In Ripley, Netflix’s dazzling eight-part adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s landmark 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, the approach to the material is more emotionally cold and deliberately paced than in the 1999 movie adaptation. Anchored by a bravura performance by Andrew Scott, the series — nominated for 13 Emmys — was written and directed by veteran screenwriter Steven Zaillian (Oscar winner for Schindler’s List). Zaillian joins THR for a conversation about this ambitious project’s journey to the small screen.
What inspired you to remake something that had already been tackled to great success by Hollywood?
Twenty years had gone by since the 1999 movie. I felt that there was a way of doing this in a longer format that would hopefully capture the feeling that I had when I first read the book.
Was there an essence to the book that you felt had not been captured in the film?

Casting director Avy Kaufman admits even she was skeptical when Steven Zaillian asked her to come on board to cast “Ripley,” the Netflix limited series based on Patricia Highsmith’s classic novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” The story had already been adapted to screen, most notably in Anthony Minghella’s Oscar-nominated 1999 film.
“At first, I was wondering why Steve was doing this,” Kaufman says bluntly. “I’ve been lucky enough to work with him on many other projects, so I know how talented he is, but to reboot is really risky.” But the final product, which boasts 13 Emmy nominations, including a nod for casting, quelled any doubts. “It’s like a piece of art,” Kaufman raves. “I was really impressed. It tells so many different stories and gets inside the characters. I just think it’s a masterpiece.”

Tom Ripley is a master of reinvention, but his considerable skills can only take him so far. At the end of Ripley, the walls are closing in onAndrew Scott’s dapper con artist, and Italian police are desperately tracking the man they suspect of murdering two people — Freddie Miles (Eliot Sumner) and Ripley himself. This gives Ripley, who’s been posing as Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn), the perfect escape hatch. Because it’s Dickie the police suspect of murder — and Dickie whose identity (and bank account) Ripley has been using — Ripley can return to a safe harbor: his own name and passport.
“People have a lot of preconceptions about Tom Ripley,” Emmy nominee Scott told Netflix of the infamous antihero created by Patricia Highsmith in her 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. “So it’s my job, I suppose in some ways, to ignore all that and try to create our...

During Steven Zaillian’s Ripley, the viewer gleans a lot from things that aren’t said, whether that’s through telltale props, intricate sets or fabulous 1960s fashion. But it’s the show’s sound mixing that really becomes a key player in the Netflix series, adding tension and mystery to scenes with little dialogue or score.
“Steve clearly planned the show with sound in mind and really left room for the environments and ambiences to breathe and support a tone,” says sound designer and rerecording mixer Larry Zipf. “We had many long stretches with little dialogue or little music, and wherever there was opportunity for sound to give the impression of life outside the frame, whether it’s diegetic or in Tom’s mind, Steve was always looking for that.”

In 2018, when Steven Zaillian began writing a first draft of Ripley — his TV adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley — one item in his office made its way into his screenplay: the heavy crystal ashtray that (spoiler alert) kills Freddie Miles in the fifth episode.
But Zaillian’s foray into the story of con man Tom Ripley started long before 2018. Ten years ago, a unique proposal popped up on his radar — a TV series. “If it had been proposed as another movie, I would’ve said no,” he tells THR, “but as an eight-hour series, I thought, ‘This could be interesting.’ ”
For starters, he wanted the limited series — about a grifter, Tom Ripley, who covets, and then kills for, the lifestyle of his wealthy former classmate Dickie Greenleaf — to be in black and white. “When I first read the book, it’s how I felt it should look.

In Netflix’s Ripley — Steven Zaillian’s foray into the world of con man Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley — Eliot Sumner’s Freddie Miles is English. Considering that in both the book and previous 1999 movie, the character is very American, the singer-actor took a risk with the audition.
“I got sent the audition in February 2021, and this was still pandemic time, so I’d been doing a lot of tapes but not getting much work, and this one comes up and I couldn’t really believe it,” says Sumner, whose parents are Sting and actress Trudie Styler. “I thought that I definitely wouldn’t get it. I did it the way that I heard it in my head, and I risked it all by playing Freddie as an English person. Intuitively, I thought it might add some contrast to the rest of the characters.

When we meet Tom Ripley at the start of Steve Zallian’s eight part adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s celebrated novel The Talented Mr Ripley, he’s not the fresh faced chancer of Matt Damon’s Ripley in Anthony Minghella’s 1999 version. Andrew Scott’s Ripley is a grifter in his 40s, a jaded low-level fraudster living in New York. He’s not even especially talented – or not at this point anyway.
An encounter with shipping magnate Herbert Greenleaf sees Ripley heading to Italy on Greenleaf’s dime to lure back his errant son Dickie (Johnny Flynn) who is living in the idyllic city of Atrani on the Amalfi coast. Here Dickie paints, hangs out on his yacht, flirts with the locals and lives in a beautiful home with his girlfriend Marge (Dakota Fanning). Ripley insinuates himself into Dickie’s life but soon grows obsessed, not just with the lifestyle but with Dickie himself.

The novel by Highsmith was adapted once before into a film written and directed by Anthony Minghella, and it starred Matt Damon as the titular character. Ripley stars Andrew Scott in the lead role with Dakota Fanning, Johnny Flynn, Eliot Sumner, and Maurizio Lombardi starring in supporting roles. [Editor’s note: The below article contains spoilers for “Ripley.”]
Tom Ripley is an aesthete — but America’s favorite fictional sociopath doesn’t initially start out as one in Steve Zaillian’s eight-episode adaptation of “The Talented Mr. Ripley.” The Tom in Patricia Highsmith’s novel, however, had an almost moral repugnance for anything second-rate or unpleasing from the start; he never would have chosen the purple paisley dressing gown Ripley is so pleased by early in the Netflix series.
But Andrew Scott’s Ripley is a fast learner once he arrives in Italy to convince Dickie Greenleaf to return to NYC — Dickie’s fat fountain pen doesn’t stand a chance once Tom eyes it — and he quickly picks up a taste for what the kids now call “quiet luxury.” “In the novel, Tom is immediately drawn to Dickie’s ring,” Giovanni Casalnuovo (who designed the costumes alongside Maurizio Millenotti) told IndieWire. “It’s more than just an accessory.

Filmed in black-and-white, Steven Zaillian’s Ripleyvividly renders the world of novelist Patricia Highsmith’s masterwork in stunning contrasts. But Eliot Sumner has always been more captivated by the enigmatic grifter’s shades of gray. Over the titular character’s many iterations across page and screen, Sumner says it’s the “thematic combinations of envy, obsession, and fantasy” that have kept audiences — including him — returning to Tom Ripley time and again. “There’s something innately human about him,” Sumner tells Tudum. “From his perspective, the world around him is out of reach, so he has to steal it. And I don’t think that I’m alone when I say in a strange way you are rooting for him to get away with it.”

When I saw the first black-and-white still of Andrew Scott in and as “Ripley,” I was sold — and I know I’m not alone.
The 47-year-old actor might seem like an unexpected choice to step into the shoes of Tom Ripley, but for anyone following his career, it could not have been a more perfect casting or welcome treat. From the very first moments, Steve Zaillian’s “Ripley” is one of those projects that hinges entirely upon its lead actor, a vehicle for Mr. Ripley’s talents that buoys sharp direction, artistic choices, and lush cinematography in its wake.
As for casting the man last seen on TV as Hot Priest in the role of a known sociopath (though Scott and Zaillian dislike labeling their antihero), we must turn to Tumblr. With Instagram in its infancy and TikTok still years away, Twitter and Tumblr were the arenas for Andrew Scott...

Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley, is a watershed thriller for its critique of class, its queer undertones, and its enduring legacy. The novel inspired multiple sequels, as well as several film adaptations, the most significant of which was Anthony Minghella’s Oscar nominated 1999 film of the same name.
Showtime commissioned a series based on the original book from writer/director Steve Zaillian back in 2021, but the project eventually went to Netflix. Now the eight episode limited series is out in full, and the new iteration is more sumptuous, more faithful to the source material, and more queer (from a contemporary perspective) than any other iteration.

Remaking established properties under a new vision is common in Hollywood. However, seeing a beloved modern classic get that treatment so quickly has become a problem for many stories. Despite The Talented Mr. Ripley only reaching its 25th anniversary this year, Steve Zaillian adapts Patricia Highsmith’s novel once again. Netflix’s new series, simply titled Ripley, follows the plot of the novel in more detail. Gone are the sun-soaked villas of Italy in favor of sterilized black-and-white photography. The slow and methodical series dips into the exacting and careful actions of a psychopath. Andrew Scott’s Tom is not fun. Instead, he’s a calculating murderer and destroyer. The result is a very different, but rewarding take on the iconic character.

Twenty-five years after Anthony Minghella’s The Talented Mr. Ripley comes a slower, moodier adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel. Netflix’s eight-part series, written and directed by Steven Zaillian and shot in stark black and white, stars Andrew Scott as the titular career criminal who, funded by wealthy shipping businessman Herbert Greenleaf (Kenneth Lonergan), travels to southern Italy to bring Greenleaf’s son, Dickie (Johnny Flynn), back to New York.
After arriving in the incredibly picturesque town of Atrani, where he finds Dickie living the high life with his girlfriend, Marge Sherwood (Dakota Fanning), Ripley quickly changes tack. He wins Dickie’s trust and embeds himself firmly in his life, but in the process rouses the suspicion of both Marge and Dickie’s friend Freddie Miles (Eliot Sumner).

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

For those of us who religiously watch “Sex and the City” on whatever platform it is currently streaming on (hi), April 1 is an exciting day. That’s the day the popular HBO series starring Sarah Jessica Parker is coming to Netflix — for the very first time. And TBS reruns this is not: This is the full, unedited, groundbreaking show, now just waiting for viewers new and old to do a Netflix binge. (Paging Gen Z!)
Of course, there are plenty of other exciting TV shows and movies hitting Netflix in April 2024. Movie thrills include Jessica Chastain-starring “Molly’s Game” making its way back to the streamer, as well as perennial rom-com fave “You’ve Got Mail.” On the TV side, there’s new series “Dead Boy Detectives,” from showrunner Steve Yockey, and from the same universe as “The Sandman,” based on the beloved comic series from Neil Gaiman.

The Talented Mr. Ripley novel has already been adapted countless times, but it will become a TV series for the first time later this year.
A series adaptation was announced to be in the works at Showtime several years ago, but we learned a year ago that Netflix had taken over the project.
It’s a good move because Netflix’s global reach has proven crucial to the success of shows in the past.
Even acquired shows are getting a second chance at life. Suits staged quite the comeback on the platform years after its cancellation and is now getting an LA-set spinoff.
Thanks to us fast approaching the Ripley Season 1 premiere on Netflix, details are starting to spill out.
Check out everything we know about Ripley Season 1.
When does Ripley Season 1 premiere?

Andrew Scott stars in a new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley for Netflix – here’s the trailer to prove it.
Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley series has enjoyed a storied history on screens big and small, with adaptations including 1960 French film Purple Noon starring Alain Delain and Anthony Minghella’s big budget 1999 version of The Talented Mr Ripley starring Matt Damon.
Perhaps the most intriguing take on the material was when Wim Wenders cast Dennis Hopper as Ripley for his 1974 film The American Friend.
The latest adaptation, which was originally produced for Showtime but is now premiering on Netflix, is called, appropriately enough, Ripley, and it is filmed in black and white.
It appears to be a passion project for Schindler’s List scribe Steven Zaillian, who serves as writer, showrunner, director and executive producer.

The 65-year-old music legend recently admitted to being "fairly deaf" and ditching his hearing aid because the device worked better than he anticipated.

Since I’ve previously indulged in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting on numerous occasions, happily stumbling through my very first drug-fueled Irvine Welsh adaptation, Filth isn’t exactly a surprising endeavor by any means. Granted, it’s an absolutely bonkers character study injected with heaping mounds of Columbia’s finest and enough sexual expression to make Hugh Hefner blush, but this is signature Welsh material. Filth isn’t a Danny Boyle flick though, so questions surrounding relative newbie Jon S. Baird’s ability to capture the same “controlled” insanity immediately arise – which he confidently dismisses after a raucous introduction.
Filth is far more than a Scottish dark comedy about the most crooked cop in history, as Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy) slowly reveals an entire army of inner demons over the course of this sinisterly tragic downward spiral. Everything starts out cheekily enough when Robertson reveals his plan to sabotage every other...

In an interview with Digital Spy earlier today, the electropop singer - real name Coco Sumner - explained that she is finding it difficult whittling down the album to just 11 songs. "It's completely done. We spent all yesterday doing the tracklisting," she said. "The thing is, there are 15 tracks mixed and mastered, but Island Records only want 11 tracks on the record. "We'll have to sacrifice four and it's really doing my head in. I think I might just get one of my friends to do it because I'm my own worst critic." However, Coco also revealed that the leftover tracks will not necessarily be wasted, with several likely to become B-sides. "I really love B-sides because they're so personal for (more)...
