The Late Show is coming out of CBS’ rotation at least until next week as host Stephen Colbert recovers from a Covid-19 diagnosis.
The comedian and late night host shared the news that he would be out and unable to tape for the remainder of the week Wednesday on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
“Sorry to say, per doctor’s orders, I’m going to be out for the rest of the week,” he wrote. “Resting up so that I can deliver the hand crafted, artisanal talk show that we so enjoy serving you. In the meantime, a heady blend of Paxlovid and onions in my socks (thank you, Fallon) will be rebuilding my immune system.”

Late-night might be back, but there’s still a few challenges.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is pivoting to an at home-like show after the comedian contracted Covid.
The show will go on remotely with a monologue; Colbert is pretty used to that having previously hosted the show at his house during the pandemic, including his own bathtub.
Guests will include Jada Pinkett Smith, who has been creating headlines with the revelation that she and her husband Will Smith have been separated for years, before that Oscars moment, and comedian Ricky Velez.
Other guests this week include Rachel Maddow and a performance by Caroline Polachek (it’s been a big month for indie rock on the show after performances by boygenius and Japanese Breakfast), Talking Heads, Keegan-Michael Key and Elle Key and the return of his former bandleader Jon Batiste.

Bill Maher was off television for five months, thanks to the WGA strike. So naturally, he had a lot to catch up on in Friday’s edition of Real Time on HBO.
Maher kept the focus squarely on politics in his opening monologue and in his panel discussion, with particular emphasis on covering the immigration border crisis. The panel was composed of Matt Welch, editor-at-large of Reason Magazine, and Sarah Isgur, senior editor for the online magaine The Dispatch.
The migrants issue has mushroomed into “a national crisis,” Maher noted. Panelists Welch and Isgur talked about the fentanyl plague that’s part and parcel of the loose border enforcement. Welch indicated that the crackdown on opioids is part of the reason that fentanyl has risen in popularity, turning “into a hockey stick” of overdose charting. He later referred to it as “bathtub heroin.”

NEW YORK -- Producer-actor Josh Hartnett's dot-com drama August is being picked up by First Look Studios for a July release.
First Look is acquiring North American rights to the Sundance Film Festival premiere, which centers on a high-rolling Web startup founder (Hartnett) struggling to resuscitate his company and personal life on the eve of Sept. 11.
Austin Chick's New York-based feature also stars Naomie Harris, Adam Scott, Robin Tunney, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Rip Torn and David Bowie, who plays a corporate raider.
August is one of several star-driven projects to slowly emerge with distributors from January's disappointing Sundance market.
Charles Corwin, Hartnett, Elisa Pugliese, David Guy Levy and Clara Markowicz produced the film, a 57th & Irving presentation of an Original Media production made in association with Periscope Entertainment. Howard A. Rodman wrote the screenplay.
First Look has tentatively set a limited July 11 theatrical release. CAA is repping the filmmakers in the deal.

PARK CITY -- Since Rebel Without a Cause, high school kids have been trying to figure out who they are in movies and documentaries. In American Teen, Nanette Burstein chronicles the senior year of four 17-year-olds in Warsaw, Ind. Perhaps because the issues never really change for teenagers, the film seems both revealing and superficial. It's a slickly made and entertaining slice of life that could be a big hit among kids who never get tired of seeing themselves on screen. Paramount Vantage picked up the film at Sundance.
Burstein was searching for an economically mixed town with one high school in the Midwest that reflected American values. She found it in Warsaw Community High School and proceeded to film four students and their friends for the next 10 months.
For her subjects, Burstein chose a rich popular girl, a nerdy guy, an artistic outsider and a jock, following them into locker rooms, classrooms, parties and hang outs. Her patience pays off, and she manages to insinuate herself into their lives, sometimes too much so. To watch the free-spirited and good-natured Hannah, who dreams of going to California to make movies, sobbing after she's broken up with her boyfriend feels a little like an invasion of privacy.
One wonders if events are ever the same when the camera watches them. Intimate scenes, like when Gordy's father explains to him that either he excels on the basketball court and gets a college scholarship or else he's going into the Army, seem more staged than spontaneous. And in the interest of keeping the film breezy and tying the stories together, the editing style tends to smooth out the rough edges. So even when the kids are having serious meltdowns, it doesn't feel like it matters that much.
Soul searching here is reduced to a series of animated segments where we literally get to move inside the characters' eyes to supposedly see what makes them tick. It's a clever device, looks great and it's fun, but it isn't very revealing.
So what if Megan, the privileged rich kid, has more problems then you might imagine and a dark secret that explains her psychic wounds? Perhaps the least interesting character is Jake, the video game geek and marching band member who has an awful case of adolescent acne that is probably going to scar him for life, but it's not explored.
For all of its access and exposure, American Teen seems skin-deep. It's well shot, with good production values and lots of cool music. But it's fun and facile in much the same way reality TV is. You may have a good time, but you'll hate yourself in the morning.

Sundance Film Festival
PARK CITY -- August is another among this year's crop of features that demonstrates that having a cast with indie cred can sometimes do little to buoy a film's miscalculated execution.
The film's identifiable actors and the modest boxoffice performance of director Austin Chick's previous release, "XX/XY," might attract a buyer, but the film is unlikely to see salutary theatrical returns.
In mid-2001, Tom Sterling (Josh Hartnett) is riding the apogee of the dot-com bubble as CEO of New York-based Landshark, an Internet startup with a vaguely defined business model. While Tom hard-sells the company's services to dubious clients, his brother, Josh (Adam Scott), actually creates Landshark's broadband products.
Tom's life is full of the trappings of easy wealth -- a cash-green convertible Camaro, fancy restaurants, willing women and lavish spending. His obvious yearning for ex-girlfriend Sarrah (Naomie Harris) hints at his dissatisfaction with this extravagant lifestyle, but he's too focused on getting ahead to try to resuscitate their failed relationship.
When the cracks begin to show in Landshark's faulty business plan and the company's stock plummets, provoking a cash-flow crisis, Tom prefers to ignore the impending signs of catastrophic failure while his management team -- COO Melanie Hanson (Robin Tunney) and CFO Dylan Gottschalk (Andre Royo) -- scrambles to cover the mounting losses.
Despite the exigencies of his character's situation, Hartnett appears to be sleepwalking through the film, displaying a frustratingly narrow range of expression and emotion. Principal castmembers are broadly outlined and minimally motivated, and even a couple of intriguing supporting roles -- particularly Rip Torn as Tom's father and David Bowie as a supercilious corporate raider -- can't lift the performances out of the doldrums.
The actors are not well supported by Howard A. Rodman's self-satisfied script, which would rather tell than show, relying at several points on long, smug speeches that bring the narrative to a grinding halt. Chick appears confident that his cast plays convincingly enough without revealing much enthusiasm and neglects to lend a distinctive style on the technical side.
