s House set just a week before the sitcom’s first episode debuted. Poppa’s House premiered on Monday (October 21) on CBS. It stars Wayans Sr. as Poppa, a legendary talk radio host and happily divorced man who has his point of view challenged as he finds himself still parenting his adult son,...

On Friday, Oct. 19, Variety partnered with the Santa Fe International Film festival to celebrate its 10 Screenwriters to Watch. All 10 recipients gathered at Santa Fe’s Lensic Performing Arts Center for a lively conversation about their path to screenwriting and the work that earned them their place on Variety’s annual list of the most promising up-and-coming scribes in the entertainment industry.
The panel began with a conversation about the films that first made them want to be screenwriters — and in some cases, exposed them to the idea that writing for film and television was a job they could pursue. Among their responses, “Fancy Dance” co-screenwriter Miciana Alise named John Huston’s “Annie” (“Carol Burnett just takes up the whole screen”), while her partner Erica Tremblay remembered “The Last Emperor” making a lasting impression; Noah Pink (“Eden”) said “Jurassic Park;” Tory Kamen (“Eleanor the Great”) and Nora Garrett (“After the Hunt”) agreed that “Juno,...

When Damon Wayans Jr. was only about six years old, he had a memorable encounter with his dad’s In Living Color co-star Jim Carrey that sounds like it was lifted directly from a horror film. Some guys will go to any length for a laugh.
“There was one time we were coming home, at night coming home,” Wayans Jr. said on Sirius Xm’s The Spotlight With Jessica Shaw. “We were waiting for the gate to open, and Jim Carrey drops out of the tree onto the windshield of our car and slides down. His face is just smeared down. That’s why he was so funny ‘cause he was just wild.”
That’s why Carrey was so funny? A man drops out of a tree… onto your car’s windshield… in the dark of night? If that constitutes “hilarious” at the Wayans’ house, they must have a blast on Halloween.

Back before social media became irrationally obsessed with nepo babies, we used to accept that comedy could be a family business to at least some degree, and that if your TV show or movie featured one person named “Wayans” in the cast, there were probably 10 or 15 other people with that last name working behind the scenes in various capacities.
If you were raised on In Living Color, watching the Wayans torch get passed from Keenan Ivory Wayans to siblings Damon, Kim, Shawn, Marlon and their additional brothers, sisters, children, aunts, uncles and cousins over three decades has been the source of much amusement and a fair amount of talent.
Though the Damons Wayans, Jr. and Sr., have played father and son before on ABC’s beloved Happy Endings, the new CBS sitcom Poppa’s House is their most extended starring vehicle in this capacity. The series also features Kim as director-producer,...

Foxx would reemerge in the public eye in 2023 at the Critics Choice Awards, both seemingly in good spirits and in strong physical health. However, it was clear from his onstage speech that the illness he experienced took a physical toll on the actor.

Despite the fact that the characters on sitcoms are usually close friends or even family, there are frequently feuds behind-the-scenes that can make filming pretty difficult. Sometimes things get bad enough that people get fired, like when Dan Harmon was kicked off of "Community" because of a spat with star Chevy Chase, but usually everyone can work things out at least somewhat professionally.
Unfortunately, the classic 1992 sitcom "Martin" suffered from some serious offscreen drama that ultimately contributed to the show ending with season 5. The series starred Martin Lawrence as DJ and talk show host Martin Payne and was a hit for Fox, which was positioning itself as a channel with edgier programming than audiences could find on the mainstream networks. Today, everyone knows Marlon Wayans and his comedic family of brothers. Decades after they all got their big break on In Living Color, the actor dished on what finally led to his family leaving the show that essentially made them famous. So, what did he have to say?
Marlon Wayans Was One Of The Biggest Stars Of Comedy
Marlon Wayans still has an active career in the spotlight today, but, there’s no question that he reached his peak as a comedian and an actor from the late 90s to the early 2000s. It was during this period of time that Wayans starred in some of his biggest hits.
Some of Marlon Wayans’s most iconic roles include parts in White Chicks, alongside his brother, Shawn Wayans, Terry Crews, and more. There was also the spoof comedy/horror Scary Movie franchise, which resulted in several films in the early 2000s as well.

Created by Keenan Ivory Wayans, the sketch comedy series In Living Color was a smash when it first aired. It nabbed the Emmy in its category for its debut season, beating out the likes of SNL, David Letterman, and Tracy Ullman. But that would only last so long, as the key players behind the show—the Wayans Brothers—had a falling out with the network, ultimately leading to a short run.
As Marlon Wayans recounted on the Club Shay Shay podcast (via People), In Living Color found themselves being hoodwinked by Fox, who had put the show on the syndication market without making proper compensation for its creator. “I remember when we left In Living Color because Fox was syndicating the show and it was hurting Keenen’s pockets. Keenen was like, ‘Nah, you ain’t gonna do this to me. My family said, ‘F*ck this money.’ And we all left In Living Color.

With the exception of a few soap operas and public affairs programs, no TV show has been on the air longer than NBC’s Saturday Night Live, which will embark on its 50th season Sept. 28. And as we approach the 76th Emmys, which will take place just a few weeks before that, it is the most celebrated show in the history of that event. Indeed, SNL holds the records for most Emmy nominations with 341 (Game of Thrones is second with 159) and wins with 89 (GoT is second with 59). And Lorne Michaels, its creator and overseer for all but five of its seasons, holds the record for most Emmy noms for an individual with 106 (Sheila Nevins is second with 77) and has racked up the second most wins for an individual with 21 (behind only Nevins’ 31).

Ángel Salazar, who played Chi Chi in “Scarface,” died Aug. 11, his representative Roger Paul confirmed to Variety. He was 68.
Salazar played Tony Montana’s (Al Pacino) henchman in the 1983 cult classic, where he joins the drug lord in trying to reach the pinnacle of Miami’s cocaine scene. Chi Chi saves Tony in the famous chainsaw scene, where he’s almost killed by rival gang leader Hector (Al Israel).
Toward the end of the film, Chi Chi tries to fend off foe Alejandro Sosa’s (Paul Shenar) hit men to protect Tony, using a submachine gun to hold them back. Once he runs out of ammo, he bangs on Tony’s office door, begging to be let in before he’s killed by the attackers. He’s the last of Tony’s crew to be killed, leaving the kingpin all alone.

Punkie Johnson’s departure from Saturday Night Live this week is the latest evidence that, more often than not, stand-up comics have a hard time making the transition to sketch comedy. Bill Murray called it. “Nowadays there’s probably more stand-ups that end up on the show, sort of more individual guys, than there used to be,” he says in SNL oral history Live From New York. “They’re individually good, but they maybe don’t have that particular skill or training or as much experience in that area.”
“That area” is sketch comedy. That’s why so many of the show’s all-time great cast members — John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Phil Hartman, Chris Farley, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Kristin Wiig, Kenan Thompson and Bill Hader, to name a few — came to the show from a sketch comedy background, often trained at Second City or the Groundlings. In Murray’s view,...

With Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Deadpool & Wolverine being closer than ever to the theaters, entertainment outlets are dropping iconic anecdotes surrounding the film and its making. Similarly, one such exciting story caught our attention, that revolves around a particular song used in the Deadpool threequel.
Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool & Wolverine | Marvel Studios
Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and even filmmaker Shawn Levy had apparently poured a herculean effort into obtaining permission from Madonna to use her 1989 hit Like a Prayer. Well, the song’s inclusion in the film is a big deal, since it has only been used once before in a film- Drew Barrymore’s Never Been Kissed.
Securing the Rights to Like a Prayer Wasn’t an Easy Feat for Ryan Reynolds
During the post-production phase for Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and director Shawn Levy mutually agreed on one particular aspect.

Over the past few years, with the rise of the social-media marketing ecosystem, the word “authenticity” has been increasingly integrated into the pop culture consciousness. As used by brands in pitch meetings and slide decks, it’s an ineffable commodity possessed by a rarified few in the creator space who seem to start trends, rather than follow them. According to brands, it’s the reason why followers connect with certain influencers — not, as one would otherwise suspect, because of their predilection for posting bikini photos or selfies with rappers and NHL players.

Jamie Kellner, one of the most-influential broadcast television executives of the late 20th century who oversaw the development and launch of two upstart networks, died last Friday at the age of 77. The cause of death was attributed to cancer.
Kellner served as the first President and Chief Operating Officer at the Fox Broadcast Network in the mid-1980s, orchestrating the build-out of Fox’s programming slate and helping it secure distribution on over-the-air stations in key markets and cable platforms in hard-to-reach corners of the country.
Kellner helped champion programming like “In Living Color,” “Married…with Children,” “21 Jump Street” and “The Simpsons” and “Cops,” which help set the tone for American television across two decades. He left Fox for the WB Network in 1993, which operated as a joint venture between Warner Bros Television and Tribune Broadcasting.

Jamie Kellner, the charismatic and crafty executive who expanded the broadcast television landscape by helping hatch the Fox and WB networks in 1987 and 1995, respectively, had died. He was 77.
Kellner died Friday at his Montecito, California, home after a battle with cancer, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
While still riding high atop The WB, Kellner in March 2001 was given additional responsibilities overseeing TBS, TNT and CNN as chairman and CEO of Time Warner sister company Turner Broadcasting System. But he was at that for just two years, before he retired and served out the remainder of his contract back in Burbank.

Jim Carrey is one of the most prolific comic actors in Hollywood. The actor changed the way comedy stars were looked at in the industry by giving solid hits in the ‘90s with films such as Ace Venture: Pet Detective, The Mask, Liar Liar, and more. Though he has done great work in dramas such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, he is known for his comedic work the most.
