Jon Hamm spent the better part of the early ’90s avoiding calls from creditors. “The caller ID would come up and if it was an 800 number, it would immediately go to voicemail,” he says, reflecting on his humble beginnings during The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Drama Actor Emmy Roundtable.
“At a certain point, I had owed my landlord here in L.A. about seven or eight months’ worth of back rent that I somehow talked her into being fine with,” he continues. “Like, ‘Yeah, I’ll get it to you eventually. Of course I’m good for it.’ ” Matt Bomer was in no better shape. In fact, he found himself so far into debt early on in his career that, he recalls, “the creditors found my mom.” Times have changed, of course, and so have the challenges.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

Exclusive: Studiocanal and The Picture Company have acquired the rights to the French film Rodeo. The companies plan to transplant the premise to the U.S. and tap into the underground world of street motocross racing.
Helmed by first-time filmmaker Lola Quivoron, the original won the Coup de Coeur Jury Award in the Un Certain Regard Section of Cannes in 2022. It was based on Quivoron’s experiences photographing the French city’s urban dirt bike community and the people she met inspired the film.
Watch a trailer below.
Set in the outskirts of Paris, Rodeo explores the underground passion for bike-life gatherings and racing. Into this heavily masculine world comes a young female rider, who ultimately joins a gang and climbs its ranks as she plans a dangerous heist to test the group’s ambition and skill. It’s been 10 years since David Oyelowo made his U.S. breakthrough portraying Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.” Playing the awe-inspiring civil rights leader was an opportunity for the British-Nigerian actor to live up to his surname, which translates to “a king deserves respect.”
Oyelowo has been reflecting on that time in his life a lot more lately, thanks in part to “Becoming King,” a documentary directed by his wife, Jessica Oyelowo, that captures the seven-year journey to bring “Selma” to the big screen.
“It was a big year,” he says of 2014. “There was no way you could know the sheer amount of things that would happen, because at the beginning of it, nothing was happening. ‘Selma’ felt dead. I was in the middle of shooting ‘A Most Violent Year,’ having a good time with that, but just feeling in a state of limbo and then—”

Near the end of the miniseries Lawmen: Bass Reeves, David Oyelowo’s titular character is told something all too familiar to many unsung real-life heroes: “No one’s gonna ever know, but you made history today.”
“You can just imagine how many people from marginalized communities that is the truth for,” he says. “People who very much had a real hand in building this country, and whether it’s their history not being taught … or that their contribution to history hasn’t been valued in the same way, which is why getting this show made was an obsession.”
That obsession took the form of Yoruba Saxon, a talent-led production company Oyelowo created with his wife Jessica in 2014, though his desire to produce actually came from his “accidental experience” of helping to put together Ava DuVernay’s Selma years before. “I didn’t realize those moves that go on to lead...

Exclusive: Mike Goodridge’s growing UK production company Good Chaos, which is in Cannes with Un Certain Regard title Santosh, has had a minority equity investment from Cameron Lamb’s Paris-based audio platform Alexander.
The investment will give Alexander an opportunity to develop its growing non-fiction IP library, across film and TV formats, while Good Chaos has been able to grow its headcount, operations and production reach.
The companies’ first joint film project is Wife, Witch, Poisoner, Whore, a period thriller based on the Alexander audiobook by Katherine Rundell, and narrated by Helena Bonham Carter.
The official synopsis reads: “Beautiful, rich, clever, and determined English noblewoman Frances Howard was a dazzling celebrity at the court of James I. But when the unhappy teenage bride rebelled against the patriarchy of her day, she was put on trial for witchcraft, infidelity and murder – very nearly at the expense of her life.”

Some birthday gifts just aren’t going to happen, even for British royalty. Prince Archie, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son who turned 5 on May 6, 2024, reportedly missed out on a “superb” birthday gift costing thousands of dollars from his grandfather, King Charles III. The reason, according to a royal author and commentator, is because the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were concerned it’d remind Archie too much of royal life.
King Charles wanted to give Archie an elaborate playhouse for his birthday
In the lead-up to Archie’s birthday, Tom Quinn, author of Gilded Youth, a book about growing up in the royal family, discussed potential birthday gifts. Particularly one from King Charles with a hefty price tag.
The king, Quinn told Express, “suggested that he give Archie a playhouse. Not a plastic child’s playhouse, but a superb hand-made shepherd’s hut, complete with bunks and bookshelves.

“Shōgun” might be creating some drama at the Emmys.
Multiple industry insiders tell Variety that FX, the heavyweight contender in the Primetime Emmy race for outstanding limited or anthology series, is considering a bold move: shifting its submission for “Shōgun” to the drama series categories this year.
This strategic repositioning hints at the likely return of the protagonist, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (played by Hiroyuki Sanada). Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, the historical epic, celebrated for its intricate storytelling and marvelous world-building achievements, will now vie for accolades against heavy hitters like Netflix’s concluding saga “The Crown,” Apple’s intense office drama “The Morning Show,” and Prime Video’s gripping action video game adaptation “Fallout.”
FX declined to comment.
“Shōgun” brings to life James Clavell’s 1975 novel set in 1600 Japan, a period dominated by daimyōs and samurais. The narrative centers on the fateful encounter between the cunning English navigator John Blackthorne,...

“It’s very, very prideful and it was very special for all of us making it,” reflects Damian Marcano on the experience of directing three episodes of “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” As a child growing up in Trinidad, he and his grandfather would watch “The Lone Ranger” together and, when approached about joining the Paramount+ series, he was “very shocked to find out that he was actually the inspiration for what I had watched portrayed by a white actor,” referring to the influence of the real-life Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) on American pop culture. Reeves was one of the first Black U.S. Deputy Marshals, and the director is glad for the opportunity not only to “retell these stories with the correct lens,” but also to show “a character of this skin color, an African man, formerly enslaved man” who “gets to do the ass-kicking.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

What is Lawmen: Bass Reeves about?
The Western-themed show follows the story of real-life Deputy U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves, the first African-American to hold the position in the Upper Midwest Territory. When California State University Northridge’s head of film production Nate Thomas came to visit one of his first students, Paul Hunter, on the set of the new David Oyelowo-starring Apple TV Plus series “Government Cheese,” the Northridge alum and show co-creator could be heard boasting about his time in the program.
After learning to tell stories at Csun, Hunter spun a renowned career directing music videos for Beyonce and U2, among others, into helming Bacardi spots with Michael B. Much of that has been through PrettyBird, a Hollywood commercial house he co-founded and uses in part to help foster and launch the careers of other underrepresented voices. “It all started at Northridge,” Thomas says. “We do filmmaking not just for the privileged. You just can't keep those damn dirty apes down. 10 years after Tim Burton's 2001 "Planet of the Apes" re-imagining failed to reignite audiences' passion for stories about intellectually-enhanced simians, the long-running sci-fi franchise made an unexpectedly strong comeback with "Rise of the Planet of the Apes." Director Rupert Wyatt's entry in the series is now generally considered the weakest of the modern "Apes" trilogy, which is more of a testament to what Matt Reeves was able to accomplish with his subsequent sequels than necessarily a knock against Wyatt's film. "Rise" itself makes for an effective cautionary tale about humanity's hubris, our lack of compassion toward other living beings, and our habit of being our own worst enemy, as seen through the eyes of its co-protagonist, Caesar (Andy Serkis in his touchstone motion-capture role).
Yes, it's easy to forget that Caesar wasn't originally the singular lead of his own story.

Award-winning Colombian director-producer Simon Brand and Miami-based media executive producer Daniel Eilemberg have joined forces with the founders of Emmy-winning Imaginer Films, Julio César and Laura Franco, to launch Clover Studios, a new production services company in Colombia.
The new enterprise is in response to Colombia’s phenomenal growth as a major production center, driven by its competitive production incentives and flourishing creative community.
Led by Netflix’s ambitious series adaptation of Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s literary masterpiece “100 Years of Solitude,” which has entailed a full-scale recreation of the mythical village of Macondo and 20,000 extras, a number of high-profile projects have been lured to the country.
Just last year, upcoming sequel “Paddington in Peru” was mostly shot in Colombia instead of the country in its title. Star and executive producer David Oyelowo and Lawmen: Bass Reeves creator, showrunner and executive producer Chad Feehan said Reeves’ family values were what made him stand out. Oyelowo plays Reeves, a U.S. Marshal after the abolition of slavery.
“The way in for a global audience should be not just appealing to the sensibility of people who love westerns but the family,” Oyelowo said at Contenders TV. “Essentially a Black family which is also something you never see in this time period. As we discussed this, we felt the universal element was going to be the work-life balance as something that everyone can relate to.”
Oyelowo said that Reeves was always trying to get back to his family after his arrests. Reeves’ family values also influenced one of the show’s most memorable antagonists, Esau Pierce (Barry Pepper). Feehan said Pierce represents the antithesis of Reeves.

With Dune: Part Two’s success, Rebecca Ferguson’s filmography—which features a lead in a highly regarded sci-fi series currently airing on Apple TV+—has garnered more recognition. Yes, we are discussing Graham Yost’s science fiction dystopian drama TV series Silo. The Swedish actress expertly donned the role of Juliette Nichols, who is entangled in a web of mystery spanning the past and present.
Having said that, she obviously had to put in a lot of work to deliver a strong and complex performance. If you were to find out that she had “studied trauma” in order to assume this role, how would you respond? Well, she actually did this.
Critics gave the series favorable reviews, praising Ferguson’s performance and the production design. However, the actress has not gotten the recognition that her stellar performance so richly merits.

Rodriguez confided that she enjoyed The Paperboy, although that didn’t seem to be the popular opinion at the time. The movie was a Matthew McConaughey-led picture directed by Lee Daniels, and featured several stars including John Cusack and David Oyelowo. Despite its star-power, the movie received mixed-reviews that leaned over to the negative. But Rodriguez didn’t care for the critics’ opinion.
“I say f*** them because they don’t get it,” Rodriguez once told Vulture. “He’s so good at keeping me entertained. When I don’t like the dialogue,...

The Oscars (March 10) are finally, finally almost here. Come March 11, we can finally start talking about movies that aren’t Academy Award-nominated! Actually, make that March 12, as March 11 will be a day of chips still falling as pundits and amateur Oscar sleuths sift the wreckage and remains of what went right or wrong, bemoaning or celebrating their placement in Oscar pools and online rankings. Oh, and there are of course the awards PR reps doing the same.
If you’re reading this website and haven’t seen a bevy of this year’s Oscar nominees, we’re here to help tell you where you can watch them right now from home. There are a few — like “Godzilla Minus One,” not streaming any place right now — you won’t be able to crash-watch tht in the leadup to Sunday’s 96th annual Oscars, airing on ABC at 4 p.m. Pt/7 p.

Wes Anderson is long overdue an Oscar. The iconic director has been nominated seven times and lost on all seven occasions. He earned his eighth nomination this year for Best Live Action Short Film for his Roald Dahl adaptation “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” (shared with Steven Rales).
However, Anderson could find himself trumped again as there is an impactful, emotional, heartfelt obstacle in his way: Misan Harriman‘s “The After.” Harriman, who rose to prominence as a photographer, has created one of the year’s most talked about short films with “The After.” The Netflix short follows David Oyelowo as a man who suffers an extraordinary loss and attempts to go through the ensuing healing process.
The movie has earned plenty of A-list supporters, with Angelina Jolie, Jeff Bridges, and Oprah all making it known how much they adored the tragic short film. Meghan Markle also conducted a...
