Once upon a time being a nerd was looked at as a negative, with depictions of them being scrawny losers with glasses and high pitched voices who loved comic books and wouldn’t know how to throw a baseball unless Captain America taught them how. But something happened. Geek culture became mainstream culture and the people who brought it to us were the ones who once felt so alienated by their seemingly uncool passions. Enter Joss Whedon who used his childhood isolations to craft some of the biggest cult hit TV shows and penned many groundbreaking screenplays – everything from sci-fi to horror to action adventure to animation to Shakespeare and some of the biggest superhero flicks ever. But behind closed doors there seemed to be a different tale, a story of a man so consumed with ego that he made everyone else tremble in terror around him. It would seem...

From “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood” showrunner Jason Katims comes another dynamic story adapted from Ann Napolitano’s best-selling novel. “Dear Edward” follows Edward Adler (Colin O’Brien), the lone survivor of a tragic plane crash, as he adjusts to living with his aunt Lacy (Taylor Schilling) and uncle John (Carter Hudson) after losing his parents and brother in the accident.
The show also splits between narratives of other friends and family members connected to the crash through lost loved ones. Dee Dee (Connie Britton) lost her husband Charles, who had a secret life in Los Angeles that she did not know about. Linda (Amy Forsyth) lost her husband Gary, and she is pregnant with his child. Adrianna (Anna Uzele) lost her grandmother, a prominent New York congresswoman and her boss. Kojo (Idris Debrand) comes to New York from Ghana to care for his niece Becks (Khloe Bruno) because his sister...

Thanks to nearly 100 episodes of “Nashville” and five seasons of “Friday Night Lights,” Connie Britton is often associated with the South. Few fans of ABC’s country-music drama will forget her crooning duet, “No One Will Ever Love You,” and fewer still will forget the fierce yet loving twang Tami Taylor put on every piece of advice she gave all those Texan school kids. When she was growing up, Britton did live in Virginia, which she’s said makes it easy for her to slip into the accent whenever she hears it. But she was born in Boston, Mass., lived in Maryland before moving one state down, and traveled back north when she went to Dartmouth College.
This truncated biographical travelogue is simply meant to prepare you, dear readers, for Britton’s work in “Dear Edward,” an Apple TV+ ensemble drama from “Friday Night Lights” and “Parenthood” showrunner Jason Katims.

The latest miniseries on Apple TV+, "Dear Edward," is the kind of interconnected "human interest" story that feels like it could have happened in real life - but did it? While "Dear Edward" isn't directly based on a true story, it does adapt a book that drew its inspiration from a real-life tragedy and the outpouring of interest that followed.
Is "Dear Edward" Based on a Book?
The TV series "Dear Edward" is an adaptation of a 2020 novel by Ann Napolitano. Following its release, the novel earned a slew of accolades, including a spot on the New York Times bestseller list, inclusion on several "best of 2020" lists and selections for national book clubs such as the "Read with Jenna" book club on the Today Show.
In February 2022, Apple Studios announced that they had optioned the series for a TV adaptation. Jason Katims, the creator of shows such as "Friday Night Lights" and "Parenthood,...

Television that makes you cry is something Jason Katims is well known for, and his latest on Apple TV+, “Dear Edward,” is no exception to this rule. Even if high school football is outside your interests or a tragedy on the scale of the plane crash only exists in your nightmares, Katims will zero in on the universal (and even mundane) aspects to a significant teary-eyed effect.

The in-person return of Sundance sparked joyous reunions on the ground in Utah this week, but it’s not all celebrations. The industry confronted a troubling milestone on Sunday in Park City: the 50-year anniversary of the historic Roe v. Wade decision that gave women the constitutional right to an abortion.
Last June, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down that decision, sending pro-choice supporters – including many powerbrokers in entertainment and media – scrambling into action. At an intimate gathering off Main Street, Planned Parenthood hosted its ninth annual Sex, Politics, Film & TV event, where group leaders implored Hollywood to help in the fight for reproductive rights.
Caren Spruch, Planned Parenthood’s national director of arts and entertainment engagement, co-hosted the event with director Nisha Ganatra.
In her remarks, Spruch said the cocktail part should’ve been toasting Roe’s birthday, but instead, “the Supreme Court took away our federal constitutional right to abortion.

Grab the tissues. Jason Katims‘ latest series Dear Edward is sure to be a tearjerker.
Apple TV+ released a trailer for the series on Wednesday, which gives a glimpse at the powerful story of 12-year-old Edward Adler, played by Colin O’Brien, who survives a devastating commercial plane crash that kills every other passenger on the flight, including his family. As Edward and a diverse ensemble of others affected by the tragedy try to make sense of life after the crash, unexpected friendships, romances and communities are formed.
To be fair, the series even made Katims shed a tear. During AppleTV+’s Television Critics Association panel on Wednesday, the Parenthood creator joked that he’d had to hold back tears in the editing room.

The man behind "Friday Night Lights" and "Parenthood" has already made us cry our weight in tears over high school football and complicated family relationships, and now he's back to do it again with a plane crash story. "Dear Edward" is coming to Apple TV+ next month, and the new first trailer for the show reveals it's set to be another tearjerker from Jason Katims — one that will also bring back "Friday Night Lights" alum Connie Britton. Britton stars alongside "Orange is the New Black" star Taylor Schilling, while the eponymous character is played by newcomer Colin O'Brien.
"Dear Edward" seems to be named for the copious amount of letters 12-year-old Edward receives after miraculously surviving a deadly plane crash. It's clear from the trailer that many other people didn't; Schilling's character lost her sister, Edward's mom, while Britton's lost her husband. This wouldn't be a drama without some drama,...

Barry’s Bff Cisco Ramon, played by original cast member Valdes, last was seen in The Flash‘s Season 7 finale, where he officiated the #WestAllen vow renewal. Over his decades-spanning career, Mike Myers has crafted some of comedy's most memorable characters. You might know him most fondly as the headbanging hero Wayne of "Wayne's World," whether on "Saturday Night Live" during his '89-'95 tenure or in the celebrated movie adaptations. Perhaps you recall how he dominated the late '90s as both villain and swinging protagonist in the spy-parodic "Austin Powers" movies, and the subsequent inability to walk down the street without hearing a poorly-feigned Dr. Evil impression. Maybe ogres are your bag, making Myers' turn as an unrefined Scottish mean green machine Shrek the zenith of his talents. Or perhaps the name is fairly new for emergent comedy fans, the product of stumbling upon the cult-centric laugh-fest "The Pentaverate" on Netflix. Myers' influence on comedy is well-established, but what influences the influencer?

Amazon doesn’t see a future for As We See It.
The retail giant/streamer has opted to cancel the coming-of-age comedy about three 20-something roommates on the autism spectrum after one season. Reps for Amazon declined to comment on the decision.
The series hailed from Friday Night Lights and Parenthood creator Jason Katims and explored a subject that’s close to his heart as his son — who also inspired a character on Parenthood — is autistic. Rick Glassman, Sue Ann Pien and Albert Rutecki, who are all on the spectrum, starred as the three central roommates, while Sosie Bacon played their aide. Joe Mantegna also starred.
Katims, who penned the pilot, served as showrunner and exec produced alongside his True Jack topper Jeni Mulein and Dana Stern. The half-hour comedic drama was based on the Israeli format On the Spectrum, created by Dana Idisis and Yuval Shafferman.

The Covid epidemic must be rough for sex addicts — something that lends at least a temporary tinge of nostalgia to “Lost Girls & Love Hotels,” whose promiscuous heroine seems unconcerned even about old-school Std risks. This adaptation of a 2010 semi-autobiographical novel by Canadian Catherine Hanrahan stars Alexandra Daddario as a North American expat in Japan, escaping murky demons via endless partying and anonymous sexual encounters.

News flash! Time passes!
When I was a child, I was mesmerized by the very concept of time. How was it discovered? Why are units of time, like minutes and hours and days, all measured in multiples of 6? What was there before time? Could time ever end? If so, what would replace it? Eventually, these thoughts made me throw up, and I would have to make myself think about other stuff.
But here’s the thing: Time happens. Whether you think about it or not.
I am reminded of this when I look at the list of contributors to Mine! A Comics Collection to Benefit Planned Parenthood. In addition to talents like Neil Gaiman and Jill Thompson, there are a bunch of people whom I know personally on the list but there are also a whole lot I don’t know.
For example, there’s Gabby Rivera. And Tee Franklin.

June (the big wedding month) is soooo three months ago, and February (home of That holiday) is nearly half a year away, but the new indie comedy for the first of September looks at romance and marriage. Now, this isn’t a sweet “rom-com” all about the bloom of “new love” and the rocky, but ultimately smooth road to the altar. No, this basically concerns three couples who have made that committment (one hasn’t got the certificate, but they’ve got a child), but they’ve hit a bump (actually one is moments from careening off the highway). You could say that the last tier of the wedding cake is in the fridge, the foil is frayed, and freezer burn is imminent. Though somehow there are still lots of laugh at this look at relationships whose title harkens back to the big event, I Do…Until I Don”T.

1991's City Slickers was an Oscar-winning comedy success. It was not without behind the scenes challenges...
Spoilers for City Slickers lie ahead.
Sandwiched between the two big tentpole blockbuster hits of summer 1991 was a genuine sleeper surprise. Whilst it had long been pre-ordained that the Arnold Schwarzenegger-headlined Terminator 2: Judgment Day would rule the summer season with the Kevin Costner-starring Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, what few saw coming was a film called City Slickers.
It came from the pen of Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, the comedy-writing team who scripted 1989’s brilliant Parenthood. They co-write the film with Billy Crystal (who didn’t receive credit), who also conceived the idea for the film. And as with most unlikely successes, it had a bit of a history to it.

What movie fan doesn't miss Rick Moranis? The star of such favorites as Ghostbusters, Spaceballs, Little Shop of Horrors, Parenthood, My Blue Heaven and the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise has been absent from the screen since the 1997 direct-to-video sequel Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. He was last heard in the 2006 direct-to-video animated movie Brother Bear 2. While he hasn't exactly been retired completely (he's been putting out music albums as recent as 2013), he has been laying low in the decades since his wife's death from breast cancer in 1991. He's claimed he's mostly just been picky. That was his reason for not participating in last year's Ghostbusters remake, which...

Rick Moranis was one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood playing roles that emulated goofy, lovable, sweet characters that you couldn’t help but love. Whether it was Ghostbusters, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Strange Brew or Parenthood, you’d be hard pressed to find a character in Moranis’s career that wasn’t 100% likeable. Unfortunately for Hollywood and all of us Moranis fans out there, Rick retired from acting. Moranis opened up about it and said (you can read the entire interview at Uproxx): “Stuff happens to people everyday, and they make adjustments to their lives for all kinds of reasons.

The appeal of Keanu Reeves – philosopher, lover, martial artist, musician, motorcycle enthusiast, movie star – is that he carries himself lightly, even in the movies that require him to turn from "cool breeze" (the Hawaiian translation of his first name, for those of you playing at home) to howling tempest. He's the type of guy who's had to deny being Buddhist, even though he's played the Buddha onscreen – because it's just widely assumed that he would swing that way religiously. ("I haven't take refuge in the dharma," he has assured us.

Alicia, who's long been secretly estranged from Peter, is unfazed by the news, viewing it simply as useful to his defense in a corruption trial, until she notices that the man who brought it to her — rival lawyer Louis Canning (Michael J. Fox) — seems disappointed by her lack of emotion. "Were you wanting me to cry, Mr. Canning?" she asks, before screwing her face up like Lucille Ball's and pretending to sob as she wails, "Oh my god, I thought my husband no longer cheated!" As Alicia's expression reverts to its familiar blankness, an impressed Canning admits, "God, I love you." "I know," Alicia replies. That moment was striking not only because it was one of the few genuinely entertaining moments in...
