This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.
Since 2020, Star Trek: Discovery has harbored a strange sci-fi temporal anomaly. Starting with the episode “Die Trying,” in season 3, director David Cronenberg—the mastermind who gave us The Fly and more recently, Crimes of the Future—has appeared semi-regularly as a mysterious figure known only as “Dr. Kovich.” As Discovery’s latter seasons have gone on, Kovich’s true purpose has become more clear, even if we don’t fully understand why he wears that all-black, somewhat contemporary-looking suit.
While it’s been tempting to say that David Cronenberg has just been playing David Cronenberg this entire time, the Discovery series finale actually fully answers the question of who Kovich really is and his larger role in Star Trek canon. In fact, Cronenberg’s strange character is revealed to be, perhaps, one of the most crucial people in the entire universe.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the series finale of "Star Trek: Discovery."
After nearly seven years on the air, "Star Trek: Discovery" has come to a satisfying end with this week's series finale, titled "Life, Itself" -- though not without answering a lingering question or two along the way. The galaxy-spanning trail of breadcrumbs has led to the final hiding spot of the Progenitors' lifegiving technology, with Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery successfully flinging the dangerously powerful MacGuffin safely out of reach into the center of a black hole, the threat of Moll (Eve Harlow) handing the weapon over to the Breen having been neautralized. Fans were even given a glimpse of Burnham's blissful life together with Booker (David Ajala) decades in the future, putting a nice and tidy bow on characters we've spent the better part of a decade getting to know and love.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and...

If you subscribe to JoBlo Horror Originals (which you should!), you’ve probably caught our series 80’s Horror Movie Memories. In this show, we highlight all of our favourite horror movies from arguably the greatest decade for horror, with tons of very special guests. The decade started with a bang, with Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the first instalment in the Friday the 13th series, John Carpenter’s The Fog, and more. Check out our feature-length examination of 1980 here, but this week, we’re looking at 1981.
While some may think the year pales compared to 1980, they might be underestimating what’s a pretty significant year for horror. Arguably, one would call it the year of the werewolf, with the year dominated by the best werewolf movies of all time, John Landis’s An American Werewolf in London and Joe Dante’s The Howling. While those might have been the biggest...

"Star Trek: Enterprise" was originally intended to be a lot more low-tech than it was. "Enterprise" is set roughly a century prior to the original "Star Trek," and show co-creator Brannon Braga initially conceived of a series that was a lot more earthbound. There were to be no transporters, no phasers, and -- perhaps most controversially -- no trekking. Braga wanted the bulk of the show's first season to take place entirely on Earth as the Enterprise is built and humanity prepares for its first extended mission into space. Paramount, however, didn't like Braga's ideas, feeling that the Enterprise needed to be launched in the pilot. Also transporters. Also phasers. Recognizable Trek iconography was required. Braga reached a compromise by including transporters, but stating that it was still a new technology unsafe for human use. And, yes, Enterprise officers carried phasers.
Paramount wasn't happy with just those cosmetic additions, however.

"This has gotta work, or we're all in trouble." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for a movie history documentary called Making Apes: The Artists Who Changed Film, from filmmaker William Conlin. The movie is a fascinating documentary about a group of ambitious makeup artists, telling the story behind the guys who changed everything with Planet of the Apes. 50 years ago, John Chambers and Tom Burman changed the future of cinema with their groundbreaking work on the make-up and costumes for the apes in the seminal sci-fi film. The doc film features appearances by Tom Burman, Guillermo del Toro, John Landis, Rick Baker, Leonard Maltin, and Matt Winston. I really love these docs that go deep into the historic behind-the-scenes moments of Hollywood, specifically the FX industry and how they pulled off major milestones like Apes. Can't wait to watch this. Any and all movie geeks need to watch out for this.

From his early credit as Frankenstein in Sabrina the Teenage Witch to his recent role as Gruagach in the new Hellboy movie, Douglas Tait has brought a myriad of monsters, creatures, and iconic characters to life on screen, often while performing with imaginative makeup effects, jaw-dropping prosthetics, and incredible costumes. To celebrate the release of the new Hellboy, we caught up with Tait in our latest Q&A feature to discuss playing the vengeful boar character, and he also reflects on meeting legendary practical effects guru Stan Winston on the set of Zathura and playing Jason Voorhees in the ending of Freddy vs. Jason.
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Douglas, and congratulations on the new Hellboy! What can you tell us about your character Gruagach in the new movie?

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Vertical Entertainment. Director/writer: Alec Gillis. Cast: Lance Henriksen, Camille Balsamo, Matt Winston, Giovonnie Samuels and Winston James Francis. Harbinger Down was created by an experienced special effects crew. The director, Alec Gillis, has been associated with many sci-fi and horror films. As well, Harbinger Down is Studio Adi's first attempt to bring an independent feature to screen, focusing on their practical special effects. Also, the film was funded through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign and over two hundred and fifty thousand dollars were raised. The results are slightly mixed. Many of the special effects look heavily influenced by a previous Studio Adi undertaking, The Thing (2011) and the film's story is also inspired by this earlier film. Lighting is minimalized to almost hide the monstrous creations. Meanwhile, the story struggles to find impact. Harbinger Down misses the mark on a couple of.

There’s nothing that makes a horror fan wetter than the words “practical effects” (yup, coming out guns blazing in this review). In a time of dull, lifeless Adr oversaturation, the art of blowing up a prosthetic heads full of gooey physical liquids has become a thing of the past. But Amalgamated Dynamics Inc., the team behind such creature films as Starship Troopers, Tremors and numerous Alien entries, are just a few of the modern-day heroes who believe monster movies should rely on extensive practical make-up/animatronics – and they want to do things their way. That’s why they took to Kickstarter with an entirely practical homage to The Thing called Harbinger Down, smashing past its $350K goal in the name of all that’s squishy, horrific, and disgusting.
Harbinger Down is the brainchild of veteran effects wizard Alec Gillis, who served as writer and director on this 80s-themed passion project.

Stan Winston Week: A Letter from Matt Winston & Details on the Stan Winston School of Character Arts
Even though we lost the legendary Stan Winston over six years ago now, his legacy and passion for the visual arts still lives on through the Stan Winston School of Character Arts, which provides educational resources and tools for aspiring make-up effects artists everywhere.
Stan’s son, Matt Winston, practically grew up in Stan Winston Studios and continues to preserve the vision his father had for the industry and for the incredible work that special effects artists do each and every day. As we wrap up Daily Dead’s first-ever Stan Winston Week celebration, I thought there couldn’t be a better person to discuss how Stan’s vision continues to live on through educating aspiring f/x technicians and artists than Matt, who graciously provided us with a wonderful letter for Daily Dead readers and those interested in the Stan Winston School of Character Arts:

With its icy mountain backdrop and emphasis on using practical effects, Harbinger Down no doubt conjures memories of John Carpenter’s The Thing. The film’s new trailer features a creature that would send familiar chills down the spines of R. J. Fire City: Interpreter of Signs is an upcoming demon fantasy thriller set against the noir backdrop of a shadowy atmospheric world, where demons live among humans who are blind to what they really are.
The story follows Atum Vine, a 700-year-old demon with an attitude. To the humans who live unwittingly alongside him in a derelict tenement building, Vine is just the drug dealer at the end of the hall. But to the demons also living on the floor, Vine is a procurer of human misery, which they need to survive.
After Vine’s flow of addicts shuts off unexpectedly and apparently for no reason, Vine consults Cornelia, an interpreter of signs. She is a fortune teller in the demon world and an enigma even Vine can’t quite figure out.
We got a chance to catch up with Danielle Chuchran, the young actress who plays Cornelia, during our recent set visit for the film.

The trailer for the directorial debut of Academy Award-winning special effects designer Tom Woodruff, Jr., a supernatural thriller called Fire City: The Interpreter of Signs, is finally here and the practical effects are nothing short of badass! Dig it!
The film centers around a fragile balance that exists between humankind and the demons who secretly live among them and the crisis for all when this balance is broken. Mary-Margaret Humes, Harry Shum Jr., Danielle Chuchran, Kristin Minter, Matt Winston, Eric Edwards, Tobias Jelinek, and Robert Peters star.
Shum plays an abusive alcoholic boyfriend who suddenly transforms into a caring and loving person, along with the rest of the humans in his seedy tenement building. Dependent on human misery for survival, the demons in the building begin to starve.
Writer-producers Brian Lubocki and Michael Hayes successfully funded a Kickstarter campaign for the film in August 2013 and will go into production this month.

The ‘romantic dramedy’ is a concept that continues to elude many Hollywood filmmakers and screenwriters, despite its seemingly self-explanatory nature. A ‘rom-drom,’ as it’s known to some overeager cinephiles, should feature aspects of romance, drama and comedy. That’s the basic explanation, and the one that writer-director Stuart Blumberg applies to Thanks for Sharing, a rom-drom that tackles the tricky subject of sex addiction.
Unfortunately for Blumberg, and for Thanks for Sharing, that basic explanation doesn’t cut it for a movie with a 113-minute runtime. To make an enjoyable, coherent, feature-length film that traverses romance, drama and comedy, what’s utterly essential is a story that blends all three together. It’s not enough to merely toss the genres up onto the screen. That’s what Thanks for Sharing is missing, and that’s why it doesn’t work. For all its lofty goals and fine actors, the film never builds the strong,...

As one member of a support group that makes up the ensemble here, Mark Ruffalo points out that sex addiction doesn't get you sympathy, it gets you judgement. Sadly, that is a problem that writer-turned-director Stuart Blumberg (who co-penned The Kids Are All Right) never really overcomes, frequently addressing the symptoms without looking at the cause.
If you're an overweight geek like Neil (Josh Gad) the root of this evil is simply that there are too many hot girls riding the New York subway and the temptation to rub up against them is powerful. Initially, Neil himself is pretty tough to bear as well, but Ruffalo does draw out a softer side to him as his sponsor Adam, along with fellow addict Dede (popstar Pink...

Are you a sex addict? Do you know a sex addict? Would you like to know more about the subject, but wish someone would make a movie about it, rather than publish another book? According to Stuart Blumberg's new film Thanks for Sharing, sex addicts need understanding and support, just as much as someone who is addicted to alcohol or narcotics. Even more so than the often-pictueresque Manhattan locations, sexual addiction forms the landscape against which a three-pronged story plays out, as three generations of men deal with the life-long consequences of their addiction. Blumberg, making his directorial debut, also shares a screenplay credit with Matt Winston. The world that he's created is, for the most part, a kind and lovely and well-heeled Manhattan, in...

Stuart Blumberg’s Thanks for Sharing brought its brilliantly funny and serious look at sex addiction to Tiff last year, and deservedly brought down the house with applause at the screening I was at – you can read our five-star review here.
The film is now finally about to land in cinemas on both sides of the Atlantic, and ahead of its debut in the States this weekend, Yahoo Movies has released a new clip in which Gwyneth Paltrow gets suspicious of a call Mark Ruffalo gets in the early hours of the morning.
From Academy Award®-nominated screenwriter and first-time director Stuart Blumberg (The Kids Are All Right), Thanks For Sharing is a sharply comic and deeply moving look at a new kind of modern family, as a group of friends in recovery learns to face life together with heart, humor and humility.

Sexual addiction earns a big-screen discussion that is equal parts serious and silly in "Thanks for Sharing," a sober-minded dramedy from the screenwriter of "The Kids are All Right."
The serious side spins out of the struggles of Adam (Mark Ruffalo), a 12-step devotee who walks the straight and narrow, prays and is never more than a phone call away from his stern, no-nonsense sponsor, Mike (Tim Robbins).
The silly stuff comes from the comic struggles of Neil (Josh Gad), an addict who pays lip service to 12-step dogma, but who cannot stop bumping into women on the subway or leering at every woman he sees on the streets of New York -- a veritable minefield of legs, short skirts and cleavage.
"Is it me, or is Manhattan just one big (bleeping) catwalk?"
Adam is five years sober, careful to avoid the Internet and even TV, doing all he can...

An addiction is a serious subject no matter how you look at it, be it drugs, alcohol, sex – you name it. Addictions are diseases that consume people’s lives and turn them into something they may not even want to be, as psychological impulses cloud their decision making process as if the devil on their shoulder was the only person guiding them. Sexual addiction comes with an added stigma though, as some people think it’s just a convenient excuse for sleazeballs to seem more respectable (the whole Tiger Woods scenario), which creates tricky lands to traverse as a film topic. Make it too funny, and you’re treating sexual addiction as the myth some people believe it to be.
Thanks For Sharing rightfully shows sexual addiction in a light that’s both revealing and a tad sympathetic though, choosing to address the issues of sexual addiction while diving into the soul of each addict,...

With a fantastic cast led by Mark Ruffalo and Josh Gad, Thanks for Sharing is hands down one of the best movies you’ll see this year.
The film debuted out in Toronto last year to great early reviews – you can read our five-star review here – and is finally about to land in cinemas in just a few weeks’ time. The first trailer landed online earlier in the summer, and was more recently followed by a UK trailer cut from the same cloth. And now a new Australian trailer has been released, arriving soon after the Australian poster, featuring a wealth of new footage.

Stuart Blumberg’s Thanks for Sharing is an absolute must-see movie of the year, originally set to be released in the UK in just a few weeks on 13th September.
Koch Media have now announced that the anticipation will have to be sustained for just a little bit longer, pushing its release date back to 4th October.
Whilst the extra wait is of course always going to be disappointing, the film is definitely worth the wait – you can read our five-star review from Tiff last year to see why.
On the plus side, its original UK release date would have seen it opening opposite Ron Howard’s anticipated Rush, as well as Insidious: Chapter 2, the baseball drama 42, and Lake Bell’s terrific In a World…, making for a very competitive weekend in cinemas.

Stuart Blumberg (The Kids Are All Right) makes his anticipated debut with Thanks for Sharing, and having seen the film out in Toronto last year, I cannot recommend it enough.
The film was easily one of my favourites from the festival, alongside The Place Beyond the Pines and Much Ado About Nothing, and its imminent release in theatres next month couldn’t be more anticipated. (If you need any more persuading, you can read our five-star review here.)
The first trailer finally launched a few weeks back. And now the UK cut has debuted online, featuring essentially the same footage, but edited in a different order, cut to different music, and using different title cards. And whilst it might not be quite new, it’s still refreshing to see.

Soon after Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here reached its funding goal on Kickstarter, and even before the project was officially funded, Anna Kendrick was one of the first cast members added alongside Braff’s leading character, set to star as a Cosplay enthusiast / love interest for Braff’s brother, played by Josh Gad.
Now Braff has taken to Kickstarter to tell his pledges that Kendrick’s schedule unfortunately conflicts with the film’s shooting dates, thus forcing her to exit the project.
But he has good news as well, announcing that Ashley Greene has come on board in her place.
Perhaps best known for her role as Alice Cullen in The Twilight Saga, Braff notes that he’s known Greene for a couple of years now, emphasising that she’s every bit as hilarious as she is talented and beautiful, which is naturally encouraging with her character being a Cosplayer.

Ashley Greene has replaced Anna Kendrick on Zach Braff's new movie Wish I Was Here.
The actress will take over from her fellow Twilight Saga star in the Kickstarter-funded project.
Braff announced the swap to the campaign's backers.

"Putting the shooting schedule together is like planning 25 weddings: each day has so many moving pieces and locations. I love Anna so much and can't wait to work with her one day."
Braff described Greene as "gorgeous", "charming" and "hilarious".

Marking the directorial debut of Oscar-nominated Stuart Blumberg (The Kids Are All Right), Thanks For Sharing is one of the funniest films of the year. It’s rare for a dramatic comedy to strike the balance so well between drama and comedy, and Blumberg walks the fine perfectly here, making one of the best debuts behind the camera in years.
Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins, and Josh Gad star as a trio of sex addicts undergoing the twelve steps in the same group, and each leads their own interweaving trio of storylines, with excellent support coming in the form of Gwyneth Paltrow, Patrick Fugit, Joely Richardson, and Pink.
Adam (Ruffalo) is a five-years-clean sex addict, managing to keep his desires under control by understanding the things that set him off and removing those distractions – no TV, no computer, and a firm recognition that sobriety is a struggle taken one day at a time.
