Steven Soderbergh is gearing up for a busy early 2025. Before his thriller Black Bag, starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, arrives in March, we’ll finally get the release of his formally inventive ghost tale Presence. Coming from Neon a year after its Sundance premiere, the supernatural thriller starring Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday, West Mulholland, and Julia Fox. Ahead of the January 24 release, the new trailer has arrived.
I said in my review, “For a prolific artist, a surge of creativity can often be synonymous with a dip in quality. Though not if you are Steven Soderbergh. He’s only continued to reinvent himself and forge ahead with new technology, subjects, and structural gambles. His latest film, Presence, is a haunting ghost tale wrapped in a nuanced family drama, and one of his most formally ambitious attempts yet. What if the camera, operated by Peter Andrews (aka Soderbergh), was the ghost?...

Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence” is nearly here.
After making a huge splash at Sundance at the beginning of the year (and getting quickly snapped by Neon for distribution), the offbeat horror film, told from the perspective of the ghost, is nearing its January 24 release. And you can watch the brand-new trailer below.
“Presence” stars Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan as parents that move into a new house; a new house that has a decidedly haunted history. (Julia Fox makes a brief cameo as their kooky real estate agent.) The story is told through vignettes as we drift through the house, just like a spirit. At Sundance, Soderbergh said he was manning the camera most of the time, quickly darting between one room and another.
The trailer does a great job of showing what the movie is like without giving anything away, because, of course, there’s a mystery in this haunted house story as well.

This post contains mild spoilers for "Blood Creek."
Vampire horror movies are a dime-a-dozen, often falling into the same genre trappings or retreading familiar storylines. This is not always a bad thing, though, as long as there's fun to be had: films like "Blade" or "Van Helsing" entertain us by expertly balancing thrilling action with dramatic tension while knowing it is best not to indulge in self-seriousness. Well, what about an odd little vampire tale that is both campy and self-serious, as well as equal parts ridiculous and entertaining? Welcome to Joel Schumacher's unforgettable "Blood Creek," where a Nazi vampire scholar named Richard Wirth (a young Michael Fassbender) wreaks havoc after being freed from captivity by two brothers who really should have known better. Henry Cavill and Dominic Purcell play Evan and Victor Marshall, respectively, and it is up to this duo to try and stop this near-immortal Nazi...

Prime Video has released the official trailer for ‘The Sticky,’ a fast-paced, dark comedy series from Blumhouse Television.
Inspired by a real-life heist that made global headlines in 2012, which saw more than $18 million worth of maple syrup stolen from Quebec’s national reserves.
The series follows Ruth Landry (three-time Emmy Award winner Margo Martindale), a tough, middle-aged maple syrup farmer who turns to crime when the bureaucratic authorities threaten to take away everything she loves. She teams up with the hot-tempered Bostonian mobster (Chris Diamantopoulos), and a mild-mannered French-Canadian security guard (Guillaume Cyr) to carry out a multi-million-dollar heist on Quebec’s maple syrup surplus.
In the trailer, the unlikely trio of maple syrup thieves are introduced – as they evade the long arm of the law, create mayhem in their quest for liquid gold, and potentially dabble in murder.

Let’s face it – Alien movies are not created equal. In my Alien: Romulus review, I noted that there have really only ever been two flawless films in the franchise, with the rest all having moments of genius (well – most of them) but none measuring up to the first two movies in the saga. All of this makes Alien movie rankings quite controversial, as it’s a divisive topic. So, how does our Alien movies ranked list shape up? Let’s dive right in, shall we?
Alien Vs Predator: Requiem (2007)
I honestly couldn’t believe Fox had the gall to release this as a legit entry into the franchise in 2007. At the time, the studio had a bad reputation for putting out half-baked and cheap genre fare (made even more frustrating by how many were based on top-notch properties). This was the nadir of both the Alien and Predator franchises.

Lauded journalist, host, and moderator Josh Horowitz is a staple among the Hollywood circuit in part thanks to his popular podcast “Happy Sad Confused.” Horowitz, who began his career as a producer and talent booker, parlayed his expertise and ease with filmmakers into his own standalone podcast back in 2014. Its format pivoted during the pandemic to include a video component on YouTube (where he has amassed more than 111K subscribers), and once again took another shape as Horowitz began hosting live podcast recordings with a partnership at the 92nd St Y in New York City.
Horowitz has interviewed notoriously private, or rather, anti-podcast stars such as Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, and Vin Diesel, with Christian Bale, Cillian Murphy, Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, and Henry Cavill appearing on multiple episodes. Some of Horowitz’s personal heroes like George Miller, Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Guillermo del Toro, Steven Soderbergh, Denis Villeneuve, and...

For four films in a row, the timeline of the Alien franchise was very straightforward, with each sequel picking up where the previous movie left off… but then things got a bit more complicated, with the addition of prequels, a mid-quel, and even a couple of crossovers that don’t appear to be canon to the other movies. So we have decided to try to clear up the confusion and put together a list on How to Watch the Alien Franchise in Chronological Order. Here we go…
Alien Vs. Predator (2004)
As mentioned, the Predator crossovers aren’t acknowledged in the Alien films that followed; in fact, the prequels try their best to contradict them. But if you’re looking to watch these movies in an order based on the timeline, this is where you start, because it’s set in 2004 (and the unrated cut has a prologue that takes place...

As 20th Century Studios confirms that an Alien: Romulus sequel is on the way, here are the threads and clues about what might happen in it.
Nb: The following contains spoilers for Alien: Romulus. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, why not read our spoiler-free review?
Director Fede Alvarez may previously have been coy about any plans to make a sequel to August’s sci-fi horror Alien: Romulus, but he and writer Rodo Sayagues at least left the story open enough for some sort of continuation.

After the unfortunate box office disappointment of the criminally underrated "Alien: Covenant," 20th Century Studios opted to veer off from director Ridley Scott's trilogy of movies following the adventures of the android xenomorph experimenter David (Michael Fassbender). The studio seemed to view the franchise as one badly in need of a rethink — especially since it's hard to make a cheap "Alien" movie.
At a reported budget of $80 million, Fede Álvarez's "Alien: Romulus" wasn't exactly affordable, but it was cheaper than "Prometheus" and "Covenant," and, most importantly, a straight-ahead horror flick with the kind of stalk-and-seed frights that made the first two movies — "Alien" and "Aliens" — box office smashes. Curiously, the studio's parent company, Disney, initially wanted to take Álvarez's acid-veined thrillride straight to Hulu. But they eventually realized they had an unabashedly mainstream "Alien" installment on their hands, and, $350 million worldwide later, they have a completely rejuvenated franchise.

Over the past 20 years, screenwriter Peter Straughan has become British cinema’s go-to guy for adaptations. That might sound like a back-handed compliment, but his protean talent makes it hard to pinpoint what exactly constitutes a typical project for the UK-based writer: is it Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), his masterly adaptation of John Le Carré’s classic Cold War spy thriller; is it Frank (2014), which stars Michael Fassbender as a struggling indie musician sporting a papier mâché head; or is it Our Brand Is Crisis, a satirical Sandra Bullock comedy based on a deadly serious political documentary?
Straughan is currently sailing into awards season with his take on Robert Harris’ 2016 bestseller Conclave, a darkly witty conspiracy drama starring Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini. Directed by Edward Berger, following hard on the heels of his award-winning drama All Quiet on the Western Front two years ago, it...

“Kneecap,” the wild Irish comedy biopic that took Sundance by storm earlier this year, is heading to Africa. The film, which is Ireland’s submission to the Oscars international film category and many have tipped for a nomination, has been acquired by international distributor What the Hero Wants (Wthw) in a multi-territory deal.
After impressive box office runs in the U.S., U.K. and Ireland and a global box office in excess of $4 million, “Kneecap” will now launch theatrically in early December 2024 across multiple African territories, including South Africa, Nigeria and Ghana, with more to be announced. This will be followed by a digital release.
From writer-director Rich Peppiatt, “Kneecap” — which was picked up in Sundance by Sony Pictures Classics — is a raucous semi-autobiographical comedy about the wildly outspoken and hard-partying Northern Irish hip-hop trio of the same name. Set in Belfast, the film follows the group as they...

Writer and director Andrea Arnold returns with coming of age drama Bird, and here’s the trailer for her new movie.
Over the course of the last two decades, writer and director Andrea Arnold has built up a terrific filmography.
She began her career with three short films, Milk, Dog and Wasp. Her 2006 feature directorial debut, the chilling psychological drama Red Road, about a CCTV operator in Glasgow who becomes obsessed with a man from her past, is a great example of how a low budget is no hinderance when you have a brilliant script. The film was the first in a planned trilogy called Advance Party, in which three directors use the same characters to tell different stories.
The next film, Donkeys, directed by Morag McKinnon, was released in 2010. Sadly, the third film, Copenhagen, which would have been directed by Mikkel Nørgaard, was stuck in development and never made.

Bilal Hasna is transforming into Layla, the title drag queen in Amrou Al-Kadhi’s feature directorial debut.
“3 Body Problem” star Hasna leads “Layla,” which centers on an eponymous British-Palestinian drag queen in London who falls in love with an advertising executive (Louis Greatorex), all while navigating their identity around family and friends. Think a modern-day, queer take on “Romeo & Juliet.”
The British indie film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and later opened the BFI Flare: London Lgbtiq+ Film Festival. “Layla” also screened at the London Film Festival and Newfest.
Director Al-Kadhi previously worked as a drag performer before becoming a filmmaker. British artist-turned-filmmaker Steve McQueen is tired of being defined by other people. Since he broke out with 2008’s Irish prison drama “Hunger” — along with Michael Fassbender — each film has been completely different from the last. “Shame” (2011) was a provocative portrait of a sex addict (Fassbender), while Best Picture winner “12 Years a Slave” (2013) turned Lupita Nyong’o into an Oscar-winning star and grossed $187.7 million worldwide. “Widows” (2018) was a less successful foray into an American genre picture. And back in Britain, his 2020 “Small Axe” limited TV series and 2023 documentary “Occupied City” earned raves.

Everyone was surprised when Henry Cavill, one of the internet's most beloved hunks, announced that he was leaving the cast of Netflix's The Witcher, where he played the lead role of Geralt of Rivia. But at least he's making a lateral move: instead of slicing up monsters on the Continent, he'll be slicing up fellow immortals in a remake/reboot/reimagining of Highlander, the 1986 film where immortals travel the world trying to kill each other, since apparently, "there can be only one."
Why can there be only one? Save some mystery for the movie. In any case, Redanian Intellgence — which usually covers Witcher news but will make an exception for a movie where Henry Cavill using a sword — reports that filming will begin in the first quarter of 2025. That goes against what Cavill previously said about shooting starting in July of 2024, but it's not uncommon for schedules to shift.

Alicia Vikander opened up about her family life at the Zurich Film Festival, where she received the Golden Eye Award.
“Sometimes, [preparing for a role] is boring and tedious. My three-year-old is wondering what’s going on, because I’m locking the doors and talking to myself,” she laughed.
“When I am done, I get very tired. Acting is physically and emotionally draining. I have two young children now, I was pregnant when making that film and that’s where most of my time goes when I am not working,” said the Swedish actor, fresh off dystopian sci-fi “The Assessment.”
Vikander’s growing multilingual family – the actor is married to Michael Fassbender – aroused festival audience’s curiosity.
“My six-month-old doesn’t speak much, but my three-year-old speaks Portuguese, English and Swedish. Recently, he was hanging out with some kids and now there’s also a bit of Spanish. He’s giving me language courses now!

How many times has a forgotten film found success on Netflix? Surely too many to count. The service has proven time and time again that, no matter how bad a movie is, if the public have been given long enough to forget it existed, it will more than likely see a resurgence in interest when fed into the streaming machine. Just take a look at the 2008 Keanu Reeves thriller "Street Kings," which had a renaissance on Netflix back in 2023. Or when Netflix breathed new life into the forgotten Aaron Eckhart-led action thriller "The Bricklayer" this year.
Now, it's Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg's turn. Wahlberg is no stranger to a streaming resurgence, with the actor's "Shooter" making waves on Netflix in 2023. This time, though he's joined by Denzel (who only just found his way into Netflix's top charts last month thanks to "American Gangster") in 2013's buddy cop actioner "2 Guns.
