There aren’t enough Native women on TV. But when they do get hired, they’re often playing cops.
“Not to take away from the performances of all these actresses, who I admire so much and are doing a beautiful job,” says Lily Gladstone, “but it’s almost the only role that we get to see.”
So it’s understandable that Gladstone had something of a checklist in hand when she first met with the producers of “Under the Bridge.” They were offering her the role of Cam Bentland, a police officer investigating the 1997 murder of Reena Virk (played by Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old child of Indian immigrants in Saanich Core, British Columbia.
Cam, a Native woman adopted by a family of white cops, was the invention of series creator Quinn Shephard. Though realistic, the character is fictional; but the homicide at the center of the project is not. Often in the true crime genre,...

After seeing its Martin Scorsese pic Killers of the Flower Moon, depicting the “Reign of Terror” in Osage territory, score 10 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Apple has announced new grants to the Sundance Institute Indigenous Program and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, in support of Indigenous storytelling and the preservation of Native American history.
The contributions come as part of Apple’s Empowering Creatives program, which supports organizations that help people in underinvested communities unlock their creative potential.
Both grant recipients are dedicated to amplifying the voices and experiences of Native and Indigenous peoples. With a focus on feature and episodic work, Sundance’s program offers labs, fellowships, screenings, and individual feedback sessions for storytellers from Native and Indigenous backgrounds. The National Museum of the American Indian works to educate the public about Native and Indigenous cultures at its locations in Washington, D.C., and New York City.

The 2024 Oscar nominations have been announced, and while there were plenty of snubs and surprises, some entries were unanimously expected to dominate across categories. Among them is Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon," which received 10 nominations in total, including Best Picture, Directing, Cinematography, Film Editing, and more. The outpouring of love for Scorsese's latest work is deserved, especially with Lily Gladstone earning a historic nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role, making her the first Native American woman to earn a nomination in that category (and the first Indigenous woman to win the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture).
Scorsese's brilliance as a filmmaker cannot be overstated for obvious reasons, and his Oscar nomination for Best Director was an inevitability, given how layered and scathing his depiction of the Reign of Terror was in a film that demands depth and nuance. This is...

When Lily Gladstone was growing up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in rural Montana, acting in plays was an escape from bullies, who targeted her for being “verbose and goofy.” The idea came from her father, a Native man of Piegan Blackfeet and Nez Perce heritage, whom she describes as “a bit of a wizard” and “had me convinced when I was younger that he was able to move clouds.”
“My dad saw early on when I was onstage that I just thrived,” Gladstone says. “When I was nine, it was the worst of it.

Apple Original Films today set the Martin Scorsese-directed Critics Choice and Golden Globe Award-nominated Killers of the Flower Moon to begin streaming globally on Apple TV+ on Friday, January 12.
This comes after a $156 million global box office performance on the film that stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, with a breakout turn from Lily Gladstone. Apple’s rollout of the film, starting with a Cannes premiere and then a full global theatrical release by Paramount, sets an intriguing template for big budget streamer films going forward. It hits the streaming service right in the awards season wheelhouse, and it is considered a frontrunner.
Killers of the Flower Moon has been honored as the Best Film of the Year by the National Board of Review, received 12 Critics Choice Award nominations and 7 Golden Globe Award nominations, as well as being named to the American Film Institute’s list of Motion Pictures of the Year.

Based on the nonfiction book by David Grann, “Killers of the Flower Moon” stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, a WWI vet who travels to Oklahoma to work for his wealthy uncle, William King Hale, played by Robert De Niro. It’s the early 1920s, and this part of Oklahoma sits on lots of oil, whose rights are owned by the Native American Osage and other tribes. They are prosperous, some even rich, and it’s here that Ernest meets Mollie (Lily Gladstone). They fall in love and marry, but the story’s undercurrent throbs with the mysterious death of so many Osage people and the white people assuming their oil rights.
Mollie’s sisters and mother die, and then Mollie herself gradually gets sicker. Is she being poisoned? Through a narrative rife with exploitation and death, the epic tale tracks the Reign of Terror, a string of murders within...

The end-of-the-year awards contenders naturally include several biographical films, usually, they’re intimate tales of triumph and tragedy, such as Nyad and the upcoming Maestro. This holiday offering has that crossed with another genre, namely that it’s also a big sweeping historical epic. Fitting, since its subject made a huge impact on the entire world two centuries ago. In the director’s chair is a filmmaker known for such big, broad sagas, though he’s done several smaller dramas. And he’s comfortable setting his films in the far distant past and the far distant future. Here he’s flexing his considerable skills as he reunites with a former acting collaborator to tell the spectacular story of Napoleon.

There’s a story Lily Gladstone likes to tell about a Blackfeet man and a flower.
“He pulled it from the ground and shook the dirt off. He exposed the root system,” she says. “And he said, ‘This is like a story. If this flower is a story, then all of these roots are the different versions. They twist around each other; they go off in opposite directions. But that’s what gives it its strength. That’s what makes it hard to uproot. That’s what keeps the story going.”
The man was speaking to 20th-century historian James Willard Schultz, who was struggling to make sense of the varying ways Blackfeet people had told him the same stories. In an oral tradition, Gladstone emphasizes, there’s no one way of seeing things; each person’s narrative is the truth.

One of the bigger surprises in Martin Scorsese’s historical epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” is the last-minute minute cameo by Scorsese himself. He speaks the final words of the movie, which we will not spoil here but to say that it is powerful, profound and the only way the movie could have ended is an understatement. In a press conference on Wedneday, Scorsese was asked about the cameo and what it meant to the rest of “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
Scorsese said that the moment (which he described as “Eric Roth’s version” of an actual radio show) was captured following completion of principal photography. It was filmed in New York “where the radio shows did take place.” In the sequence, Scorsese plays a member of a troupe retelling the “Reign of Terror” that befell the Osage Nation (and is the story that makes up most of...

Martin Scorsese’s star-studded crime epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” impressed in its box office debut, collecting $23 million from 3,628 North American theaters over the weekend.
Despite its second-place finish, it’s easily the best start of Scorsese career since 2010’s “Shutter Island” ($41 million debut), eclipsing the opening weekends of 2011’s “Hugo” ($11 million debut), 2013’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” ($18.3 million debut), 2016’s “Silence” ($7.1 million in its entire domestic run) and 2019’s “The Irishman” (which had a token theatrical release before landing on Netflix). Making a Western remains something of a rite of passage for New Hollywood directors. John Carpenter spent much of his career espousing the classic oaters directed by titans like John Ford and Howard Hawks -- a passion that would manifest itself in the central siege in "Assault on Precinct 13." Steven Spielberg has similarly talked on and off over the years about putting on a pair of spurs, although he has yet to commit on that front.
Martin Scorsese, on the other hand, has finally gone and made his own cowboy picture with "Killers of the Flower Moon," a big-screen adaptation of David Grann's 2017 non-fiction book about the "Reign of Terror" that resulted in the murders of numerous members of the Osage Nation after oil was found on their reservation. After earning rave reviews after its Cannes premiere, Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” is inching closer to its wide theatrical release.

Robert De Niro blasted Donald Trump as a “stupid” man during the Cannes Film Festival press conference for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” comparing the former president to the twisted power player he portrays in Martin Scorsese’s crime epic, which premiered on Saturday night.
De Niro admits he struggled to connect with William Hale, saying “I don’t understand a lot about my character,” he says. “Part of him is sincere. The other part, where he’s betraying [the Osage people], there’s a feeling of entitlement.” De Niro alluded to the resurgence of white supremacy. “We became a lot more aware [of that dichotomy] after George Floyd with systemic racism.”
“Killers of the Flower Moon,” one of the starriest movies to play at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, tells the story of the murders that took place in the early 1920s after major oil deposits were discovered on the Osage nation’s land.

The hot ticket at Cannes — Martin Scorsese’s three-and-a-half hour opus “Killers of the Flower Moon,” adapted by the director and Eric Roth from David Grann’s 2017 non-fiction bestseller — screened ahead of its Saturday festival premiere in New York and Los Angeles to give critics a head start on writing their reviews. It’s clear why Apple chose not to play the film in Competition: it’s earning a range of reactions.
Sumptuously produced, the $200-million western crime saga transports the viewer to ’20s Oklahoma, where vast oil fields have brought immense wealth to the Osage Nation. While Grann’s book focuses on the procedural aspects of solving the so-called Reign of Terror that led to dozens of mysterious Osage deaths, Scorsese and Roth create a three-hander centered on the uncle and nephew played by Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio (Scorsese regulars united for the first time with their...

Martin Scorsese may like to think of “Killers of the Flower Moon” as the Western that he always wanted to make, but this frequently spectacular American epic about the genocidal conspiracy that was visited upon the Osage Nation during the 1920s is more potent and self-possessed when it sticks a finger in one of the other genres that bubble up to the surface over the course of its three-and-a-half-hour runtime.
The first and most obvious of those is a gangster drama in the grand tradition of the director’s previous work. Just when it seemed like “The Irishman” might’ve been Scorsese’s final word on his signature genre, they’ve pulled him back in for another movie full of brutal killings, bitter voiceovers, and biting conclusions about the corruptive spirit of American capitalism. “Gimme Shelter” may not have made it into the final cut, but the chugging bass groove...

While Martin Scorsese brought about 20 minutes of footage of Gangs of New York to Cannes Film Festival in 2002, the last time he had an official selection there (not counting New York Stories and My Voyage to Italy) was 37 years ago with After Hours, for which he picked up the Best Director award. Now, after many rumors, he’s officially set to return to the festival where he also premiered Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Palme d’Or winner Taxi Driver, The Last Waltz, and The King of Comedy.

Forget “will they or won’t they?” In the PBS import Marie Antoinette, a tongue-in-rouged-cheek take on a period biography, the question is when will the diffident young Dauphin, later King Louis XVI, take his teenage Austrian bride, Marie Antoinette, to bed? Their relationship is shown to be shrug at first sight, but the gossipy 18th-century French court hangs on these political pawns’ every move. After all, as Marie’s mother the Empress Maria Theresa (Marthe Keller) impresses upon her before sending her away, “Your job is to deliver the heir.” Yeah, but first things first. For much of the stylized first season, written by The Favourite’s Deborah Davis and ending well before the fateful Reign of Terror, Louis (gawky Louis Cunningham) flees at the very sight of Marie (a splendidly saucy Emilia Schüle) in a sexual panic. She’s frustrated by his rejection, but he’s just sad and pitiful,...

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are teaming up once again for an adaptation of another book from David Grann, the author of “Killers of the Flower Moon” – this time teaming on a project called “The Wager.”
Apple Original Films has acquired the rights to the book, which will release next year, and like their collaboration on the upcoming “Flower Moon,” the project has DiCaprio attached to star and Scorsese to direct.
Grann’s book tells the true story of a British naval ship called the Wager from 1742 that crashed and washed up on the coast of Brazil, marooning 30 survivors for months before they managed to make it back to shores and safety. But the story takes a turn when a few months later, a different set of just three survivors arrived in Chile and told a different story, saying that the men were not hero survivors but mutineers, and that...

Paul Verhoeven has made a career out of pushing cinematic boundaries, particularly when it comes to depicting sex or violence on screen.
In films like “Basic Instinct” and “Showgirls,” he battled the ratings boards, while blockbusters like “Total Recall” and “Robocop” popularized R-rated action. All that changed in the aughts, as Hollywood abandoned those projects, sanded down the edges of commercial movies, and replaced ice-pick wielding serial killers with caped superheroes that appeal to a-all-four quadrants. But Verhoeven endured, turning his attention to European films such as “The Black Book” and “Elle” and earning the critical respect that often evaded him in the 1990s. He’s back in Cannes this year with “Benedetta,” the story of a lesbian affair between nuns in 17th century Italy. The film will be released in the U.S. by IFC Films.

The Tribeca Festival wrapped Sunday night, its last event a retrospective screening of Raging Bull with a video (pre-recorded) of Leonardo DiCaprio interviewing Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro about the iconic 1980 film. The director called it, “the culmination of everything I had desired it to be.”
“I didn’t care what happened to it, or if I made another movie,” Scorsese said. He did, including with De Niro. The duo has a 50-plus year collaboration running from Mean Streets and Taxi Driver in the 1970s to The Irishman for Netflix in 2019 and Apple’s Killers of the Flower Moon, currently in production.

Actor, producer and director Norman Lloyd, best known for his title role in Hitchcock’s “Saboteur” and as Dr. Daniel Auschlander on NBC’s “St. Elsewhere” and famously associated with Orson Welles’ Mercury Theater, died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 106.
His friend, producer Dean Hargrove, confirmed his death and said “His third act was really the best time of his life,” referring to the many historical Hollywood retrospectives and events Lloyd had participated in over the past few decades. Lloyd often said his secret to his long and mostly illness-free life was “avoiding disagreeable people,” Hargrove recounted.
Lloyd was hand-picked by Alfred Hitchcock to play the title character and villain in 1942’s “Saboteur,” and it was his character who tumbled to his death from the top of the Statue of Liberty in the pic’s iconic conclusion.

Today is finally the day. After production was postponed last year due to the pandemic, Martin Scorsese, cast, and crew have begun shooting Killers of the Flower Moon in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Film + Music Office and Apple Original Films made the announcement regarding the highly-anticipated film, based on David Grann’s broadly lauded best-selling novel, set in 1920s Oklahoma. With the screenplay credited to Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese, the film will depict the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.
“We are thrilled to finally start production on Killers of the Flower Moon in Oklahoma,” said Scorsese. “To be able to tell this story on the land where these events took place is incredibly important and critical to allowing us to portray an accurate depiction of the time and people. We’re grateful to Apple,...

Attention is a funny thing when it comes to the true crime genre. Sometimes paying too much attention to a serial killer’s sordid crimes can come across as tasteless and disrespectful to the victims. Not paying enough attention, however, can mean that an uncaptured serial criminal can continue to operate in darkness and anonymity. I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is the latest docuseries from HBO and will catalogue a case that falls into the latter category
I’ll Be Gone in the Dark’s six episodes will tell the story of the serial rapist and murderer known as the Golden State Killer a.k.a. East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker (Earons). The series is based on a book of the same name by true crime writer Michelle McNamara. The show comes from documentarian. Liz Garbus (Ghosts of Abu Ghraib).
Here is everything else we know about I’ll Be Gone in the Dark.
