Fifty-three years ago today, the world was blessed with the birth of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, who became an eternal icon in Latin pop culture and music. Selena blazed a trail for the música Mexicana explosion that we're seeing today and the Latina pop stars who have followed in her footsteps. Her impact is often minimized in comparison to the circumstances of her tragic death. However, her music - and how she bridged the gap between her Mexican and American identities - continue to resonate with new generations of Latine fans.
Selena Quintanilla was born on April 16, 1971, and grew up in Corpus Christi, TX. She was an Aries, a sign often described as "passionate, brave, and headstrong." Indeed of conforming with the música Mexicana artists of the time, she paved the way for herself by proudly embracing her Chicana identity. With influences like Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Jody Watley, and Gloria Estefan,...

In 1991, when Debbie Gibson’s underrated third album, Anything Is Possible, stalled at #41 on the charts, the New York Times printed a full-page obituary for her relatively brief career titled “The Perils and Perishability of a Teen Idol.” In just a few short years, Gibson had gone from America’s sweetheart—anointed the youngest artist to write, produce, and perform a #1 hit—to being declared a pop casualty by the nation’s newspaper of record.
Only two years earlier, the Long Island teen had scored her biggest hit, “Lost in Your Eyes,” the lead single from her sophomore effort, Electric Youth. The album is arguably the weakest of Gibson’s four Atlantic releases, largely eschewing the sleek dance-pop and of-the-moment freestyle and hi-Nrg stylings of 1987’s Out of the Blue in favor of ostensibly more mature piano ballads and Motown-lite, which zapped her music of the exuberance that made her debut so charming.

Ozy has inked Jody Watley to a talent deal that includes a biopic on the Grammy-winning R&b singer-songwriter-producer.
Ozy and Watley have begun the search for writers to attach to the project.
“When I heard Jody’s story — one of overcoming the odds, of the power of positivity, of defying expectations — I knew it was one we had to share,” said Chris Rantamaki, executive director of Ozy Studios. “Fans will be surprised that Jody has overcome so many formidable challenges in her life that she has never revealed publicly. She is now ready to break her silence and we are honored she trusts us to tell her story.”

Writer-director Justin Simien remembers how he was far too young when he saw his first-ever horror movie, “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge.”
It was his aunt who shared her love for movies — not just of horror, but all genres — with a young Simien. He recalls picking up on the movie’s “gay subtext.” “The supposedly, subtextual one…I watched it at a very inappropriate age and had no idea conceptually what was even happening in the movie, but I loved Freddy Krueger,” he tells Variety’s new Awards Circuit Podcast.
Simien, who wrote and directed the “Dear White People” film and series, transitions to horror with Hulu’s “Bad Hair,” which is now streaming on the service. Set in 1989 at the height of the popularity of new jack swing music, the film follows Anna (Elle Lorraine), an assistant who aspires to star in her own show at a music TV station.

“The first filmization of the forbidden erotic cartoon by Osamu Tezuka”
One of Osamu Tezuka’s most adult and sexually-charged works, Barbara (1973-74) was originally serialized as a follow-up to Ayako (1972-73) in Big Comic from July 1973 to May 1974. It was recently published in English, French, Spanish, Italian and German, garnering enthusiastic fans around the world, including hundreds who made history by crowdfunding a recent English re-release of the manga in a limited edition format.
Barbara is an adult-orientated fantasy tale filled with love and the occult from Osamu Tezuka’s reimagining of “The Tales of Hoffmann (French: Les contes d’Hoffmann)”. Its story deals with the erotic and bizarre experiences of a famous novelist called Yosuke Mikura whose life is tossed upside down by a mysterious girl named “Barbara”.

Editors’ Pick: Deafheaven, Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
“Deafheaven fancy themselves as a modern-day Bad Brains, but instead of blending hardcore punk and reggae, they combine vicious black metal with expansive space rock,” writes Kory Grow. “Now they’ve returned to their original muse and are splitting the difference between the battering-ram riffage of Darkthrone and the sparkly, soaring melodies of Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky…. It sounds much more organic this time, too, as the styles blend in and out of each other like a lava lamp.”

The Grammys are on Sunday, so let’s investigate its most bizarre category: Best New Artist. Both Christopher Cross and Esparanza Spalding have one. That’s real. And that’s why we’re counting down the ten best winners and the five worst losers. Because maybe we’ll learn something! That’s what I’ll go with.
10. Rickie Lee Jones
Rickie Lee may not have had as gigantic a Billboard career following her Best New Artist win as some of the other stars here, but her debut album is such an assured, unpretentiously poetic, rich listening experience. “Chuck E.’s in Love” and “Young Blood” are whimsical and catchy while “Night Train” and “The Last Chance Texaco” are crackling, despairing portraits. She was also so rad, and that made her bohemian folksiness so much fresher than you’d expect.

She's so unusual, indeed -- Cyndi Lauper whipped her block into a swishy, she-bopping frenzy in "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," and while her punky chutzpah certainly warranted MTV award credibility, she deserved every award for out-snarling Elvis and offering killer pipes, to boot.

When I first saw "vogueing" -- that is, the manufactured version of it presented in Madonna's "Vogue" video -- all I wanted to do was define it. It's a dance, but it's about rigidity. It's gay, but it's a pantomime of commonplace fashion spreads. It's self-presentational, attitudinal, geometric, contorted, winkingly narcissistic, actually narcissistic, and stony-smirky-silly-serious fierce. It's a mirage, but it's undeniable. It's just the best. And when you see the real thing as presented in the unforgettable 1991 documentary Paris is Burning, you realize that the act of "striking a pose" is just a warped-ass, queeny way of being yourself in the face of your real-life hardship, minority status, and what the world's done to morph you and your flagrant gayness into something much less Op-u-lent.
I'm obviously preaching to the realness choir here, but there's a thundering righteousness to the subjects of Paris is Burning that is just timeless.

I don't need to hear most Queen songs ever again. It's like Journey. Boring straight people feel cool for liking Queen and Journey, and we have to tolerate their late-onset realization of Freddie Mercury's immortality or Steve Perry's splendor like humorless chaperones. I just choose to ignore both catalogs now. Ugh. But rules are rules: If I had to perform this week on Idol, I'd choose "Under Pressure" for my Queen song (and totally key up the "Pushing down on me!" melodrama) and Jody Watley's "Looking For A New Love" for the Whatever song. I just want an excuse to wear a killer hoop earrings and coo "Hasta la vista, baby" to prudes like Skylar Laine. You understand.
Onto the rankings! The kids took on both a Queen song and a random song, and a few of them were startlingly good. That includes one mini-balladeer with chutzpah galore.

No use burying the lead: American Idol booted nobody yesterday because Those Darn Judges used their save on Jessica Sanchez, last night’s lowest vote-getter. Sad, right? I wept. You’ll remember that Jessica clocked in at #1 on my rankings this week. Which means she was great. Or at least better than Periwinkle Princess Hollie Cavanagh, the obvious choice for elimination this week, or even Phillip and Elise, who turned in weak-ass performances. So what went wrong? Why did Jessica score lower than the lowlifes? I assume it's the ghost of last year's shocking oustee Pia Toscano rearing her ballad-loving head. I also assume it's a natural occurrence given that we haven't had a surprising elimination yet. It was bound to happen like this one week, right?
Well, since we have no losers to mourn this week, we're presented us with a fun opportunity: Let's rank the remaining seven contenders...

Dwayne Milan (aka Milan) is an accomplished actor, dancer, singer/songwriter, producer and drag performer who has worked alongside a bevy of legendary NYC artists including Lady Kier of Deee-Lite fame, Jody Watley, Ultra Nate and Amanda Lepore, to name a few. He has also charted on the Top Ten of Billboard Dance charts as a songwriter and performed on the Broadway stage in the hit musical Hairspray. All of these accomplishments might easily lead one to think Milan would be the one to beat for the title of America's Next Drag Superstar, but after three consecutive weeks in the bottom two, this funky diva found herself shantay-ing home.
Jg: What is most charismatic about Milan?
Milan: The most charismatic thing about me is my true compassion for others. I Genuinely love people and strive to not only be a good person but show others that I love them and that I genuinely care.

American Idol is my baby. My girl. My boyfriend with the toothy, messed-up grin. Idol is my everything -- and it's certainly better than The Voice, but if it makes you uncomfortable to admit that, we can pretend this sentence never happened. Bottom line: Idol is back with a weird group of strangers, and after their first week of competition, my contestant rankings have shifted like abacus beads tabulating Steven Tyler's age.
In zany news, Ryan Seacrest announced that the lowest male and female vote-getters this week will be offered up to the judges like virgins at a volcano, and it's up to Randy, J-Lo, and Steven to pick which of the losers will leave. Very So You Think You Can Dance! I approve. The gents sang Stevie Wonder classics while the ladies toasted Whitney Houston. Some ruled. Some sucked. Lifeeee.
13. Shannon Magrane, "I Have Nothing"
Oh, honey. You have less than nothing.

Wednesday night’s installment of American Idol — focusing on Day 1 of Season 11 Hollywood Week — ended with a horrifying cliffhanger: Lovely and poised 16-year-old Symone Black falling off the stage and hitting the auditoruim floor in a horrific heap. But fret not, Idoloonies, I’ve got the transcript — made up entirely in my brain — of what happened next:
Jennifer
My shoes! My shoes! I think that girl splattered a drop of blood or something on my $12,500 shoes!
Randy
Yeah, yeah, yeah! Hollywood Week, baby! Season 11 is On!
Nigel
Who got the shot? Camera guys, did any of you get the shot?...

The filmed works of David Fincher aren't limited to the cinema. In fact, Fincher has made more music videos and commercials than he has movies and today I've decided to highlight a selection of Fincher's music videos from those that will have you nodding your head saying, "Yup, that looks like something Fincher would have directed," and others that will have you saying, "What? Really? The guy that made Zodiac, Seven and Fight Club made that?" I did my best to find a few quotes for some of the videos, a few facts on others and I can also suggest you look for the likes of Djimon Hounsou in Madonna's "Express Yourself" and Paula Abdul's "Straight Up", Christopher Walken in Madonna's "Bad Girl" and you can also find supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford in the video for George Michael's "Freedom!

This just in from The X Factor: Sponsored by Verizon Wireless: Stevie Wonder is calling Chris Rene! Hollywood is calling Rachel Crow! And wait, Steve Jones’ internal motherboard is transmitting some vaguely worded text message about an “error in communication” regarding this week’s Pepsi viewers’ choice performances. This just in: At 23 years of age, Whitney Houston’s mawkish 1988 ballad “One Moment in Time” has apparently reclaimed its power as an un-ironic, soul-stirring anthem that can accompany small-screen images of joy, triumph, and the overcoming of obstacles. How else to explain the melismatic octave changes and lyrics about “racing with destiny” that accompanied The X Factor‘s announcement of the Top 8 contestants in the “geriatric” quarter of its search for America’s next great singing sensation?
All of this, of course, is just a long-winded way of saying that as the octet of octogenarians (okay, that burrito slinger...

The legendary Miss Jody Watley and Carmen Electra popped up as guest judges on a lively episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race on Monday that also served as a nice promo reel for the titular dragster’s music catalog. The queens played a round of “RuSical Chairs,” then headed to the studio to cut renditions of Ru’s “Superstar” from one of six predetermined styles: reggae, hip-hop, country, disco, punk, and pop. Below, a recap using the time-honored art of the screengrab.

The 53rd Grammy Awards are upon us, and they bring with them dozens of artists competing in 109 different categories. The performers on the show — which airs live on Sunday, February 13 — include Eminem, Cee Lo Green, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Drake, Arcade Fire, Justin Bieber, Miranda Lambert, Katy Perry, Muse, B.o.B, Usher, Bruno Mars, Jaden Smith and Janelle Monae. It promises to be one of the biggest nights in the history of music, and MTV News will be bringing you wall-to-wall coverage of the big event.

If Steven Tyler’s interview with the Kidd Kraddick radio show this morning was the equivalent of a first-round audition for the American Idol season 10 judges’ table, I’m not sure he’d have gotten a golden ticket to Hollywood. In fact, given the rambling, ineloquent answers he gave to questions about his rumored Idol gig, it wasn’t hard to envision him as one of those deluded hopefuls who wind up getting dragged from the audition room by security to the general amusement of Simon Cowell & Co.

First made popular by Janet Jackson and Jody Watley in the '80s, the big, bodacious, body wave is officially back! The great thing about this sexy style? Soft, rippling waves flatter all hair lengths from short, Rihanna-esque crops to long locks, a la Joy Bryant. And the look is super-easy to create at home: Simply separate hair into sections (small if you want tight waves, bigger if you want a looser texture), and then wrap around the barrel of a one inch curling iron, keeping the barrel closed. Check out our gallery of wavy-haired A-listers for inspiration.

Eighties pop/dance superstar Jody Watley seems more relevant now than ever! Not only do her late-'80s megahits like "Looking For a New Love," "Real Love" and "Don't You Want Me" still sound as danceable and funky today (please re-listen to "Still a Thrill." I'm no Grinch, but I've got to admit there are times when the sound of a traditional holiday carol makes me say "Ho, ho, No!" (The too-perky "thumpity-thump-thump" refrain of "Frosty the Snowman," for example, conjures up evil fantasies of giving the titular hero a one-way plane ticket to a tropical destination.) Thankfully, though, we live in a musically diverse time where there are festive ditties to fit almost any mood. One of my all-time favorite seasonal tracks is Jody Watley's "Christmas Time Is Here," a sexy, fireside take on the melancholy tune made famous in A Charlie Brown Christmas.

To say that I'm having mixed emotions about Paula Abdul's exit from American Idol would be like saying Girl Scout Cookies are mildly addictive. (Yes, this is a veiled reference to the box of Tagalongs that EW.com's Dtws maven Annie Barrett is hiding away in her desk drawer.) On one hand, in the season finale of Idolatry in May, I suggested Idol's production team make massive changes to its judging panel, getting rid of Paula, Kara "package artist" DioGuardi, and Randy Jackson in one clean and satisfying sweep, and replacing them with (perhaps) Elton John and Jody Watley. I mean, let's be honest: All sentiment about Paula aside -- and yeah, I do have a soft spot for the "Straight Up" singer -- it's not like she was known for providing particularly cogent or vital feedback to contestants, even when she raised her game considerably this past year.
