Timothée Chalamet recreates one of Bob Dylan’s most famous songs and visuals with a version of “Subterranean Homesick Blues” for the upcoming biopic, A Complete Unknown.
Chalamet’s new recording of the 1965 classic is the fullest offering yet of the actor’s take on Dylan’s singular singing voice. The previously released trailer for a Complete Unknown just included snippets of his renditions of songs like “Girl from the North Country” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”
The visual, meanwhile, appears to incorporate some scenes from the upcoming biopic, plus some behind-the-scenes footage.

One of the most emotionally complex songs Beck has written is “Lost Cause,” which is sadder than your average breakup song because it’s more about resignation than remorse. The lyrics echo the adage that the divorce happens long before the divorce. Beck was 32 years old when the song came out two years after he discovered his fiancée was cheating on him (with a member of a band called Whiskey Biscuit), and he practically sighs every lyric: “I’m tired of fighting, fighting for a lost cause.”

For the last 55 years or so, you’ve had a friend in Randy Newman, if you have a thing for songs that offer eviscerating, uncompromising, even devastating dissections of the human condition and the American experiment. Or, sure, kids’ tunes, or laugh-out-loud funny ones, or memorable film-score cues — yes, all of those things, too. But the case for Newman as popular music’s greatest social commentators is the one being pressed most of all by critic-turned-biographer Robert Hilburn in his new book, “A Few Words in Defense of Our Country: The Biography of Randy Newman.”
Since leaving his post as one of the nation’s most well-known rock critics, a job he held down at the Los Angeles Times from the late ’60s through 2005, Hilburn has written four books, including the ultimate biographies of Paul Simon and, before that, Johnny Cash. "It was important for me to sing and play on set because it was in the spirit of the movie to do it live." Searchlight Pictures has revealed a new behind-the-scenes featurette for the film A Complete Unknown, opening in theaters this December. We also featured the official trailer a few weeks ago as they begin their big marketing push for the release. The film is about the early days of maestro musician Bob Dylan's life. At the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, a young Bob Dylan shakes up his act on the folk music scene by going electric and siring rock as the voice of a generation - defining one of the most transformative moments in 20th century music. Timothée Chalamet stars as a young Bob Dylan in this film written and directed by James Mangold, coming off of his work on the Indiana Jones movie. It also stars Edward Norton as Pete Seeger,...

Timothée Chalamet looks and sounds eerily like the young Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.” In this new featurette from Searchlight, he talks about taking on this demanding role, which required him to play the guitar and harmonica while singing such classic tunes as “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Like a Rolling Stone.” As the Oscar nominee notes,”Bob wouldn’t let himself be boxed in, which for me as a young artist is the most inspiring.”
The film, which is out on Christmas Day, chronicles the rise to fame of Dylan. The Minnesota native was just 19 when he moved to New York’s Greenwich Village in 1961. He soon cracked the folk music scene and rocked his fans in 1965 with his electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival.
“A Complete Unknown” director James Mangold weighs in on the decision to record all the musical performances in real-time.

How do you even begin to prepare to play Bob Dylan? The folk musician who changed the entire scene is at the heart of James Mangold’s new film, A Complete Unknown – and for star Timothée Chalamet, the challenge was to find a way to make the real Dylan… well, known. First came a three-and-a-half year period of learning to play guitar, getting to grips with Dylan’s songs and unique vocal style. And from there, it was all about letting go and reaching for something real beyond just a surface impression.
“Bob has a very specific, soulful voice, but what most defines it is his negotiation with his own words and the way he tells the story,” Mangold tells Empire, digging into his and Chalamet’s approach to the icon. “That essence is what Timmy and I were after more than a specific mannerism or tic, per se.” The...

Filmmakers and distributors of awards-hopefuls have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification that it finds egregiously inaccurate.
Some of this year’s cases are inarguable — for instance, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, in which characters spontaneously burst into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s The Brutalist, in which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. There are, however, also plenty of close-calls, about which many have made assumptions, but, in most cases, not confirmed.
The Hollywood Reporter has been working the phones and can now report which way almost every contender is breaking. This intel is, of course, subject to change prior to Nov. 4, and to being overturned by the Globes thereafter — but it is current as of this writing.

Not far into Kenneth Lonergan’s fame-is-hell-but-what-isn’t fable Hold On To Me Darling, Adam Driver, playing a country music crossover megastar about to begin filming his latest blockbuster, pledges in an accent so thick it could dent Johnny Cash’s belt buckle that he’s going to turn his famous life around “just as soon as I get done with this goddamn space movie.”
The line, coming from Kylo Ren himself, gets a laugh, a slow build sort of thing that picks up steam as the audience makes the connection between the Driver on stage and the Driver of real life. The actor doesn’t wink, and in fact tosses off the line without much ado, but with a play as unwieldy as this one, best to accept a laugh where you can.

Tired out by the deluge of atypical music movies? James Mangold is no stranger to the musical biopic, having brought Johnny Cash’s story to the big screen with Walk the Line, which got Joaquin Phoenix an Academy Award nomination for that film. Now, Mangold takes on another musical icon with the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. Searchlight Pictures has now released a comprehensive look with the new trailer, as it shows more of Timothée Chalamet‘s performance and the events of Dylan’s life that will be explored.

If you didn’t get enough of Timothée Chalamet‘s voice in the “A Complete Unknown” teaser, fear not. The Oscar nominee croons multiple tunes in the new trailer for the Bob Dylan biopic.
The trailer, which dropped Tuesday, chronicles the rise of Dylan (Chalamet) as he moves to New York from Minnesota in the ’60s as a teen. Per the logline, the film culminates in the icon’s “groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.” You can hear Chalamet singing such Dylan tracks as “Girl From the North Country” and “Like a Rolling Stone.”
The film comes from James Mangold, who adapted the screenplay with Jay Cocks from Elijah Wald‘s 2015 book “Dylan Goes Electric!” The cast includes Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo (a fictionalized version of Dylan’s then-girlfriend Suze Rotolo), Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez,...

Timothee Chalamet’s Bob Dylan impression came into the light on Tuesday with the release of the new trailer for “A Complete Unknown,” a biopic that charts the musician’s rise and culminates in his polarizing electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.
Wearing a small prosthetic nose, Chalamet takes on all of Dylan’s affectations in this new look at the film, which comes from “Walk the Line” filmmaker James Mangold. Indeed, “A Complete Unknown” has shades of Mangold’s Johnny Cash film as it also looks to chronicle the relationship between Dylan and Joan Baez, played by Monica Barbaro.
But don’t fret, unlike “Walk the Line” wherein Joaquin Phoenix sang as Cash, it looks like Chalamet is merely lip-syncing to Dylan most of the time in the Searchlight Pictures release. Either that or his performance is that impressive – or just as likely these days,...

Timothée Chalamet showed off more of his singing chops in the new trailer for “A Complete Unknown,” James Mangold’s bio-drama about Bob Dylan.
The new footage shows Chalamet singing “Girl From the North Country” as he arrives in New York from Minnesota. He begins to cozy up to fellow folk singer Joan Baez (played by Monica Barbaro) as the two spark a romance.
“Your songs are like an oil painting at the dentist’s office,” he tells her, clutching a guitar while shirtless in bed. At the kitchen sink, Baez responds, “You’re kind of an asshole, Bob.”
The trailer also features footage of Dylan and Baez duetting at the 1963 Monterey Folk Festival. A love triangle brews as Elle Fanning arrives as Sylvie Russo, a fictionalized version of Dylan’s then-girlfriend Suze Rotolo, who appears on the album cover of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.”

Johnny Cash and Shel Silverstein were in the same circles, with Silverstein even writing one of Cash’s hit songs. Still, Cash used to frustrate Silverstein with the way he spoke about the anti-war movement. Cash spoke about being a “dove with claws.” Silverstein wished he framed the anti-war movement differently.
Johnny Cash irritated Shel Silverstein with one of his quotes
Cash coined the phrase “dove with claws” to refer to fierce pacifism in the face of endless war. According to Kris Kristofferson, this phrase used to irritate Silverstein.
“Yeah, that used to piss Shel Silverstein off,” he told Rolling Stone, adding, “That whole ‘dove with claws’ thing. He just thought, ‘What the hell is that?’”

Jimmy Carter, who turned 100 years old Oct. 1, has lived quite a life, on and off screen.
Aside from his presidency during 1977 to 1981, the former president had many iconic pop cultural moments both before he became leader of the United States as well as during and after.
Carter shared moments with cultural figures like Andy Warhol, the Allman Brothers, Johnny Cash, Lucille Ball, Walter Cronkite and more. His real speech was featured at the beginning of 1978’s Americathon before a fictional mob attacks the White House and hangs Carter and his cabinet because of the energy crisis. The Bruce Willis movie The Last Boy Scout is based on Willis’ character being the Secret Service agent who saved Carter from a fictional assassination attempt, and there is an out of focus actor playing Carter in a flash back.

Kris Kristofferson did his best to get Johnny Cash to listen to his songs when he was still a struggling artist. At the time, though, Cash was a major star and had grown accustomed to receiving tapes from young musicians. When Kristofferson realized Cash likely hadn’t listened to his tape, he stole a helicopter to make sure his music got to the country star.
