The 2023 BET Awards honored the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with dozens of performances that played like a musical family reunion as pioneers of the genre blazed the stage during a hostless but party-filled show held during the writers strike.
The Sugarhill Gang, Big Daddy Kane, Mc Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Erick Sermon and Keith Murray performed Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, celebrating rap music and honoring its roots as well as its domination in pop culture.
Ja Rule, Red Man, E-40, Master P, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Styles P, T.I., Fabolous, Trick Daddy, Trina, Uncle Luke and Skillz hit the stage, helping the four-hour-show flow during the writers strike, which several presenters acknowledged before giving out awards, including Grammy-winning singer Muni Long.
“Let’s take a moment to acknowledge and stand in solidarity with the artists who make us laugh, cry and, most important, think — our Writers Guild of America family.

The last time Puff Daddy made a pure, uncut hip-hop album intended for car stereos instead of techno-fried dance floors was back in 2001 – before mixtapes like 50 Cent Is the Future made his big-budget rap albums unfashionable, and before YouTube made his big-budget music videos unnecessary. In those days, before he went by “Diddy,” he was the rap mogul who got Sting to sing about the Notorious B.I.G. on the MTV Video Music Awards, who got Jimmy Page to remake “Kashmir” for a Hollywood Godzilla reboot, whose videos had speedboats and Dennis Hopper.

Wu-Block, "Wu-Block" (E1)
Wu-Tang Clan and D-Block are two of the most respected groups within the hip-hop realm.
Now, some of the members from the clans have joined forces to produce an album under the name Wu-Block, spearheaded by rappers Ghostface Killah and Sheek Louch. Their collaborative effort results in a solid piece of work on the 16-track album, which also features Jadakiss, Method Man, Styles P, Raekwon and Inspectah Deck.
The self-titled album has a soulful vibe meshed with hardcore, metaphoric rhymes. That's certainly evident on the album's first track, "Crack Spot Stories," featuring Raekwon and Jadakiss, and "Guns for Life," with Styles P.
The album hits its peak on "Drivin' Round," featuring Erykah Badu, Masta Killa and Gza. It's a smooth track with each rapper offering a thoughtfully harsh perspective, detailing the state of his or her poverty-stricken neighborhood.
Other enjoyable tracks include "Been Robbed," "All in Together" and "Stella,...

50 Cent formed a bond with the legendary California rapper and collaborated on multiple tracks, but the man behind "In Da Club" might not have fully accepted Snoop Dogg's transformation into Snoop Lion just yet.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter promoting his upcoming film, Freelancers, 50 Cent questioned Snoop's transformation from dog to lion.
“It’s interesting,” 50 told THR. “Of course, there will be some people who connect to it and there will be some people that run from it – I don’t know how his little league team’s parents will feel about his new persona. But again, it’s a persona – these are the choices he’s created for himself creatively. And, you know, I think it will work.”
Snoop has three children and showcased his role as a rap daddy in the reality show, "Snoop Dogg's Father Hood."
50 admits that Snoop has the cred to back up his recent change.

Is Azealia Banks really saying goodbye to her rap career? Earlier this week, the Harlem native deleted her Twitter account and announced that she will now focus on being a 'vocalist' instead of a rapper. But just last week she told MTV News that her upcoming Fantasea mixtape would be heavy on hip-hop, with a major feature from Styles P.
Banks announced her resignation from rap via a new Tumblr account, writing, "No longer wishing to be a rapper. i never was. ... and as soon as i started paying attention to bullsh-- urban media, i started getting myself in trouble. From now on i'm a vocalist, and will not be associating myself with the 'rap game' ... or whatever the f--- that means.

The second episode of the second season of MTV's "RapFix Live" is guaranteed to be another amazing show thanks to special guest Styles P.
Last week, Philly rapper Freeway came through and chopped it up about his past, current and future endeavors. This week's invitee is a New York City hip-hop veteran who also has plenty of news to share. Styles P, a.k.a. the Ghost, is a member of the Lox (with partners Sheek Louch and Jadakiss) but he has enjoyed a successful solo career too.
After dropping a couple of official mixtapes last year (as well as authoring a book titled "Invincible"), the Yonkers Mc is preparing to release his fourth proper solo album, Master of Ceremonies, on October 4. Recently,...

When the Throne's "Otis" premiered on New York radio in late July, rap fans weren't the only ones who took notice. MCs like the Lox's Jadakiss and Styles P wanted in on a piece of the action as well, so they sought out the Otis Redding-sampling instrumental. Only problem is, with all the secrecy that surrounded the recording and subsequent release of Watch the Throne and its singles, most knew that 'Ye was keeping the beat he produced very close. Luckily for the Yonkers, New York, wordsmiths, their friend DJ Statik Selektah is a wizard on the beat machine.

Kanye West has largely shunned the spotlight since his stage-crashing rant at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards in September. Save for a few appearances — joining Beyoncé onstage at a London concert and joining a host of celebrities for the "We Are the World" remake — West has, for the most part, spoken only intermittently through blog posts and a guest turn on Fox's animated series"The Cleveland Show."
Last week, however, West popped up at Manhattan hot spot CV with entourage in tow -- Plain Pat, Consequence, Kid Cudi -- for a rare public appearance since he first vowed to take time off following his Vma stunt. (West admitted at the time in a televised interview with Jay Leno...

"Every Saturday 'Rap Attack,' Mr. Magic, Marley Marl ..." — Notorious B.I.G., "Juicy"
Biggie immortalized him in rhyme, but by the time the Brooklyn Mc name-checked Mr. Magic on 1994's Ready to Die, the DJ was already a living legend. It was confirmed today that Mr. Magic passed away after suffering a heart attack. (At press time it was unknown how old he was.)
Magic, born John Rivas, was a pioneer in hip-hop and made his mark as the first DJ to host a mixshow hour on commercial radio, which was revolutionary in the early 1980s but as common as a rap CD with a "Parental Advisory" sticker on it today. Back in 1982 when Mr. Magic, along with Marley Marl as his DJ and Tyrone "Fly Ty" Williams as co-producer, kick-started "Rap Attack," the program's launch was arguably as significant to music history as when the Moonman planted...

"They ain't gonna make me go on before the people get there this year," Jada recently told us. "That's in the negotiations. 'Don't even call me if y'all ain't trying to let me go on at a reasonable slot, man.' "
Jadakiss revealed the obvious: that he's going to bring out a few cameo appearances.
