"Tide's coming in..." Gravitas has revealed an official trailer for an indie drama titled The Way We Speak, marking the feature directorial debut of indie filmmaker Ian Ebright. It premiered at the 2024 Florida Film Festival a few months ago, also screening at the RiverRun and Julien Dubuque Film Festivals. The Way We Speak is a modern cautionary tale. The synopsis is rather vague: An up-and-coming writer refuses to leave the spotlight when his best friend and debate opponent suffers cardiac arrest, leading to an obsession over his new opponent. Described in reviews as "a rich character study that centers around obsession, insecurity, and jealousy." Patrick Fabian stars as Simon, along with Diana Coconubo, Kailey Rhodes, Ayanna Berkshire, Lowell Deo, Ricco Distefano, and Reed Diamond. This very moody, nearly dialogue-free trailer is a clever cover-up for the film's religious undercurrents - it's about how an atheist becomes insecure about his young,...

Since making its debut at last year’s Fantasia Film Festival, New Life has garnered a lot of attention for its first-time writer/director John Rosman and his potentially apocalyptic chase film. I missed it during its festival run, but on the eve of its American release, I got my chance to rectify that and see if it lived up to its hype.
It starts like a conventional thriller, with a bloodied woman slipping through the streets of what looks like a typical American suburb, trying to avoid being seen. She lets herself into her house and cleans herself up. She barely managed to wash and change before she sees armed men in her kitchen. She lets herself out a window and, since they apparently never learned about guarding a perimeter,...

Two years have gone by since we heard that Sonya Walger (For All Mankind) had signed on to star in the cat and mouse horror thriller New Life with Hayley Erin of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, and Tony Amendola – who was in both the Conjuring Universe film Annabelle and the Conjuring Universe adjacent The Curse of La Llorona. It’s been seven months since JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols got to check the movie out at the Fantasia film festival, resulting in a 7/10 review you can read Here. But we only have one more month to wait until a wider audience is going to have the chance to see New Life. Brainstorm Media will be giving the film a VOD and limited theatrical release on May 3rd, and in anticipation of that release a full trailer has arrived online. You can watch it in the embed above.

We included the teaser trailer in that review, but just in case you overlooked it, this seemed like a good time to put a spotlight on it, since New Life is now set to screen at FrightFest in London in just a week and a half, on Friday, August 25th.

Exclusive: Following six seasons as Howard Hamlin on AMC’s megahit Better Call Saul, Patrick Fabian has signed on to lead the indie The Way We Speak from writer-director Ian Ebright (From the Sky).
Billed as an allegory about America’s fractured politics and culture, the film follows Simon (Fabian), an up-and-coming commentator whose world is turned upside down when his best friend and debate opponent suffers a fatal heart attack. Simon refuses to leave the spotlight at an annual thought-leader summit, leading to an obsession with his new opponent and a growing rift with his ailing wife, Claire (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’s Diana Coconubo).
Ebright’s Broken Telegraph is producing the pic, also to star Kailey Rhodes (Black Pool), Ayanna Berkshire (Twilight) and Lowell Deo (Z Nation). Fabian is repped by The Kohner Agency and Essential Talent Management.

"We didn't need to be rescued." Bleecker Street has released the first trailer for Leave No Trace, the new film from Debra Granik (Winter's Bone), which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to some rave reviews. Leave No Trace is a story about a father and daughter, living off the grid entirely in the forests of Portland, Oregon. It's a bit similar to Captain Fantastic from a few years ago, but a much more intimate and personal story of this father and his daughter. Ben Foster stars along with newcomer Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie, who is indeed a revelation. The full cast also includes Jeff Kober, Dale Dickey, Isaiah Stone, Dana Millican, and Ayanna Berkshire. This is also heading to the Cannes Film Festival next, and is one of the better films coming out of Sundance this year. Make sure it's on your radar. Here's the first...

Coming off the heels of many great film festivals in the Tampa Bay area, Sunscreen Film Festival looks to top them all. The 5th annual film festival in St. Petersburg, kicks off tonight at The Baywalk Muvico 20 and runs all the way through Sunday the 18th. Hollywood stars and tons of independent filmmakers will be bringing their feature and short films to the masses. Over 100 films are expected to be screened over the next five days.
Believe it or not, film festivals do not solely revolve around seeing flicks from all over the world. Numerous workshops and panels end up being the most sought out attraction at many of these events. Hollywood actors, producers, writers, all show up to address aspiring filmmakers about their experience in the business. Chicago – A very subdued and scientific Harrison Ford recently spoke with HollywoodChicago.com and two other Chicago film critics on the subject of his new true-story film “Extraordinary Measures”. Ford stars in the film and served as its executive producer since inception.
At one point in our interview, the 67-year-old Chicago native calmly uttered a minor expletive and then reminded us that we have the choice about whether or not to print it. While the interview style of some actors can fall into the more eccentric bucket, the Ford experience on this day was decidedly professional, conservative and relatively serious.

Twilight Novel Novice, a Portland-based fansite, was on-hand to speak to the actors - Ayanna Berkshire ("Cora" in Twilight) and Catherine Grimme ("Young Bella"). Turns out Carlise Cullen isn't the only vampire with a compassionate streak. This 4th of July, in a benefit for the Make-a-Wish foundation of Oregon, some of the Twilight and New Moon cast members are taking part in a day of Vampire Baseball.
The Portland event starts with a fans game in the morning. Some of the winners from that game will then face off with cast in the afternoon, playing a game in front of stands filled with Twilighters. A percentage of ticket sales from the event benefit the charity that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions.
If you can't make it to the event — scheduled to have Rachelle Lefevre, Peter Facinelli, Edi Gathegi, Michael Welch, Solomon Trimble, Christian Serratos, Ayanna Berkshire, Catherine Grimme, Alex Meraz, and Kiowa Gordon at bat — don't worry. We're going to be there to report on it and will have footage to share in coming weeks.
